Thai อยู่ has a concrete lexical use meaning “be located, live, or stay,” and a related post-predicate use that presents a situation as continuing. Compare เขาอยู่บ้าน “he is at home” with เขาทำงานอยู่ “he is working.” The first อยู่ supplies the location predicate; the second follows ทำงาน and keeps that activity in view. English often translates both constructions with a form of be, but their Thai structures are different.
Lexical อยู่ locates an entity
The basic locative frame is entity + อยู่ + place. The place may begin with ที่ “at,” ใน “in,” บน “on,” or another spatial relator, but familiar place names and common destinations can follow อยู่ directly.
| Meaning | Productive frame | Natural substitution |
|---|---|---|
| current location | entity + อยู่ + place | คุณนิดอยู่ในห้องประชุม |
| residence | person + อยู่ + city/home | พี่สาวอยู่เชียงใหม่ |
| temporary stay | person + อยู่ + place + duration | ผมอยู่กรุงเทพฯ สามวัน |
| continuing activity | subject + action + อยู่ | เขาทำงานอยู่ |
| persisting state | subject + ยัง + state + อยู่ | ประตูยังเปิดอยู่ |
| negative location | entity + ไม่อยู่ + place | หมอไม่อยู่ที่คลินิก |
ตอนนี้ผมอยู่ที่ร้านครับ
ton ni phom yu thi ran khrap
I'm at the shop now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; current location)
น้องชายฉันอยู่ขอนแก่นค่ะ
nong chai chan yu khon kaen kha
My younger brother lives in Khon Kaen. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; residence understood from context)
กระเป๋าอยู่ใต้โต๊ะข้างหน้าต่างครับ
krapao yu tai to khang natang khrap
The bag is under the table by the window. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; known object located)
อยู่ is the predicate in these examples. Thai does not insert เป็น before the place, and อยู่ does not change for person, number, or time. The more general locative-predicate page contrasts this known-entity frame with existential location + มี + entity.
One form, several time profiles
With people, the same lexical frame can describe being somewhere now, residing there, or staying for a limited period. Time expressions and duration select the interpretation; อยู่ itself remains unchanged.
ปีที่แล้วเราอยู่ขอนแก่นค่ะ
pi thi laeo rao yu khon kaen kha
Last year we lived in Khon Kaen. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; past residence from the time phrase)
สัปดาห์หน้าผมจะอยู่ที่นี่สองคืนครับ
sapda na phom cha yu thi ni song khuen khrap
Next week I'll stay here for two nights. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; prospective temporary stay)
ปีที่แล้ว supplies past reference in the first sentence. สัปดาห์หน้า, จะ, and สองคืน frame the second as a future stay. จะ contributes prospect or intention; it is not a future ending on อยู่. Similarly, เคยอยู่ means “have previously lived/stayed,” while ยังอยู่ means “still be here/there.”
คุณยายยังอยู่ที่บ้านเดิมค่ะ
khun yai yang yu thi ban doem kha
Grandmother still lives in the same house. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; continued residence)
Post-predicate อยู่ presents continuity
After another predicate, อยู่ no longer supplies a place by itself. It presents the action or state as holding at the reference time: อ่านหนังสืออยู่ “be reading,” รออยู่ “be waiting,” ประตูเปิดอยู่ “the door is open.” With an action, this often corresponds to an English progressive; with a state or result, English may simply use be or still.
ตอนโทรมา ผมกำลังขับรถอยู่ครับ
ton tho ma phom kamlang khap rot yu khrap
When you called, I was driving. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; ongoing action)
ลูกค้ากำลังรออยู่หน้าร้านค่ะ
luk kha kamlang ro yu na ran kha
The customer is waiting in front of the shop. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; continuing activity plus location)
ไฟในห้องครัวยังเปิดอยู่ครับ
fai nai hong khrua yang poet yu khrap
The kitchen light is still on. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; persisting result state)
In รออยู่หน้าร้าน, post-predicate อยู่ supports the continuing viewpoint, while หน้าร้าน states where the waiting occurs. In ยังเปิดอยู่, ยัง means “still” and อยู่ presents the open configuration as persisting. Neither use requires the event to be physically motionless: ขับรถอยู่ is perfectly compatible with movement.
The อยู่ progressive page develops the aspectual system in greater depth. At A2, the essential contrast is position: lexical อยู่ + place versus predicate + อยู่.
Negation distinguishes absence from non-continuation
With lexical location, ไม่อยู่ + place means that a known person or thing is absent from that place. With a post-predicate construction, negation normally belongs before the predicate being denied. ไม่ได้อ่านอยู่ can correct an assumption that someone is currently reading; ยังไม่เปิด says something is not open yet.
วันนี้ผู้จัดการไม่อยู่ที่ร้านค่ะ
wan ni phu chatkan mai yu thi ran kha
The manager isn't at the shop today. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; known person's location denied)
ผมไม่ได้ดูโทรทัศน์อยู่ครับ กำลังทำอาหาร
phom mai dai du thorathat yu khrap kamlang tham ahan
I'm not watching television; I'm cooking. (ordinary corrective speech, male speaker)
The second sentence denies an ongoing activity in a corrective context. It should not be generalized into an English-style auxiliary formula. Thai negative scope depends on what is being rejected; the dedicated ไม่อยู่ page treats absence and related readings.
อยู่ with posture and adjacent verbs
Posture verbs can precede an activity and combine with อยู่: นั่งอ่านหนังสืออยู่ “sit reading,” ยืนรออยู่ “stand waiting.” The conceptual order is posture first, activity second, continuation later. The later verb is not an infinitive.
คุณพ่อนั่งอ่านข่าวอยู่ที่ระเบียงครับ
khun pho nang an khao yu thi rabiang khrap
Father is sitting reading the news on the balcony. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; posture, activity, continuity, then place)
This sequence contains several meaningful pieces, not a conjugated block: นั่ง supplies posture, อ่านข่าว the activity and object, อยู่ its current continuation, and ที่ระเบียง the place.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ตอนนี้อยู่แถวไหนคะ
ton ni yu thaeo nai kha
What area are you in now? (polite question, female speaker; addressee omitted as recoverable)
อยู่หน้าธนาคารครับ กำลังรอรถอยู่
yu na thanakhan khrap kamlang ro rot yu
I'm in front of the bank, waiting for the bus. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; lexical and post-predicate อยู่)
ต้องรออีกนานไหมคะ
tong ro ik nan mai kha
Do you have to wait much longer? (polite follow-up, female speaker)
ไม่นานครับ รถกำลังมา
mai nan khrap rot kamlang ma
Not long; the bus is coming. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Using เป็น for physical location
❌ คุณนิดเป็นในห้องประชุมค่ะ
Incorrect—เป็น does not locate a person.
✅ คุณนิดอยู่ในห้องประชุมด้านในค่ะ
khun nit yu nai hong prachum dan nai kha
Khun Nit is in the inner meeting room. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Reversing the lexical locative frame
❌ บนโต๊ะอยู่โทรศัพท์ครับ
Incorrect for locating a known phone; put the entity before อยู่.
✅ โทรศัพท์ของผมอยู่บนโต๊ะครับ
thorasap khong phom yu bon to khrap
My phone is on the table. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Putting aspectual อยู่ before its activity
❌ เขาอยู่ทำรายงานค่ะ
Incorrect for neutral 'he is working on the report'; post-predicate อยู่ follows the activity.
✅ เขากำลังทำรายงานอยู่ค่ะ
khao kamlang tham raingan yu kha
He's working on the report. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Adding อยู่ to every motion destination
❌ พรุ่งนี้เราไปอยู่สวนสาธารณะกันค่ะ
Wrong for the intended simple trip to the park; this instead suggests going to stay there.
✅ พรุ่งนี้เราไปสวนสาธารณะด้วยกันค่ะ
phrung ni rao pai suan satharana duai kan kha
Tomorrow we're going to the park together. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
5. Moving ไม่ after the location
❌ วันนี้หมออยู่คลินิกไม่ครับ
Incorrect—ไม่ precedes อยู่ in the negative location frame.
✅ วันนี้หมอไม่อยู่ที่คลินิกครับ
wan ni mo mai yu thi khlinik khrap
The doctor isn't at the clinic today. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
Use entity + อยู่ + place for location, residence, or staying. Use predicate + อยู่ when presenting an action, state, or result as continuing. Time expressions and aspectual material locate the unchanged form อยู่, while its position and complement structure tell you which function it has.
