Basic Motion with ไป and มา

Thai ไป and มา do more than translate English go and come. They locate motion relative to a deictic center—a place the conversation treats as “here.” ไป leads away from that center; มา leads toward it. The center is often the speaker's current location, but a speaker can adopt the listener's location, a meeting place, or a point inside a story. This viewpoint explains choices that a word-for-word English rule cannot.

The core contrast: away versus toward

As full motion predicates, ไป and มา may be followed by a destination or source phrase. Both remain unchanged across subjects and times.

Motion frameProductive patternNatural substitution
away from centersubject + ไป + destinationฉันไปตลาด
toward centersubject + มา + destination/centerเพื่อนมาบ้านฉัน

motion plus purposeไป/มา + actionไปซื้อกาแฟ / มารับเอกสาร
carried objectเอา + object + ไป/มาเอาร่มไป / เอาหนังสือมา
negative motionไม่/ยังไม่ + ไป/มาพรุ่งนี้ไม่ไป / รถยังไม่มา

เดี๋ยวผมไปธนาคารครับ

diao phom pai thanakhan khrap

I'll go to the bank in a moment. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; motion away from the present center)

เย็นนี้เพื่อนจะมาบ้านฉันค่ะ

yen ni phuean cha ma ban chan kha

A friend is coming to my house this evening. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; motion toward the speaker's home)

เด็กวิ่งมาหาแม่ครับ

dek wing ma ha mae khrap

The child runs over to their mother. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; running toward the relevant person)

English sometimes allows either come or go depending on conversational stance, and Thai does too—but the choices are not arbitrary. The speaker selects a center and presents motion relative to it.

💡
Draw an imaginary arrow. If it points away from the adopted “here,” choose ไป; if it points toward that center, choose มา. Then check whether the conversation has shifted the center to the listener or a shared destination.

The center can be adopted, not merely physical

On the phone, someone at home may ask จะมาบ้านกี่โมง “What time will you come home?” because home is the speaker's location. A person who is not yet at a party can still ask พรุ่งนี้คุณจะมางานไหม “Will you come to the event tomorrow?” when speaking as host or participant and treating the event as the shared center.

พรุ่งนี้คุณจะมางานเลี้ยงไหมคะ

phrung ni khun cha ma ngan liang mai kha

Will you come to the party tomorrow? (polite question, female speaker; party adopted as the shared destination)

ครับ ผมจะไปถึงประมาณหนึ่งทุ่ม

khrap phom cha pai thueng praman nueng thum

Yes. I'll arrive at about seven p.m. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; his journey viewed away from his current location)

The speakers can use different centers in adjacent turns without contradiction. มา invites the listener toward the shared event; ไปถึง profiles the traveler's path and arrival. A rigid rule that มา always means motion toward the speaker's body would miss this ordinary perspective shift. Academic descriptions therefore treat ไป/มา as deictic and viewpoint-sensitive, not simply as opposite dictionary labels.

Destinations and sources

Common destinations can follow the motion verb directly: ไปตลาด, ไปโรงเรียน, กลับบ้าน, มาเมืองไทย. ที่ is not an obligatory translation of English to. Sources commonly use จาก “from,” and endpoints can be made explicit with ถึง “reach.”

พี่ชายผมมาจากภูเก็ตครับ

phi chai phom ma chak phuket khrap

My older brother comes/is from Phuket. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; source with จาก)

รถไฟไปถึงเชียงใหม่ตอนเช้าค่ะ

rotfai pai thueng chiang mai ton chao kha

The train reaches Chiang Mai in the morning. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; path plus endpoint)

The first example can describe an arriving journey or someone's origin, depending on context. The unchanged verb does not decide time by itself.

Purpose sequences: ไปซื้อ and มารับ

When ไป or มา precedes another action, the sequence often combines motion with purpose: ไปซื้ออาหาร “go buy food,” มาเยี่ยมเพื่อน “come visit a friend,” มารับเอกสาร “come pick up documents.” The second verb is not an infinitive; Thai has no special infinitive form here.

ฉันไปซื้อยาให้คุณยายค่ะ

chan pai sue ya hai khun yai kha

I'm going to buy medicine for Grandmother. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; away-motion plus purpose)

ลูกค้ามารับสินค้าแล้วครับ

luk kha ma rap sinkha laeo khrap

The customer has come to collect the product. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; toward-motion plus purpose)

Order reflects the event: motion establishes access to the place where the later action occurs. The go-purpose page examines argument sharing and borderline cases in depth.

Direction after an action

ไป and มา can also follow another verb. With a carried object, เอาเอกสารไป means take the documents away from the center, while เอาเอกสารมา means bring them toward it. With manner of motion, เดินไป is walk away/onward and เดินมา is walk toward the center.

ช่วยเอาแก้วพวกนี้ไปไว้ในครัวหน่อยค่ะ

chuai ao kaeo phuak ni pai wai nai khrua noi kha

Please take these glasses and put them in the kitchen. (polite request, female speaker; carried away from here)

ผมเอาเอกสารมาครับ ตามที่คุณขอ

phom ao ekkasan ma khrap tam thi khun kho

I've brought the documents, as you requested. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; carried toward the current center)

These are productive multi-verb constructions. The position of ไป/มา and the objects they share must be learned as Thai event packaging, not English phrasal verbs.

💡
Before an action, ไป/มา often gives motion and purpose: ไปซื้อ, มารับ. After an action or object, it often gives direction relative to the center: เดินมา, เอาหนังสือไป. Position changes the event structure.

Negation, time, and omission

Negation precedes the denied motion: ไม่ไป, ไม่มา, ยังไม่มา. Time phrases locate the unchanged verb: เมื่อวานไป, พรุ่งนี้มา. In a clear exchange, the subject or destination can disappear.

วันนี้คุณนิดไม่มาทำงานค่ะ

wan ni khun nit mai ma tham ngan kha

Khun Nit isn't coming to work today. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; negated toward-motion plus purpose)

รถยังไม่มาครับ รออีกสักครู่

rot yang mai ma khrap ro ik sak khru

The bus hasn't come yet; please wait a moment. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; expected arrival not reached)

The second มา is not a perfect or past form. ยังไม่ places the expected arrival before a boundary that has not yet been crossed.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

พรุ่งนี้จะไปสำนักงานไหมคะ

phrung ni cha pai samnakngan mai kha

Are you going to the office tomorrow? (polite question, female speaker; subject omitted)

ไปครับ แล้วคุณจะมาไหม

pai khrap laeo khun cha ma mai

Yes. And will you come? (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; office becomes the shared center)

มาค่ะ จะแวะซื้อกาแฟมาด้วย

ma kha cha wae sue kafae ma duai

Yes. I'll stop to buy coffee and bring it along. (ordinary polite reply, female speaker; coffee carried toward the shared office center)

ดีเลยครับ แล้วเจอกันพรุ่งนี้

di loei khrap laeo choe kan phrung ni

Great. See you tomorrow. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Choosing only by the English word

❌ ตอนนี้ฉันอยู่บ้าน คุณจะไปไหมคะ

Wrong for the intended invitation toward the speaker, who explicitly says she is already at home.

✅ ตอนนี้ฉันอยู่บ้าน คุณจะมาไหมคะ

ton ni chan yu ban khun cha ma mai kha

I'm at home now. Will you come over? (polite invitation, female speaker; motion toward her location)

2. Adding ที่ as an obligatory equivalent of “to”

❌ ตอนเช้าผมไปที่ทำงานที่ครับ

Incorrect calque—common destinations do not need a trailing Thai equivalent of English 'to.'

✅ ตอนเช้าผมไปที่ทำงานครับ

ton chao phom pai thi tham ngan khrap

In the morning I go to work. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

3. Treating the purpose verb as an infinitive

❌ ฉันไปที่จะซื้ออาหารค่ะ

Incorrect neutral motion-purpose frame—ที่จะ is not an infinitive marker here.

✅ ฉันไปซื้ออาหารกลางวันค่ะ

chan pai sue ahan klang wan kha

I'm going to buy lunch. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

4. Putting direction before the carried object

❌ ช่วยเอาไปหนังสือเล่มนี้ครับ

Incorrect neutral order—the carried object follows เอา before directional ไป.

✅ ช่วยเอาหนังสือเล่มนี้ไปให้ครูครับ

chuai ao nangsue lem ni pai hai khru khrap

Please take this book to the teacher. (polite request, male speaker)

5. Moving negation after motion

❌ วันนี้ผมไปไม่ครับ

Incorrect—ไม่ precedes ไป.

✅ วันนี้ผมไม่ไปห้างครับ

wan ni phom mai pai hang khrap

I'm not going to the mall today. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

Use ไป for motion away from the adopted center and มา for motion toward it. Let conversational viewpoint—not English vocabulary alone—establish that center. Destinations, purpose verbs, carried objects, time, and negation combine with the invariant motion verbs in construction-specific orders.
