Telling Clock Time in the Thai System

Thai has two widely used clock systems. Formal schedules, announcements, and news use a transparent twenty-four-hour pattern with นาฬิกา: 14:30 is สิบสี่นาฬิกาสามสิบนาที. Everyday conversation divides the day into named blocks and says the hour differently in each block: ตีสอง is 2:00 a.m., บ่ายสองโมง is 2:00 p.m., and สองทุ่ม is 8:00 p.m.

The conversational system is genuinely irregular from an English-speaking learner's perspective. There is no single equivalent of a.m./p.m. attached to every hour, and several blocks reset the count. Learn the anchor times first; the system then becomes predictable within each block.

Two systems, one moment

รถออกเวลาสิบสี่นาฬิกาสามสิบนาทีค่ะ

rot ok wela sip si nalika sam sip nathi kha

The vehicle departs at 14:30. (formal schedule announcement, female speaker)

รถออกบ่ายสองโมงครึ่งครับ

rot ok bai song mong khrueng khrap

The vehicle leaves at half past two in the afternoon. (polite, male conversational speech; same time)

The formal system counts the hour from zero through twenty-three and puts นาฬิกา after it. The everyday system packages the same moment through a time-of-day word and a smaller hour count. Thai verbs remain uninflected: the scheduled future reading of ออก comes from the timetable context.

💡
For reliable production, keep the formal pattern as a fallback: hour + นาฬิกา + minutes + นาที. Use the everyday blocks as you learn them; they are expected in ordinary conversation but cannot be derived from English a.m./p.m. word for word.

The everyday time blocks

At some boundaries more than one phrase occurs. บ่ายสี่โมง and สี่โมงเย็น can both refer to 4:00 p.m.; the latter is the most useful neutral model here. Eleven in the morning may be สิบเอ็ดโมงเช้า or simply สิบเอ็ดโมง when the time of day is obvious.

After midnight: ตี

From 1:00 through 5:00 a.m., put ตี before the hour number. The order is the reverse of morning โมง expressions.

พรุ่งนี้ต้องออกจากบ้านตีห้าค่ะ

phrung ni tong ok chak ban ti ha kha

Tomorrow I have to leave home at five in the morning. (polite, female speaker)

เที่ยวบินลงจอดตีหนึ่งสิบห้านาทีครับ

thiao bin long chot ti nueng sip ha nathi khrap

The flight lands at 1:15 a.m. (polite, male speaker)

ตีหนึ่ง uses หนึ่ง because it is the first hour in this block, not the final digit of a compound cardinal. Do not say เอ็ด here.

Morning: number + โมงเช้า

Morning clock time puts the hour before โมง. Adding เช้า removes ambiguity, especially for learners and when a schedule is not visible.

ร้านเปิดหกโมงเช้าและปิดห้าโมงเย็นค่ะ

ran poet hok mong chao lae pit ha mong yen kha

The shop opens at six in the morning and closes at five in the afternoon. (polite, female service information)

นัดหมอไว้สิบเอ็ดโมงเช้าครับ

nat mo wai sip et mong chao khrap

I have a doctor's appointment at eleven in the morning. (polite, male speaker)

The 11 in สิบเอ็ดโมง is an ordinary compound cardinal, so its final one is เอ็ด. The time word follows the complete number.

Noon and the afternoon

Twelve noon is เที่ยง or the explicit เที่ยงวัน. One p.m. is the fixed everyday form บ่ายโมง; ordinary Central Thai normally omits หนึ่ง. Two and three p.m. use บ่าย + number + โมง.

พักเที่ยงแล้วเจอกันบ่ายโมงนะคะ

phak thiang laeo choe kan bai mong na kha

Let's take the lunch break and meet again at one p.m. (polite, female speaker)

ประชุมเริ่มบ่ายสามโมงตรงครับ

prachum roem bai sam mong trong khrap

The meeting starts at exactly three p.m. (polite, male speaker)

ตรง means “on the dot.” บ่ายหนึ่งโมง is encountered, but บ่ายโมง is the normal compact form learners should produce.

Late afternoon and evening

From 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., number + โมงเย็น is a dependable everyday pattern. At 7:00 p.m. the count resets: one ทุ่ม is 7:00, two ทุ่ม is 8:00, through five ทุ่ม at 11:00.

เลิกงานหกโมงเย็นค่ะ แต่วันนี้คงกลับช้ากว่านั้น

loek ngan hok mong yen kha tae wan ni khong klap cha kwa nan

I finish work at six p.m., but today I'll probably go home later than that. (polite, female speaker)

หนังเริ่มหนึ่งทุ่มสี่สิบห้านาทีครับ

nang roem nueng thum si sip ha nathi khrap

The movie starts at 7:45 p.m. (polite, male speaker)

รถไฟเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกห้าทุ่มค่ะ

rotfai thiao sutthai ok ha thum kha

The last train leaves at eleven p.m. (polite, female service information)

This reset is why สองทุ่ม cannot mean 2:00 p.m. ทุ่ม itself selects the evening block.

Adding minutes

In the full form, append minute cardinal + นาที after the hour expression. For thirty minutes past, ครึ่ง is the natural conversational alternative. Thai ordinarily counts minutes after the hour rather than building English-style quarter past and quarter to templates.

TimeFull everyday expressionCommon conversational expression
09:05เก้าโมงเช้าห้านาทีเก้าโมงห้า
14:15บ่ายสองโมงสิบห้านาทีบ่ายสองโมงสิบห้า
15:30บ่ายสามโมงสามสิบนาทีบ่ายสามโมงครึ่ง
20:45สองทุ่มสี่สิบห้านาทีสองทุ่มสี่สิบห้า

Omitting นาที is (informal) and requires a clearly established clock-time context. Retain it in careful speech and whenever a number could be mistaken for a duration or another schedule item.

เจอกันเก้าโมงเช้าห้านาทีนะครับ

choe kan kao mong chao ha nathi na khrap

Let's meet at 9:05 a.m. (polite, male speaker)

ข่าวเริ่มสองทุ่มครึ่งค่ะ

khao roem song thum khrueng kha

The news starts at 8:30 p.m. (polite, female speaker)

The minutes and hours page distinguishes these clock expressions from durations such as สองชั่วโมงครึ่ง “two and a half hours.”

Formal twenty-four-hour time

The (formal) frame is hour + นาฬิกา + minutes + นาที. It is common in transport schedules, official appointments, news, and recorded announcements.

ประตูขึ้นเครื่องปิดเวลายี่สิบเอ็ดนาฬิกาสิบนาทีค่ะ

pratu khuen khrueang pit wela yi sip et nalika sip nathi kha

The boarding gate closes at 21:10. (formal airport announcement, female speaker)

การถ่ายทอดสดจะเริ่มเวลาสิบแปดนาฬิกาครับ

kan thaithot sot cha roem wela sip paet nalika khrap

The live broadcast will begin at 18:00. (formal announcement, male speaker)

Here 21 is ยี่สิบเอ็ด, so ordinary cardinal rules apply before นาฬิกา. นาฬิกา names a clock reading; it is not the duration unit ชั่วโมง.

💡
Keep clock time and elapsed time separate: สองทุ่ม is 8:00 p.m., สองนาฬิกา is 02:00 in formal time, and สองชั่วโมง is a duration of two hours.

Asking the time

กี่โมงแล้ว asks the current time; ...กี่โมง asks when an event occurs. Thai normally omits English it and often omits the event subject once it is understood.

ตอนนี้กี่โมงแล้วคะ

ton ni ki mong laeo kha

What time is it now? (polite, female question)

เกือบสี่โมงเย็นแล้วครับ

kueap si mong yen laeo khrap

It's almost four p.m. (polite, male reply; no dummy subject)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

พรุ่งนี้ประชุมกี่โมงคะ

phrung ni prachum ki mong kha

What time is the meeting tomorrow? (polite, female question)

บ่ายสองโมงครึ่งครับ ถ้ามาถึงก่อนสิบห้านาทียิ่งดี

bai song mong khrueng khrap tha ma thueng kon sip ha nathi ying di

At 2:30 p.m. Arriving fifteen minutes early would be even better. (polite, male reply; clock time followed by duration)

Common Mistakes

1. Treating ตี like โมง

❌ สองโมงตี

Incorrect — after midnight, ตี precedes the hour.

✅ รถออกตีสองค่ะ

rot ok ti song kha

The vehicle leaves at two a.m. (polite, female speaker)

2. Reading two p.m. as two ทุ่ม

❌ นัดกันสองทุ่มครับ

Incorrect for 2:00 p.m. — สองทุ่ม means 8:00 p.m.

✅ นัดกันบ่ายสองโมงครับ

nat kan bai song mong khrap

Let's meet at two p.m. (polite, male speaker)

3. Reversing the one-p.m. expression

❌ เริ่มหนึ่งโมงบ่ายค่ะ

Incorrect English-like order — บ่าย comes before the clock expression.

✅ เริ่มบ่ายโมงค่ะ

roem bai mong kha

It starts at one p.m. (polite, female speaker)

4. Using ชั่วโมง for a clock reading

❌ ประชุมเริ่มสิบสี่ชั่วโมงครับ

Incorrect — ชั่วโมง measures duration; it does not mark formal clock time.

✅ ประชุมเริ่มสิบสี่นาฬิกาครับ

prachum roem sip si nalika khrap

The meeting starts at 14:00. (formal schedule, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

Use hour + นาฬิกา in formal twenty-four-hour time. In everyday speech, learn the day blocks: ตี after midnight, โมงเช้า in the morning, เที่ยง at noon, บ่ายโมง through บ่ายสามโมง, โมงเย็น in late afternoon, and ทุ่ม from 7:00 p.m. Add minutes after the hour, or use ครึ่ง for half past, and never confuse clock labels with ชั่วโมง durations.
