ไม่ได้: Did Not, Cannot, and Not Allowed

ไม่ได้ has several frequent English translations, but its position reveals the central contrast. Before an event phrase, ไม่ได้ + event denies that the event occurs or occurred. After the complete event phrase, event + ไม่ได้ says the event is unavailable: someone cannot do it, circumstances prevent it, or a rule does not allow it.

This is a scope system, not a tense conjugation. Thai verbs stay unchanged, and the same ไม่ได้ can occur in past, present, or future contexts. English learners must therefore resist translating didn't, can't, and may not one word at a time.

One form, two structural positions

Keep the event and its object together. Then observe whether ไม่ได้ comes before or after that unit.

FrameSubstitutionLikely meaning
subject + ไม่ได้ + [event]ฉันไม่ได้โทรหาลูกค้าI did not call the customer
subject + [event] + ไม่ได้ฉันโทรหาลูกค้าไม่ได้I cannot call the customer
subject + ไม่ได้ + [V + object]เขาไม่ได้เปิดประตูhe did not open the door
subject + [V + object] + ไม่ได้เขาเปิดประตูไม่ได้he cannot open the door
place/topic + [event] + ไม่ได้ตรงนี้จอดรถไม่ได้parking here is impossible or forbidden

เมื่อเช้าฉันไม่ได้โทรหาลูกค้าค่ะ

muea chao chan mai dai tho ha luk kha kha

I didn't call the customer this morning.

ตอนนี้ฉันโทรหาลูกค้าไม่ได้ค่ะ สัญญาณหาย

ton ni chan tho ha luk kha mai dai kha sanyan hai

I can't call the customer now; the signal has gone.

เขาไม่ได้เปิดประตูครับ

khao mai dai poet pratu khrap

He didn't open the door.

กุญแจดอกนี้เปิดประตูไม่ได้ครับ

kunchae dok ni poet pratu mai dai khrap

This key can't open the door.

The first member of each pair denies a contextual event. The second evaluates whether that complete event is possible. In the key example, the key is the topic whose properties fail to enable opening; Thai need not add an English passive.

💡
Bracket the event before translating: ไม่ได้ [โทรหาลูกค้า] versus [โทรหาลูกค้า] ไม่ได้. If the object appears after ไม่ได้ in the second pattern, English order has probably pulled the Thai words apart incorrectly.

Preverbal ไม่ได้ is not “past tense”

Preverbal ไม่ได้ often translates as did not because speakers frequently deny a completed past event. But present correction and scheduled future nonoccurrence use the same order.

ตอนนี้ผมไม่ได้พักครับ กำลังตอบอีเมล

ton ni phom mai dai phak khrap kamlang top imen

I'm not resting right now; I'm answering email.

วันจันทร์หน้าเราไม่ได้เข้าออฟฟิศค่ะ

wan chan na rao mai dai khao opfit kha

Next Monday we aren't going into the office.

The time phrases locate the event. In the first, ไม่ได้ corrects an assumption about what the speaker is doing now. In the second, a schedule supplies future reference. No verb ending changes.

Plain ไม่ + verb is especially common for habits, preferences, properties, and straightforward future refusal. Preverbal ไม่ได้ often foregrounds a particular nonoccurrence or corrects an expectation.

ผมไม่กินอาหารเผ็ดครับ

phom mai kin ahan phet khrap

I don't eat spicy food.

มื้อเที่ยงวันนี้ผมไม่ได้กินอาหารเผ็ดครับ

mue thiang wan ni phom mai dai kin ahan phet khrap

I didn't eat spicy food at lunch today.

This contrast is useful but not a rigid present-versus-past division. Predicate type and discourse matter: the first describes a general practice, while the second denies one bounded event.

Postpredicate ไม่ได้: what blocks the event?

Postpredicate ไม่ได้ gives the positive event narrow scope under a negative possibility. Context identifies the source: skill, physical capacity, a broken object, lack of time, or a rule.

ฉันอ่านลายมือนี้ไม่ได้ค่ะ

chan an lai mue ni mai dai kha

I can't read this handwriting.

วันนี้คุณพ่อเดินไกลไม่ได้ครับ

wan ni khun pho doen klai mai dai khrap

Dad can't walk far today.

Neither sentence says whether the limitation is permanent. Add a reason or a more specific ability word when the source matters.

Rules create a “not allowed” reading:

บริเวณนี้สูบบุหรี่ไม่ได้ค่ะ

boriwen ni sup buri mai dai kha

Smoking isn't allowed in this area.

ห้องเก็บของเข้าไม่ได้ครับ เฉพาะพนักงานเท่านั้น

hong kep khong khao mai dai khrap chapho phanakngan thaonan

You may not enter the storage room; it is for staff only.

The restriction makes permission salient, but the form itself does not name an authority. ห้ามสูบบุหรี่ is a direct (formal-public/neutral-signage) prohibition; สูบบุหรี่ไม่ได้ can sound like an explanation of the rule. The permission page develops this contextual source distinction.

Adding อาจ or จะ does not erase the positional contrast.

พรุ่งนี้ฉันอาจไม่ได้ไปประชุมค่ะ

phrung ni chan at mai dai pai prachum kha

Tomorrow I may not attend the meeting.

พรุ่งนี้ฉันอาจไปประชุมไม่ได้ค่ะ

phrung ni chan at pai prachum mai dai kha

Tomorrow I may be unable to attend the meeting.

The first leaves open whether the meeting event will occur; it may simply not be in the plan. The second suggests a barrier to attendance. Similarly, จะไม่ได้ไป often means “will not get to go / will not be going,” whereas จะไปไม่ได้ says going will be impossible. This is genuinely subtle, and context can make the practical outcomes overlap. The dependable fact is what each negation scopes over.

With ยัง, position again matters:

ผมยังไม่ได้ยืนยันการจองครับ

phom yang mai dai yuenyan kan chong khrap

I haven't confirmed the booking yet.

ตอนนี้ยังยืนยันการจองไม่ได้ค่ะ ระบบปิดปรับปรุง

ton ni yang yuenyan kan chong mai dai kha rabop pit prapprung

The booking still can't be confirmed; the system is down for maintenance.

The first tracks an unrealized event. The second tracks continuing impossibility. See ยังไม่ for the “not yet” viewpoint.

Short replies and interpersonal force

ไม่ได้ครับ/ค่ะ can answer a possibility or permission question because the event is recoverable. It may mean “I can't,” “you may not,” or “that won't work.” A reason often prevents it from sounding like a flat refusal.

วันนี้เลื่อนนัดเป็นห้าโมงได้ไหมคะ

wan ni luean nat pen ha mong dai mai kha

Can we move today's appointment to five?

ไม่ได้ครับ ห้าโมงร้านปิดแล้ว

mai dai khrap ha mong ran pit laeo

I'm afraid not; the shop is already closed at five.

This short answer repeats the negative of ได้ from the question. It is not a universal word for no. A question about identity would instead invite ไม่ใช่, and an availability question could invite ไม่มี.

An ordinary-polite dialogue

เมื่อกี้ทำไมไม่รับสายคะ

muea ki thammai mai rap sai kha

Why didn't you answer just now?

ผมไม่ได้ยินโทรศัพท์ครับ อยู่ในห้องเสียงดัง

phom mai dai yin thorasap khrap yu nai hong siang dang

I didn't hear the phone; I was in a noisy room.

ตอนนี้สะดวกคุยต่อไหมคะ

ton ni saduak khui to mai kha

Is it convenient to keep talking now?

คุยได้ครับ ผมออกมาข้างนอกแล้ว

khui dai khrap phom ok ma khang nok laeo

Yes, I can. I've come outside now.

The reply to the first question uses preverbal ไม่ได้ to deny perception. The final pair uses postpredicate ได้ for available opportunity. Subject omission is natural once the speakers are established.

Common Mistakes

1. Using preverbal ไม่ได้ for learned inability

❌ ฉันไม่ได้ว่ายน้ำค่ะ

Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘I don't know how to swim’; this denies a swimming event.

✅ ฉันว่ายน้ำไม่เป็นค่ะ

chan wai nam mai pen kha

I don't know how to swim.

2. Using postpredicate ไม่ได้ for simple nonoccurrence

❌ เมื่อวานผมไปธนาคารไม่ได้ครับ

Incorrect for the intended simple report ‘I didn't go’; this says something prevented the trip.

✅ เมื่อวานผมไม่ได้ไปธนาคารครับ

muea wan phom mai dai pai thanakhan khrap

I didn't go to the bank yesterday.

3. Leaving the object after potential ไม่ได้

❌ ฉันอ่านไม่ได้ป้ายนี้ค่ะ

Incorrect — the object belongs inside the event before potential ไม่ได้.

✅ ฉันอ่านป้ายนี้ไม่ได้ค่ะ ตัวหนังสือเล็กมาก

chan an pai ni mai dai kha tua nangsue lek mak

I can't read this sign; the print is very small.

4. Putting ไม่ได้ before an event to express prohibition

❌ บริเวณหน้าร้านไม่ได้สูบบุหรี่ค่ะ

Incorrect for stating a prohibition; preverbal ไม่ได้ instead denies a smoking event in context.

✅ บริเวณหน้าร้านสูบบุหรี่ไม่ได้ค่ะ

boriwen na ran sup buri mai dai kha

Smoking isn't allowed in front of the shop.

💡
Postpredicate ไม่ได้ tells you that the event is unavailable, not why. Look for a rule, physical condition, skill, schedule, or object property before choosing English cannot or not allowed.

Key Takeaways

  • ไม่ได้ + event denies occurrence; event + ไม่ได้ denies ability, possibility, or permission.
  • Objects and close complements stay inside the event phrase before final ไม่ได้.
  • Preverbal ไม่ได้ is not past tense: time expressions can anchor it in past, present, or future.
  • Modal and aspect markers preserve the same scope contrast, and a short ไม่ได้ reply inherits its event from the question.
