Thai มา is the invariant counterpart of ไป: it construes motion toward an adopted viewpoint. That viewpoint may be the speaker's current location, the listener's location, a destination important in the conversation, or a narrative center. มา also extends beyond literal motion: after a predicate, it can trace an activity or state from an earlier point toward “now” or another reference point.
Lexical มา: motion toward a center
The core frame is mover + มา + destination/source information. A destination is often understood because it is the conversational center. Source is expressed with มาจาก + source. Like ไป, มา can precede a purpose action and follow a manner verb.
| Use | Frame | Natural substitution |
|---|---|---|
| come toward center | mover + มา (+ destination) | เพื่อนมาบ้าน |
| come from a source | mover + มาจาก + source | รถมาจากสนามบิน |
| come in order to act | mover + มา + action | ลูกค้ามารับของ |
| move toward center | manner verb + มา | เดินมา / วิ่งมา |
| bring toward center | เอา + object + มา | เอาเอกสารมา |
เย็นนี้เพื่อนสนิทจะมาบ้านฉันค่ะ
yen ni phuean sanit cha ma ban chan kha
My close friend is coming to my house this evening. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; her home is the destination center)
รถตู้คันนี้มาจากสนามบินครับ
rot tu khan ni ma chak sanambin khrap
This van comes from the airport. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; source with จาก)
ลูกค้ามารับเครื่องที่ซ่อมไว้ค่ะ
luk kha ma rap khrueang thi som wai kha
The customer has come to collect the repaired device. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; motion plus purpose)
English come usually points toward the speaker or listener, but Thai can adopt another salient center in a story. This is a viewpoint choice, not a permanent property of a place. See Motion with ไป and มา for the full deictic comparison.
An invariant-form matrix
มา remains identical with every subject and time reference. Words around it contribute time, aspect, and polarity.
| Environment | Thai pattern | Interpretation source |
|---|---|---|
| past context | เมื่อเช้าผมมาสำนักงาน | เมื่อเช้า |
| motion in progress | ฉันกำลังมารับคุณ | กำลัง |
| arrival completed | เขามาถึงแล้ว | ถึง and แล้ว |
| prospective | พวกเราจะมาพรุ่งนี้ | จะ and พรุ่งนี้ |
| negative | วันนี้เขาไม่มา | ไม่ before มา |
เมื่อเช้าผมมาสำนักงานก่อนแปดโมงครับ
muea chao phom ma samnakngan kon paet mong khrap
I came to the office before eight this morning. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
ฉันกำลังมารับคุณที่หน้าโรงแรมค่ะ
chan kamlang ma rap khun thi na rongraem kha
I'm on my way to pick you up in front of the hotel. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; movement toward the addressee)
เขามาถึงห้องประชุมแล้วครับ
khao ma thueng hong prachum laeo khrap
He has arrived at the meeting room. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
พวกเราจะมาอีกครั้งวันศุกร์ค่ะ
phuak rao cha ma ik khrang wan suk kha
We'll come again on Friday. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
ได้มา can present an achieved opportunity to come or receive something, depending on the frame. It is not a routine past-tense form of มา. A past time expression alone can locate the unchanged verb.
Purpose, direction, and bringing
Before an action, มา packages motion and purpose: มาคุย, มารับ, มาช่วย. After a motion manner verb, it adds direction toward the center: เดินมา, ขับมา. With a transferred object, the object normally follows เอา before มา.
พนักงานเดินมาถามว่าต้องการอะไรไหมครับ
phanak ngan doen ma tham wa tongkan arai mai khrap
An employee walked over and asked whether I needed anything. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; manner plus toward-direction)
ช่วยเอาใบสมัครที่พิมพ์แล้วมาด้วยนะคะ
chuai ao bai samak thi phim laeo ma duai na kha
Please bring the printed application too. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
คุณหมอมาตรวจคนไข้ช่วงบ่ายครับ
khun mo ma truat khon khai chuang bai khrap
The doctor comes to examine patients in the afternoon. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; motion plus purpose)
The adjacent actions are not infinitives. In มาตรวจ, both มา and ตรวจ are unchanged Thai predicates whose order mirrors motion followed by purpose.
Continuative มา: from then toward the reference point
After an activity or state, มา can trace its continuation from the past toward now: ทำงานที่นี่มาสามปีแล้ว. A duration commonly precedes แล้ว. The construction does not make มา a simple past marker; it creates a path through time with current relevance.
ผมทำงานกับทีมนี้มาสี่ปีแล้วครับ
phom tham ngan kap thim ni ma si pi laeo khrap
I've worked with this team for four years. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; interval extending to now)
เธอเรียนภาษาไทยมาตั้งแต่เดือนมกราคมค่ะ
thoe rian phasa thai ma tangtae duean mokkarakhom kha
She has studied Thai since January. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; starting point through the present)
ที่ผ่านมา ร้านปิดทุกวันจันทร์ครับ
thi phan ma ran pit thuk wan chan khrap
Up to now / in the past period, the shop has closed every Monday. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; fixed temporal expression ที่ผ่านมา)
The interval may also extend toward a past narrative point if that point is established. Thus มา is viewpoint-sensitive rather than inherently “present perfect.” The dedicated continuative มา page treats those temporal readings in detail.
Common collocations
| Collocation | Usual meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|
| มาถึง | arrive / come as far as | neutral |
| มาจาก | come from | neutral |
| มาหา | come to see | neutral |
| มาด้วย | come along too / bring along | neutral, context-dependent |
| เอา...มา | bring ... toward the center | neutral |
| ตั้งแต่...มา | ever since... | neutral |
Negation and recoverable omission
Use ไม่มา to deny coming, ยังไม่มา when an expected arrival has not occurred, มาไม่ได้ for inability, and ไม่ได้มา to deny that the visit occurred. These are scope contrasts, not conjugations.
รถรับส่งยังไม่มาค่ะ รออีกประมาณสิบนาที
rot rap song yang mai ma kha ro ik praman sip nathi
The shuttle hasn't arrived yet; please wait about ten more minutes. (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker)
วันนี้ผมมาไม่ได้ครับ ต้องพาแม่ไปหาหมอ
wan ni phom ma mai dai khrap tong pha mae pai ha mo
I can't come today; I have to take my mother to the doctor. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
Asked พรุ่งนี้จะมาประชุมไหม, มาค่ะ is complete because both destination and purpose are recoverable. When the listener cannot infer them, say where and why.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
พรุ่งนี้คุณจะมาที่สาขากี่โมงคะ
phrung ni khun cha ma thi sakha ki mong kha
What time will you come to the branch tomorrow? (polite question, female speaker at or aligned with the branch)
ผมจะมาถึงประมาณเก้าโมงครับ
phom cha ma thueng praman kao mong khrap
I'll arrive at about nine. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
เอาสัญญาฉบับจริงมาด้วยได้ไหมคะ
ao sanya chabap ching ma duai dai mai kha
Could you bring the original contract too? (polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ ผมเตรียมไว้แล้ว
dai khrap phom triam wai laeo
Certainly. I've already prepared it. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Choosing มา for motion away from the speaker
❌ ตอนนี้ฉันอยู่บ้าน เดี๋ยวจะมาตลาดค่ะ
Wrong for the intended trip away from the speaker's home to the market.
✅ ตอนนี้ฉันอยู่บ้าน เดี๋ยวจะไปตลาดค่ะ
ton ni chan yu ban diao cha pai talat kha
I'm at home now; I'll go to the market shortly. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Reversing มาจาก in an ordinary origin frame
❌ รถคันนี้จากสนามบินมาครับ
Awkward as a neutral answer to ‘Where did this van come from?’; use the established มาจาก frame.
✅ รถคันนี้มาจากโรงแรมใกล้สนามบินครับ
rot khan ni ma chak rongraem klai sanambin khrap
This van came from the hotel near the airport. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Inserting an English infinitive marker
❌ ลูกค้ามาที่จะรับของค่ะ
Incorrect neutral purpose frame—มา and รับ occur adjacently without an infinitive marker.
✅ ลูกค้ามารับพัสดุที่เคาน์เตอร์ค่ะ
luk kha ma rap phatsadu thi khaotoe kha
The customer has come to collect a parcel at the counter. (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker)
4. Putting มา before the carried object
❌ ช่วยเอามาแฟ้มสีแดงครับ
Incorrect neutral order—the object follows เอา before directional มา.
✅ ช่วยเอาแฟ้มสีแดงมาที่โต๊ะผมครับ
chuai ao faem si daeng ma thi to phom khrap
Please bring the red folder to my desk. (ordinary polite request, male speaker)
5. Moving negation after lexical มา
❌ วันนี้เธอมาไม่ค่ะ
Incorrect—ไม่ precedes มา when the coming event is denied.
✅ วันนี้เธอไม่มาทำงานค่ะ
wan ni thoe mai ma tham ngan kha
She isn't coming to work today. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Lexical มา describes motion toward an adopted conversational or narrative center.
- มา + action packages arrival and purpose; manner + มา and เอา + object + มา add toward-direction.
- Post-predicate มา can trace a situation from an earlier point toward the reference point.
- มา never conjugates. Time expressions, aspect markers, negation, and context produce the English interpretations.
