Thai มา starts with a concrete path toward a deictic center: “come.” The same viewpoint can organize time and discourse. A situation may extend toward the active reference point, or an event may emerge into the scene or the speaker's awareness, especially in combinations such as ขึ้นมา and เข้ามา.
English translations range from come and bring to have been doing or suddenly began. None is a conjugation of the Thai verb. The common thread is a path whose endpoint is “here,” “now,” “then,” or the current center of attention.
Literal motion toward a center
In a serial predicate, มา follows a manner-of-motion or handling predicate and directs its path toward the active center.
| Productive frame | Viewpoint | Model |
|---|---|---|
| มา + destination/purpose | come to the center or come in order to act | มาสำนักงาน / มาคุย |
| motion + มา | move toward the center | เดินเข้ามา |
| เอา + object + มา | bring the object toward the center | เอาเอกสารมา |
| event/state + มา + duration + แล้ว | extend from earlier time to a reference point | รอมาสองชั่วโมงแล้ว |
| event + ขึ้นมา | emerge or begin within the scene | พูดขึ้นมา |
| event + เข้ามา | enter a physical or discourse domain | มีปัญหาเข้ามา |
พอฉันเปิดประตู แมวก็วิ่งเข้ามาค่ะ
pho chan poet pratu maeo ko wing khao ma kha
As soon as I opened the door, the cat ran in toward me. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; literal inward motion)
พรุ่งนี้ช่วยเอาสัญญาฉบับจริงมาด้วยครับ
phrung ni chuai ao sanya chabap ching ma duai khrap
Tomorrow, please bring the original contract with you. (ordinary polite request, male speaker; transfer toward the meeting center)
The center can be a place the speaker is not currently occupying. On the phone, an employee at home can say พรุ่งนี้เอาเอกสารมาที่สำนักงาน because tomorrow's office is the projected center. Deixis follows the construed scene, not simply the speaker's physical coordinates.
A situation extending to the reference point
The frame event/state + มา + duration + แล้ว looks backward along a path that reaches the active reference point. At speech time, English often uses a present perfect or present perfect progressive, but the Thai construction is not tied permanently to the present.
ฉันทำงานกับทีมนี้มาสามปีแล้วค่ะ
chan tham ngan kap thim ni ma sam pi laeo kha
I've worked with this team for three years. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; span reaching now)
ลูกค้ารอสายมาสิบห้านาทีแล้วครับ
luk kha ro sai ma sip ha nathi laeo khrap
The customer has been on hold for fifteen minutes. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; continuing span to now)
ตอนที่ย้ายกลับกรุงเทพฯ เขาอยู่เชียงใหม่มาหกปีแล้วค่ะ
ton thi yai klap krung thep khao yu chiang mai ma hok pi laeo kha
When she moved back to Bangkok, she had lived in Chiang Mai for six years. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; span reaching a past reference point)
In the third example, ตอนย้ายกลับกรุงเทพฯ sets the endpoint in the past. English chooses had lived, but มา still contributes an approach to that contextual endpoint. For further duration patterns, see Continuative มา.
Starting point, duration, and uninterruptedness
มา can combine with different expressions after the predicate:
| Frame | What it measures | Model |
|---|---|---|
| event + มา + duration + แล้ว | amount of time reaching the reference point | เรียนมาหกเดือนแล้ว |
| event + มา + ตั้งแต่ + start | explicit starting boundary | รอมาตั้งแต่เช้า |
| event + มา + ตลอด | continuity throughout the relevant span | ช่วยมาตลอด |
| event + มา + เรื่อย ๆ | steady continuation or recurrence toward the reference point | ฝึกมาเรื่อย ๆ |
ทีมช่างตรวจระบบมาตั้งแต่เช้าครับ
thim chang truat rabop ma tangtae chao khrap
The technical team has been checking the system since morning. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)
พี่สาวช่วยดูแลร้านนี้มาตลอดค่ะ
phi sao chuai dulae ran ni ma talot kha
My older sister has helped take care of this shop all along. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
ผมฝึกฟังข่าวไทยมาเรื่อย ๆ ครับ
phom fuek fang khao thai ma rueai rueai khrap
I've kept practicing listening to Thai news. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; steady development to now)
ตลอด claims continuity over the relevant interval; เรื่อย ๆ presents an unbroken or recurring path without necessarily claiming that the activity occurred every second. This is a genuine semantic difference, not stylistic padding.
Emergence with ขึ้นมา and เข้ามา
Bare มา does not mean “begin” by itself. Emergent readings normally come from a larger directional-resultative combination. ขึ้นมา presents an event, idea, voice, or problem as arising into the scene; เข้ามา presents something as entering a domain.
อยู่ ๆ เด็กก็ร้องไห้ขึ้นมาค่ะ
yu yu dek ko rong hai khuen ma kha
Suddenly the child burst into tears. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; event emerges into the scene)
ระหว่างประชุม เขาพูดเรื่องงบประมาณขึ้นมาครับ
rawang prachum khao phut rueang ngoppraman khuen ma khrap
During the meeting, he brought up the budget. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; topic emerges into attention)
สัปดาห์นี้มีคำร้องใหม่เข้ามาหลายเรื่องค่ะ
sapda ni mi kham rong mai khao ma lai rueang kha
Several new requests have come in this week. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; entries into an institutional domain)
Here ขึ้น and เข้า contribute emergence or entry, while มา orients that path toward the viewpoint center. Compare simple เขาพูดเรื่องงบประมาณ “he talked about the budget,” which reports the content without presenting it as newly raised.
Interaction with แล้ว and อยู่
In the continuative frame, มา traces the span and แล้ว marks its attained extent or current relevance. อยู่ can separately say that the resulting activity or state remains in progress.
เราเช่าห้องนี้มาหนึ่งปีแล้ว และตอนนี้ก็ยังอยู่ที่นี่ค่ะ
rao chao hong ni ma nueng pi laeo lae ton ni ko yang yu thi ni kha
We've rented this room for a year, and we're still living here now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
ตอนโทรไป เขารอหน้าคลินิกมาครึ่งชั่วโมงแล้วครับ
ton tho pai khao ro na khlinik ma khrueng chua mong laeo khrap
When I called, he had already been waiting in front of the clinic for half an hour. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; span reaching a past endpoint)
เสียงจากห้องข้าง ๆ ดังขึ้นมาแล้วก็เงียบไปค่ะ
siang chak hong khang khang dang khuen ma laeo ko ngiap pai kha
A sound rose from the next room and then faded away. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; emergence followed by departure from the scene)
The last example makes the deictic opposition visible: ขึ้นมา brings the sound into awareness; เงียบไป moves the situation away from that active state. แล้ว sequences the two developments here; it is not simply a past marker.
มา and ไป as opposing temporal paths
ที่ผ่านมาเราลดค่าใช้จ่ายมาตลอดครับ
thi phan ma rao lot kha chai chai ma talot khrap
Up to now, we've consistently reduced expenses. (formal-neutral workplace report, male speaker; path toward the present)
จากนี้ไปเราจะติดตามค่าใช้จ่ายทุกสัปดาห์ค่ะ
chak ni pai rao cha tittam kha chai chai thuk sapda kha
From now on, we'll monitor expenses every week. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; path onward from the present)
มา looks back along a path arriving at the reference point; ไป projects or traces a path away from it. This opposition explains more than labels such as “perfect” and “future,” because both forms can be anchored to past, present, or projected scenes.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
คุณรอสัมภาษณ์มานานหรือยังคะ
khun ro samphat ma nan rue yang kha
Have you been waiting long for the interview? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ประมาณยี่สิบนาทีแล้วครับ
praman yi sip nathi laeo khrap
About twenty minutes. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; recoverable predicate)
มีเจ้าหน้าที่ออกมาเรียกชื่อหรือยังคะ
mi chao nathi ok ma riak chue rue yang kha
Has an officer come out to call any names yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; motion toward the waiting area)
ยังครับ แต่มีคนเดินเข้ามาเพิ่มเรื่อย ๆ
yang khrap tae mi khon doen khao ma phoem rueai rueai
Not yet, but more people keep coming in. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; repeated entry into the scene)
Common Mistakes
1. Treating continuative มา as present-perfect tense
❌ ตอนนั้นเขามาสองปีอยู่ที่นี่แล้วค่ะ
Incorrect English-like ordering—the predicate precedes มา and its following duration.
✅ ตอนนั้นเขาอยู่ที่นี่มาสองปีแล้วค่ะ
ton nan khao yu thi ni ma song pi laeo kha
At that point, she had lived here for two years. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Reversing the direction of transfer
❌ พรุ่งนี้ช่วยเอาแฟ้มไปให้ฉันที่โต๊ะค่ะ
Wrong if the folder is to move toward the speaker at her desk; ไป directs it away from the active center.
✅ พรุ่งนี้ช่วยเอาแฟ้มมาให้ฉันที่โต๊ะค่ะ
phrung ni chuai ao faem ma hai chan thi to kha
Tomorrow, please bring the folder to me at my desk. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
3. Using bare มา as a generic progressive marker
❌ ตอนนี้ฉันอ่านรายงานมาค่ะ
Incorrect for simple ‘I am reading’; bare มา does not mark an event as currently in progress.
✅ ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังอ่านรายงานอยู่ค่ะ
ton ni chan kamlang an raingan yu kha
I'm reading the report now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Omitting the change element in an emergence reading
❌ อยู่ ๆ เขาก็พูดเรื่องนี้มาครับ
Unnatural for ‘he suddenly brought this up’; the emergence construction uses ขึ้นมา.
✅ อยู่ ๆ เขาก็พูดเรื่องนี้ขึ้นมาครับ
yu yu khao ko phut rueang ni khuen ma khrap
Suddenly he brought this up. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
5. Copying English for + duration before the predicate
❌ สามปีฉันทำงานที่นี่มาแล้วค่ะ
Awkward neutral order for measuring the span; the duration follows มา.
✅ ฉันทำงานที่นี่มาสามปีแล้วค่ะ
chan tham ngan thi ni ma sam pi laeo kha
I've worked here for three years. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- มา profiles a path toward a discourse center, which may be spatial, temporal, or attentional.
- event/state + มา + duration + แล้ว traces a span toward the active reference point, including a past one.
- Emergence normally uses a larger construction such as ขึ้นมา or เข้ามา; bare มา is not “begin.”
- แล้ว marks attained extent or relevance, while อยู่ can present internal continuation.
- The มา/ไป opposition explains viewpoint more accurately than assigning either particle one English tense.
