Few Thai words punish one-word translation as quickly as ได้. As a lexical predicate before a noun, it means “get, obtain, receive.” Before another predicate, it can present an event as attained or realized—often, but not exclusively, in past context. After a verb phrase, it presents that event as possible, permitted, or successfully achievable. Position and context, not a change in the form ได้, distinguish these functions.
This family is historically and conceptually connected: obtaining a thing extends naturally to obtaining the chance or result of an event. That connection explains the polysemy, but it does not remove the need to learn the different frames.
Three positions, three starting interpretations
| Frame | Starting interpretation | Example meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ได้ + noun phrase | obtain or receive a thing | ได้เงินคืน “get a refund” |
| ได้ + verb phrase | attain the occasion or realization of an event | ได้คุย “get to talk / did talk” |
| verb phrase + ได้ | event is possible, permitted, or successfully done | คุยได้ “can talk” |
| ได้รับ + noun/result | receive, often in formal or institutional language | ได้รับอนุญาต “receive permission” |
วันนี้ผมได้เงินคืนแล้วครับ
wan ni phom dai ngoen khuen laeo khrap
I got my refund today. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; lexical acquisition)
เมื่อวานเราได้คุยกับหมอครับ
muea wan rao dai khui kap mo khrap
Yesterday we got to speak with the doctor. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; attained occasion)
ตอนนี้ผมคุยได้ครับ
ton ni phom khui dai khrap
I can talk now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; present possibility)
The unchanged string ได้ is not carrying one fixed English tense. In the first example it heads the predicate “get”; in the second it precedes the event; in the third it follows the event and scopes over its possibility.
Lexical ได้: obtaining something
Lexical ได้ takes the obtained entity as its object. The thing need not be handed over physically: people ได้งาน “get a job,” ได้คำตอบ “get an answer,” and ได้เงินคืน “get money back.” Time and completion expressions remain separate.
นิดได้งานใหม่ใกล้บ้านค่ะ
nit dai ngan mai klai ban kha
Nit got a new job near home. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
ผมได้คำตอบจากบริษัทแล้วครับ
phom dai khamtop chak borisat laeo khrap
I've received an answer from the company. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
เด็ก ๆ ได้รางวัลคนละชิ้นค่ะ
dek dek dai rangwan khon la chin kha
The children each received one prize. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
ได้รับ is a common expanded receive predicate, especially with documents, permission, news, services, awards, and institutional processes. It is (neutral to formal), not a passive ending that must be attached to every act of receiving.
บริษัทได้รับเอกสารครบแล้วค่ะ
borisat dai rap ekkasan khrop laeo kha
The company has received all the documents. (formal-polite workplace statement, female speaker)
ผู้สมัครได้รับอนุญาตให้แก้ไขข้อมูลครับ
phusamak dai rap anuyat hai kaekhai khomun khrap
The applicant received permission to correct the information. (formal-polite administrative statement, male speaker)
Preverbal ได้: attaining an event
In ได้ + verb phrase, the subject obtains the occasion or realization of the following event. Past situations are common because a realized opportunity is often reported afterward, but past time is not built into ได้. A future expression can place the same construction in the future.
สัปดาห์หน้าคุณจะได้พบผู้จัดการค่ะ
sapda na khun cha dai phop phuchatkan kha
Next week you'll get to meet the manager. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
ทริปนี้เราได้ลองอาหารหลายอย่างครับ
thip ni rao dai long ahan lai yang khrap
On this trip we got to try many kinds of food. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
สุดท้ายฉันก็ได้คุยกับเจ้าของร้านค่ะ
sutthai chan ko dai khui kap chaokhong ran kha
In the end, I did get to speak with the shop owner. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; attained result is focused)
A bare verb plus a past-time expression is already a complete past report: เมื่อวานผมคุยกับหมอ. Adding ได้ may foreground actual occurrence, opportunity, or attainment. Formal writing also uses preverbal ได้ in reports of completed actions, but it is still wrong to teach it as an obligatory Thai equivalent of English -ed.
Postverbal ได้: possible, permitted, or successful
After the event, ได้ presents that event as available. Situation and verb meaning determine whether English prefers can, may, or manage to.
ห้องนี้รองรับผู้เข้าประชุมได้สิบคนครับ
hong ni rong rap phu khao prachum dai sip khon khrap
This room can accommodate ten meeting participants. (ordinary polite workplace statement, male speaker)
วันนี้เข้าชมได้ฟรีค่ะ
wan ni khao chom dai fri kha
Admission is free today. (public/service announcement, female voice; entering is permitted)
ในที่สุดเขาก็ซ่อมเครื่องได้ครับ
nai thi sut khao ko som khrueang dai khrap
In the end, he managed to repair the machine. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; successful result)
The same structural slot supports several related readings; no one-marker-to-one-English-word equation will work. The ability page contrasts this postverbal construction with learned เป็น, formal สามารถ, and coping-capacity ไหว.
The decisive negative contrast
Negation makes the position difference especially visible:
เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้กินข้าวครับ
muea chao phom mai dai kin khao khrap
I didn't eat this morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; occurrence denied)
อาหารจานนี้เผ็ดมาก ฉันกินไม่ได้ค่ะ
ahan chan ni phet mak chan kin mai dai kha
This dish is very spicy; I can't eat it. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; ability denied)
ไม่ได้กิน places ไม่ได้ before the event and normally denies its occurrence or rejects an assumption. กินไม่ได้ places ไม่ได้ after the event and denies possibility, permission, or successful performance. English couldn't eat can describe either, so Thai order must follow the intended scope.
เขาไม่ได้เปิดไฟล์ค่ะ
khao mai dai poet fai kha
He didn't open the file. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; event did not occur)
ไฟล์เสีย เขาเปิดไม่ได้ครับ
fai sia khao poet mai dai khrap
The file is corrupted; he can't open it. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; event is impossible)
Omission and short responses
Thai can omit a recoverable obtained object or event. After ได้ใบเสร็จหรือยัง, ได้แล้วค่ะ means “Yes, I have it now.” After ลองเปิดอีกครั้ง, เปิดได้แล้วครับ means “I can open it now / it finally opens.” The listener recovers the missing material from the immediately active topic.
ได้แล้วค่ะ ขอบคุณมาก
dai laeo kha khopkhun mak
I've got it now, thank you very much. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; item omitted from context)
ทำได้แล้วครับ แต่ยังช้าอยู่
tham dai laeo khrap tae yang cha yu
I can do it now, but I'm still slow. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; task omitted from context)
Omission is not random deletion. Without an active object or task, the same short strings leave the listener asking “got what?” or “can do what?”
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ได้รับพัสดุแล้วหรือยังคะ
dai rap phatsadu laeo rue yang kha
Have you received the parcel yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; addressee omitted)
ได้แล้วครับ แต่ผมยังไม่ได้เปิดกล่อง
dai laeo khrap tae phom yang mai dai poet klong
Yes, but I haven't opened the box yet. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้าสินค้าเสีย เปลี่ยนได้ภายในเจ็ดวันค่ะ
tha sinkha sia plian dai phainai chet wan kha
If the product is defective, it can be exchanged within seven days. (polite service information, female speaker)
รับทราบครับ ผมจะเก็บใบเสร็จไว้
rap sap khrap phom cha kep bai set wai
Understood. I'll keep the receipt. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding preverbal ได้ to every past event
❌ เมื่อวานผมได้กินข้าวตอนเที่ยงครับ
Nonneutral for the intended plain schedule report; ได้ adds an attained-event viewpoint rather than merely supplying past tense.
✅ เมื่อวานผมกินข้าวตอนเที่ยงครับ
muea wan phom kin khao ton thiang khrap
Yesterday I ate at noon. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; เมื่อวาน supplies past time)
2. Reversing occurrence denial and inability
❌ รถเสีย วันนี้ผมไม่ได้ไปทำงานครับ
Wrong for the intended explicit meaning 'I cannot get to work today'; this order primarily reports nonoccurrence.
✅ รถเสีย วันนี้ผมไปทำงานไม่ได้ครับ
rot sia wan ni phom pai tham ngan mai dai khrap
My car is broken, so I can't get to work today. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Putting the source before the obtained thing
❌ ฉันได้จากเพื่อนของขวัญค่ะ
Incorrect neutral order—the obtained object follows ได้, and the source phrase follows it.
✅ ฉันได้ของขวัญจากเพื่อนค่ะ
chan dai khongkhwan chak phuean kha
I received a gift from a friend. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Using preverbal ได้ for a permission question
❌ ผมได้เข้าไหมครับ
Wrong for the intended request 'May I enter?'; preverbal ได้ asks about attained occurrence in a suitable context.
✅ ผมเข้าได้ไหมครับ
phom khao dai mai khrap
May I come in? (ordinary polite permission question, male speaker)
5. Following ได้รับ directly with an event
❌ ฉันได้รับไปประชุมค่ะ
Incorrect—ได้รับ selects something received, not a bare event meaning 'got to attend.'
✅ ฉันได้รับเชิญให้ไปประชุมค่ะ
chan dai rap choen hai pai prachum kha
I was invited to attend the meeting. (formal-polite statement, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- ได้ + noun means obtain or receive; ได้รับ + noun/result is common in formal and institutional receiving.
- ได้ + event presents the occasion or realization as attained. It often occurs in past reports but is not a past-tense conjugation.
- event + ได้ presents possibility, permission, or successful achievement according to context.
- ไม่ได้ทำ normally denies occurrence; ทำไม่ได้ denies possibility or success. Position reveals scope.
