Fractions with ส่วน

Thai mathematical fractions are built in the same conceptual order as the written fraction: name the numerator, say ส่วน, then name the denominator. The full classroom form adds เศษ before the numerator, so 3/4 is เศษสามส่วนสี่. In less formal speech, สามส่วนสี่ is often enough because the fractional context is already clear.

English changes the denominator into an ordinal-like word—third, fourth, fifth—and puts the plural on it in three fourths. Thai does neither. Both numbers remain ordinary cardinals, and ส่วน marks the boundary between them. This regular structure works with denominators far beyond the few special fractions that English names individually.

The productive fraction frame

The full (academic/classroom) frame is:

เศษ + numerator + ส่วน + denominator

โจทย์ข้อนี้ให้บวกเศษหนึ่งส่วนสามกับเศษหนึ่งส่วนหกค่ะ

chot kho ni hai buak set nueng suan sam kap set nueng suan hok kha

This problem asks you to add one third and one sixth. (formal classroom instruction, female speaker)

ผลสำรวจพบว่านักเรียนสามส่วนสี่เดินทางด้วยรถสาธารณะครับ

phon samruat phop wa nakrian sam suan si doen thang duai rot satharana khrap

The survey found that three quarters of the students travel by public transport. (formal report, male speaker; shortened fraction in clear context)

The initial เศษ identifies the upper number as the numerator; it is not the English word over. ส่วน introduces the denominator, which tells how many equal parts make one whole. There is no classifier between the two numbers.

💡
Read the denominator as an ordinary Thai cardinal. The pattern does not change for large denominators: 1/11 is เศษหนึ่งส่วนสิบเอ็ด and 21/100 is เศษยี่สิบเอ็ดส่วนร้อย.

Why equal parts matter

ส่วน can mean a part or share outside mathematics too. In a fraction, however, the denominator assumes that the whole has been divided into equal parts. เศษสามส่วนสี่ means three of four equal parts, not merely three pieces of any size.

แบ่งเค้กเป็นแปดส่วนเท่า ๆ กันนะคะ

baeng khek pen paet suan thao thao kan na kha

Please divide the cake into eight equal parts. (polite, female instruction)

เด็ก ๆ กินเค้กไปห้าส่วนแปดแล้วครับ

dek dek kin khek pai ha suan paet laeo khrap

The children have eaten five eighths of the cake. (polite, male speaker)

The repeated form เท่า กัน makes equality explicit. Thai verbs do not change to encode past time; ไป...แล้ว presents the consumed amount as completed and context supplies the time.

ครึ่ง for one half

The everyday word ครึ่ง “half” is much more natural than a formal fraction when speakers divide time, food, distance, or a container. ครึ่งหนึ่ง emphasizes one half of an identified whole; bare ครึ่ง combines directly with a unit or classifier.

ขอกาแฟแค่ครึ่งแก้วค่ะ

kho kafae khae khrueng kaeo kha

Only half a glass of coffee, please. (polite, female speaker)

เราใช้เงินไปเกือบครึ่งหนึ่งของงบประมาณแล้วครับ

rao chai ngoen pai kueap khrueng nueng khong ngoppraman laeo khrap

We have used almost half of the budget. (polite, male workplace report)

ประชุมไปได้ครึ่งชั่วโมงอินเทอร์เน็ตก็ดับค่ะ

prachum pai dai khrueng chua mong intoenet ko dap kha

Half an hour into the meeting, the internet went down. (polite, female speaker)

These are measure phrases, not hidden English articles. In ครึ่งแก้ว, แก้ว packages the serving; in ครึ่งชั่วโมง, ชั่วโมง names the time unit. For more on unit phrases, see metric and everyday measures.

Fractions of an identified set: ของ and ใน

To say “a fraction of X,” Thai often places ของ + whole after the fraction. In statistics and subset descriptions, numerator + ใน + denominator is also common: สามในสี่ของผู้ตอบ literally selects three in every four respondents.

รายได้หนึ่งส่วนสามของร้านมาจากการส่งอาหารค่ะ

raidai nueng suan sam khong ran ma chak kan song ahan kha

One third of the shop's income comes from food delivery. (polite, female business statement)

ผู้ตอบสามในสี่เห็นด้วยกับข้อเสนอครับ

phu top sam nai si hen duai kap kho sanoe khrap

Three out of four respondents agree with the proposal. (formal report, male speaker)

สามส่วนสี่ names the fraction itself; สามในสี่ highlights a ratio within a set. They can describe the same numerical proportion, but the second is particularly natural with people, cases, or survey responses.

Mixed numbers

The conventional (academic/classroom) reading of a mixed number places the whole number first, then เศษ + numerator + ส่วน + denominator: หนึ่งเศษสามส่วนสี่ “1 3/4.” The เศษ here begins the fractional remainder; Thai does not insert an equivalent of English and.

คำตอบคือสองเศษหนึ่งส่วนห้าค่ะ

khamtop khue song set nueng suan ha kha

The answer is two and one fifth. (formal classroom speech, female speaker)

ไม้แผ่นนี้ยาวหนึ่งเมตรครึ่งครับ

mai phaen ni yao nueng met khrueng khrap

This board is one and a half meters long. (polite, male speaker; everyday measurement rather than a formal mixed-fraction reading)

Everyday measurement usually prefers a unit-based expression such as หนึ่งเมตรครึ่ง, สองชั่วโมงครึ่ง, or ข้าวหนึ่งจานครึ่ง. Use the mixed-number formula when reading notation or doing mathematics; use the measure construction when describing an ordinary quantity.

💡
Do not force the classroom form into every conversation. เศษหนึ่งส่วนสอง is exact mathematical terminology; ครึ่ง is the normal everyday choice for half a serving, half an hour, or half of a known whole.

หนึ่ง, เอ็ด, and ยี่ inside fractions

Each numerator and denominator is built as its own cardinal. One alone is หนึ่ง, but a multi-digit component ending in 1 takes standard final เอ็ด. A tens component beginning with 2 uses ยี่สิบ.

เศษหนึ่งส่วนสิบเอ็ดมีค่าน้อยกว่าเศษหนึ่งส่วนสิบค่ะ

set nueng suan sip et mi kha noi kwa set nueng suan sip kha

One eleventh is less than one tenth. (formal classroom statement, female speaker)

เศษยี่สิบเอ็ดส่วนร้อยเขียนเป็นทศนิยมได้ศูนย์จุดสองหนึ่งครับ

set yi sip et suan roi khian pen thotsaniyom dai sun chut song nueng khrap

Twenty-one hundredths can be written as the decimal 0.21. (formal classroom explanation, male speaker)

The final เอ็ด rule applies within the component where the digit occurs. ส่วน creates a boundary between two cardinals; it does not alter their internal formation.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

พิซซ่าเหลือเท่าไรคะ

phitsa luea thaorai kha

How much pizza is left? (polite, female question)

เหลือประมาณหนึ่งส่วนสี่ครับ แบ่งกันสองคนน่าจะพอ

luea praman nueng suan si khrap baeng kan song khon na cha pho

About one quarter is left. It should be enough for the two of us to share. (polite, male reply)

The recoverable noun พิซซ่า is omitted from the answer. Thai does not require a subject pronoun or an article before the fraction once the shared situation identifies the whole.

Common Mistakes

1. Reversing numerator and denominator

❌ อ่านสามในสี่ว่าเศษสี่ส่วนสาม

Incorrect — this reverses 3/4 into 4/3.

✅ สามในสี่อ่านว่าเศษสามส่วนสี่ค่ะ

sam nai si an wa set sam suan si kha

Three quarters is read as three over four. (formal classroom explanation, female speaker)

2. Turning the denominator into an ordinal

❌ เศษสามส่วนที่สี่

Incorrect transfer from English ‘three fourths’ — the denominator is a cardinal after ส่วน.

✅ เศษสามส่วนสี่

set sam suan si

Three quarters. (standard mathematical reading)

3. Putting a classifier inside the fraction

❌ น้ำตาลเศษหนึ่งถ้วยส่วนสี่

Incorrect — finish the fraction before adding the measure unit.

✅ สูตรนี้ใช้น้ำตาลหนึ่งส่วนสี่ถ้วยค่ะ

sut ni chai namtan nueng suan si thuai kha

This recipe uses one quarter of a cup of sugar. (polite, female speaker)

4. Using เศษหนึ่งส่วนสอง in an ordinary time request

❌ ขอเวลารอเศษหนึ่งส่วนสองชั่วโมงครับ

Grammatically interpretable but unnatural in an everyday request — use ครึ่งชั่วโมง.

✅ กรุณารอประมาณครึ่งชั่วโมงครับ

karuna ro praman khrueng chua mong khrap

Please wait about half an hour. (polite, male instruction)

Key Takeaways

Use เศษ + numerator + ส่วน + denominator for a full mathematical reading, and omit เศษ when context makes the fraction clear. Use ครึ่ง for everyday halves, ของ to name the whole, and สามในสี่-style expressions for subsets. Each numeric component follows ordinary Thai cardinal rules, and measure units come after the complete fraction.
