Thai keeps the lexical verb unchanged while aspectual and modal meanings appear in positions around it. จะ, กำลัง, เคย, and ยัง typically precede the predicate they frame; อยู่, success or ability ได้, and แล้ว often follow it. This positional contrast is useful, but it is not a license to stack every marker in one universal order.
The meaning of the lexical predicate, the scope intended, and compatibility among the markers determine which combinations are natural. Several forms also have ordinary lexical uses: อยู่ can mean “be located/remain,” ได้ can mean “receive/get,” and แล้ว can organize successive discourse. Parse the construction before assigning an English tense label.
A practical map, not a single template
| Position | Form | Typical contribution | Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| before predicate | จะ | prospective, intention, expectation | จะส่งเอกสาร |
| before predicate | กำลัง | activity in progress | กำลังอ่านรายงาน |
| before predicate | เคย | experience at least once / former experience | เคยทำงานที่นี่ |
| before predicate | ยัง | continuation “still” or, with negation, “not yet” | ยังรออยู่ / ยังไม่มา |
| after predicate | อยู่ | ongoing or continuing situation | อ่านรายงานอยู่ |
| after predicate | ได้ | ability, permission, possibility, or achieved success | เปิดไฟล์ได้ |
| after predicate/clause | แล้ว | current relevance, transition, or attained state | ส่งเอกสารแล้ว |
The central slot may itself contain a verb chain and its arguments. กำลังอ่านรายงานอยู่ has a preverbal and postverbal progressive frame around อ่านรายงาน, not around the verb alone.
ตอนนี้ผมกำลังอ่านสัญญาอยู่ครับ
ton ni phom kamlang an sanya yu khrap
I'm reading the contract right now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
พรุ่งนี้ฉันจะส่งฉบับแก้ไขให้ค่ะ
phrung ni chan cha song chabap kaekhai hai kha
Tomorrow I'll send you the revised version. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
เขาเคยทำงานกับทีมนี้มาก่อนครับ
khao khoei tham ngan kap thim ni ma kon khrap
He has worked with this team before. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
No form of อ่าน, ส่ง, or ทำงาน changes. English progressive, future, and present perfect are reasonable translations here, but those English categories do not define the Thai forms one to one.
Compatible combinations build layers of meaning
Some markers combine naturally when their meanings fit. กำลังจะ + V presents an event as about to begin; ยัง + V + อยู่ presents continuation; ยังไม่เคย + V denies experience up to the reference time.
รถกำลังจะออกแล้วครับ รีบขึ้นเลย
rot kamlang cha ok laeo khrap rip khuen loei
The vehicle is about to leave; get on quickly. (ordinary polite warning, male speaker)
ฝ่ายบัญชียังตรวจเอกสารอยู่ค่ะ
fai banchi yang truat ekkasan yu kha
Accounting is still checking the documents. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker)
ฉันยังไม่เคยใช้ระบบรุ่นใหม่นี้ค่ะ
chan yang mai khoei chai rabop run mai ni kha
I haven't used this new version of the system yet. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
In กำลังจะออก, กำลัง frames an imminent transition rather than an already ongoing departure. In ยังตรวจ...อยู่, the two outer expressions reinforce continuation. In ยังไม่เคยใช้, ไม่ negates experiential เคย, not the physical possibility of using the system.
There is no good reason to force all three patterns into one master row with empty slots. For example, เคย describes prior experience, while a present progressive frame selects an event underway at the reference moment; stacking them without a carefully constructed context normally produces semantic clutter.
อยู่: aspectual after a predicate, lexical in a location
Postpredicate อยู่ can sustain an ongoing activity or state. Lexical อยู่ independently predicates location or remaining. Surface position and the preceding material help distinguish them.
คุณมาลีกำลังคุยกับลูกค้าอยู่ค่ะ
khun mali kamlang khui kap luk kha yu kha
Khun Mali is talking with a customer. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; aspectual อยู่)
แฟ้มสีน้ำเงินอยู่ในตู้ข้างหน้าครับ
faem si namngoen yu nai tu khang na khrap
The blue folder is in the cabinet ahead. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; lexical locative อยู่)
The second อยู่ is the main predicate and selects a place complement. It is not an “-ing marker” attached to แฟ้ม. Conversely, the first follows the activity คุยกับลูกค้า.
เมื่อก่อนผมเคยอยู่เชียงใหม่สามปีครับ
muea kon phom khoei yu chiang mai sam pi khrap
I previously lived in Chiang Mai for three years. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
Here เคย is experiential and อยู่ is lexical “live/stay.” A sequence of familiar forms can therefore have a different internal analysis from กำลังคุยอยู่.
ได้: position changes the construction
Preverbal ได้ can present an event as realized, obtained, or made available in context. Postverbal ได้ commonly expresses ability, permission, possibility, or successful performance. Lexical ได้ means “get/receive.” These uses are historically and semantically related, but learners must not collapse them.
เมื่อวานผมได้คุยกับผู้จัดการโดยตรงครับ
muea wan phom dai khui kap phu chatkan doi trong khrap
Yesterday I got to speak with the manager directly. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; realized opportunity)
ฉันคุยกับลูกค้าต่างชาติได้ค่ะ
chan khui kap luk kha tang chat dai kha
I can speak with international customers. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; ability)
วันนี้เราได้เงินมัดจำคืนแล้วค่ะ
wan ni rao dai ngoen matcham khuen laeo kha
We got the deposit back today. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; lexical ได้ ‘receive’)
In the last target, เงินมัดจำ is the object of lexical ได้. In the second, the entire activity คุยกับลูกค้าต่างชาติ precedes postverbal ได้. The postverbal ได้ page develops its ability and success readings.
Negation and internal scope
Negation normally precedes the material it scopes over. This creates useful contrasts:
พรุ่งนี้ผมจะไม่เข้าประชุมครับ
phrung ni phom cha mai khao prachum khrap
I won't attend the meeting tomorrow. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; prospective nonattendance)
ไฟล์นี้ฉันยังเปิดไม่ได้ค่ะ
fai ni chan yang poet mai dai kha
I still can't open this file. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; failed ability/result)
เมื่อเช้าเขาไม่ได้เปิดไฟล์นี้ครับ
muea chao khao mai dai poet fai ni khrap
He did not open this file this morning. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; event denied)
เปิดไม่ได้ preserves the opening task but denies ability or success. ไม่ได้เปิด places the opening event under negation. This ordering contrast deserves its own treatment on verb-chain negation.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers use aspect and experience markers around one shared task:
รายงานฉบับล่าสุดเสร็จหรือยังคะ
raingan chabap lasut set rue yang kha
Is the latest report finished yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
กำลังตรวจรอบสุดท้ายอยู่ครับ
kamlang truat rop sutthai yu khrap
I'm doing the final check now. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; subject and report omitted)
เคยส่งรูปแบบนี้ให้ลูกค้าหรือยังคะ
khoei song rupbaep ni hai luk kha rue yang kha
Have you ever sent this format to a customer? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ยังไม่เคยครับ เดี๋ยวจะถามหัวหน้าก่อน
yang mai khoei khrap diao cha tham huana kon
Not yet. I'll ask the supervisor first. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
The short replies omit arguments that the conversation keeps active. Aspectual position does not cancel ordinary discourse omission.
Common Mistakes
1. Moving กำลัง after the verb
❌ ผมอ่านกำลังรายงานอยู่ครับ
Incorrect—preverbal กำลัง cannot split อ่าน from its object this way.
✅ ผมกำลังอ่านรายงานประจำเดือนอยู่ครับ
phom kamlang an raingan pracham duean yu khrap
I'm reading the monthly report. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
2. Stacking every familiar marker mechanically
❌ ฉันเคยกำลังจะส่งไฟล์อยู่แล้วค่ะ
Semantically incoherent for the intended simple statement ‘I was sending the file.’
✅ ตอนนั้นฉันกำลังส่งไฟล์อยู่ค่ะ
ton nan chan kamlang song fai yu kha
I was sending the file at that time. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
3. Using preverbal ได้ for intended ability
❌ ผมได้ขับรถครับ
Wrong for the intended meaning ‘I can drive’; preverbal ได้ presents an obtained or realized event.
✅ ผมขับรถเกียร์ธรรมดาได้ครับ
phom khap rot kia thammada dai khrap
I can drive a manual-transmission car. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
4. Treating แล้ว as a future-tense ending
❌ พรุ่งนี้ฉันส่งเอกสารแล้วค่ะ
Wrong for the intended neutral promise ‘I will send the documents tomorrow’; แล้ว presents completion/change, not future.
✅ พรุ่งนี้ฉันจะส่งเอกสารให้ค่ะ
phrung ni chan cha song ekkasan hai kha
I'll send you the documents tomorrow. (ordinary polite promise, female speaker)
5. Adding an activity before lexical locative อยู่
❌ หนังสืออ่านอยู่บนโต๊ะครับ
Incorrect for ‘the book is on the table’; อ่าน wrongly introduces a reading activity.
✅ หนังสือเล่มนั้นอยู่บนโต๊ะมุมห้องครับ
nangsue lem nan yu bon to mum hong khrap
That book is on the table in the corner of the room. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; อยู่ is locative)
Key Takeaways
- Preverbal and postverbal positions reveal scope, but Thai has no single rigid template containing every marker.
- กำลัง...อยู่, ยัง...อยู่, กำลังจะ..., and ยังไม่เคย... are meaningful combinations, not conjugated verb forms.
- อยู่ and ได้ can be lexical verbs or constructional markers; analyze their arguments and position.
- เปิดไม่ได้ and ไม่ได้เปิด differ because negation scopes over different material.
- Time adverbs, aspect, modality, and context do the work that English often assigns to inflection.
