Thai ไป is an invariant motion verb meaning “go,” but its organizing idea is broader: movement away from an adopted viewpoint or onward along a path. It can head a motion clause, precede a purpose action, follow another motion or transfer predicate, and extend into viewpoint uses such as continuing onward. English translation alone cannot choose between ไป and มา; the conversational center matters.
Lexical ไป: leave or go to a destination
The lexical frame is mover + ไป + destination. Familiar destinations often follow directly: ไปบ้าน, ไปโรงเรียน, ไปตลาด. ไปที่ + place is also possible when the place is being specified or contrasted, so ที่ is not simply wrong; it is not an obligatory translation of English to either.
| Use | Frame | Natural substitution |
|---|---|---|
| go to a destination | mover + ไป + place | เขาไปธนาคาร |
| go in order to act | mover + ไป + action | เราไปซื้อของ |
| move away/onward | manner verb + ไป | เดินไป / วิ่งไป |
| take something away | เอา + object + ไป | เอาเอกสารไป |
| continue onward | predicate + ต่อไป | ทำงานต่อไป |
เช้านี้ผมไปธนาคารก่อนเข้าสำนักงานครับ
chao ni phom pai thanakhan kon khao samnakngan khrap
This morning I'm going to the bank before entering the office. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
เสาร์นี้ฉันจะไปตลาดกับคุณแม่ค่ะ
sao ni chan cha pai talat kap khun mae kha
This Saturday I'm going to the market with my mother. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
รถคันนั้นออกจากลานไปแล้วครับ
rot khan nan ok chak lan pai laeo khrap
That car has already left the lot. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; ไป gives outward direction)
The last example packages ออก...ไป as outward motion. It does not contain an English-style phrasal-verb particle copied word for word; the Thai verbs jointly construe the path. See Motion with ไป and มา for the full viewpoint contrast.
An invariant-form matrix
The headword is always ไป. Subject choice and time do not change it.
| Environment | Thai pattern | Interpretation source |
|---|---|---|
| past context | เมื่อเช้าผมไปคลินิก | เมื่อเช้า |
| motion in progress | ฉันกำลังไปสถานี | กำลัง |
| arrival completed | เขาไปถึงโรงแรมแล้ว | ถึง and แล้ว |
| prospective | พวกเราจะไปทะเล | จะ and future plan |
| negative | วันนี้เขาไม่ไปงานเลี้ยง | ไม่ before ไป |
เมื่อเช้าผมไปคลินิกใกล้บ้านครับ
muea chao phom pai khlinik klai ban khrap
I went to the clinic near my house this morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; past supplied by เมื่อเช้า)
ฉันกำลังไปสถานีรถไฟค่ะ
chan kamlang pai sathani rot fai kha
I'm on my way to the railway station. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
เขาไปถึงโรงแรมแล้วครับ
khao pai thueng rongraem laeo khrap
He has reached the hotel. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; endpoint plus แล้ว)
พวกเราจะไปทะเลหลังสอบเสร็จค่ะ
phuak rao cha pai thale lang sop set kha
We'll go to the seaside after the exams finish. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
ได้ไป can mean that someone got the opportunity or actually managed to go; it is not the automatic past of ไป. A bare past-time phrase plus ไป is enough for a neutral past report.
ไป before a purpose action
In ไป + action, the subject goes somewhere and performs the following action. There is no overt equivalent of English to, and the second verb is not an infinitive form.
พักเที่ยงเราไปกินก๋วยเตี๋ยวกันไหมคะ
phak thiang rao pai kin kuaitiao kan mai kha
Shall we go eat noodles at lunchtime? (ordinary polite invitation, female speaker)
ผมต้องไปส่งพัสดุก่อนร้านปิดครับ
phom tong pai song phatsadu kon ran pit khrap
I have to go send a parcel before the shop closes. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
The purpose can be omitted once it is established. Asked จะไปส่งพัสดุไหม, a speaker can answer ไปครับ. That answer is natural because the activity is recoverable, not because ไป has acquired an invisible object.
ไป after another predicate: away and onward
After a motion verb, ไป supplies outward direction: เดินไป, ขับไป, วิ่งไป. With a carried object, it follows the object in เอา + object + ไป. With ต่อไป, it presents continuation beyond the current stage.
เดินตรงไปจนถึงสี่แยกครับ
doen trong pai chon thueng si yaek khrap
Walk straight on until the intersection. (ordinary polite direction, male speaker)
ช่วยเอากล่องใบนี้ไปไว้ในรถค่ะ
chuai ao klong bai ni pai wai nai rot kha
Please take this box and put it in the car. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; carried object before ไป)
ถึงจะเหนื่อย เราก็ต้องทำต่อไปครับ
thueng cha nueai rao ko tong tham to pai khrap
Even though it's tiring, we have to keep going with the work. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; continuation onward)
There are further grammaticalized extensions. After a property predicate, ไป can mark excess: แพงไป “too expensive.” That construction retains a sense of passing an acceptable point, but it is not literal travel.
ราคานี้แพงไปสำหรับงบของเราค่ะ
rakha ni phaeng pai samrap ngop khong rao kha
This price is too high for our budget. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; degree beyond an acceptable point)
Common collocations
| Collocation | Usual meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|
| ไปทำงาน | go to work | neutral |
| ไปเที่ยว | go out / go traveling | neutral |
| ไปด้วย | go along too | neutral |
| ไปก่อน | go first / leave now | neutral; often conversational |
| ต่อไป | from now on / onward | neutral |
| เอา...ไป | take ... away/to another center | neutral |
ถ้าทุกคนพร้อม เราไปกันเลยครับ
tha thuk khon phrom rao pai kan loei khrap
If everyone's ready, let's go now. (ordinary polite group suggestion, male speaker)
Negation and scope
Use ไม่ไป when the going is denied. ยังไม่ไป means “not going/not gone yet,” while ไปไม่ได้ means that going is impossible or not permitted. The negator's position therefore matters.
คืนนี้ฉันไม่ไปงานเลี้ยงค่ะ
khuen ni chan mai pai ngan liang kha
I'm not going to the party tonight. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
ถนนปิดครับ ตอนนี้ไปสนามบินทางนี้ไม่ได้
thanon pit khrap ton ni pai sanambin thang ni mai dai
The road is closed; you can't get to the airport this way right now. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
พรุ่งนี้คุณจะไปประชุมที่สาขาไหมคะ
phrung ni khun cha pai prachum thi sakha mai kha
Are you going to the meeting at the branch tomorrow? (polite question, female speaker)
ไปครับ ผมจะออกจากบ้านแต่เช้า
pai khrap phom cha ok chak ban tae chao

ฝากเอาแฟ้มนี้ไปด้วยได้ไหมคะ
fak ao faem ni pai duai dai mai kha
Could you take this folder along too? (polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ เดี๋ยวผมเอาไปให้ผู้จัดการ
dai khrap diao phom ao pai hai phu chatkan
Certainly. I'll take it to the manager. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; folder omitted recoverably)
Common Mistakes
1. Choosing ไป for movement toward the speaker
❌ ตอนนี้ผมอยู่หน้าร้าน คุณจะไปไหมครับ
Wrong for the intended invitation toward the male speaker, who says he is already at the shop.
✅ ตอนนี้ผมอยู่หน้าร้าน คุณจะมาที่นี่ไหมครับ
ton ni phom yu na ran khun cha ma thi ni mai khrap
I'm in front of the shop now. Will you come here? (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; movement toward him)
2. Treating the purpose action as an English infinitive
❌ ฉันไปที่จะซื้อยาค่ะ
Incorrect neutral purpose frame—ที่จะ is not required as an infinitive marker.
✅ ฉันไปซื้อยาที่ร้านใกล้บ้านค่ะ
chan pai sue ya thi ran klai ban kha
I'm going to buy medicine at the shop near my house. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
3. Putting ไป before a carried object
❌ ช่วยเอาไปกล่องนี้ครับ
Incorrect neutral disposal order—the object follows เอา before directional ไป.
✅ ช่วยเอากล่องนี้ไปเก็บหลังร้านครับ
chuai ao klong ni pai kep lang ran khrap
Please take this box and store it behind the shop. (ordinary polite request, male speaker)
4. Moving negation after lexical ไป
❌ วันนี้พวกเราไปไม่ตลาดค่ะ
Incorrect—ไม่ precedes the denied motion predicate.
✅ วันนี้พวกเราไม่ไปตลาดค่ะ
wan ni phuak rao mai pai talat kha
We're not going to the market today. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
5. Using ได้ as a mandatory past marker
❌ เมื่อวานผมได้ไปซื้อผักครับ
Misleading for the intended neutral past report—ได้ suggests realization or opportunity, not merely past time.
✅ เมื่อวานผมไปซื้อผักสดที่ตลาดครับ
muea wan phom pai sue phak sot thi talat khrap
Yesterday I went to buy fresh vegetables at the market. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Lexical ไป describes going away from an adopted viewpoint or to a destination.
- Before an action, it commonly builds motion-purpose; after another predicate or object, it can provide outward direction.
- ต่อไป and property + ไป extend the path idea into continuation and excess.
- ไป never conjugates. Time, aspect, negation, scope, and discourse supply the distinctions English builds around go.
