When Final One Is เอ็ด | Thai Grammar

In careful standard Thai, a cardinal of two or more digits whose final digit is 1 uses เอ็ด for that final one. The familiar examples are สิบเอ็ด “11” and ยี่สิบเอ็ด “21,” but the rule does not depend on an immediately preceding สิบ. It also gives หนึ่งร้อยเอ็ด “101,” หนึ่งพันเอ็ด “1,001,” and สองพันห้าร้อยเอ็ด “2,501.” Silent zero places do not block เอ็ด.

By contrast, the number 1 by itself is หนึ่ง. A coefficient one before a place word is also หนึ่ง, as in หนึ่งร้อย “100.” After a decimal point or in a digit-by-digit code, 1 is read หนึ่ง because those digits are not the final ones position of one compound cardinal.

The minimal contrast

One item and eleven items put “one” in different structures.

มีพัสดุหนึ่งชิ้นค่ะ

mi phatsadu nueng chin kha

There is one parcel. (polite, female speaker; standalone one is หนึ่ง)

มีพัสดุสิบเอ็ดชิ้นครับ

mi phatsadu sip et chin khrap

There are eleven parcels. (polite, male speaker; final one in a multi-digit cardinal is เอ็ด)

The classifier ชิ้น follows the complete number in both examples. The noun and classifier do not trigger เอ็ด; the internal structure of the cardinal does.

Ignore the written zeros and ask one question: “Is this 1 the final digit of one cardinal with at least two digits?” If yes, the careful standard uses เอ็ด.

เอ็ด after an audible tens component

The first cases learners meet have สิบ immediately before the final digit: 11, 21, 31, and so on. Twenty still begins with ยี่, while all these compounds end with เอ็ด.

ห้องนี้มีโต๊ะยี่สิบเอ็ดตัวค่ะ

The full number remains before the classifier. เอ็ด never replaces the classifier and never moves after it.

เอ็ด after hundreds and thousands

The careful rule extends beyond compounds with an audible tens word. Values 101 and 1,001 have zero tens, but their final one is still เอ็ด.

โรงแรมนี้มีห้องพักหนึ่งร้อยเอ็ดห้องครับ

rongraem ni mi hong phak nueng roi et hong khrap

This hotel has 101 guest rooms. (polite, male speaker; zero tens place is silent)

โรงพิมพ์ส่งใบรับรองหนึ่งพันเอ็ดฉบับค่ะ

rongphim song bai raprong nueng phan et chabap kha

The printing house sent 1,001 certificates. (polite, female speaker; two zero places are silent)

ยอดชำระทั้งหมดสองพันห้าร้อยเอ็ดบาทครับ

yot chamra thangmot song phan ha roi et bat khrap

The total payment is 2,501 baht. (polite, male speaker)

In the last number, the hundreds place is audible but tens is zero. Final เอ็ด still represents the ones digit. Hundreds and thousands explains the silent-place system.

Leading หนึ่ง may be omitted in careful forms such as ร้อยเอ็ด and พันเอ็ด, but that is a separate leading-coefficient choice. It does not change final เอ็ด.

เอ็ด at a ล้าน boundary

Thai reads large values in six-digit groups joined by ล้าน. A multi-digit group ending in one uses เอ็ด even when ล้าน follows it. Thus the leading group 501 in 501,741,222 is ห้าร้อยเอ็ดล้าน.

ล้าน by itself represents the leading value one million and therefore can appear as หนึ่งล้าน, not เอ็ดล้าน. เอ็ด arises when a pronounced multi-digit block or the complete cardinal ends in one.

Where เอ็ด is impossible

Use หนึ่ง for one alone, a coefficient before ร้อย/พัน/หมื่น/แสน/ล้าน, every 1 after จุด, and a 1 read as an independent digit in a code.

ขอถุงหนึ่งใบครับ

The written digits may look identical to a cardinal ending, but grammatical function controls the reading. Decimal and code digits preserve their individual identities.

Do not decide from typography alone. The same sequence can be a cardinal quantity, a decimal fraction, or a code; only the cardinal uses positional เอ็ด.

Careful norm and real spoken variation

The Royal Society's careful rule uses final เอ็ด for every multi-digit cardinal ending in 1, explicitly including 101, 1,001, and extremely large values. In (informal) modern Central Thai, speakers sometimes say final หนึ่ง after hundreds or thousands. That variation should be recognized, but learners need one reliable production norm: use เอ็ด in careful cardinal reading.

One specialized exception has a different purpose. In (specialized naval communications), หนึ่ง may replace เอ็ด to keep the sound distinct from เจ็ด over noisy channels. That safety convention is not ordinary Bangkok counting and should not be generalized.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ในรายการมีสินค้าทั้งหมดกี่ชิ้นคะ

nai raikan mi sinkha thangmot ki chin kha

How many products are on the list in total? (polite, female question)

สองร้อยเอ็ดชิ้นครับ ตรวจครบแล้วหนึ่งร้อยชิ้น

The answer omits the recoverable noun สินค้า but retains classifier ชิ้น. The first number ends in one and uses เอ็ด; the second ends at the hundreds place and uses หนึ่ง as its coefficient.

Common Mistakes

1. Building 111 with ordinary หนึ่ง at the end

❌ มีผู้ตอบหนึ่งร้อยสิบหนึ่งคนค่ะ

Incorrect cardinal formation — final one is เอ็ด.

2. Pronouncing zero-value places before final one

Incorrect — silent zero places are not spoken inside an ordinary cardinal.

3. Using เอ็ด for one item

Incorrect — one by itself is หนึ่ง.

4. Using เอ็ด after a decimal point

Incorrect — fractional digits after จุด are read separately with หนึ่ง.
