Schools, Universities, and Institutional Titles

Thai education language is organized around levels, roles, and institutions. English student, teacher, principal, and president do not map one-to-one onto Thai because นักเรียน, นักศึกษา, ครู, อาจารย์, ผู้อำนวยการ, and อธิการบดี select different settings and relationships. The title chosen in a corridor conversation may also differ from the full title printed in a formal notice.

School and university levels

The central institutional sequence is ระดับประถมศึกษา primary, ระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนต้น lower secondary, ระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย upper secondary, and ระดับอุดมศึกษา higher education. In everyday speech and school notices, grades are often abbreviated with ป. for ประถมศึกษาปีที่ and ม. for มัธยมศึกษาปีที่.

ลูกสาวของผมเรียนอยู่ชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่ 4 ครับ

luk sao khong phom rian yu chan prathom sueksa pi thi si khrap

My daughter is in Primary 4. (father speaking politely; full level name)

พรุ่งนี้นักเรียนชั้น ม.2 มีสอบวิทยาศาสตร์คาบแรก

phrung ni nak rian chan mo song mi sop witthayasat khap raek

Tomorrow the Mathayom 2 students have a science test in the first period. (ordinary school announcement)

พี่ชายกำลังเรียนปริญญาตรีปีที่ 3 ที่มหาวิทยาลัยในเชียงใหม่

phi chai kamlang rian parinya tri pi thi sam thi mahawitthayalai nai chiang mai

My older brother is in the third year of a bachelor's degree at a university in Chiang Mai. (neutral conversation)

The Thai verb เรียน does not become past or present. กำลัง makes the study ongoing, while พรุ่งนี้ locates the test in the future. ปีที่ 3 is an ordinal year; 3 ปี would mean a duration of three years.

นักเรียน, นักศึกษา, and นิสิต

นักเรียน is the ordinary term for a school pupil. นักศึกษา is the broadly applicable term for a tertiary student. นิสิต is an institutional term used by some universities for their students; it should not be imposed on students at every university.

นักเรียนใหม่ต้องรับบัตรประจำตัวที่ห้องธุรการ

nak rian mai tong rap bat pracham tua thi hong thurakan

New pupils must collect their ID cards from the administrative office. (formal school instruction)

นักศึกษาชั้นปีที่ 1 ลงทะเบียนเรียนผ่านระบบออนไลน์ได้ตั้งแต่วันจันทร์

nak sueksa chan pi thi nueng long thabian rian phan rabop onlai dai tangtae wan chan

First-year university students can register online from Monday. (formal university information)

มหาวิทยาลัยบางแห่งใช้คำว่านิสิตในประกาศของสถาบัน

mahawitthayalai bang haeng chai kham wa nisit nai prakat khong sathaban

Some universities use the term nisit in institutional announcements. (qualified formal observation)

English student leaves the educational level open. Thai often encodes it in the noun itself. นัก- forms a person noun associated with an activity or field, but the resulting vocabulary is lexical: learners should remember actual institutional terms, not attach นัก freely to any verb.

ครู and อาจารย์ are roles and forms of address

At school, ครู is the core teacher term and a natural respectful form of address. At a university, อาจารย์ is the usual teaching role and address. อาจารย์ can also respectfully refer to an expert or mentor outside a university, so it is broader than English professor. This is part of Thai's wider system of role-title reference.

ครูมะลิคะ หนูส่งใบงานไว้บนโต๊ะแล้วค่ะ

khru mali kha nu song bai ngan wai bon to laeo kha

Teacher Mali, I left the worksheet on your desk. (female school pupil; respectful address and statement)

อาจารย์ครับ ผมขอเลื่อนเวลานัดเป็นบ่ายสองได้ไหมครับ

achan khrap phom kho luean wela nat pen bai song dai mai khrap

Professor, could I move our appointment to two in the afternoon? (male university student; polite request)

The first speaker uses หนู, a common younger-person self-reference in an appropriate school relationship, plus attention คะ and statement ค่ะ. The second uses ผม and ครับ. These examples do not imply that every learner must use the same pronoun: age, gender presentation, familiarity, and institutional culture matter.

💡
Do not translate every อาจารย์ as “professor.” It is the normal address for a university instructor regardless of whether that person holds the academic rank ศาสตราจารย์.

Administrative and academic titles

The head of a school is commonly ผู้อำนวยการโรงเรียน; speech often shortens the address to ผู้อำนวยการ or ผอ. where the role is known. A university has an อธิการบดี rector/president, a faculty has a คณบดี dean, and a department may have a หัวหน้าภาควิชา department chair/head.

Academic ranks include ศาสตราจารย์ professor, รองศาสตราจารย์ associate professor, and ผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์ assistant professor. ดร. indicates a doctoral qualification in ordinary naming practice; it is not itself one of those academic ranks.

ผู้อำนวยการโรงเรียนจะประชุมกับผู้ปกครองเวลา 15.30 น.

phu amnuai kan rongrian cha prachum kap phu pokkhrong wela sip ha nalika sam sip nathi

The school director will meet with parents at 3:30 p.m. (formal school schedule)

คณบดีคณะศิลปศาสตร์เป็นประธานเปิดการประชุม

khanabodi khana sinlapasat pen prathan poet kan prachum

The dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts presided over the opening of the meeting. (formal institutional report)

เรียน รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.กมล ใจดี ดิฉันขอส่งเอกสารฉบับแก้ไขตามที่อาจารย์แนะนำค่ะ

rian rong satsatrachan doktoe kamon chai di dichan kho song ekkasan chabap kae khai tam thi achan naenam kha

Dear Associate Professor Dr. Kamon Jaidee, I am submitting the revised document as you advised. (female writer; formal academic email opening)

In the email, formal salutation เรียน comes before the addressee's title and name. The body then uses relational อาจารย์ rather than repeating the full rank. This is efficient reference management, not inconsistency.

Institution names put the type first

Thai institution compounds generally begin with the institutional head: โรงเรียนบ้านคลองใหม่, มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่, คณะวิทยาศาสตร์, ภาควิชาภาษาไทย. English often places the proper modifier before School or University, so direct order transfer fails.

ภาควิชาภาษาไทยอยู่ในคณะมนุษยศาสตร์ อาคาร 2

phak wicha phasa thai yu nai khana manutthayasat akhan song

The Thai Department is in the Faculty of Humanities, Building 2. (neutral campus information)

อาคาร 2 is a label, “Building 2,” not the ordinary counting construction อาคาร 2 หลัง “two buildings.” Numbers following institutional nouns can therefore name a unit rather than count it; context and the absence of a classifier distinguish the readings.

An authentic-style university notice

The notice below is original:

ประกาศคณะศิลปศาสตร์ เรื่อง การปฐมนิเทศนักศึกษาชั้นปีที่ 1

prakat khana sinlapasat rueang kan pathommanithet nak sueksa chan pi thi nueng

Faculty of Liberal Arts announcement: Orientation for first-year students. (formal heading)

ขอให้นักศึกษาลงทะเบียนเวลา 8.30 น. ณ ห้องประชุมอาคาร 3 และนำบัตรนักศึกษามาด้วย

kho hai nak sueksa long thabian wela paet nalika sam sip nathi na hong prachum akhan sam lae nam bat nak sueksa ma duai

Students are requested to register at 8:30 a.m. in the meeting room of Building 3 and bring their student ID cards. (formal institutional instruction)

The heading is a noun-phrase stack: issuing unit → เรื่อง topic → nominalized event. It needs no English-style The Faculty announces that.... ขอให้ frames an official request, formal locative marks the venue, and ด้วย adds the card requirement. There is no ครับ/ค่ะ because the institution, not a gendered individual, is speaking.

Language-focused comparison

Speaker role and settingPreferred formRegister logic
School pupil to teacherครูคะ / ครูครับRole title plus attention particle; relationship is explicit.
University student to instructorอาจารย์คะ / อาจารย์ครับNatural address; does not assert professorial rank.
Formal letter to ranked academicเรียน รองศาสตราจารย์...Full verified rank and name in the salutation.
Institutional noticeขอให้นักศึกษา...Role noun and impersonal request; no conversational particle.

Respect means verifying a person's actual title, not maximizing titles. It also means avoiding assumptions that all schools or universities use identical student labels, abbreviations, pronouns, or interactional customs.

Common Mistakes

1. Calling every university student นักเรียน in a formal notice

❌ นักเรียนมหาวิทยาลัยชั้นปีที่ 1 ต้องลงทะเบียนวันนี้

Wrong institutional category for the intended formal university notice—use นักศึกษา (or the institution's verified นิสิต).

✅ นักศึกษาชั้นปีที่ 1 ต้องยืนยันการลงทะเบียนภายในวันนี้

nak sueksa chan pi thi nueng tong yuenyan kan long thabian phainai wan ni

First-year students must confirm registration by today. (formal university instruction)

2. Treating อาจารย์ as proof of professorial rank

❌ อาจารย์ทุกคนเป็นศาสตราจารย์

Incorrect equation—อาจารย์ is a teaching role/address, while ศาสตราจารย์ is a specific academic rank.

✅ อาจารย์ท่านนี้ดำรงตำแหน่งผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์

achan than ni damrong tamnaeng phu chuai satsatrachan

This instructor holds the rank of assistant professor. (formal, precise distinction)

3. Reversing an institution compound

❌ เชียงใหม่มหาวิทยาลัยเปิดรับสมัครแล้ว

Incorrect English-influenced order for the institution name.

✅ มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่เปิดรับสมัครโครงการใหม่แล้ว

mahawitthayalai chiang mai poet rap samak khrongkan mai laeo

Chiang Mai University has opened applications for a new program. (standard institution-name order)

4. Adding เป็น before an activity predicate

❌ น้องเป็นเรียนอยู่ชั้น ม.5

Incorrect copula transfer—เรียน is already the predicate.

✅ น้องเรียนอยู่ชั้น ม.5 และกำลังเตรียมสอบปลายภาค

nong rian yu chan mo ha lae kamlang triam sop plai phak

My younger sibling is in Mathayom 5 and is preparing for final exams. (natural current-state description)

Key Takeaways

  • Match นักเรียน, นักศึกษา, and institution-specific นิสิต to educational setting.
  • Use ครู/อาจารย์ as relationship-sensitive address terms without confusing อาจารย์ with academic rank.
  • Put the institutional type first: มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่, คณะมนุษยศาสตร์, ภาควิชาภาษาไทย.
  • Let formal notices use nominal headings, ขอให้, role nouns, and no conversational final particle.
