Decimals and จุด | Thai Grammar

Thai reads a decimal in two different modes on either side of จุด “point.” The integer part is an ordinary cardinal: 51 begins ห้าสิบเอ็ด. After จุด, every written digit is read separately: 0 is ศูนย์, 1 is หนึ่ง, and 2 is สอง. Therefore 51.08 is ห้าสิบเอ็ดจุดศูนย์แปด.

This split explains three important facts. Zero after the point must be retained, fractional 1 never becomes เอ็ด, and fractional 2 never becomes ยี่. The digits after จุด preserve their positions rather than forming a new whole cardinal.

The reading frame

Read integer cardinal + จุด + separate fractional digits. The RTGS line spaces the spoken components; Thai normally writes the number word continuously.

Draw a boundary at จุด. Apply ordinary cardinal rules only on the left; switch to digit-by-digit reading on the right.

Minimal contrast: 1.5 versus 1.05

The zero immediately after จุด has place value. Omitting it changes hundredths into tenths.

English speakers may hear both written values as beginning “one point five” if they overlook the zero. Thai, like English mathematical reading, says every written fractional position. จุด does not mean “and”; it announces a shift in reading strategy.

หนึ่ง, เอ็ด, สอง, and ยี่ across the point

The integer part follows all normal compound rules. Thus 21.01 begins ยี่สิบเอ็ด, and 101.21 begins หนึ่งร้อยเอ็ด. After จุด, however, 1 is หนึ่ง and 2 is สอง because each is an isolated digit.

The final เอ็ด page explains why silent zero places on the integer side do not prevent เอ็ด. จุด creates the boundary that does prevent it.

Trailing zeros and stated precision

Numerically, 2.5 and 2.50 have the same value. When reading a written figure exactly, however, สองจุดห้าศูนย์ preserves the displayed trailing zero. In measurements and data, that zero can signal precision; dropping it may discard information about how the value was recorded.

In casual conversation, a speaker may say the shorter equivalent if written precision is irrelevant. That is a pragmatic shortening, not a different way to read the displayed string exactly.

When you are reading a screen, table, or measurement aloud, pronounce every digit shown after จุด—including final zeros. When merely stating a value conversationally, use the precision the context requires.

Decimals with measures

Decimal quantities naturally combine with divisible measures: kilograms, liters, meters, temperatures, and other continuous scales. Put the measure unit after the complete decimal.

ขวดนี้จุน้ำได้หนึ่งจุดสองห้าลิตรค่ะ

khuat ni chu nam dai nueng chut song ha lit kha

This bottle holds 1.25 liters of water. (polite, female speaker; measure unit after decimal)

For indivisible count nouns, a decimal count is usually conceptually wrong: people do not normally count “1.5 books.” Thai instead names a measure, portion, percentage, or fraction appropriate to the situation. Classifier choice and measure choice package what kind of unit is being quantified.

Decimals are not money notation or codes

The general decimal reading of 10.50 is สิบจุดห้าศูนย์. When the figure is explicitly currency, Thai commonly reads the named units instead: สิบบาทห้าสิบสตางค์. That is a money construction, not an exception to the mathematics of จุด.

Version numbers, model numbers, and codes may also follow local digit-string conventions rather than numerical magnitude. Before choosing a reading, decide whether the notation expresses a measured decimal value or merely labels an item.

ราคาสุทธิคือสิบบาทห้าสิบสตางค์ค่ะ

Spoken and written conventions

Modern Thai writes decimals with an ASCII full stop in ordinary data. In prose teaching the spoken form, the word is จุด. Thai digits may occur in formal or traditional settings, but digit shape does not change the reading rule.

Thai verbs remain uninflected around measurements. Words such as เพิ่ม “increase,” ลด “decrease,” and วัดได้ “measure at” express the relation; the decimal phrase itself does not trigger agreement.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

พัสดุกล่องนี้หนักเท่าไรคะ

phatsadu klong ni nak thaorai kha

How much does this parcel weigh? (polite, female question)

หนึ่งจุดแปดศูนย์กิโลกรัมครับ ต้องปัดเป็นหนึ่งจุดแปดไหม

nueng chut paet sun kilokram khrap tong pat pen nueng chut paet mai

1.80 kilograms. Should it be rounded to 1.8? (polite, male reply; written precision contrasted with shorter value)

The second question omits an additional ครับ because one polite marker already frames the turn naturally. No subject pronoun is needed; the parcel and data entry remain recoverable.

Common Mistakes

1. Reading the fractional string as a whole cardinal

❌ สองจุดสามสิบห้า

Incorrect for 2.35 — digits after จุด are read separately.

✅ ค่านี้คือสองจุดสามห้าค่ะ

kha ni khue song chut sam ha kha

This value is 2.35. (polite, female speaker)

2. Dropping a zero after จุด

❌ อ่านหนึ่งจุดศูนย์ห้าเป็นหนึ่งจุดห้า

Incorrect — 1.05 and 1.5 are different values.

✅ ค่าที่ถูกต้องคือหนึ่งจุดศูนย์ห้าครับ

3. Using เอ็ด after the point

❌ ผลคือสี่จุดศูนย์เอ็ดค่ะ

Incorrect — isolated fractional 1 is หนึ่ง.

✅ ผลคือสี่จุดศูนย์หนึ่งค่ะ

4. Using ยี่ for fractional digit two

❌ เครื่องวัดแสดงห้าจุดยี่ครับ

Incorrect — ยี่ belongs to the tens formation ยี่สิบ, not an isolated digit.

✅ เครื่องวัดแสดงห้าจุดสองครับ

5. Treating a currency amount as an obligatory จุด reading

❌ ค่าน้ำสิบบาทจุดห้าสิบสตางค์ค่ะ

Incorrect — จุด does not go between named baht and satang units.

✅ ค่าน้ำสิบบาทห้าสิบสตางค์ค่ะ
