Minutes, Hours, and Duration

Thai measures elapsed time with number + นาที “minutes” and number + ชั่วโมง “hours.” สองชั่วโมง is a span of two hours; สองทุ่ม is the clock time 8:00 p.m. English uses hour in both “two hours” and “two o'clock,” but Thai keeps duration units and clock-time labels separate.

Like other measure nouns, นาที and ชั่วโมง follow the complete number and do not take plural endings. Thai then uses predicates and context—ใช้เวลา “take time,” นาน “last/be long,” เหลือ “remain,” อีก “another/in,” and เสร็จใน “finish within”—to show how the duration relates to an event.

Basic duration units

นาทีnumber + นาทีสิบห้านาทีfifteen minutes
ชั่วโมงnumber + ชั่วโมงสองชั่วโมงtwo hours
combinedhours + minutesสองชั่วโมงสิบห้านาทีtwo hours fifteen minutes

จากบ้านไปสนามบินใช้เวลาประมาณหนึ่งชั่วโมงค่ะ

chak ban pai sanambin chai wela praman nueng chua mong kha

It takes about one hour to get from home to the airport. (polite, female speaker)

วิดีโอนี้ยาวสิบเอ็ดนาทีครับ

widio ni yao sip et nathi khrap

This video is eleven minutes long. (polite, male speaker)

รอสักสามสิบวินาทีนะคะ ระบบกำลังบันทึกข้อมูล

ro sak sam sip winathi na kha rabop kamlang banthuek khomun

Please wait about thirty seconds; the system is saving the data. (polite, female instruction)

One hour uses หนึ่ง because it is the whole cardinal one. Eleven minutes ends in เอ็ด because สิบเอ็ด is a multi-digit cardinal. Twenty minutes is ยี่สิบนาที. The time unit does not change those number rules.

💡
Build the number first, then add the unit: ยี่สิบเอ็ด + นาที = ยี่สิบเอ็ดนาที. นาที and ชั่วโมง do not behave like English plural nouns and do not interrupt the cardinal.

Minimal contrast: clock time versus elapsed time

รถออกสองทุ่มค่ะ

rot ok song thum kha

The vehicle leaves at eight p.m. (polite, female speaker; clock time)

นั่งรถประมาณสองชั่วโมงครับ

nang rot praman song chua mong khrap

The ride takes about two hours. (polite, male speaker; duration)

โมง, ทุ่ม, ตี, and นาฬิกา locate an event on the clock. ชั่วโมง and นาที measure a span. A sentence may contain both:

หนังเริ่มหนึ่งทุ่มและยาวสองชั่วโมงค่ะ

nang roem nueng thum lae yao song chua mong kha

The movie starts at seven p.m. and lasts two hours. (polite, female speaker)

The Thai clock-time system explains the day-block labels in detail.

Combining hours and minutes

Put the larger unit first, followed directly by the smaller unit. Thai needs no equivalent of English and inside the measure expression.

เที่ยวบินใช้เวลาสองชั่วโมงสี่สิบห้านาทีครับ

thiao bin chai wela song chua mong si sip ha nathi khrap

The flight takes two hours and forty-five minutes. (polite, male speaker)

การประชุมวันนี้นานหนึ่งชั่วโมงยี่สิบนาทีค่ะ

kan prachum wan ni nan nueng chua mong yi sip nathi kha

Today's meeting lasted one hour and twenty minutes. (polite, female speaker)

เหลือเวลาอีกห้านาทีก่อนปิดรับสมัครครับ

luea wela ik ha nathi kon pit rap samak khrap

Five minutes remain before applications close. (formal workplace reminder, male speaker)

In เหลือเวลาอีกห้านาที, อีก marks an additional/remaining interval. It does not make the verb future by inflection; the closing deadline supplies the temporal relation.

Half units and mixed durations

Use ครึ่ง + unit for half a unit: ครึ่งชั่วโมง “half an hour.” For a whole number plus a half, put ครึ่ง after the unit: หนึ่งชั่วโมงครึ่ง, สองชั่วโมงครึ่ง.

DurationThai formStructure
half an hourครึ่งชั่วโมงhalf + unit
one and a half hoursหนึ่งชั่วโมงครึ่งone + unit + half
two and a half hoursสองชั่วโมงครึ่งtwo + unit + half
half a minuteครึ่งนาทีhalf + unit

ขอพักครึ่งชั่วโมงแล้วค่อยทำต่อค่ะ

kho phak khrueng chua mong laeo khoi tham to kha

Let's take a half-hour break and then continue. (polite, female suggestion)

รถติดมาก วันนี้ขับมาหนึ่งชั่วโมงครึ่งครับ

rot tit mak wan ni khap ma nueng chua mong khrueng khrap

Traffic was terrible; it took me an hour and a half to drive here today. (polite, male speaker)

In (informal) speech, ชั่วโมงครึ่ง often means “an hour and a half,” with leading หนึ่ง understood. The explicit หนึ่งชั่วโมงครึ่ง is clearer for learners and careful scheduling.

💡
Position changes the value: ครึ่งชั่วโมง is 30 minutes, but หนึ่งชั่วโมงครึ่ง is 90 minutes. ครึ่ง before the unit halves one unit; ครึ่ง after a numbered unit adds half of that unit.

ใช้เวลา, นาน, and เป็นเวลา

ใช้เวลา + duration presents the time an activity requires. นาน + duration describes how long it lasts, while เป็นเวลา + duration is common in (formal) reports and narratives.

ตรวจเอกสารชุดนี้ใช้เวลาประมาณยี่สิบนาทีค่ะ

truat ekkasan chut ni chai wela praman yi sip nathi kha

Checking this set of documents takes about twenty minutes. (polite, female workplace statement)

ไฟดับนานเกือบสามชั่วโมงครับ

fai dap nan kueap sam chua mong khrap

The power was out for almost three hours. (polite, male speaker)

สนามบินปิดให้บริการเป็นเวลาสองชั่วโมงค่ะ

sanambin pit hai borikan pen wela song chua mong kha

The airport was closed for two hours. (formal news-style statement, female delivery)

Thai does not add a past-tense ending to ปิด or ดับ. Words such as วันนี้, context, and the event's completed status determine the time reference.

In, within, and after a duration

English in two hours can mean either “two hours from now” or “within a two-hour completion time.” Thai makes the relation more explicit.

MeaningThai frameExample
two hours from nowอีก + durationอีกสองชั่วโมง
finish within two hoursเสร็จใน + durationเสร็จในสองชั่วโมง
after two hoursหลังจาก + durationหลังจากสองชั่วโมง

อีกสิบนาทีรถจะออกแล้วค่ะ

ik sip nathi rot cha ok laeo kha

The vehicle will leave in ten minutes. (polite, female warning)

งานนี้น่าจะเสร็จในสองชั่วโมงครับ

ngan ni na cha set nai song chua mong khrap

This job should be finished within two hours. (polite, male estimate)

The broader aspectual behavior of duration phrases is developed on the durative expressions page.

Duration versus frequency

สองชั่วโมง is one two-hour span. ทุกสองชั่วโมง means “every two hours,” a recurring interval. สองครั้งต่อชั่วโมง means “twice per hour,” counting occurrences rather than elapsed time.

ระบบสำรองข้อมูลทุกสองชั่วโมงค่ะ

rabop samrong khomun thuk song chua mong kha

The system backs up the data every two hours. (formal technical statement, female speaker)

เจ้าหน้าที่ตรวจอุณหภูมิสองครั้งต่อชั่วโมงครับ

chaonathi truat unhaphum song khrang to chua mong khrap

The staff check the temperature twice per hour. (formal workplace statement, male speaker)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

จากที่นี่ไปสถานีใช้เวลากี่นาทีคะ

chak thi ni pai sathani chai wela ki nathi kha

How many minutes does it take to get from here to the station? (polite, female question)

ประมาณสิบห้านาทีครับ ถ้ารถไม่ติด

praman sip ha nathi khrap tha rot mai tit

About fifteen minutes, if traffic is clear. (polite, male reply; understood trip omitted)

Common Mistakes

1. Using โมง for duration

❌ เดินทางนานสองโมงค่ะ

Incorrect — โมง belongs to clock time, not elapsed duration.

✅ เดินทางนานสองชั่วโมงค่ะ

doen thang nan song chua mong kha

The trip takes two hours. (polite, female speaker)

2. Using ชั่วโมง for an evening clock time

❌ รถออกสองชั่วโมงครับ

Incorrect for 8:00 p.m. — this phrase means a two-hour duration.

✅ รถออกสองทุ่มครับ

rot ok song thum khrap

The vehicle leaves at eight p.m. (polite, male speaker)

3. Reversing the half-hour pattern

❌ พักชั่วโมงครึ่งค่ะ

Incorrect for the intended thirty-minute break — ชั่วโมงครึ่ง normally means about an hour and a half.

✅ พักครึ่งชั่วโมงค่ะ

phak khrueng chua mong kha

Take a half-hour break. (polite, female instruction)

4. Adding English plural marking or a classifier

❌ รอสามชั่วโมงตัวครับ

Incorrect — ชั่วโมง is already the time unit and takes no extra classifier.

✅ รอสามชั่วโมงครับ

ro sam chua mong khrap

Wait for three hours. (polite, male instruction)

Key Takeaways

Put the full number before นาที or ชั่วโมง, and list larger units before smaller ones. Use ครึ่งชั่วโมง for thirty minutes and number + ชั่วโมง + ครึ่ง for a numbered hour plus a half. Choose predicates such as ใช้เวลา, นาน, เหลือ, and เสร็จใน to show the duration's role, and keep elapsed time distinct from clock expressions such as โมง and ทุ่ม.
