ยังไม่ + predicate means that the negative situation continues up to a relevant point: the event has not happened, the state does not hold, or the result has not been reached yet. In รถยังไม่มา, nonarrival remains true while arrival is still relevant to the conversation.
The construction is (neutral) in standard Central Thai. It does not promise that the positive situation will definitely happen later. It normally signals that a possible or expected transition remains under discussion. Time and context determine whether English uses isn't ... yet, hasn't ... yet, or hadn't ... yet.
The core order: ยัง + ไม่ + predicate
ยัง scopes over the negative predicate. Keep both elements before a simple event or state.
| Frame | Predicate | Natural result | Open transition |
|---|---|---|---|
| subject/topic + ยังไม่ + predicate | มา | รถยังไม่มา | the vehicle may arrive |
| พร้อม | ห้องยังไม่พร้อม | the room may become ready | |
| รู้คำตอบ | ฉันยังไม่รู้คำตอบ | knowledge may be gained | |
The train hasn't arrived yet; it will probably be another ten minutes late.
hong prachum yang mai phrom kha chang kamlang chek khrueang siang
The meeting room isn't ready yet; a technician is checking the sound system.
chan yang mai ru phon truat kha
I don't know the test result yet.
English normally puts yet late in the clause. Thai puts ยังไม่ before what remains untrue. Reversing the order to ไม่ยัง or moving ไม่ to the end does not create the ordinary construction.
Plain ไม่ versus ยังไม่
Plain ไม่ simply denies a predicate. ยังไม่ adds a live boundary: the positive situation has not been reached up to now or another reference point.
phom mai kin khao chao khrap
I don't eat breakfast.
wan ni phom yang mai kin khao chao khrap
I'm not eating breakfast yet today.
The first describes a habit or preference. The second describes today's pending meal. In a natural situation, the second often suggests that eating remains possible, but a speaker can cancel that suggestion: ยังไม่กิน และวันนี้คงไม่กินแล้ว “I haven't eaten yet, and I probably won't today.” The expectation is therefore a discourse inference, not a grammatical guarantee.
With states, the contrast works the same way:
อากาศไม่ร้อนค่ะ
akat mai ron kha
The weather isn't hot.
ton chao akat yang mai ron kha
In the morning the weather isn't hot yet.
The second sentence makes later warming relevant. No English copula is translated separately because ร้อน is already the Thai predicate.
ยังไม่ได้ and an unrealized event
For a particular event whose occurrence is pending, Thai commonly uses ยังไม่ได้ + event. The ได้ belongs inside the negative sequence and helps present the event as unrealized up to the reference point.
rao yang mai dai chong tua kha
We haven't booked the tickets yet.
phom yang mai dai top khokhwam khrap
I haven't replied to the message yet.
Do not treat ได้ as a past ending. Compare ยังไม่ได้ตอบ “have not replied yet” with ยังตอบไม่ได้ “still cannot reply.” The change in position changes scope.
ton ni yang top khokhwam mai dai khrap thorasap kamlang apdet
I still can't reply to the message; my phone is updating.
In the first pattern, the reply event has not occurred. In the second, the reply event remains unavailable. The ไม่ได้ page develops this positional contrast.
An activity can remain unfinished
When someone has started an activity but has not reached its endpoint, Thai often places the negative directly before the result predicate: ยัง + activity + ไม่เสร็จ/ไม่จบ.
พี่ยังเขียนรายงานไม่เสร็จค่ะ
phi yang khian raingan mai set kha
My older colleague still hasn't finished writing the report.
phom yang an nangsue lem ni mai chop khrap
I still haven't finished this book.
These sentences do not simply deny writing or reading; they say the activity has occurred but its result is unreached. ยังไม่ได้เขียนรายงาน would instead say that the writing event has not yet taken place. This is a real scope difference, and there is no single English not yet position that predicts it.
Past and future reference points
ยังไม่ measures continuation up to whichever point the discourse supplies, not necessarily the moment of speaking.
At ten last night, the shuttle still hadn't arrived.
phrung ni wela ni ngan at yang mai set khrap
At this time tomorrow, the work may still not be finished.
The first has a past reference point; the second has a projected future one. อาจ takes wider scope over the continuing negative state. Neither sentence requires a Thai equivalent of English had or will have.
Short replies: ยัง as “not yet”
Questions ending in หรือยัง ask whether a transition has been reached. A natural negative short answer is simply ยังครับ/ค่ะ, with the fuller ยังไม่... available when clarification helps.
song baep fom laeo rue yang kha
Have you sent the form yet?
yang khrap kamlang truat na sutthai yu
Not yet; I'm checking the last page.
This short ยัง inherits “the sending has not happened” from the question. It does not mean generic no. It often sounds less final than a flat ไม่ because it keeps the expected completion open.
An ordinary-polite dialogue
khun dai rap phon truat rue yang kha
Have you received the test result yet?
yang khrap rongphayaban yang mai dai song imen ma
Not yet. The hospital hasn't sent the email.
If there is still no news tomorrow, let's call and ask.
The dialogue moves from short ยัง to full ยังไม่ได้ and ยังไม่มี. Each negative selects the predicate type required by the active meaning.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English final “yet” order
Incorrect — ยังไม่ stays before the predicate in a statement; a question uses หรือยัง.
rot yang mai ma khrap
The vehicle hasn't arrived yet.
2. Using plain ไม่ for a pending event
Incorrect for the intended ‘I haven't submitted it yet’; this sounds like a decision or plan not to submit today.
wan ni chan yang mai dai song bai samak kha
I haven't submitted the application yet today.
3. Confusing not-yet occurrence with continuing inability
Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘The system still can't open the file’; this says the system has not opened it yet.
rabop yang poet fai ni mai dai khrap
The system still can't open this file.
4. Denying the activity when only its endpoint is missing
Incorrect for ‘I started but haven't finished’; this says the reading has not yet occurred.
chan yang an niyai lem ni mai chop kha
I still haven't finished this novel.
Key Takeaways
- ยังไม่ + predicate keeps a negative situation true up to a relevant point.
- The positive transition is usually relevant or expected, but its future occurrence is not guaranteed.
- ยังไม่ได้ + event means the event has not occurred yet; ยัง + event + ไม่ได้ means it is still impossible.
- With a begun activity, ยัง + activity + ไม่เสร็จ/ไม่จบ locates negation at the missing result.
