ไม่อยู่ with Location and Presence

ไม่อยู่ is the ordinary (neutral) negative of locative อยู่ “be located, be present, stay.” It says that an identifiable person or thing is not at the stated or understood place. คุณนิดไม่อยู่ therefore means “Khun Nit isn't here/in,” not that Khun Nit does not exist.

English uses forms of be for both location and progressive aspect. Thai does not. In the locative negative, อยู่ is itself the predicate and ไม่ comes directly before it. The form stays unchanged across time; discourse, time expressions, and surrounding markers supply the temporal viewpoint.

The negative location frame

The productive order is entity + ไม่อยู่ + place. The entity or place can be omitted when the conversation has already established it.

Entity/topicNegated predicatePlaceReading
คุณหมอไม่อยู่ที่คลินิกthe doctor is absent from the clinic
แฟ้มสีแดงไม่อยู่บนชั้นthe known red folder is not on the shelf
ผมจะไม่อยู่ช่วงบ่ายI will be away in the afternoon
ผู้จัดการอาจไม่อยู่the manager may be absent
ไม่อยู่แล้วthe known person or thing is no longer present

ตอนนี้คุณหมอไม่อยู่ที่คลินิกค่ะ

ton ni khun mo mai yu thi khlinik kha

The doctor isn't at the clinic right now.

แฟ้มสีแดงไม่อยู่บนชั้นครับ

faem si daeng mai yu bon chan khrap

The red folder isn't on the shelf.

บ่ายนี้ผมจะไม่อยู่ที่ร้านครับ

bai ni phom cha mai yu thi ran khrap

I won't be at the shop this afternoon.

In each sentence, the absent entity is already specific enough to track: a particular doctor, folder, or speaker. Thai needs no article before the noun and no conjugated form corresponding to isn't, wasn't, or won't be. จะ presents the projected absence in the last example.

💡
Use ไม่อยู่ when the missing participant could in principle be found somewhere else. If no relevant participant exists or is available anywhere in the domain, use ไม่มี.

ไม่อยู่ versus ไม่มี

The contrast is easiest to see with the same kind of object:

บัตรสำรองไม่อยู่ในกล่องค่ะ

bat samrong mai yu nai klong kha

The spare card isn't in the box.

ในกล่องไม่มีบัตรสำรองครับ

nai klong mai mi bat samrong khrap

There is no spare card in the box.

The first sentence tracks one known spare card and rejects the box as its location. The second describes the contents of the box: no spare card is there. This difference concerns information structure, not whether the entity is human or inanimate. For the broader existential system, see ไม่มี.

Location can be the contrastive topic. ที่บ้านเขาไม่อยู่ is possible when the speaker means “At home, he isn't there,” but the neutral first version for learners is เขาไม่อยู่บ้าน. Front the place only when discourse has a real contrast such as home versus office.

ที่สำนักงานเขาไม่อยู่ค่ะ แต่เห็นรถจอดอยู่หน้าบ้าน

thi samnakngan khao mai yu kha tae hen rot chot yu na ban

He isn't at the office, but I saw his car parked in front of the house.

The first อยู่ is lexical and negated. The second follows จอด and presents the parked state as continuing. English uses be in both translations, but Thai word order distinguishes negative location from aspectual continuity.

ไม่อยู่, ไม่ได้อยู่, and อยู่ไม่ได้

These three strings contain the same familiar pieces, but their scopes differ.

  • ไม่อยู่ + place: plain absence or a decision not to stay.
  • ไม่ได้อยู่ + place: often corrects an assumption about location or participation.
  • อยู่ + place/ต่อ + ไม่ได้: remaining there is impossible or not allowed.

เมื่อเช้าฉันไม่อยู่บ้านค่ะ

muea chao chan mai yu ban kha

I wasn't home this morning.

ตอนเกิดเหตุฉันไม่ได้อยู่บ้านค่ะ ฉันอยู่ที่ทำงาน

ton koet het chan mai dai yu ban kha chan yu thi tham ngan

When the incident happened, I wasn't at home; I was at work.

คืนนี้ฉันอยู่ที่นี่ไม่ได้ค่ะ โรงแรมปิดปรับปรุง

khuen ni chan yu thi ni mai dai kha rongraem pit prapprung

I can't stay here tonight; the hotel is closed for renovation.

The first is a simple past absence because เมื่อเช้า supplies the time. The second explicitly rejects a proposed location. The third places ไม่ได้ after the staying predicate and denies its possibility. Calling ได้ a “past marker” would miss all three contrasts.

Modal elements precede the negative locative when they take wider scope:

วันนี้ผู้จัดการอาจไม่อยู่ครับ ลองโทรถามก่อน

wan ni phu chatkan at mai yu khrap long tho tham kon

The manager may not be in today; try calling first.

Here อาจ marks uncertainty about the negative proposition. This differs from อยู่ออฟฟิศไม่ได้ “cannot stay at the office,” where circumstances block the positive staying event.

Expected arrival and changed presence

ยังไม่อยู่ + place can say that the expected presence has not been established yet. In many arrival contexts, however, ยังไม่มา “hasn't come yet” is more direct because it names the missing transition. Choose the predicate that matches the active question.

คุณอ้อยยังไม่อยู่ที่โต๊ะค่ะ น่าจะกำลังขึ้นลิฟต์

khun oi yang mai yu thi to kha na cha kamlang khuen lip

Khun Oi isn't at her desk yet; she's probably coming up in the lift.

ไม่อยู่แล้ว says that earlier presence or location no longer holds. It can mean someone has left or an object has been moved.

โต๊ะตัวเก่าไม่อยู่ตรงนี้แล้วครับ ย้ายไปชั้นบน

to tua kao mai yu trong ni laeo khrap yai pai chan bon

The old table is no longer here; it was moved upstairs.

แล้ว marks change relative to the active reference point, not simple past tense. With a person, ไม่อยู่แล้ว can also euphemistically mean “has passed away” in a suitable sensitive context. That (gentle euphemistic) reading comes from context and should not be assumed in an ordinary office exchange.

Short negative replies

When the question asks whether a known person is present, ไม่อยู่ครับ/ค่ะ is a complete answer. Thai repeats the relevant predicate rather than relying on a universal word for no.

วันนี้คุณสมชายอยู่ไหมคะ

wan ni khun somchai yu mai kha

Is Khun Somchai in today?

ไม่อยู่ครับ ออกไปพบลูกค้า

mai yu khrap ok pai phop luk kha

No, he isn't; he went out to meet a client.

At a reception desk, adding the reason or an expected return time sounds more helpful than a bare negative. Polite particles mark the interaction; they do not change locative scope.

An ordinary-polite dialogue

กระเป๋าของฉันอยู่ในรถไหมคะ

krapao khong chan yu nai rot mai kha

Is my bag in the car?

ไม่อยู่ครับ ผมเพิ่งดูที่เบาะหลัง

mai yu khrap phom phoeng du thi bo lang

No, it isn't. I just checked the back seat.

งั้นอาจอยู่ที่ร้านกาแฟค่ะ

ngan at yu thi ran kafae kha

Then it may be at the café.

The bag remains the understood topic after the first turn, so both speakers omit it naturally. English normally repeats it; Thai relies on the stable discourse topic.

Common Mistakes

1. Using ไม่มี for a known person's temporary absence

❌ วันนี้คุณนาไม่มีที่ร้านค่ะ

Incorrect for saying that the identifiable person is away from the shop.

✅ วันนี้คุณนาไม่อยู่ที่ร้านค่ะ

wan ni khun na mai yu thi ran kha

Khun Na isn't at the shop today.

2. Putting ไม่ after the location predicate

❌ หนังสืออยู่ไม่บนโต๊ะครับ

Incorrect — ไม่ precedes lexical อยู่.

✅ หนังสือเล่มนั้นไม่อยู่บนโต๊ะครับ

nangsue lem nan mai yu bon to khrap

That book isn't on the table.

3. Confusing absence with inability to remain

❌ ผมไม่อยู่ต่อครับ รถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกแล้ว

Incorrect for the intended inability ‘I can't stay’; this can sound like a decision not to stay.

✅ ผมอยู่ต่อไม่ได้ครับ รถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกแล้ว

phom yu to mai dai khrap rot thiao sutthai ok laeo

I can't stay any longer; the last bus has left.

4. Treating แล้ว as a past ending

❌ เมื่อวานเธอไม่อยู่แล้วค่ะ

Incorrect for a plain report that she was absent yesterday; แล้ว adds a no-longer or changed-state reading.

✅ เมื่อวานเธอไม่อยู่ที่ทำงานค่ะ

muea wan thoe mai yu thi tham ngan kha

She wasn't at work yesterday.

💡
For a short reply, echo the predicate in the question: อยู่ไหม—ไม่อยู่. This confirms negative presence precisely and avoids choosing an unrelated generic negative such as ไม่มี or ไม่ใช่.

Key Takeaways

  • entity + ไม่อยู่ + place denies the location or presence of an identifiable entity.
  • ไม่มี describes nonexistence or nonavailability; อยู่ไม่ได้ describes inability to remain.
  • ไม่ได้อยู่ often corrects a proposed location, while plain ไม่อยู่ reports absence.
  • Time, modality, and change come from context and markers such as จะ, อาจ, ยัง, and แล้ว.
