กำลังจะ for Imminence

กำลังจะ + event places the viewpoint immediately before the event's beginning: preparations are in place, signs are visible, or the event is close enough to matter now. It commonly translates as be about to, but it is not a future-tense form of the verb. The verb remains unchanged, and an explicit or contextual reference time can be present, past, or projected.

The contrast with plain กำลัง is crucial. ฝนกำลังตก looks inside falling rain; ฝนกำลังจะตก looks at the signs just before the rain begins. For the broader system, compare กำลัง before an ongoing event and time without tense.

The productive frame

The neutral order is subject/topic + กำลังจะ + event phrase. กำลังจะ precedes the whole event, including its object, direction, or result. It does not split an action from its object, and the following verb is not an English infinitive.

SlotSubstitutionNatural frameImminent boundary
subject + กำลังจะ + [event]ออกรถกำลังจะออกdeparture
ตกฝนกำลังจะตกstart of rain
เริ่มประชุมเรากำลังจะเริ่มประชุมmeeting starts
ปิดร้านพนักงานกำลังจะปิดร้านclosing begins
รู้ผลเรากำลังจะรู้ผลresult becomes known

รถไฟกำลังจะออกจากชานชาลาครับ

rot fai kamlang cha ok chak chan chala khrap

The train is about to leave the platform. (ordinary polite announcement, male speaker)

ฝนกำลังจะตกค่ะ เก็บผ้าที่ตากไว้ก่อนนะคะ

fon kamlang cha tok kha kep pha thi tak wai kon na kha

It's about to rain; bring in the laundry first, please. (ordinary polite warning, female speaker)

การประชุมกำลังจะเริ่มแล้วครับ กรุณาปิดเสียงโทรศัพท์

kan prachum kamlang cha roem laeo khrap karuna pit siang thorasap

The meeting is about to start; please silence your phone. (polite workplace announcement, male speaker)

In the last example, final แล้ว does not say that the meeting has finished. It marks the imminent phase as newly relevant: the start is now at hand. กำลังจะ already supplies the pre-event viewpoint; แล้ว adds a change-of-situation or urgency nuance. The shorter การประชุมกำลังจะเริ่ม is complete without it.

💡
Keep the event together after กำลังจะ: กำลังจะส่งเอกสารให้ลูกค้า, not a word-for-word English arrangement that inserts กำลังจะ between ส่ง and เอกสาร.

Imminence is narrower than plain จะ

Plain จะ presents an event as prospective, intended, predicted, or otherwise not yet realized. It can refer to tomorrow or next year. กำลังจะ narrows the view to the threshold immediately before realization. Context determines how short that interval is; there is no fixed number of minutes.

ปีหน้าฉันจะย้ายไปเชียงใหม่ค่ะ

pi na chan cha yai pai chiang mai kha

Next year I'll move to Chiang Mai. (ordinary polite plan, female speaker; broad prospect, not necessarily imminent)

ฉันกำลังจะย้ายออกสิ้นเดือนนี้ค่ะ เลยเริ่มเก็บของแล้ว

chan kamlang cha yai ok sin duean ni kha loei roem kep khong laeo

I'm about to move out at the end of this month, so I've started packing. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; preparations make the move current)

The second interval spans more than a few seconds, yet the move has entered its preparatory phase. That is why translating กำลังจะ mechanically as “in the next instant” is too narrow. Conversely, a remote plan with no present threshold normally uses จะ, วางแผนจะ, or ตั้งใจจะ rather than กำลังจะ.

Event shape and coercion

Beginnings, departures, arrivals, changes, and bounded actions naturally provide a boundary that กำลังจะ can approach. Stable possession or knowledge normally does not. Thai can nevertheless use a state word when context turns it into an entry into that state.

เด็กกำลังจะหลับค่ะ ช่วยพูดเบา ๆ หน่อยนะคะ

dek kamlang cha lap kha chuai phut bao bao noi na kha

The child is about to fall asleep; please speak quietly. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

อีกไม่กี่นาทีเรากำลังจะรู้ผลตรวจแล้วครับ

ik mai ki nathi rao kamlang cha ru phon truat laeo khrap

In a few minutes, we're about to learn the test result. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Bare รู้ผล describes knowing the result, but under กำลังจะ it is naturally understood as crossing into knowledge. By contrast, กำลังจะมีรถ needs a context such as a household about to acquire a car or a road about to receive traffic; it cannot simply mean “currently has a car.” Event type and discourse jointly license the construction.

💡
With a state predicate, ask what change is approaching. กำลังจะรู้ผล means “be about to come to know the result”; it does not display knowledge as an activity already unfolding.

The reference point need not be now

Because กำลังจะ supplies viewpoint rather than tense, a narrative can locate the threshold in the past. The form itself does not change.

ตอนที่ฉันโทรไป เขากำลังจะขึ้นเครื่องค่ะ

ton thi chan tho pai khao kamlang cha khuen khrueang kha

When I called, he was about to board the plane. (ordinary polite past narrative, female speaker)

พรุ่งนี้เวลานี้เราคงกำลังจะถึงโรงแรมครับ

phrung ni wela ni rao khong kamlang cha thueng rongraem khrap

At this time tomorrow, we'll probably be about to reach the hotel. (ordinary polite projection, male speaker)

English changes is about to to was about to or will be about to. Thai leaves กำลังจะขึ้น and กำลังจะถึง invariant; ตอนที่ฉันโทรไป and พรุ่งนี้เวลานี้ establish the reference time.

Negation follows meaning and scope

English auxiliary order is not a template for Thai. Initial ไม่ได้กำลังจะ + event is possible in an explicit correction: it denies that the subject is in the imminent preparatory phase. Inside the construction, กำลังจะ + negative predicate instead presents a negative outcome as imminent.

ผมไม่ได้กำลังจะลาออกครับ แค่ขอเปลี่ยนวันหยุด

phom mai dai kamlang cha la ok khrap khae kho plian wan yut

I'm not about to resign; I'm only asking to change my day off. (ordinary corrective speech, male speaker)

น้ำในถังกำลังจะไม่พอใช้แล้วครับ ต้องสั่งเพิ่ม

nam nai thang kamlang cha mai pho chai laeo khrap tong sang phoem

The water in the tank is about to become insufficient; we need to order more. (ordinary polite warning, male speaker; ไม่พอ is the looming outcome)

The second example does not negate กำลังจะ. It affirms that ไม่พอใช้ “be insufficient for use” is close to becoming true. When the intended meaning is simply “has not started yet,” Thai normally uses ยังไม่ + event, not a forced negative of กำลังจะ.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

คุณกำลังจะกลับแล้วหรือคะ

khun kamlang cha klap laeo rue kha

Are you about to leave now? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ครับ รถไฟเที่ยวสุดท้ายกำลังจะออก ผมต้องรีบไปชานชาลาที่สาม

khrap rot fai thiao sutthai kamlang cha ok phom tong rip pai chan chala thi sam

Yes. The last train is about to leave, and I need to hurry to platform three. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

งั้นรีบไปเถอะค่ะ เดี๋ยวไม่ทัน

ngan rip pai thoe kha diao mai than

Then hurry along, or you might miss it. (ordinary polite encouragement, female speaker)

The participants omit repeated subjects and destinations because they are recoverable. กำลังจะ remains only where the imminent boundary is relevant.

Common Mistakes

1. Confusing an unfolding event with its imminent start

❌ ตอนนี้ฝนกำลังจะตกอยู่ค่ะ

Wrong for the intended report ‘it is raining now’—กำลังจะ places the rain before its beginning.

✅ ตอนนี้ฝนกำลังตกอยู่ค่ะ

ton ni fon kamlang tok yu kha

It's raining now. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; event already under way)

2. Using กำลังจะ for a remote plan with no current threshold

❌ อีกสิบปีผมกำลังจะเกษียณครับ

Unnatural without a special context that makes retirement an imminent current phase.

✅ อีกสิบปีผมจะเกษียณครับ

ik sip pi phom cha kasian khrap

I'll retire in ten years. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker; broad future prospect)

3. Moving the marker inside the event phrase

❌ พนักงานส่งกำลังจะเอกสารให้ลูกค้าค่ะ

Incorrect—กำลังจะ precedes the complete delivery event; it does not conjugate ส่ง or split it from its object.

✅ พนักงานกำลังจะส่งเอกสารให้ลูกค้าค่ะ

phanak ngan kamlang cha song ekkasan hai luk kha kha

The employee is about to send the documents to the customer. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

4. Copying English auxiliary negation order

❌ ผมกำลังไม่จะกลับครับ

Incorrect for ‘I'm not about to return’; English-style separation of the marker produces the wrong Thai order.

✅ ผมไม่ได้กำลังจะกลับครับ ผมเพิ่งมาถึง

phom mai dai kamlang cha klap khrap phom phoeng ma thueng

I'm not about to leave; I've only just arrived. (ordinary corrective speech, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • กำลังจะ + event views the phase immediately before the event begins.
  • Plain จะ is broader; plain กำลัง views an event already unfolding.
  • Imminence is relative to a discourse reference point, so กำลังจะ can appear in past or projected scenes.
  • Final แล้ว may add newly relevant threshold or urgency, but it is not required.
  • Negation must reflect scope: ไม่ได้กำลังจะ... denies imminence, while กำลังจะไม่ทัน presents failure as imminent.
