Postverbal แล้ว and Event Completion

After a dynamic event phrase, แล้ว presents that event as attained before a relevant reference point. With a bounded task, this usually gives a completion reading: ส่งเอกสารแล้ว “have sent the documents.” The result matters now or at the reference time—perhaps the recipient can check the file, the speaker can move to the next task, or a question has been resolved.

Calling แล้ว a “past-tense word” misses its central logic. It can relate an event to a past narrative point, to the present, or even to a later stage in a future sequence. Its contribution is anteriority and relevance; the event phrase and context determine how strongly actual endpoint completion is understood.

แล้ว follows the complete event phrase

The productive pattern is subject/topic + [event phrase] + แล้ว (+ final particle). Objects, quantities, and result expressions normally remain with the event before แล้ว.

Productive slotSubstitutionNatural resultLikely interpretation

chan song bai samak thang wepsai laeo kha

I've submitted the application through the website. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; attained event with current relevance)

ผมจ่ายค่าเช่าเดือนนี้แล้วครับ

phom chai kha chao duean ni laeo khrap

I've paid this month's rent. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; payment task complete)

รถรับส่งถึงสนามบินแล้วค่ะ

rot rap song thueng sanambin laeo kha

The shuttle has reached the airport. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; arrival point attained)

The marker comes after the event unit, not after the first verb by English auxiliary logic. ส่งใบสมัครทางเว็บไซต์ is one predicate phrase; แล้ว scopes over the submission as a whole.

💡
Before แล้ว, identify the largest event unit whose attainment matters. Keep its object, result, and close complements together: ทำรายงานเสร็จแล้ว, not ทำแล้วรายงานเสร็จ.

Completion comes from แล้ว plus the event shape

With an achievement such as ถึงสถานี “reach the station” or an explicit result such as ทำเสร็จ “finish doing,” the endpoint is built into the predicate. แล้ว locates that attained result relative to the reference point. With an open-ended activity, แล้ว may say that some contextually sufficient phase has occurred without claiming every conceivable endpoint.

ผมอ่านเอกสารไปบ้างแล้วครับ แต่ยังอ่านไม่จบ

phom an ekkasan pai bang laeo khrap tae yang an mai chop

I've read some of the documents, but I haven't finished reading them. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; prior activity without total completion)

แม่เตรียมอาหารเสร็จแล้วค่ะ มากินได้เลย

mae triam ahan set laeo kha ma kin dai loei

Mum has finished preparing the food; come and eat. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; เสร็จ makes the endpoint explicit)

เด็กกินขนมหมดแล้วครับ

dek kin khanom mot laeo khrap

The child has eaten all the sweets. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; หมด supplies exhaustive completion)

This is a genuinely difficult point: some descriptions call แล้ว “perfective,” others “perfect/anterior,” and natural uses do not all entail that the lexical goal was exhausted. For learning, use this dependable distinction: แล้ว says a relevant event phase is attained; เสร็จ, หมด, result predicates, quantities, and context specify the endpoint. Do not ask one particle to do all of those jobs.

The pages on เสร็จ and หมด develop lexical completion and exhaustiveness.

The reference point may be past, present, or future

In an ordinary update, the reference point is often now, producing an English present perfect. In a narrative, แล้ว can present an event as already attained at an earlier point. Inside a future sequence, it can mark the prerequisite stage that will precede another future event.

ตอนผมไปถึง ร้านปิดแล้วครับ

ton phom pai thueng ran pit laeo khrap

When I arrived, the shop had already closed. (ordinary polite narrative, male speaker; anterior to a past reference point)

พอตรวจสัญญาเสร็จแล้ว ฉันจะส่งกลับให้ค่ะ

pho truat sanya set laeo chan cha song klap hai kha

Once I've finished checking the contract, I'll send it back. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; completion belongs to a future sequence)

เมื่อคืนพอฝนหยุดแล้ว เราก็ออกเดินทางครับ

muea khuen pho fon yut laeo rao ko ok doen thang khrap

Last night, once the rain had stopped, we set out. (ordinary polite narrative, male speaker; ordered past stages)

The future-sequence example proves that แล้ว is not a past-tense inflection. It orders the checking before the sending relative to a projected reference point.

💡
Ask “attained before which reference point?” rather than “is this past?” That question handles ส่งแล้ว now, ปิดแล้ว at a past arrival, and เสร็จแล้วจะส่ง in a future plan.

The minimal contrast with an ongoing view

Compare the same bounded task:

คุณเมย์กำลังตรวจสัญญาอยู่ค่ะ

khun me kamlang truat sanya yu kha

Khun May is checking the contract. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; viewpoint inside the task)

คุณเมย์ตรวจสัญญาแล้วค่ะ

khun me truat sanya laeo kha

Khun May has checked the contract. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; checking presented as attained)

The first brackets an unfolding event. The second places the checking before the relevant point and normally licenses the next step. The verb ตรวจ remains unchanged; particles and context change the viewpoint.

The string กำลังตรวจอยู่แล้ว does not combine “progressive” and “completed.” With a suitable contrast, it means the checking was already under way: แล้ว scopes over the established ongoing situation. If completion is intended, end the progressive frame and use an endpoint predicate: ตรวจเสร็จแล้ว.

ตอนคุณโทรมา ผมกำลังตรวจเอกสารอยู่แล้วครับ

ton khun tho ma phom kamlang truat ekkasan yu laeo khrap

When you called, I was already checking the documents. (ordinary polite narrative, male speaker; แล้ว scopes over an ongoing situation, not a completed one)

💡
Never calculate a stack by adding English labels. In กำลังตรวจอยู่แล้ว, แล้ว means the ongoing situation was already established; in ตรวจเสร็จแล้ว, เสร็จ supplies completion.

Postverbal completion and sentence-final change overlap

With a short dynamic clause such as เขากินแล้ว, แล้ว is both after the verb phrase and near the end of the clause. A completion/anterior reading and a new-current-situation reading naturally converge: the eating occurred, so “has he eaten?” is settled now.

The distinction becomes clearer with statives and negation. หิวแล้ว means “hungry now” after not being hungry; ไม่หิวแล้ว means “not hungry anymore.” Those clauses do not report completed acts of hungering. Sentence-final แล้ว has scope over a changed proposition, the focus of the change-of-state page.

Therefore, do not imagine two unrelated words separated by punctuation. These are related uses whose preferred interpretation depends on event type, position, and discourse scope.

Questions and negative answers

A common completion question is event + แล้วหรือยัง “has ... happened yet?” A positive answer uses แล้ว; a negative answer normally uses ยังไม่ได้ + event or ยังไม่ + event, depending on the predicate and intended scope.

ฝ่ายบัญชีโอนเงินแล้วหรือยังคะ

fai banchi on ngoen laeo rue yang kha

Has accounting transferred the money yet? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

ยังไม่ได้โอนครับ กำลังตรวจเลขบัญชี

yang mai dai on khrap kamlang truat lek banchi

Not yet. They're checking the account number. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Plain ไม่ได้โอน denies that a transfer occurred. ไม่โอนแล้ว instead means that someone will no longer transfer or has changed the plan not to transfer; that is a clause-level change reading, not the negative of completed แล้ว.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ส่งเอกสารให้ลูกค้าแล้วหรือยังคะ

song ekkasan hai luk kha laeo rue yang kha

Have you sent the documents to the customer yet? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

ส่งแล้วครับ เมื่อกี้ลูกค้าตอบรับมาแล้ว

song laeo khrap muea ki luk kha top rap ma laeo

Yes. The customer acknowledged them a moment ago. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; omitted object is recoverable)

งั้นฉันเริ่มทำขั้นต่อไปเลยนะคะ

ngan chan roem tham khan to pai loei na kha

Then I'll start the next step now. (ordinary polite response, female speaker; current relevance of completion)

ได้ครับ ถ้ามีปัญหาบอกผมได้เลย

dai khrap tha mi panha bok phom dai loei

Certainly. If there's a problem, let me know. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Placing แล้ว before the object

❌ ผมส่งแล้วใบเสร็จครับ

Incorrect neutral order—ใบเสร็จ belongs inside the completed event phrase before แล้ว.

✅ ผมส่งใบเสร็จให้ฝ่ายบัญชีแล้วครับ

phom song bai set hai fai banchi laeo khrap

I've sent the receipt to accounting. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)

2. Adding แล้ว to every past event

❌ เมื่อวานฉันไปแล้วธนาคารค่ะ

Incorrect order and analysis—เมื่อวาน can anchor a bare past event; แล้ว is not obligatory past tense.

✅ เมื่อวานฉันไปธนาคารค่ะ

muea wan chan pai thanakhan kha

Yesterday I went to the bank. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; past time supplied by เมื่อวาน)

3. Assuming แล้ว guarantees an intrinsic endpoint

❌ อ่านเอกสารแล้วแปลว่าอ่านจบทุกหน้าครับ

Incorrect claim—แล้ว presents a contextually attained event; total completion may require จบ, หมด, a quantity, or context.

✅ ผมอ่านไปสิบหน้าแล้วครับ แต่ยังไม่จบ

phom an pai sip na laeo khrap tae yang mai chop

I've read ten pages, but I haven't finished. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; bounded progress without final completion)

4. Using แล้ว to deny completion

❌ รายงานแล้วไม่เสร็จค่ะ

Incorrect for ‘the report isn't finished yet’; the negative and expected endpoint need ยังไม่.

✅ รายงานยังไม่เสร็จค่ะ ขอเวลาอีกหนึ่งชั่วโมง

raingan yang mai set kha kho wela ik nueng chua mong

The report isn't finished yet; please give me another hour. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • [event phrase] + แล้ว presents a relevant event as attained before a reference point.
  • Bounded predicates and explicit เสร็จ, หมด, results, or quantities determine how strong the endpoint reading is.
  • แล้ว can be anterior to a past, present, or future reference point; it is not a past-tense ending.
  • Ongoing กำลัง...อยู่ and attained ...แล้ว contrast in viewpoint, but an outer แล้ว may mean an ongoing situation was already established.
  • Dynamic completion and clause-level change often overlap in short clauses; event type and scope decide the interpretation.
