Preverbal กำลัง presents an event from inside its unfolding phase. In กำลังอ่านรายงาน, the speaker directs attention to the reading while it is under way, without showing its beginning or endpoint. This is aspectual viewpoint, not an ending that conjugates อ่าน for an English-style present progressive.
The ordinary construction is neutral across conversation and writing. It often describes what is happening now, but a time expression or the surrounding discourse can anchor the same viewpoint in the past or in a projected scene.
The productive position: before the whole event phrase
The basic frame is subject/topic + กำลัง + event phrase. The event phrase includes the verb and material closely belonging to it—its object, direction, result, or serialized action. กำลัง does not normally split a verb from its object.
| Productive slot | Substitution | Natural frame | View |
|---|---|---|---|
| subject + กำลัง + [event] | อ่านรายงาน | เขากำลังอ่านรายงาน | reading is under way |
| คุยกับลูกค้า | เขากำลังคุยกับลูกค้า | conversation is under way | |
| เดินกลับบ้าน | เขากำลังเดินกลับบ้าน | homeward walk is under way | |
| เอาเอกสารไปส่ง | เขากำลังเอาเอกสารไปส่ง | the whole delivery sequence is under way | |
| ดีขึ้น | อาการกำลังดีขึ้น | change along a scale is unfolding |
ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังกรอกแบบฟอร์มสมัครงานค่ะ
ton ni chan kamlang krok baep fom samak ngan kha
I'm filling out a job-application form now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; ongoing activity)
พนักงานกำลังเอาพัสดุไปส่งให้ลูกค้าครับ
phanakngan kamlang ao phatsadu pai song hai luk kha khrap
The employee is taking the parcel to deliver it to the customer. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; กำลัง scopes over the complete verb chain)
อาการของคุณแม่กำลังดีขึ้นค่ะ
akan khong khun mae kamlang di khuen kha
My mother's condition is improving. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; dynamic change rather than a stable property)
English places be before an -ing form and may tempt learners to look for two Thai verb forms. Thai instead leaves every verb unchanged: เอา, ไป, and ส่ง remain ordinary verbs inside one event phrase framed by กำลัง.
Ongoing does not necessarily mean “now”
Without another anchor, an utterance with กำลัง is often understood relative to speech time. That is an inference from the conversational setting, not a grammatical present tense. ตอนนั้น can place the same form in the past, while a future scene can contain an event expected to be in progress then.
ตอนที่ไฟดับ ผมกำลังอาบน้ำครับ
ton thi fai dap phom kamlang ap nam khrap
When the power went out, I was taking a shower. (ordinary polite narrative, male speaker; past reference supplied by the first clause)
พรุ่งนี้เวลานี้เราคงกำลังเดินทางกลับค่ะ
phrung ni wela ni rao khong kamlang doen thang klap kha
At this time tomorrow, we'll probably be traveling back. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; projected ongoing event)
The English translations change from was taking to will be traveling. Thai กำลัง contributes the same internal viewpoint in both. ตอนที่ไฟดับ and พรุ่งนี้เวลานี้, together with คง in the projection, locate and qualify the events.
Which predicates fit กำลัง?
Activities and unfolding processes combine readily with กำลัง: speaking, waiting, cooking, changing, and moving. Stable possession, identity, and factual knowledge normally do not have an internal course for กำลัง to display.
ผมกำลังรอผลตรวจอยู่หน้าห้องครับ
phom kamlang ro phon truat yu na hong khrap
I'm waiting for the test result outside the room. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; ongoing activity)
ช่วงนี้ธุรกิจกำลังเติบโตเร็วค่ะ
chuang ni thurakit kamlang toepto reo kha
The business is growing quickly these days. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; unfolding change over a broader present period)
A punctual event can occur with กำลัง only when context gives it a developing phase. ไฟกำลังดับ focuses on the light going out; ไฟดับแล้ว presents the transition as attained. By contrast, stable รู้คำตอบ “know the answer” is ordinarily bare. The dedicated stative-progressive page treats the genuine gray areas.
There is no purely mechanical list. คิด is stative when it means “hold an opinion” in คิดว่า..., but process-like in กำลังคิดหาทางแก้ “be thinking of a solution.” The construction and the intended construal work together.
ฉันกำลังคิดหาวิธีลดค่าใช้จ่ายค่ะ
chan kamlang khit ha withi lot kha chai chai kha
I'm thinking of a way to reduce expenses. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; active deliberation)
Optionality and the discourse anchor
Thai often omits กำลัง when a question, visible scene, or earlier clause already makes ongoingness obvious. The omission removes explicit internal viewpoint; it does not automatically change the event into a completed one.
ทำอะไรอยู่คะ
tham arai yu kha
What are you doing? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; อยู่ explicitly establishes an ongoing frame)
เตรียมเอกสารสำหรับประชุมครับ
triam ekkasan samrap prachum khrap
Preparing the documents for the meeting. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; subject and กำลัง omitted because the question supplies them)
Adding กำลัง to the reply—กำลังเตรียมเอกสาร...—makes the internal view explicit, but it is not required. In an out-of-the-blue announcement, explicit marking often prevents the bare predicate from being heard as a routine or scheduled event.
กำลัง, อยู่, แล้ว, and กำลังจะ
Postpredicate อยู่ can reinforce that the event holds at the reference time: กำลังอ่านอยู่. This bracketing frame is covered on กำลัง…อยู่. กำลัง alone foregrounds progression; the full frame combines that with continuation.
กำลัง + event + แล้ว is possible when แล้ว scopes over entry into a new phase rather than declaring the event finished. It often corresponds to “is now beginning to...” or “is already ...ing”:
หลังจากรถติดมานาน ตอนนี้การจราจรกำลังคล่องขึ้นแล้วครับ
lang chak rot tit ma nan ton ni kancharachon kamlang khlong khuen laeo khrap
After a long period of congestion, traffic is now beginning to flow more freely. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; กำลัง profiles the unfolding improvement, while แล้ว marks its newly established onset)
Do not confuse progressive กำลัง + event with prospective กำลังจะ + event, “be about to.” The first places the viewpoint inside an event; the second locates the viewpoint just before it.
ฝนกำลังตกค่ะ
fon kamlang tok kha
It's raining. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; rain is under way)
ฝนกำลังจะตกครับ เก็บผ้าเข้าบ้านก่อน
fon kamlang cha tok khrap kep pha khao ban kon
It's about to rain; bring the laundry inside first. (ordinary polite warning, male speaker; imminent, not yet raining)
Negation follows Thai scope
English says is not reading, with negation after the inflected auxiliary. Thai does not copy that order as ไม่กำลังอ่าน in an ordinary neutral denial. A natural corrective pattern is ไม่ได้ + event + อยู่, while กำลังไม่สบาย is possible because ไม่สบาย “be unwell” forms the predicate under กำลัง.
ผมไม่ได้เล่นเกมอยู่ครับ กำลังตอบข้อความลูกค้า
phom mai dai len kem yu khrap kamlang top khokhwam luk kha
I'm not playing a game; I'm answering customer messages. (ordinary corrective speech, male speaker)
This is another reason not to treat กำลัง as a conjugated equivalent of English be. Negation chooses its Thai scope construction.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ตอนนี้คุณกำลังกลับบ้านหรือยังคะ
ton ni khun kamlang klap ban rue yang kha
Are you on your way home yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ยังครับ ผมกำลังคุยกับหัวหน้า
yang khrap phom kamlang khui kap huana
Not yet. I'm talking with my supervisor. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้าเสร็จแล้วโทรบอกด้วยนะคะ
tha set laeo tho bok duai na kha
When you're finished, please call and let me know. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ อีกประมาณสิบนาที
dai khrap ik praman sip nathi
Sure—about another ten minutes. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Moving กำลัง behind the verb
❌ ฉันเขียนกำลังรายงานค่ะ
Incorrect—preverbal กำลัง cannot be inserted between เขียน and its object this way.
✅ ฉันกำลังเขียนรายงานประจำสัปดาห์ค่ะ
chan kamlang khian raingan pracham sapda kha
I'm writing the weekly report. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
2. Treating a stable fact as an unfolding event
❌ ผมกำลังมีพี่สาวสองคนครับ
Incorrect for ordinary possession—having two older sisters is a stable relation, not a developing process.
✅ ผมมีพี่สาวสองคนครับ
phom mi phi sao song khon khrap
I have two older sisters. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Confusing ongoing with imminent
❌ รถกำลังออกแล้วครับ
Wrong for the intended meaning ‘the bus is about to leave’; without จะ, this presents departure as already unfolding and แล้ว adds a changed-situation reading.
✅ รถเที่ยวสุดท้ายกำลังจะออกแล้วครับ รีบขึ้นได้เลย
rot thiao sutthai kamlang cha ok laeo khrap rip khuen dai loei
The last bus is about to leave; please get on quickly. (ordinary polite warning, male speaker)
4. Copying English auxiliary-negation order
❌ เขาไม่กำลังทำงานอยู่ค่ะ
Unnatural as a neutral denial copied from English ‘is not’; Thai normally chooses a scope construction with ไม่ได้.
✅ เขาไม่ได้ทำงานอยู่ค่ะ เขากำลังพัก
khao mai dai tham ngan yu kha khao kamlang phak
She isn't working; she's taking a break. (ordinary corrective speech, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- กำลัง + event phrase gives an internal view of a dynamic phase; the verb itself never changes.
- Present, past, or projected time comes from the reference frame, not from กำลัง alone.
- Dynamic predicates fit readily; stable predicates require a coherent process or change reading.
- กำลัง may be omitted when discourse already supplies ongoingness, but its position and scope are not optional when it is expressed.
- Keep ongoing กำลังทำ, imminent กำลังจะทำ, and bracketed กำลังทำอยู่ analytically distinct.
