จบ, เลิก, and Endpoints

Thai does not have one all-purpose equivalent of English finish. จบ reaches the inherent endpoint of an event, text, course, or sequence; เลิก stops, quits, or brings an activity to a close; เสร็จ says a task has been completed. Choosing among them means deciding what kind of boundary the speaker is presenting.

All three are ordinary Central Thai and occur in neutral conversation and writing. More formal institutional language may use สิ้นสุด “come to an end” or ยุติ “terminate,” but those do not replace the everyday contrasts on this page.

หนังเรื่องนี้จบแบบคาดไม่ถึงค่ะ

nang rueang ni chop baep khat mai thueng kha

This film ends unexpectedly. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; the story reaches its inherent endpoint)

เมื่อคืนผมอ่านนิยายจบทั้งเล่มครับ

muea khuen phom an niyai chop thang lem khrap

Last night I finished the entire novel. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; reading reaches the text's endpoint)

พี่ชายเลิกสูบบุหรี่ได้หกเดือนแล้วค่ะ

phi chai loek sup buri dai hok duean laeo kha

My older brother quit smoking six months ago. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; cessation of a habit)

ช่างซ่อมเครื่องปรับอากาศเสร็จแล้วครับ

chang som khrueang prap akat set laeo khrap

The technician has finished repairing the air conditioner. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; assigned task completed)

English uses finish in the film, reading, and repair examples and quit in the habit example. Thai makes the event structure more explicit: a film or text has a natural final boundary, while a repair is a task whose completion produces a usable result.

💡
Ask what ends: the event or text itself (จบ), someone's participation or habit (เลิก), or a piece of work (เสร็จ). That decision predicts the Thai verb better than translating English finish.

จบ: reaching the event's own boundary

จบ works naturally with meetings, films, stories, courses, arguments, and reading or speaking through a bounded text. It may be the main predicate—ประชุมจบ “the meeting ends”—or follow an action phrase—อ่านรายงานจบ “finish reading the report.”

การประชุมจบเร็วกว่าที่วางแผนไว้ค่ะ

kan prachum chop reo kwa thi wangphaen wai kha

The meeting ended earlier than planned. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; event endpoint)

ถ้าผมฟังตอนนี้จบ จะส่งความเห็นให้ครับ

tha phom fang ton ni chop cha song khwam hen hai khrap

When I finish listening to this episode, I'll send my comments. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; bounded media item)

In educational contexts, เรียนจบ means completing a course or graduating, not merely stopping study for the day. เลิกเรียน normally means that class or the school day lets out.

น้องสาวเรียนจบปริญญาตรีปีหน้าค่ะ

nong sao rian chop parinya tri pi na kha

My younger sister graduates with her bachelor's degree next year. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; future endpoint from ปีหน้า)

The last example also shows why จบ is not past tense. The unchanged phrase เรียนจบ receives future time from ปีหน้า.

เลิก: stopping, quitting, or ending participation

เลิก + activity says the activity ceases; it does not guarantee that its natural goal was achieved. Someone can เลิกอ่านหนังสือ midway through a book. With a habit, job, or relationship, เลิก often implies a durable decision: เลิกดื่ม, ลาออก/เลิกทำงานที่นี่, เลิกกับแฟน.

ฝนตกหนัก เราเลยเลิกถ่ายรูปแล้วกลับโรงแรมค่ะ

fon tok nak rao loei loek thai rup laeo klap rongraem kha

It rained heavily, so we stopped taking photos and returned to the hotel. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker; activity abandoned)

วันนี้ผมเลิกงานหกโมงครับ

wan ni phom loek ngan hok mong khrap

I finish work at six today. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; scheduled end of the workday)

เขาพยายามเลิกเล่นพนันอยู่ค่ะ

khao phayayam loek len phanan yu kha

He's trying to quit gambling. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; พยายาม is ongoing while quitting is the goal)

Bare เลิกงาน and เลิกเรียน are conventional schedule expressions. For a formally announced termination, ยุติการประชุม (formal) or สิ้นสุดการประชุม (formal) may appear, but เลิกประชุม remains normal when participants stop meeting.

เสร็จ: the task is done

เสร็จ follows the task predicate or stands alone when the task is recoverable. It answers whether work is done and often licenses the next action. Unlike จบ, it does not require a narrative or institutional event with its own built-in final point.

พอฉันจัดกระเป๋าเสร็จ เราก็ออกเดินทางค่ะ

pho chan chat krapao set rao ko ok doen thang kha

Once I finished packing my bag, we set off. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker; completed preparatory task)

รายงานยังทำไม่เสร็จครับ เหลือส่วนสรุป

raingan yang tham mai set khrap luea suan sarup

The report isn't finished yet; the conclusion remains. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; result-level negation)

The เสร็จ page develops this result predicate. A useful minimal set is อ่านหนังสือจบ “reach the book's end,” เลิกอ่านหนังสือ “stop reading,” and ทำแบบฝึกหัดเสร็จ “complete the exercise task.”

Aspect and discourse around the endpoint

These lexical verbs combine with aspectual material rather than conjugating. กำลังจะจบ views the event just before its endpoint; จบแล้ว presents the endpoint as attained; ยังไม่จบ says it has not yet been reached. กำลัง...อยู่ normally frames the work leading toward an endpoint, not the attained endpoint itself.

การแข่งขันกำลังจะจบแล้วครับ เหลืออีกหนึ่งนาที

kan khaengkhan kamlang cha chop laeo khrap luea ik nueng nathi

The match is about to end; one minute remains. (ordinary polite commentary, male speaker; viewpoint just before the endpoint)

เรื่องนี้ยังไม่จบค่ะ ต้องคุยกันอีกครั้ง

rueang ni yang mai chop kha tong khui kan ik khrang

This matter isn't over yet; we need to talk again. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; expected endpoint not reached)

ตอนที่ฉันโทรไป เขาเพิ่งเลิกประชุมค่ะ

ton thi chan tho pai khao phoeng loek prachum kha

When I called, he had just finished the meeting. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker; recent cessation at a past reference point)

The last clause is past because the call supplies a past anchor. เพิ่ง relates the meeting's cessation closely to that reference point; เลิก itself has no tense form.

💡
Endpoint verbs specify event shape; แล้ว, ยัง, กำลังจะ, and time phrases locate or view that shape. Keep lexical completion separate from grammatical viewpoint.

Negation reveals the contrast

ยังไม่จบ means the inherent endpoint is pending. อ่านไม่จบ can mean that the reader cannot or does not manage to reach the end. ไม่เลิก means “does not/will not stop,” while ยังทำไม่เสร็จ leaves the task unfinished. Thai places negation where its scope belongs; it does not add English do/did.

เอกสารยาวมาก ผมเลยอ่านไม่จบครับ

ekkasan yao mak phom loei an mai chop khrap

The document was so long that I couldn't finish reading it. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; endpoint not reached)

ถึงฝนจะตก เขาก็ไม่เลิกซ้อมค่ะ

thueng fon cha tok khao ko mai loek som kha

Even though it was raining, he didn't stop practicing. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; cessation denied)

Optionality and recoverable tasks

In conversation, the action can be omitted when both speakers know it: เสร็จหรือยัง “finished yet?”, จบกี่โมง “what time does it end?”, เลิกแล้วครับ “I've stopped/quit.” The short form is natural only when the event or habit is active in the discourse.

งานอบรมวันนี้จบกี่โมงคะ

ngan oprom wan ni chop ki mong kha

What time does today's training end? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ประมาณสี่โมงครับ แต่ผมอาจกลับก่อนจบ

praman si mong khrap tae phom at klap kon chop

Around four, but I may leave before it ends. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; event omitted after จบ)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

อ่านสัญญาจบหรือยังคะ

an sanya chop rue yang kha

Have you finished reading the contract? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

อ่านจบแล้วครับ แต่ยังเขียนสรุปไม่เสร็จ

an chop laeo khrap tae yang khian sarup mai set

I've finished reading it, but I haven't finished writing the summary. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; object omission is recoverable)

งั้นเขียนต่อพรุ่งนี้ก็ได้นะคะ

ngan khian to phrung ni ko dai na kha

Then you can continue writing tomorrow. (ordinary polite suggestion, female speaker)

ได้ครับ วันนี้ผมเลิกงานแล้ว

dai khrap wan ni phom loek ngan laeo

All right. I'm off work for today now. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Using เลิก for reaching the end of a book

❌ ฉันอ่านนิยายเลิกแล้วค่ะ

Incorrect for ‘I finished the novel’; เลิก presents cessation, not reaching the text's endpoint.

✅ ฉันอ่านนิยายเรื่องนี้จบแล้วค่ะ

chan an niyai rueang ni chop laeo kha

I've finished this novel. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Using จบ for an abandoned habit

❌ ผมจบสูบบุหรี่แล้วครับ

Incorrect—quitting a habit uses เลิก before the activity.

✅ ผมเลิกสูบบุหรี่แล้วครับ

phom loek sup buri laeo khrap

I've quit smoking. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

3. Copying an English infinitive marker between phase verbs

❌ เขาเลิกเพื่อเล่นเกมแล้วค่ะ

Incorrect for ‘she stopped playing games’; เพื่อ introduces purpose, not an infinitive after เลิก.

✅ เขาเลิกเล่นเกมตอนดึกแล้วค่ะ

khao loek len kem ton duek laeo kha

She has stopped playing games late at night. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

4. Treating แล้ว as sufficient lexical completion

❌ ผมทำรายงานแล้วครับ หมายความว่าทำเสร็จทุกส่วน

Incorrect claim—แล้ว makes the event relevant/attained, but เสร็จ explicitly states task completion.

✅ ผมทำรายงานเสร็จครบทุกส่วนแล้วครับ

phom tham raingan set khrop thuk suan laeo khrap

I've completed every section of the report. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • จบ reaches the inherent endpoint of an event, text, course, or sequence.
  • เลิก stops or abandons an activity, habit, job period, or relationship; its goal need not be achieved.
  • เสร็จ presents an assigned task as completed and ready for the next step.
  • The verbs are invariant; time and viewpoint come from context, adverbs, and markers such as แล้ว, ยัง, and กำลังจะ.
  • Negation and omission follow Thai scope and discourse, not English auxiliary or infinitive patterns.
