เริ่ม presents the onset of a situation: the point or early phase at which an activity, process, or state begins to hold. In เริ่มอ่านรายงาน, attention goes to the beginning of reading; in เริ่มหนาว, a temperature state starts developing. The following predicate remains an ordinary uninflected Thai verb or stative predicate.
เริ่ม is neutral in conversation and writing. เริ่มต้น is also common and can sound slightly more deliberate when speakers identify a starting stage, while institutional prose may use เริ่มดำเนินการ (formal) “commence operations.”
Position and productive complements
The central pattern is subject/topic + เริ่ม + [predicate phrase]. เริ่ม can also take a conventional event noun directly, as in เริ่มงาน or เริ่มประชุม, and เริ่มจาก/เริ่มด้วย identifies a starting source or first item.
| Productive frame | Substitution | Natural result | Onset selected |
|---|---|---|---|
| เริ่ม + [predicate] | อ่านเอกสาร | เริ่มอ่านเอกสาร | activity |
| เข้าใจระบบ | เริ่มเข้าใจระบบ | developing cognition | |
| เย็นลง | อากาศเริ่มเย็นลง | scalar change | |
| เริ่ม + [event noun] | งาน / ประชุม | เริ่มงาน / เริ่มประชุม | conventional event |
| เริ่มจาก/ด้วย + [first element] | บทแรก / คำถามง่าย ๆ | เริ่มจากบทแรก / เริ่มด้วยคำถามง่าย ๆ | first stage or source |
เช้านี้ฉันเริ่มอ่านเอกสารตั้งแต่แปดโมงค่ะ
chao ni chan roem an ekkasan tangtae paet mong kha
This morning I started reading the documents at eight. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; activity onset)
พนักงานใหม่เริ่มเข้าใจระบบมากขึ้นแล้วครับ
phanakngan mai roem khao chai rabop mak khuen laeo khrap
The new employee is beginning to understand the system better now. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; developing cognition)
ช่วงเย็นอากาศเริ่มเย็นลงค่ะ
chuang yen akat roem yen long kha
Toward evening, the weather starts getting cooler. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; scalar change)
English requires start to understand or start getting. Thai places two invariant predicates together. There is no infinitive marker between เริ่ม and เข้าใจ, and no conjugated form of either.
Onset versus preparation versus ongoingness
เริ่ม asserts that the following situation has entered its beginning. กำลังจะ + event instead looks forward from just before the event, while กำลัง + event looks inside an event already under way.
เจ้าหน้าที่กำลังจะเริ่มสัมภาษณ์ผู้สมัครครับ
chaonathi kamlang cha roem samphat phu samak khrap
The officer is about to begin interviewing the applicants. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; interview has not begun)
เจ้าหน้าที่เริ่มสัมภาษณ์ผู้สมัครแล้วค่ะ
chaonathi roem samphat phu samak laeo kha
The officer has started interviewing the applicants. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; onset attained)
เจ้าหน้าที่กำลังสัมภาษณ์ผู้สมัครอยู่ครับ
chaonathi kamlang samphat phu samak yu khrap
The officer is interviewing the applicants. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; internal ongoing viewpoint)
This minimal sequence locates three different viewpoints: before the onset, at/after the onset, and inside the activity. เตรียมสัมภาษณ์ “prepare to interview” names preparation and likewise does not entail that interviewing has begun. The กำลังจะ page develops the viewpoint immediately before an event.
Event type controls naturalness
Activities, gradual changes, and many states have a plausible beginning. Stable relations can use เริ่ม only when speakers construe a real transition: เริ่มชอบ “begin to like,” เริ่มรู้สึกดีขึ้น “begin to feel better.” A punctual achievement with no preparatory phase normally resists bare เริ่ม.
หลังจากคุยกับทีม ฉันเริ่มชอบแนวคิดนี้ค่ะ
lang chak khui kap thim chan roem chop naeo khit ni kha
After talking with the team, I began to like this idea. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; transition into a preference)
เด็กเริ่มง่วงแล้วครับ เดี๋ยวพาไปนอน
dek roem nguang laeo khrap diao pha pai non
The child is starting to get sleepy; I'll take them to bed shortly. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; onset of a bodily state)
เริ่มถึงสถานี is not the neutral way to say “be about to reach the station,” because arrival is treated as a boundary rather than an extended activity. Say กำลังจะถึงสถานี. By contrast, เริ่มเดินทาง is natural because the journey has duration after its onset.
ขบวนรถกำลังจะถึงสถานีแล้วค่ะ
khabuan rot kamlang cha thueng sathani laeo kha
The train is about to reach the station. (formal-polite announcement, female speaker; imminent boundary, not เริ่มถึง)
There is no completely context-free list. A normally punctual event can be reinterpreted as a series—ผู้โดยสารเริ่มมาถึงแล้ว “passengers have started arriving”—because multiple arrivals create an extended onset phase.
แขกเริ่มมาถึงงานแล้วครับ
khaek roem ma thueng ngan laeo khrap
Guests have started arriving at the event. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; repeated arrivals create a developing phase)
เริ่มแล้ว and กำลังเริ่ม
เริ่ม + event + แล้ว presents the onset as attained and currently relevant. กำลังเริ่ม + event places attention inside a gradual or organized beginning. The latter is natural when starting itself takes time, but it sounds heavy with an instantaneous switch.
บริษัทเริ่มทดลองระบบใหม่แล้วค่ะ
borisat roem thotlong rabop mai laeo kha
The company has begun testing the new system. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; onset currently relevant)
ตลาดกำลังเริ่มคึกคักครับ ร้านค้าทยอยเปิด
talat kamlang roem khuekkhak khrap ran kha thayoi poet
The market is beginning to get lively; the shops are opening one by one. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; gradual onset)
Aspectual อยู่ does not normally follow bare เริ่ม simply to mean “is starting.” If the onset is gradual, กำลังเริ่ม... often suffices; if the post-onset activity continues, say เริ่มทำแล้ว ตอนนี้ยังทำอยู่. The two clauses keep onset and continuation distinct.
ฉันเริ่มจัดห้องแล้วค่ะ ตอนนี้ยังจัดอยู่
chan roem chat hong laeo kha ton ni yang chat yu
I've started arranging the room, and I'm still doing it now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; onset and continuation separately scoped)
Reference time and optionality
เริ่ม does not itself mean past. A time phrase can locate the onset earlier or later, and discourse can omit it when only the activity matters.
ปีหน้าผมเริ่มทำงานที่สาขาใหม่ครับ
pi na phom roem tham ngan thi sakha mai khrap
Next year I start working at the new branch. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; future time from ปีหน้า)
In a timetable, ประชุมเก้าโมง can mean “the meeting is at nine”; เริ่มประชุมเก้าโมง explicitly profiles the starting boundary. Omitting เริ่ม is possible because the event and clock time support a schedule reading, but the bare clause does not highlight inception.
Negation: no onset versus onset of a negative state
ยังไม่เริ่ม V means V has not started yet. ไม่ได้เริ่ม V denies a start in a relevant past situation. เริ่มไม่ P is different: it says the negative predicate begins to hold, as in เริ่มไม่สบาย “start to feel unwell.”
โครงการยังไม่เริ่มครับ กำลังรออนุมัติงบประมาณ
khrongkan yang mai roem khrap kamlang ro anumat ngoppraman
The project hasn't started yet; we're waiting for budget approval. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
ตอนบ่ายฉันเริ่มไม่สบายค่ะ เลยกลับก่อน
ton bai chan roem mai sabai kha loei klap kon
In the afternoon I started feeling unwell, so I left early. (ordinary polite narrative, female speaker; onset of a negative condition)
English auxiliary order cannot determine these scopes. Thai ยังไม่เริ่ม negates onset; เริ่มไม่สบาย places the negative condition inside the inceptive frame.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
เริ่มนำเสนอได้เลยไหมคะ
roem nam sanoe dai loei mai kha
May we begin the presentation now? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)
ได้ครับ เริ่มจากสรุปผลก่อน
dai khrap roem chak sarup phon kon
Yes. Start with the summary of the results. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้าอย่างนั้นฉันเริ่มเลยนะคะ
tha yang nan chan roem loei na kha
In that case, I'll begin now. (ordinary polite response, female speaker; presentation omitted recoverably)
เชิญครับ ทุกคนพร้อมแล้ว
choen khrap thuk khon phrom laeo
Please do. Everyone is ready. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting เพื่อ as an English infinitive marker
❌ ผมเริ่มเพื่ออ่านรายงานครับ
Incorrect—เพื่อ expresses purpose; เริ่ม takes the event directly.
✅ ผมเริ่มอ่านรายงานฉบับใหม่แล้วครับ
phom roem an raingan chabap mai laeo khrap
I've started reading the new report. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
2. Using เริ่ม for an imminent punctual arrival
❌ รถไฟเริ่มถึงสถานีค่ะ
Unnatural for ‘the train is about to arrive’; ถึง is treated as the arrival boundary.
✅ รถไฟกำลังจะถึงสถานีค่ะ
rotfai kamlang cha thueng sathani kha
The train is about to reach the station. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
3. Confusing preparation with actual onset
❌ ฉันเตรียมเปิดร้านแล้ว แปลว่าร้านเริ่มเปิดค่ะ
Incorrect claim—preparation can occur before the shop actually begins operating.
✅ ฉันเตรียมเปิดร้านค่ะ แต่จะเริ่มขายเดือนหน้า
chan triam poet ran kha tae cha roem khai duean na
I'm preparing to open a shop, but I'll start selling next month. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Misplacing negation by English order
❌ งานเริ่มยังไม่ครับ
Incorrect—ยังไม่ precedes เริ่ม when the onset has not occurred.
✅ งานยังไม่เริ่มครับ ผู้เข้าร่วมกำลังลงทะเบียน
ngan yang mai roem khrap phu khao ruam kamlang long thabian
The event hasn't started; participants are registering. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- เริ่ม + predicate presents entry into an activity, process, or state; no infinitive marker appears.
- กำลังจะเริ่ม is before onset, เริ่ม...แล้ว says onset is attained, and กำลัง...อยู่ looks inside the subsequent event.
- Event type matters: extended activities and changes fit readily, while punctual boundaries need an extended-series interpretation.
- เริ่ม is not tense; time expressions and discourse locate the onset.
- ยังไม่เริ่ม P negates inception, while เริ่มไม่ P marks the onset of a negative state.
