Thai regularly places ไป “go” before another predicate to present an outward or onward trip whose purpose is the following activity: ไปซื้อยา “go buy medicine,” ไปรับลูก “go pick up one's child,” and ไปคุยกับช่าง “go talk to the technician.” The two predicates keep their invariant forms. There is no Thai word corresponding to English infinitival to between them.
This construction packages motion and purpose as one coherent plan, but it does not claim that the purpose was achieved. A person can ไปสมัครงาน “go apply for a job” without getting the job, or go to collect something and discover that it is not ready.
Motion first, intended activity second
The ordinary pattern follows the expected event order:
| Slot | Productive choices | Contribution |
|---|---|---|
| time / subject | พรุ่งนี้ผม, เมื่อเช้าแม่, ตอนนี้เพื่อน | anchors the plan or trip |
| motion | ไป | movement away or onward from the adopted center |
| purpose predicate | ซื้อ, รับ, ส่ง, คุย, พบ, ตรวจ | the intended activity after the trip |
| participants / place | ยา, ลูก, กับช่าง, ที่สำนักงาน | completes the later predicate's frame |
พรุ่งนี้ผมจะไปคุยกับช่างเรื่องค่าซ่อมครับ
phrung ni phom cha pai khui kap chang rueang kha som khrap
Tomorrow I'll go talk to the technician about the repair cost. (ordinary polite plan, male speaker)
แม่ไปรับลูกที่โรงเรียนเมื่อครึ่งชั่วโมงก่อนค่ะ
mae pai rap luk thi rongrian muea khrueng chua mong kon kha
Mother went to pick up the child at school half an hour ago. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
ฉันไปส่งเอกสารที่สำนักงานแล้วค่ะ
chan pai song ekkasan thi samnakngan laeo kha
I've gone and delivered the documents at the office. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; แล้ว presents the errand as accomplished)
In each example, ไป precedes the intended activity because the trip normally precedes that activity. The subject of ไป is also understood as the actor of คุย, รับ, or ส่ง. Objects and partners belong to the predicate that selects them: ลูก is what one picks up; เอกสาร is what one delivers; กับช่าง is the conversation partner.
Purpose is not guaranteed completion
The construction describes why someone makes the trip. Whether the second event succeeds comes from later words or context:
เจ้าหน้าที่ไปตรวจห้องแล้ว แต่ยังเข้าไม่ได้ครับ
chaonathi pai truat hong laeo tae yang khao mai dai khrap
The officer went to inspect the room, but still couldn't get in. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; the trip occurred, inspection did not proceed normally)
ผมไปรับเสื้อที่ร้าน แต่ร้านยังซักไม่เสร็จครับ
phom pai rap suea thi ran tae ran yang sak mai set khrap
I went to collect the clothes at the shop, but the shop hadn't finished washing them. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
The first clause in each sentence is compatible with failure at the goal. By contrast, ฉันไปส่งเอกสารแล้ว in the earlier example uses context and แล้ว to present delivery as completed. Thai does not build past tense into ไป: เมื่อครึ่งชั่วโมงก่อน supplies past time, while จะ in the first example makes the chain prospective.
Contrast with manner plus direction
Order separates purpose from the path contributed by a manner verb:
เด็ก ๆ ไปวิ่งที่สวนตอนเย็นค่ะ
dek dek pai wing thi suan ton yen kha
The children go running in the park in the evening. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; going precedes the running activity)
เด็ก ๆ วิ่งไปที่ประตูค่ะ
dek dek wing pai thi pratu kha
The children ran toward the door. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; running is the manner of motion)
In ไปวิ่ง, running is the purpose of going. In วิ่งไป, running is the manner by which the outward/onward path is traversed. This is an iconic contrast: changing order changes the event structure, not merely the style. See manner plus direction for longer path chains.
Destination phrases can occur where their scope remains clear. ไปซื้อของที่ตลาด makes the market the location of shopping. ไปตลาดซื้อของ is also heard in ordinary conversation, with the destination immediately after ไป; this page uses the first pattern because it shows the later predicate's frame more transparently.
Time, aspect, and negation
Markers frame different parts of the chain according to position:
เพื่อนกำลังไปดูห้องเช่าอยู่ค่ะ
phuean kamlang pai du hong chao yu kha
My friend is on the way to look at a rental room. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; the planned trip is in progress)
เมื่อวานผมไม่ได้ไปพบหมอครับ เพราะคลินิกปิด
muea wan phom mai dai pai phop mo khrap phro khlinik pit
Yesterday I didn't go see the doctor because the clinic was closed. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; broad negation denies the trip-and-purpose event)
ผมไปพบหมอไม่ได้ครับ เพราะวันนี้ต้องดูแลลูก
phom pai phop mo mai dai khrap phro wan ni tong dulae luk
I can't go see the doctor because I have to look after my child today. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; postchain ไม่ได้ expresses inability)
กำลัง...อยู่ can present the journey as underway even before the purpose activity begins. ไม่ได้ไปพบ denies occurrence of the planned trip. ไปพบไม่ได้ instead says the plan cannot be carried out or is not permitted. English auxiliary order does not determine these Thai scopes; compare the fuller negation-scope guide.
The purpose or another participant may be omitted when recoverable:
คุณจะไปส่งเอกสารตอนบ่ายใช่ไหมคะ
khun cha pai song ekkasan ton bai chai mai kha
You're going to deliver the documents this afternoon, right? (ordinary polite confirmation, female speaker)
ใช่ครับ เดี๋ยวผมไปเอง
chai khrap diao phom pai eng
Yes. I'll go myself in a moment. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; the delivery purpose is understood)
The short reply is licensed by the active discourse. It does not make ไป permanently mean “deliver documents.”
One serial plan versus coordination
ไปซื้อของ usually has one mover who is also the shopper. Coordination can separate events, add another subject, or make the second event an independent development:
ฉันไปตลาด แล้วน้องชายซื้อของให้แม่ค่ะ
chan pai talat laeo nong chai sue khong hai mae kha
I went to the market, and then my younger brother bought things for Mother. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; separate subjects and coordinated events)
This cannot be analyzed as the same shared-subject purpose chain. Also avoid labeling every ไป next to a predicate as motion-purpose. In ทำต่อไป “continue doing” and แพงไป “too expensive,” ไป has constructional meanings that do not describe a trip. The ไป lexical reference maps those uses.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers are preparing for a meeting:
บ่ายนี้คุณจะไปถ่ายเอกสารใช่ไหมคะ
bai ni khun cha pai thai ekkasan chai mai kha
You're going to make photocopies this afternoon, right? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ครับ ผมจะไปรับเอกสารต้นฉบับจากฝ่ายบัญชีก่อน
khrap phom cha pai rap ekkasan ton chabap chak fai banchi kon
Yes. I'll go collect the originals from accounting first. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้าอย่างนั้นช่วยไปซื้อปากกาเพิ่มด้วยได้ไหมคะ
tha yang nan chuai pai sue pakka phoem duai dai mai kha
In that case, could you also go buy some more pens? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ เสร็จแล้วผมจะเอาทุกอย่างกลับมาที่ห้องประชุม
dai khrap set laeo phom cha ao thuk yang klap ma thi hong prachum
Certainly. When I'm done, I'll bring everything back to the meeting room. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Reversing motion and purpose
❌ พรุ่งนี้ฉันซื้อไปยาที่ร้านค่ะ
Incorrect for ‘go buy medicine’; the purpose predicate cannot surround ไป and its object this way.
✅ พรุ่งนี้ฉันจะไปซื้อยาที่ร้านขายยาค่ะ
phrung ni chan cha pai sue ya thi ran khai ya kha
Tomorrow I'll go buy medicine at the pharmacy. (ordinary polite plan, female speaker)
2. Repeating the shared subject before the purpose
❌ ผมไปผมรับลูกที่โรงเรียนครับ
Incorrect—the one understood mover and actor is not repeated between the linked predicates.
✅ ผมไปรับลูกที่โรงเรียนครับ
phom pai rap luk thi rongrian khrap
I'm going to pick up my child at school. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
3. Repeating prospective จะ before each predicate
❌ เย็นนี้เราจะไปจะกินข้าวข้างนอกค่ะ
Incorrect—one จะ can frame the whole prospective purpose chain.
✅ เย็นนี้เราจะไปกินข้าวข้างนอกค่ะ
yen ni rao cha pai kin khao khang nok kha
This evening we'll go eat out. (ordinary polite plan, female speaker)
4. Using internal negation for broad event denial
❌ เมื่อวานผมไปไม่ซื้อของครับ
Wrong for the intended ‘I did not go shopping’; this order suggests a contrast inside the later activity rather than broad denial.
✅ เมื่อวานผมไม่ได้ไปซื้อของครับ
muea wan phom mai dai pai sue khong khrap
Yesterday I didn't go shopping. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
5. Treating ไป as a past-tense marker
❌ พรุ่งนี้เขาไปสมัครงานแล้วครับ
Wrong for a neutral future plan; ไป supplies motion and แล้ว presents a changed or attained state, not automatic future time.
✅ พรุ่งนี้เขาจะไปสมัครงานครับ
phrung ni khao cha pai samak ngan khrap
Tomorrow he's going to apply for a job. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- ไป + activity presents outward/onward movement followed by its purpose.
- The mover is normally the understood actor of the following predicate; objects belong to that predicate's frame.
- The trip does not guarantee that the purpose succeeds.
- ไปวิ่ง “go in order to run” contrasts with วิ่งไป “run away/onward.”
- Time, aspect, and negation come from context and marker scope, not verb conjugation.
