Postverbal ได้ and Successful Attainment

When ได้ follows an event predicate, it says that the event is within reach: circumstances allow it, a rule permits it, the subject has the relevant ability, or an attempted result is attained. The successful reading is therefore not a separate conjugation. It emerges when the surrounding story supplies an obstacle, an attempt, and a result.

English often forces a choice among can, may, and managed to. Thai keeps ได้ unchanged and lets position, event type, time expressions, and discourse decide. This page concentrates on successful attainment; Ability and Opportunity with ได้ develops the broader modal system.

The core frame: event predicate + ได้

Postverbal ได้ normally follows the whole predicate, including its object or complement.

ห้องนี้ประชุมออนไลน์ได้ครับ

hong ni prachum onlai dai khrap

You can hold an online meeting in this room. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; situational possibility)

ลูกค้าเปลี่ยนวันเดินทางได้ค่ะ

luk kha plian wan doen thang dai kha

Customers may change their travel date. (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker; permission)

ในที่สุดช่างก็ซ่อมเครื่องพิมพ์ได้ครับ

nai thi sut chang ko som khrueang phim dai khrap

In the end, the technician managed to repair the printer. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; successful attainment)

The object stays before ได้: ซ่อมเครื่องพิมพ์ได้, not an English-like order with “can” before the verb. A long complement can also precede it: อธิบายให้ลูกค้าเข้าใจได้ “manage to explain it so the customer understands.”

💡
Do not translate ได้ until you have located it. ได้ + event presents a realized occasion; event + ได้ evaluates whether that event is possible or attainable.

How a possibility becomes a success

An unanchored ทำได้ most readily means “can do it.” A completed success reading becomes strong when the clause includes an explicit past occasion, a failed attempt, a deadline, ในที่สุด “in the end,” or focus ก็ marking the awaited outcome.

ตอนซ้อมเมื่อเช้าเธอยังร้องท่อนนี้ไม่ได้ แต่รอบสุดท้ายร้องได้ค่ะ

ton som muea chao thoe yang rong thon ni mai dai tae rop sutthai rong dai kha

At rehearsal this morning she still couldn't sing this passage, but on the final attempt she managed it. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

เราส่งรายงานทันกำหนดได้ครับ

rao song raingan than kamnot dai khrap

We managed to submit the report by the deadline. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; the deadline supplies the challenge)

ถ้ามีสัญญาณ ผมส่งรูปจากหน้างานได้ครับ

tha mi sanyan phom song rup chak na ngan dai khrap

If there is a signal, I can send photos from the site. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; conditional possibility, not completed success)

The last example contains the same postverbal form, but no attempt has occurred. The ถ้า clause makes the event conditional, so can is right and managed to is wrong. This is why ได้ cannot be labeled a perfective or past-tense ending on its own.

Event type matters

Success is easiest to infer with a bounded goal: repair the machine, unlock the door, find a seat, solve the problem, arrive before a deadline. Activities without a natural endpoint tend toward general capacity unless context supplies a target.

PredicateWithout a challengeWith a target or boundary
วิ่งได้can runวิ่งครบห้ากิโลเมตรได้ “managed to run five kilometres”
อ่านได้can read / is legibleอ่านรายงานจบได้ “managed to finish the report”
ยกได้can lift itยกกล่องขึ้นรถได้ “managed to lift the box onto the vehicle”
เข้าใจได้is understandable / can understandในที่สุดก็เข้าใจเหตุผลได้ “finally managed to understand the reason”

หลังพักไปสองเดือน เขาวิ่งครบห้ากิโลเมตรได้แล้วครับ

lang phak pai song duean khao wing khrop ha kilomet dai laeo khrap

After a two-month break, he can now complete five kilometres again. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; restored capacity and attained benchmark)

ตัวหนังสือเล็กมาก แต่ถ้าขยายหน้าจอก็อ่านได้ค่ะ

tua nangsue lek mak tae tha khayai nacho ko an dai kha

The text is very small, but it is readable if you enlarge the screen. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; possibility, not an accomplished reading event)

Some combinations are partly lexicalized. จำได้ commonly means “remember/recognize,” and ฟังออก means “can make out by hearing.” Analyze the actual predicate before assuming that every final ได้ reports a hard-won achievement.

ได้, แล้ว, ยัง, and อยู่

The particles contribute different viewpoints and may combine.

  • ทำได้แล้ว says that ability or attainment is established now: “can do it now / has finally managed it.”
  • ยังทำไม่ได้ says the threshold remains unreached: “still cannot / has not managed it yet.”
  • ยังทำได้อยู่ says an existing ability remains available (informal); final อยู่ presents continuation.
  • กำลังจะทำได้ presents success as imminent. Plain กำลังทำได้ is normally awkward when ได้ refers to a single attained threshold, because a threshold itself has no internal duration.

หลังอัปเดตโปรแกรม ตอนนี้เราเข้าใช้ระบบได้แล้วค่ะ

lang apdet prokraem ton ni rao khao chai rabop dai laeo kha

After the software update, we can access the system now. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; newly established possibility)

ทีมกู้ข้อมูลยังเปิดไฟล์นี้ไม่ได้ครับ

thim ku khomun yang poet fai ni mai dai khrap

The data-recovery team still can't open this file. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; threshold not yet reached)

คุณตายังเดินขึ้นบันไดเองได้อยู่ค่ะ

khun ta yang doen khuen bandai eng dai yu kha

Grandpa can still climb the stairs by himself. (informal family report, female speaker; retained capacity)

In a past story, ได้แล้ว can be relative to that past point: พอช่างมาถึง เราก็เปิดประตูได้แล้ว means the door became openable once the technician arrived. แล้ว does not force present time.

Three neighboring constructions

Compare the placement closely:

เมื่อวานฉันได้คุยกับผู้จัดการค่ะ

muea wan chan dai khui kap phuchatkan kha

Yesterday I got to speak with the manager. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; preverbal ได้ presents a realized occasion)

เมื่อวานฉันคุยกับผู้จัดการได้ค่ะ

muea wan chan khui kap phuchatkan dai kha

Yesterday I managed to speak with the manager. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; postverbal ได้ presents attainability)

เมื่อวานฉันคุยกับผู้จัดการแล้วค่ะ

muea wan chan khui kap phuchatkan laeo kha

I spoke with the manager yesterday. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; แล้ว presents the event as attained/relevant)

The first highlights receiving an occasion, the second overcoming a constraint, and the third simply updates the conversation with a completed event. Real contexts can blur these English translations, but Thai order still contributes a genuine contrast.

💡
A success reading needs more than past time. Look for an attainable endpoint and contextual pressure—an attempt, obstacle, deadline, or contrast. Without that support, postverbal ได้ usually expresses ability, permission, or possibility.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

แก้ไฟล์ที่เปิดไม่ได้เมื่อเช้าได้หรือยังคะ

kae fai thi poet mai dai muea chao dai rue yang kha

Have you managed to fix the file that wouldn't open this morning? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

ได้แล้วครับ ผมกู้ข้อมูลกลับมาได้ทั้งหมด

dai laeo khrap phom ku khomun klap ma dai thangmot

Yes. I managed to recover all the data. (ordinary polite workplace reply, male speaker)

งั้นส่งให้ฝ่ายบัญชีวันนี้ได้ไหมคะ

ngan song hai fai banchi wan ni dai mai kha

Then can you send it to Accounting today? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

ส่งได้ครับ เดี๋ยวผมตรวจอีกรอบก่อน

song dai khrap diao phom truat ik rop kon

Yes, I can. I'll check it once more first. (ordinary polite workplace reply, male speaker; prospective ability)

Common Mistakes

1. Moving modal ได้ before the event

❌ ลูกค้าได้เปลี่ยนวันเดินทางค่ะ

Wrong for the intended general permission—preverbal ได้ favors a realized-event reading.

✅ ลูกค้าเปลี่ยนวันเดินทางได้ตามเงื่อนไขนี้ค่ะ

luk kha plian wan doen thang dai tam ngueankhai ni kha

Customers may change their travel date under this condition. (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker)

2. Using postverbal ได้ for a neutral completed report

❌ เมื่อวานฉันส่งรายงานได้ค่ะ

Wrong for the intended neutral ‘I sent the report’; postverbal ได้ adds ability or successful attainment.

✅ เมื่อวานฉันส่งรายงานแล้วค่ะ

muea wan chan song raingan laeo kha

I sent the report yesterday. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker)

3. Reversing event denial and failed possibility

❌ เมื่อวานผมไม่ได้เปิดตู้เซฟครับ

Wrong for intended failure after trying—this says the opening event did not occur, without presenting inability.

✅ เมื่อวานผมเปิดตู้เซฟไม่ได้ครับ

muea wan phom poet tu sef mai dai khrap

Yesterday I couldn't manage to open the safe. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

4. Placing ได้ before the object

❌ ในที่สุดเขาก็ซ่อมได้เครื่องพิมพ์ค่ะ

Incorrect neutral order—postverbal ได้ follows the complete predicate ซ่อมเครื่องพิมพ์.

✅ ในที่สุดเขาก็ซ่อมเครื่องพิมพ์ได้ค่ะ

nai thi sut khao ko som khrueang phim dai kha

In the end, he managed to repair the printer. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

5. Using กำลัง for an instantaneous success threshold

❌ ตอนนี้ทีมกำลังกู้ข้อมูลได้ครับ

Awkward for ‘the team is about to succeed’; กำลัง presents an internal phase, while attainment with ได้ is a threshold.

✅ ตอนนี้ทีมใกล้จะกู้ข้อมูลได้แล้วครับ

ton ni thim klai cha ku khomun dai laeo khrap

The team is now close to recovering the data successfully. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Postverbal ได้ follows the whole event predicate and presents it as possible or attainable.
  • A success interpretation comes from a bounded goal plus an attempt, obstacle, deadline, or result context—not from past tense morphology.
  • ได้ + event, event + ได้, and event + แล้ว organize realized opportunity, attainability, and completion differently.
  • ยัง...ไม่ได้, ...ได้แล้ว, and ...ได้อยู่ locate the ability or success threshold relative to a reference point.
