มา as Continuative Viewpoint

Thai มา is a lexical motion verb meaning “come,” but after an activity or state it can trace that situation forward from an earlier point toward a reference point: ทำงานที่นี่มาสามปีแล้ว “have worked here for three years.” This continuative มา creates a metaphorical path through time. It is not a present-perfect suffix, and it does not by itself guarantee that the situation continues after the reference point.

Position and meaning distinguish the continuative use from directional motion. เขามาทำงาน packages coming plus its purpose, “he came to work”; เขาทำงานมาสามปี traces three years of working up to the relevant point.

The productive continuative frame

A frequent frame is subject/topic + situation + มา + duration/source + แล้ว. A ตั้งแต่... phrase can name the starting point, while ตลอด can emphasize continuity across an interval.

ฉันเรียนภาษาไทยมาตั้งแต่เดือนมิถุนายนค่ะ

chan rian phasa thai ma tangtae duean mithunayon kha

I've been studying Thai since June. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; starting point traced toward now)

ผมดูแลร้านสาขานี้มาห้าปีแล้วครับ

phom dulae ran sakha ni ma ha pi laeo khrap

I've managed this branch for five years. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; attained duration with current relevance)

เรารอคำตอบมาครึ่งชั่วโมงแล้วค่ะ

rao ro kham top ma khrueng chua mong laeo kha

We've been waiting for an answer for half an hour. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

The situation phrase remains before มา. Its object and complements stay with it: ดูแลร้านสาขานี้ + มา, not ดูแลมา + ร้านสาขานี้ for this meaning. A discourse-recoverable object can be omitted, but not randomly rearranged.

💡
Read continuative มา as a path whose endpoint is the reference time. The situation lies before มา; the duration or starting point commonly follows it.

Lexical “come” versus a path through time

Lexical มา contributes real or discourse-centered direction. Continuative มา contributes temporal orientation. Surface order provides a strong clue, but lexical meaning and surrounding phrases decide the analysis.

ช่างมาซ่อมเครื่องปรับอากาศเมื่อเช้าครับ

chang ma som khrueang prap akat muea chao khrap

The technician came to repair the air conditioner this morning. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; lexical motion plus purpose)

ช่างซ่อมเครื่องนี้มาตั้งแต่เช้าแล้วค่ะ

chang som khrueang ni ma tangtae chao laeo kha

The technician has been repairing this machine since this morning. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; continuative viewpoint)

เขาเดินมาจากสถานีครับ

khao doen ma chak sathani khrap

He walked here from the station. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; directional มา)

เขาฝึกเดินทุกวันมาสองเดือนแล้วครับ

khao fuek doen thuk wan ma song duean laeo khrap

He has practiced walking every day for two months. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; repeated activity extending to now)

The phrase เดินมาสองกิโลเมตร can mean “walk two kilometers toward here,” because distance measures a path of motion. ฝึกเดินทุกวันมาสองเดือน instead has a temporal duration and a repeated practice situation. There is no universal punctuation or English auxiliary that resolves such cases; speakers use compatible nouns, time phrases, and context.

The lexical reference for มา develops viewpoint-centered motion and carrying chains. This page concentrates on the continuative extension.

What kinds of situations continue?

Activities, habits, repeated events, and states readily provide temporal extent: working, waiting, studying, living somewhere, caring for someone, or not seeing a person. A single instantaneous event normally cannot stretch through a duration unless it is reinterpreted as repeated or as producing a continuing state.

คุณยายอยู่กับครอบครัวเรามานานมากแล้วค่ะ

khun yai yu kap khropkhrua rao ma nan mak laeo kha

Grandmother has lived with our family for a very long time. (ordinary respectful family speech, female speaker)

ช่วงสามเดือนที่ผ่านมา บริษัทไม่พบปัญหาแบบนี้เลยครับ

chuang sam duean thi phan ma borisat mai phop panha baep ni loei khrap

Over the past three months, the company has not encountered this kind of problem at all. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

In ที่ผ่านมา, มา belongs to the lexicalized expression “that has passed/up to now,” while the whole time phrase anchors the negative event. A simpler continuative form is บริษัทไม่พบปัญหาแบบนี้มาสามเดือนแล้ว. Negative situations can extend just as affirmative ones do.

💡
Do not force continuative มา onto a punctual event merely to imitate English have. First ask whether the Thai situation can form an interval—continuous, repeated, habitual, or maintained as a state.

แล้ว and อยู่ contribute different viewpoints

Final แล้ว commonly presents the measured span as attained and currently relevant: ทำงานมาห้าปีแล้ว. It does not supply the continuation by itself. Without แล้ว, a starting-point phrase or discourse can still establish the path: เรียนมาตั้งแต่เด็ก “have studied since childhood.”

Postpredicate อยู่ instead holds a situation at the reference time. Compare:

ตอนนี้พ่อพักอยู่ที่บ้านครับ

ton ni pho phak yu thi ban khrap

Dad is resting at home now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; state held at the current reference time)

พ่อพักฟื้นอยู่ที่บ้านมาสองสัปดาห์แล้วครับ

pho phak fuen yu thi ban ma song sapda laeo khrap

Dad has been recuperating at home for two weeks. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; continuing situation plus attained duration)

The second target contains lexical/location-supporting อยู่ inside the situation พักฟื้นอยู่ที่บ้าน, then continuative มา traces that entire situation. Learners should not generate long stacks by adding English labels. Each element must contribute a coherent scope.

Past and projected reference points

Continuative มา is not tied to speech time. A narrative can measure a span up to a past point, and a projected clause can measure a span that will be attained later.

ตอนย้ายแผนก ผมทำงานกับทีมเดิมมาสองปีแล้วครับ

ton yai phanaek phom tham ngan kap thim doem ma song pi laeo khrap

When I changed departments, I had worked with the old team for two years. (ordinary polite past narrative, male speaker)

ถึงสิ้นปีนี้ ฉันจะทำงานที่นี่มาครบสามปีค่ะ

thueng sin pi ni chan cha tham ngan thi ni ma khrop sam pi kha

By the end of this year, I will have worked here for a full three years. (ordinary polite projection, female speaker)

English changes between had worked and will have worked. Thai มา is unchanged; the past clause and ถึงสิ้นปีนี้ establish the two reference points. จะ belongs to the projected event, not to an inflected form of มา.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

คุณทำงานกับบริษัทนี้มานานหรือยังคะ

khun tham ngan kap borisat ni ma nan rue yang kha

Have you been working with this company long? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

เกือบสี่ปีแล้วครับ เริ่มงานหลังเรียนจบไม่นาน

kueap si pi laeo khrap roem ngan lang rian chop mai nan

Almost four years. I started not long after graduating. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; repeated subject omitted)

แล้วดูแลโครงการนี้มาตลอดเลยหรือคะ

laeo dulae khrongkan ni ma talot loei rue kha

And have you been responsible for this project the whole time? (ordinary polite follow-up, female speaker)

ครับ แต่ปีหน้าจะส่งต่อให้ทีมใหม่

khrap tae pi na cha song to hai thim mai

Yes, but next year I'll hand it over to the new team. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Putting continuative มา before the situation

❌ ฉันมาตั้งแต่เดือนมิถุนายนเรียนภาษาไทยค่ะ

Incorrect for the continuative meaning—the studied situation must precede มา.

✅ ฉันเรียนภาษาไทยมาหกเดือนแล้วค่ะ

chan rian phasa thai ma hok duean laeo kha

I've been studying Thai for six months. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Using continuative order for lexical origin

❌ ผมอยู่มาจากกรุงเทพฯครับ

Incorrect for ‘I come from Bangkok’—อยู่ creates a residence predicate, while lexical origin uses มาจาก.

✅ ผมมาจากกรุงเทพฯครับ

phom ma chak krung thep khrap

I come from Bangkok. (ordinary polite introduction, male speaker; lexical origin)

3. Using English auxiliary negation order

❌ เราทำงานไม่มาสามวันแล้วครับ

Incorrect for ‘we haven't worked for three days’—ไม่ belongs before the denied work situation.

✅ เราไม่ได้ทำงานมาสามวันแล้วครับ เพราะระบบปิด

rao mai dai tham ngan ma sam wan laeo khrap phro rabop pit

We haven't worked for three days because the system has been down. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)

4. Assuming the situation must extend through speech time

❌ เธอย้ายบ้านเมื่อเดือนก่อน และอยู่ที่เดิมมาหกปีแล้วค่ะ

Misleading if the six-year residence ended at the move—without a past anchor, แล้ว normally relates the span to the current discourse point.

✅ ก่อนย้ายบ้าน เธออยู่ที่เดิมมาหกปีแล้วค่ะ

kon yai ban thoe yu thi doem ma hok pi laeo kha

Before moving, she had lived at the old place for six years. (ordinary polite past narrative, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Post-situation มา traces an activity or state from an earlier point toward a reference point.
  • Directional มา describes motion toward a center; continuative มา constructs a path through time.
  • Duration, ตั้งแต่, ตลอด, event type, and word order help identify the continuative reading.
  • แล้ว presents the span as attained/currently relevant; it is not required when another expression supplies the path.
  • Past and future English perfect translations reflect the chosen reference time, not conjugation of the Thai predicate.
