Thai เสร็จ is a lexical predicate meaning that a task or process reaches completion. In เขียนรายงานเสร็จ, writing reaches its task endpoint; in รายงานเสร็จแล้ว, the report is now complete. เสร็จ remains unchanged and does more semantic work than a generic tense or perfect marker.
The closest English translations—finish, be finished, done—hide an important Thai contrast. แล้ว relates an event or change to a reference point, while เสร็จ names completion itself. A speaker can therefore combine them without redundancy: เขียนเสร็จแล้ว says that writing is complete and that this result is now relevant.
The task reaches its endpoint
The productive pattern is action + object/complements + เสร็จ. The action phrase stays intact before the completion predicate. If the task is already topical, Thai can omit it and answer simply เสร็จแล้วครับ.
| Action slot | Completion frame | What reaches an endpoint |
|---|---|---|
| เขียนรายงาน | เขียนรายงานเสร็จแล้ว | report-writing task |
| ตรวจห้อง | ตรวจห้องเสร็จตอนบ่าย | inspection process |
| กินข้าว | พอกินข้าวเสร็จก็ออกไป | meal activity |
| ประชุม | ประชุมเสร็จแล้วโทรมา | meeting activity |
| งาน | งานยังไม่เสร็จ | task as completed product |
ผมเขียนรายงานเสร็จแล้วครับ กำลังตรวจตัวเลขอีกรอบ
phom khian raingan set laeo khrap kamlang truat tua lek ik rop
I've finished writing the report and am checking the figures once more. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
ช่างตรวจระบบเสร็จตอนบ่ายสามค่ะ
chang truat rabop set ton bai sam kha
The technician finished checking the system at three in the afternoon. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; time adverb anchors completion)
พอกินข้าวเสร็จ เราออกไปเดินข้างนอกกันครับ
pho kin khao set rao ok pai doen khang nok kan khrap
When we've finished eating, let's go for a walk outside. (ordinary polite suggestion, male speaker; completion precedes the next event)
These examples show three environments: a currently relevant result with แล้ว, a past event anchored by clock time, and completion inside a future sequence. เสร็จ has the same form in all three.
เสร็จ and แล้ว are not synonyms
Bare ส่งรายงานแล้ว says that sending has occurred before the reference point. It does not tell us whether writing, editing, or every other task connected with the report is complete. เขียนรายงานเสร็จแล้ว explicitly names the endpoint of writing.
ฉันส่งแบบร่างให้หัวหน้าแล้วค่ะ แต่ยังแก้ไม่เสร็จ
chan song baep rang hai hua na laeo kha tae yang kae mai set
I've sent the draft to my supervisor, but I still haven't finished revising it. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
ทีมแก้เอกสารเสร็จแล้วครับ ตอนนี้ส่งฉบับจริงได้
thim kae ekkasan set laeo khrap ton ni song chabap ching dai
The team has finished revising the document; the final version can be sent now. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
The first target proves that แล้ว alone need not entail completion of a larger project. In the second, เสร็จ supplies the lexical endpoint and แล้ว presents it as attained. This distinction is developed further on the แล้ว perfective page.
เสร็จ, จบ, and หมด choose different endpoints
These three words overlap in English translation but profile different results.
| Completion word | Core endpoint | Natural example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| เสร็จ | task/process completed | ทำแบบฟอร์มเสร็จ | finish completing the form |
| จบ | bounded sequence reaches its end | อ่านนิยายจบ | read the novel to the end |
| หมด | relevant quantity exhausted | กินขนมหมด | eat all the snacks |
| แล้ว | event/state attained or newly relevant | กินขนมแล้ว | have eaten some/the contextually relevant snack |
ฉันอ่านคู่มือจบแล้วค่ะ แต่ยังทำแบบฝึกหัดไม่เสร็จ
chan an khumue chop laeo kha tae yang tham baep fuek hat mai set
I've read the manual to the end, but I still haven't finished the exercises. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
เด็กกินข้าวเสร็จแล้วครับ แต่ยังมีข้าวเหลือในจาน
dek kin khao set laeo khrap tae yang mi khao luea nai chan
The child has finished eating, but there is still rice left on the plate. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; meal activity ended, quantity not exhausted)
เด็กกินข้าวหมดแล้วค่ะ ในจานไม่เหลือเลย
dek kin khao mot laeo kha nai chan mai luea loei
The child has eaten all the rice; none remains on the plate. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; quantity exhausted)
กินข้าวเสร็จ can mean that the person has ended the meal even when food remains. กินข้าวหมด specifically says the relevant rice is all gone. With a text or event organized as a sequence, จบ foregrounds its last point. Some real situations permit more than one construal, so lexical choice is not reducible to an English synonym list.
Event-type restrictions
เสร็จ requires a task, process, or contextually bounded activity. Stable possession and knowledge do not normally provide the right endpoint: รู้คำตอบเสร็จ is not neutral Thai. The speaker must choose a change event such as หาคำตอบเจอ “find the answer” or a bounded task such as ตรวจคำตอบเสร็จ “finish checking the answer.”
อีกสิบนาทีพนักงานจะจัดห้องเสร็จค่ะ
ik sip nathi phanak ngan cha chat hong set kha
The staff will finish arranging the room in another ten minutes. (ordinary polite prediction, female speaker)
งานกำลังจะเสร็จแล้วครับ เหลือแค่ตรวจชื่อ
ngan kamlang cha set laeo khrap luea khae truat chue
The job is nearly finished; only the names remain to be checked. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; approach to the endpoint)
Rather than treating กำลังเสร็จ as a freely available progressive, ordinary Thai commonly uses กำลังจะเสร็จ or ใกล้เสร็จ for approach to completion. The endpoint itself is punctual, while the work leading toward it can unfold.
Negation and scope
งานยังไม่เสร็จ predicates a not-yet-complete state of the task. ทำไม่เสร็จ presents an attempted or relevant activity whose endpoint is not reached. Initial ไม่ได้ทำ can deny that the activity occurred at all.
รายงานยังไม่เสร็จค่ะ ขอเวลาอีกครึ่งชั่วโมงนะคะ
raingan yang mai set kha kho wela ik khrueng chua mong na kha
The report isn't finished yet; please give me another half hour. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
เมื่อคืนผมแก้งานไม่เสร็จครับ เพราะไฟดับ
muea khuen phom kae ngan mai set khrap phro fai dap
I couldn't finish revising the work last night because the power went out. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker; work attempted, endpoint not reached)
เมื่อคืนผมไม่ได้แก้งานครับ ต้องดูแลลูก
muea khuen phom mai dai kae ngan khrap tong dulae luk
I didn't revise the work last night; I had to look after my child. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker; activity denied)
Thai negation therefore cannot be placed by copying English did not finish. The difference between ไม่ได้ทำ and ทำไม่เสร็จ is a difference in scope and event structure.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ตรวจเอกสารชุดนี้เสร็จหรือยังคะ
truat ekkasan chut ni set rue yang kha
Have you finished checking this set of documents yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
เกือบเสร็จแล้วครับ เหลืออีกสองหน้า
kueap set laeo khrap luea ik song na
Almost. There are two pages left. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; task omitted as recoverable)
ถ้าเสร็จแล้วช่วยวางไว้บนโต๊ะฉันนะคะ
tha set laeo chuai wang wai bon to chan na kha
When you're finished, please leave them on my desk. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ ตรวจเสร็จแล้วผมจะเอาไปวางให้
dai khrap truat set laeo phom cha ao pai wang hai
Certainly. Once I've checked them, I'll put them there for you. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Putting เสร็จ before the task as English does
❌ เมื่อวานผมเสร็จทำรายงานครับ
Incorrect—Thai places the complete task before เสร็จ rather than copying English ‘finish doing.’
✅ เมื่อวานผมทำรายงานเสร็จครับ
muea wan phom tham raingan set khrap
I finished the report yesterday. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
2. Inserting เป็น before a completed state
❌ งานชิ้นนี้เป็นเสร็จแล้วค่ะ
Incorrect English-style copular frame—เสร็จ directly predicates completion of the task.
✅ งานชิ้นนี้เสร็จแล้วค่ะ ส่งให้ลูกค้าได้เลย
ngan chin ni set laeo kha song hai luk kha dai loei
This piece of work is finished; it can be sent to the customer now. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
3. Using หมด for completion of a task rather than exhaustion
❌ งานซ่อมหมดแล้วครับ
Wrong for the intended ‘the repair job is complete’—หมด normally profiles exhaustion or absence, not completion of this task.
✅ งานซ่อมเสร็จแล้วครับ ลูกค้ารับเครื่องได้เลย
ngan som set laeo khrap luk kha rap khrueang dai loei
The repair is complete; the customer can collect the device now. (ordinary polite service report, male speaker)
4. Denying the whole activity when an unfinished attempt is intended
❌ เมื่อคืนฉันไม่ได้อ่านหนังสือค่ะ
Wrong for the intended ‘I read but did not finish’; this normally denies the reading event in context.
✅ เมื่อคืนฉันอ่านหนังสือไม่จบค่ะ ง่วงมาก
muea khuen chan an nangsue mai chop kha nguang mak
Last night I didn't finish the book; I was very sleepy. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; reading occurred, endpoint not reached)
Key Takeaways
- เสร็จ names completion of a task or process; it is a lexical endpoint, not tense morphology.
- แล้ว presents attainment or current relevance, so เสร็จแล้ว is meaningful rather than redundant.
- จบ profiles the end of a bounded sequence, while หมด profiles exhaustion of a quantity.
- Event type matters: stable predicates do not freely combine with เสร็จ unless a bounded task is constructed.
- ไม่ได้ทำ denies activity; ทำไม่เสร็จ preserves the attempted activity but denies its completion.
