Thai forms a productive ordinal by placing ที่ before an ordinary cardinal: ที่หนึ่ง “first,” ที่สอง “second,” ที่สาม “third.” Unlike English, Thai does not create special endings such as -st, -nd, or -th. Once you can build a cardinal, you can build its ordinal.
Inside a full count-noun phrase, however, the classifier normally comes before the ordinal: หนังสือเล่มที่สอง “the second book.” This order shows the underlying logic. The classifier first identifies a countable member, and ที่ + number locates that member in an ordered sequence.
The productive pattern
| Function | Frame | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| bare ordinal | ที่ + cardinal | ที่สาม | third |
| person | noun + คน + ที่ + cardinal | ผู้สมัครคนที่สาม | the third applicant |
| book | noun + เล่ม + ที่ + cardinal | หนังสือเล่มที่สอง | the second book |
| building | noun + หลัง + ที่ + cardinal | บ้านหลังที่สี่ | the fourth house |
| occurrence | ครั้ง + ที่ + cardinal | ครั้งที่ห้า | the fifth time |
ผู้สมัครคนที่สามยังมาไม่ถึงค่ะ
phusamak khon thi sam yang ma mai thueng kha
The third applicant has not arrived yet. (polite, female speaker)
ผมชอบหนังสือเล่มที่สองมากกว่าเล่มแรกครับ
phom chop nangsue lem thi song mak kwa lem raek khrap
I prefer the second book to the first one. (polite, male speaker; book noun omitted in the second phrase)
The ordinal follows the classifier, whereas an exact cardinal count precedes it. Compare หนังสือสองเล่ม “two books” with หนังสือเล่มที่สอง “the second book.” The first gives set size; the second selects one member by rank.
Minimal contrast: two books versus the second book
ฉันยืมหนังสือสองเล่มค่ะ
chan yuem nangsue song lem kha
I borrowed two books. (polite, female speaker; cardinal count)
ฉันยืมหนังสือเล่มที่สองค่ะ
chan yuem nangsue lem thi song kha
I borrowed the second book. (polite, female speaker; ordinal selection)
English signals the contrast mainly through two versus second and an article. Thai signals it through both ที่ and classifier order. There is no separate equivalent of the: an understood ordered set makes the ordinal referent identifiable.
The same contrast appears with people:
พนักงานสองคนขอเปลี่ยนกะครับ
phanakngan song khon kho plian ka khrap
Two employees asked to change shifts. (polite, male speaker; quantity)
พนักงานคนที่สองขอเปลี่ยนกะครับ
phanakngan khon thi song kho plian ka khrap
The second employee asked to change shifts. (polite, male speaker; position in an ordered group)
Building larger ordinals
The cardinal after ที่ keeps its normal internal form. One alone is หนึ่ง, so “first” is ที่หนึ่ง, not ที่เอ็ด. Eleven is สิบเอ็ด, so “eleventh” is ที่สิบเอ็ด. Twenty-one is ยี่สิบเอ็ด, producing ที่ยี่สิบเอ็ด.
| Position | Cardinal | Ordinal | RTGS |
|---|---|---|---|
The Thai team finished the competition in eleventh place. (formal sports report, female speaker)
กรุณาตรวจเอกสารฉบับที่ยี่สิบเอ็ดอีกครั้งครับ
karuna truat ekkasan chabap thi yi sip et ik khrang khrap
Please check document number twenty-one again. (formal workplace request, male speaker)
The final เอ็ด rule operates inside the cardinal; ordinal ที่ does not cancel it.
แรก and ที่หนึ่ง are related, not interchangeable
แรก means “first/initial” and is extremely common after a noun or classifier-like unit: วันแรก “the first day,” ครั้งแรก “the first time,” เล่มแรก “the first volume.” It often presents the beginning of an experience or sequence. ที่หนึ่ง is more explicitly numerical and is common in rankings, enumerated alternatives, and labeled positions.
วันแรกที่เชียงใหม่ฝนตกทั้งวันค่ะ
wan raek thi chiang mai fon tok thang wan kha
It rained all day on my first day in Chiang Mai. (polite, female speaker; initial day of an experience)
นี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่ผมนั่งรถไฟกลางคืนครับ
ni pen khrang raek thi phom nang rotfai klang khuen khrap
This is my first time taking an overnight train. (polite, male speaker)
เธอได้ที่หนึ่งในการแข่งขันวาดภาพค่ะ
thoe dai thi nueng nai kan khaengkhan wat phap kha
She won first place in the drawing competition. (polite, female speaker; ranking)
In ได้ที่หนึ่ง, ที่หนึ่ง functions as a rank expression. ครั้งที่หนึ่ง is possible when a document, experiment, or procedure explicitly numbers repetitions, but ครั้งแรก is the natural everyday way to say “the first time.”
Sequence position versus a label
Thai distinguishes an item's place in a sequence from a number used merely as its name. ห้องที่สอง is the second room encountered or mentioned. ห้องสอง or ห้องหมายเลขสอง identifies room 2; it need not be second in physical order.
ให้ไปที่ห้องหมายเลขสอง ไม่ใช่ห้องที่สองทางซ้ายค่ะ
hai pai thi hong mailek song mai chai hong thi song thang sai kha
Go to room number two, not the second room on the left. (polite, female instruction; label contrasted with ordinal position)
สำนักงานอยู่ชั้นที่ห้าของอาคารครับ
samnakngan yu chan thi ha khong akhan khrap
The office is on the fifth floor of the building. (polite, male speaker; ordered floor)
On signs and in rapid directions, Thai often shortens ชั้นที่ห้า to ชั้นห้า because the floor number is treated as a conventional label. The full ที่ form makes ordinal structure explicit and is the safest model for productive use.
Omission after context supplies the noun
Once the noun is recoverable, Thai can retain just the classifier plus ordinal: คนที่สอง, เล่มที่สาม, ฉบับที่สี่. Dropping the classifier as well may make the referent unclear.
สองเล่มนี้เอาเล่มไหนคะ
song lem ni ao lem nai kha
Which of these two books do you want? (polite, female question)
เอาเล่มที่สองครับ ตัวหนังสือบนปกอ่านง่ายกว่า
ao lem thi song khrap tua nangsue bon pok an ngai kwa
The second one, please; the text on its cover is easier to read. (polite, male reply; noun omitted, classifier retained)
Thai omits the subject and head noun because the books remain visually and conversationally available. English inserts one; Thai lets the classifier carry the individuating function.
Dates and numbered occurrences
The fixed sequence วันที่ + cardinal names a calendar date, while ครั้งที่ + cardinal numbers an occurrence. These look like ordinary ordinal phrases but belong to different practical systems.
ประชุมครั้งที่สามเลื่อนไปเป็นวันที่ยี่สิบเอ็ดค่ะ
prachum khrang thi sam luean pai pen wan thi yi sip et kha
The third meeting has been moved to the twenty-first. (formal workplace update, female speaker)
The date construction is developed on the dates and year-order page; counting occurrences is covered under ครั้ง.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
สัมภาษณ์ผู้สมัครคนที่เท่าไรแล้วคะ
samphat phusamak khon thi thaorai laeo kha
Which numbered applicant are we interviewing now? (polite, female question)
คนที่ห้าครับ อีกสองคนก็เสร็จแล้ว
khon thi ha khrap ik song khon ko set laeo
The fifth. Two more people and we'll be finished. (polite, male reply; applicant noun omitted)
Common Mistakes
1. Copying cardinal classifier order
❌ หนังสือที่สองเล่มอยู่บนโต๊ะค่ะ
Incorrect for ‘the second book’ — the classifier must precede the ordinal.
✅ หนังสือเล่มที่สองอยู่บนโต๊ะค่ะ
nangsue lem thi song yu bon to kha
The second book is on the table. (polite, female speaker)
2. Using เอ็ด for first
❌ เขาได้ที่เอ็ดครับ
Incorrect — one by itself is หนึ่ง; เอ็ด occurs only at the end of a multi-digit cardinal.
✅ เขาได้ที่หนึ่งครับ
khao dai thi nueng khrap
He came first. (polite, male speaker)
3. Omitting ที่ from a productive ordinal
❌ ผู้สมัครคนสามยังไม่มาค่ะ
Incorrect for ‘the third applicant’ — add ที่ before the position number.
✅ ผู้สมัครคนที่สามยังไม่มาค่ะ
phusamak khon thi sam yang mai ma kha
The third applicant has not arrived. (polite, female speaker)
4. Putting แรก before the occurrence noun
❌ นี่เป็นแรกครั้งที่ผมมาไทยครับ
Incorrect English-like order — แรก follows ครั้ง in the ordinary first-time expression.
✅ นี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่ผมมาไทยครับ
ni pen khrang raek thi phom ma thai khrap
This is my first time coming to Thailand. (polite, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
Build ordinals with ที่ + cardinal. With count nouns, put the classifier first: noun + classifier + ที่ + number. Keep ordinary cardinal forms such as สิบเอ็ด and ยี่สิบเอ็ด inside the ordinal. Use แรก naturally for an initial day, item, or experience, and distinguish sequence position from a numeric label.
