อ่าน: read

Thai อ่าน is the invariant verb “read.” It directly takes texts and signs, combines with ออกเสียง for reading aloud, and enters result constructions such as อ่านออก “be able to decode/read” and อ่านไม่ออก “cannot make out/read.” It also extends to interpretation in อ่านสถานการณ์ “read the situation” and อ่านใจ “read someone's mind or feelings.” These frames share the same unchanged headword but differ in what follows it.

Reading texts and written material

A text, book, message, sign, or document follows อ่าน directly. อ่านหนังสือ can mean read a book or engage in reading/study generally; context determines whether one specific book is involved.

ทุกเช้าผมอ่านข่าวระหว่างนั่งรถไปทำงานครับ

thuk chao phom an khao rawang nang rot pai tham ngan khrap

Every morning I read the news while riding to work. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ฉันอ่านอีเมลแล้ว แต่ยังไม่ได้เปิดไฟล์แนบค่ะ

chan an imen laeo tae yang mai dai poet fai naep kha

I've read the email, but I haven't opened the attachment yet. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

ช่วยอ่านป้ายข้างประตูให้หน่อยได้ไหมครับ

chuai an pai khang pratu hai noi dai mai khrap

Could you read the sign beside the door for me? (ordinary polite request, male speaker)

English read has the same spelling in present and past but different pronunciations. Thai has no comparable tense alternation: อ่าน stays อ่าน. Context and expressions such as เมื่อเช้า, กำลัง, จบ, แล้ว, and จะ locate the event.

💡
Keep text and completion separate: อ่านรายงาน names the reading event; อ่านรายงานจบแล้ว says the reader reached the end. แล้ว alone does not always guarantee that the whole text was finished.

อ่านออกเสียง: reading aloud

อ่านออกเสียง is the established order “read aloud,” literally involving producing the sound. The text can follow the full expression. อ่านดัง means read loudly; it describes volume and is not automatically the same as reading aloud for an audience or exercise.

ครูให้นักเรียนอ่านออกเสียงทีละย่อหน้าค่ะ

khru hai nakrian an ok siang thi la yo na kha

The teacher has the students read aloud one paragraph at a time. (ordinary polite instructional report, female speaker)

ผมจะอ่านประกาศนี้ออกเสียงให้ทุกคนฟังครับ

phom cha an prakat ni ok siang hai thuk khon fang khrap

I'll read this announcement aloud for everyone. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Both อ่านออกเสียงข้อความ and อ่านข้อความออกเสียง occur; the first packages the established manner expression before the text, while the second places the text immediately after อ่าน and adds the manner afterward. Do not reverse ออกเสียง into เสียงออก.

อ่านออก, อ่านไม่ออก, and อ่านไม่ได้

Postverbal ออก presents successful decoding or legibility: เด็กอ่านออกแล้ว “the child can read now,” ลายมือนี้อ่านไม่ออก “this handwriting is illegible to me.” อ่านไม่ได้ is broader. It can mean reading is impossible because of circumstances, permission, a damaged file, or ability. When the issue is specifically recognizing the written forms, อ่านไม่ออก is precise.

ลูกอ่านป้ายสั้น ๆ ออกแล้วค่ะ

luk an pai san san ok laeo kha

My child can read short signs now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; literacy result)

ผมอ่านลายมือบรรทัดสุดท้ายไม่ออกครับ

phom an lai mue banthat sutthai mai ok khrap

I can't make out the handwriting on the last line. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; decoding failure)

ไฟล์เสียค่ะ ตอนนี้เปิดอ่านไม่ได้

fai sia kha ton ni poet an mai dai

The file is corrupted; it can't be opened and read right now. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; situational impossibility)

These are predicate chains, not conjugations. In อ่านไม่ออก, ไม่ scopes over the result ออก. In ไม่อ่าน, it negates the reading event itself: “does not read / will not read.”

The result-predicate reference explains why the postverbal result can be negated separately from the reading activity.

💡
Use อ่านไม่ออก when letters, handwriting, or wording cannot be decoded. Use อ่านไม่ได้ when reading is impossible or disallowed more generally. Context sometimes permits overlap, but the two constructions highlight different problems.

Figurative reading and interpretation

อ่านสถานการณ์ means assess what a situation implies (neutral-careful). อ่านใจ means infer someone's thoughts or feelings and is common in conversation and writing. อ่านเกม means anticipate how a game, negotiation, or strategic situation is developing (neutral to informal). These are conventional extensions; they do not license อ่าน with every English object of read.

หัวหน้าคนใหม่อ่านสถานการณ์ได้เร็วครับ

hua na khon mai an sathanakan dai reo khrap

The new supervisor reads situations quickly. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; interpretation)

ฉันอ่านใจเขาไม่ออกจริง ๆ ค่ะ

chan an chai khao mai ok ching ching kha

I really can't read what he's thinking. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; figurative result frame)

โค้ชอ่านเกมขาดและเปลี่ยนแผนทันทีครับ

khot an kem khat lae plian phaen thanthi khrap

The coach read the game perfectly and changed the plan immediately. (neutral sports commentary, male voice)

อ่านเกมขาด is an established evaluative expression meaning see the strategic situation clearly. It is not built by translating each English word freely.

An invariant-form matrix

Reading is an activity, so กำลัง naturally presents it in progress. Completion can be made explicit with จบแล้ว, while time and negation remain separate.

EnvironmentThai patternInterpretation source
past contextเมื่อคืนผมอ่านบทความนี้เมื่อคืน locates reading earlier
ongoing eventฉันกำลังอ่านสัญญากำลัง presents reading in progress
completed textเขาอ่านคู่มือจบแล้วจบแล้ว presents reaching the end
future planพวกเราจะอ่านรายงานพรุ่งนี้จะ and พรุ่งนี้ locate reading later
negative habitเขาไม่อ่านข่าวในโทรศัพท์ไม่ before อ่าน denies the activity

เมื่อคืนผมอ่านบทความเรื่องการเดินทางครับ

muea khuen phom an botkhwam rueang kan doen thang khrap

Last night I read an article about travel. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; past from context)

ฉันกำลังอ่านสัญญา ขอเวลาตรวจรายละเอียดอีกหน่อยค่ะ

chan kamlang an sanya kho wela truat raiat ik noi kha

I'm reading the contract; please give me a little more time to check the details. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

เขาอ่านคู่มือการติดตั้งจบแล้วครับ

khao an khumue kan tittang chop laeo khrap

He has finished reading the installation manual. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

พรุ่งนี้พวกเราจะอ่านรายงานฉบับแก้ไขค่ะ

phrung ni phuak rao cha an raingan chabap kaekhai kha

Tomorrow we'll read the revised report. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

Omission and ordinary-polite dialogue

The text can be omitted when already visible or named: อ่านหรือยัง — อ่านแล้ว. That short answer does not mean อ่าน has become intransitive; the object remains understood.

คุณอ่านร่างประกาศฉบับใหม่หรือยังคะ

khun an rang prakat chabap mai rue yang kha

Have you read the new draft announcement yet? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

อ่านแล้วครับ แต่ย่อหน้าสุดท้ายยังไม่ชัด

an laeo khrap tae yo na sutthai yang mai chat

I have, but the last paragraph still isn't clear. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; text omitted recoverably)

ช่วยอ่านออกเสียงส่วนนั้นให้ฟังได้ไหมคะ

chuai an ok siang suan nan hai fang dai mai kha

Could you read that section aloud for me? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

ได้ครับ เดี๋ยวผมอ่านช้า ๆ

dai khrap diao phom an cha cha

Certainly. I'll read it slowly. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Adding เป็น before the reading predicate

❌ ตอนนี้ผมเป็นอ่านหนังสือครับ

Incorrect—อ่าน is already an action predicate; เป็น is not a progressive auxiliary.

✅ ตอนนี้ผมกำลังอ่านหนังสืออยู่ครับ

ton ni phom kamlang an nangsue yu khrap

I'm reading a book right now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Reversing the established aloud expression

❌ นักเรียนอ่านเสียงออกหน้าชั้นค่ะ

Incorrect order for ‘read aloud’; the established expression is อ่านออกเสียง.

✅ นักเรียนอ่านออกเสียงหน้าชั้นค่ะ

nakrian an ok siang na chan kha

The student reads aloud at the front of the class. (ordinary polite instructional report, female speaker)

3. Dropping the result complement in a decoding failure

❌ ลายมือนี้อ่านไม่ครับ

Incorrect—ไม่ needs the result complement ออก for the intended decoding failure.

✅ ลายมือนี้อ่านไม่ออกครับ

lai mue ni an mai ok khrap

I can't make out this handwriting. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; decoding failure)

4. Copying English number placement

❌ ฉันอ่านหนึ่งหนังสือก่อนนอนค่ะ

Incorrect Thai noun-quantity order and missing classifier.

✅ ก่อนนอนฉันอ่านหนังสือหนึ่งเล่มค่ะ

kon non chan an nangsue nueng lem kha

Before bed I read one book. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

5. Moving plain negation after the text

❌ เขาอ่านข่าวตอนเช้าไม่ครับ

Incorrect—plain negation precedes อ่าน.

✅ เขาไม่อ่านข่าวตอนเช้าครับ

khao mai an khao ton chao khrap

He doesn't read the news in the morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • อ่าน + text is the core frame; อ่าน...จบแล้ว explicitly presents completion.
  • อ่านออกเสียง means read aloud; อ่านออก/อ่านไม่ออก present successful or failed decoding.
  • อ่านสถานการณ์, อ่านใจ, and อ่านเกม are conventional interpretation extensions with their own registers.
  • อ่าน never conjugates. Time, aspect, result predicates, negation, and recoverable omission build the clause around it.
