ทุก and Universal Quantification

Thai ทุก expresses universal quantification: the statement applies to every relevant member or every recurrence. นักเรียนทุกคน means that no student in the relevant set is left out; ทุกวัน distributes an event across the days in a schedule. The set can be understood from context, but the kind of unit is normally overt as a classifier or a noun such as วัน.

English alternates among every, each, and all, and its determiner comes before the noun. Thai uses its own order: an overt lexical noun normally precedes ทุก + classifier, while the shorter ทุกคน, ทุกวัน, and ทุกครั้ง work because the following word itself names the units.

The minimal contrast: every member, some members, or the group as a whole

พนักงานทุกคนต้องลงชื่อก่อนเข้าห้องค่ะ

phanakngan thuk khon tong long chue kon khao hong kha

Every employee must sign in before entering the room. (formal workplace instruction, female speaker; member-by-member requirement)

พนักงานบางคนต้องลงชื่อก่อนเข้าห้องค่ะ

phanakngan bang khon tong long chue kon khao hong kha

Some employees must sign in before entering the room. (formal workplace instruction, female speaker; subset only)

พนักงานทั้งหมดอยู่ในห้องประชุมแล้วค่ะ

phanakngan thangmot yu nai hong prachum laeo kha

All the employees are now in the meeting room. (polite, female speaker; total group accounted for)

ทุก views the employees as members across whom an obligation is distributed. ทั้งหมด totals the group and is especially natural for reporting that the full set is present, finished, or accounted for. These meanings overlap in some sentences, but they do not impose the same viewpoint.

💡
ทุก is an “each member passes the test” quantifier. If one relevant member is an exception, the universal claim is false.

Productive noun-phrase patterns

PatternFunctionExample
noun + ทุก + classifierevery member of the noun setหนังสือทุกเล่ม
ทุก + person/time/unit nounevery unit; overt noun recoverableทุกคน, ทุกวัน, ทุกครั้ง
ทุก + numeral + time unitregular intervalทุกสองชั่วโมง
ทุก + unitexplicitly recurrent or emphatic “each and every”ทุก ๆ วัน

หนังสือทุกเล่มบนชั้นนี้ยืมได้ครับ

nangsue thuk lem bon chan ni yuem dai khrap

Every book on this shelf can be borrowed. (polite, male speaker; book classifier เล่ม)

รถทุกคันต้องมีบัตรผ่านค่ะ

rot thuk khan tong mi bat phan kha

Every vehicle must have a pass. (formal rule, female speaker; vehicle classifier คัน)

ผู้สมัครทุกคนได้รับอีเมลยืนยันแล้วครับ

phusamak thuk khon dai rap imel yuenyan laeo khrap

Every applicant has received a confirmation email. (formal workplace report, male speaker)

The full noun comes before ทุก: รถทุกคัน, not a word-for-word copy of English every car. When context already identifies the category, the noun can disappear and leave ทุกคัน “every one of the vehicles.” Thai omission is licensed by discourse, not by a special plural pronoun.

Some nouns naturally provide the unit themselves. ทุกประเทศ means every country, ทุกบ้าน every household/house, and ทุกกรณี every case. With ordinary counted objects, keeping the lexical classifier is the reliable productive pattern.

Recurrence and intervals

With time units, ทุก marks recurrence. ทุกวัน says an event occurs on every day in the relevant schedule. A numeral between ทุก and the unit creates a repeated interval: ทุกสองชั่วโมง “every two hours.” This is not the ordinary way to count objects; it describes how frequently something recurs.

รถรับส่งออกทุกครึ่งชั่วโมงครับ

rot rap song ok thuk khrueng chua mong khrap

The shuttle leaves every half hour. (polite, male information service)

กรุณากินยาทุกแปดชั่วโมงค่ะ

karuna kin ya thuk paet chua mong kha

Please take the medicine every eight hours. (formal medical instruction, female speaker)

เราโทรหากันทุกวันอาทิตย์ค่ะ

rao tho ha kan thuk wan athit kha

We call each other every Sunday. (polite, female speaker; weekly recurrence)

Do not confuse recurrence with duration. ทำงานทุกวัน means “work every day”; ทำงานทั้งวัน means “work all day.” One distributes across separate days, while the other fills one day as a total span.

💡
A numeral after ทุก is productive with recurring units: ทุกแปดชั่วโมง means “every eight hours.” It is an interval pattern, not a license to omit classifiers from ordinary counted objects.

ทุก versus แต่ละ

Both can cover the whole set, but แต่ละ foregrounds members as individually differentiated. ทุก often states a uniform rule or repeated fact; แต่ละ is preferred when the values or outcomes may differ.

พนักงานทุกคนต้องเข้าร่วมอบรมวันศุกร์ค่ะ

phanakngan thuk khon tong khao ruam oprom wan suk kha

Every employee must attend training on Friday. (formal workplace rule, female speaker; uniform requirement)

นักเรียนแต่ละคนเลือกหัวข้อของตัวเองครับ

nakrian taela khon lueak huakho khong tua eng khrap

Each student chooses their own topic. (formal class explanation, male speaker; individualized choices)

ห้องแต่ละห้องมีขนาดไม่เท่ากันค่ะ

hong taela hong mi khanat mai thao kan kha

Each room has a different size. (polite, female speaker; member-by-member contrast)

The difference is viewpoint, not truth conditions in every context. If every student chose a topic, นักเรียนทุกคนเลือกหัวข้อ can be true; adding แต่ละ and ของตัวเอง makes the individual allocation prominent. The dedicated แต่ละ page develops that contrast.

ทุก ๆ and standard spacing

The repetition mark in ทุก ๆ is written with spaces on both sides according to the guide's standard Thai typography. The repeated form is neutral and can emphasize regular recurrence or exhaustive distribution, but plain ทุก is already complete.

พนักงานตรวจอุปกรณ์ทุก ๆ สองชั่วโมงครับ

phanakngan truat upakon thuk thuk song chua mong khrap

The staff check the equipment every two hours. (formal workplace routine, male speaker)

ทุก ๆ คนมีสิทธิ์ถามคำถามค่ะ

thuk thuk khon mi sit tham khamtham kha

Each and every person has the right to ask a question. (formal assurance, female speaker; emphatic universal)

RTGS writes the pronounced repetition as thuk thuk; ๆ is not read as a separate word with its own special sound. Avoid mechanically doubling every instance: ทุกคน and ทุกวัน are the normal concise forms.

Scope with negation

ไม่ใช่ทุกคน unambiguously means “not everyone”: at least one exception exists. A subject containing ทุก followed by a negative predicate is less stable. Its easiest reading puts ทุก over the negation—“every member did not,” hence “none”—but some speakers and contexts also allow the inverse “not every member” reading. This variation is especially reason to make the intended scope explicit rather than rely on the bare sequence.

ไม่ใช่ทุกคนที่สะดวกประชุมวันจันทร์ค่ะ

mai chai thuk khon thi saduak prachum wan chan kha

Not everyone is available to meet on Monday. (polite, female speaker; some exceptions)

พนักงานทุกคนยังไม่ได้รับบัตรครับ

phanakngan thuk khon yang mai dai rap bat khrap

None of the employees have received their cards yet. (polite, male report; negated predicate distributed over the full set)

In the second example, ยัง “yet” and the report context strongly favor a separate not-yet status for every employee. If the intended meaning is “some have received cards, but not all,” say ไม่ใช่พนักงานทุกคนที่ได้รับบัตรแล้ว instead. Word order, construction, aspectual particles, and context jointly establish scope; Thai verbs do not inflect for a universal or negative form.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

เอกสารทุกฉบับต้องเซ็นวันนี้ไหมคะ

ekkasan thuk chabap tong sen wan ni mai kha

Does every document need to be signed today? (polite, female speaker)

ใช่ครับ ทุกฉบับต้องส่งก่อนห้าโมง

chai khrap thuk chabap tong song kon ha mong

Yes. Every one must be submitted before five. (polite, male speaker; document noun omitted)

The reply retains ทุกฉบับ because the classifier keeps the universal set visible. Repeating เอกสาร would also be grammatical, but discourse makes it unnecessary.

Common Mistakes

❌ ทุกนักเรียนต้องลงชื่อค่ะ

Incorrect ordinary noun-phrase order — an overt student noun precedes ทุกคน.

✅ นักเรียนทุกคนต้องลงชื่อค่ะ

nakrian thuk khon tong long chue kha

Every student must sign in. (formal instruction, female speaker)

❌ หนังสือทุกอยู่บนโต๊ะครับ

Incomplete count-noun phrase — ทุก needs the book classifier เล่ม.

✅ หนังสือทุกเล่มอยู่บนโต๊ะครับ

nangsue thuk lem yu bon to khrap

Every book is on the table. (polite, male speaker)

❌ ผมทำงานทุกวันจึงแปลว่าทำงานตลอดวัน

Incorrect — ทุกวัน marks daily recurrence, not all-day duration.

✅ วันนี้ผมทำงานทั้งวันครับ

wan ni phom thamngan thang wan khrap

Today I worked all day. (polite, male speaker; total duration)

❌ ทุกๆ คนได้รับบัตรแล้วค่ะ

Incorrect standard spacing around the repetition mark.

✅ ทุก ๆ คนได้รับบัตรแล้วค่ะ

thuk thuk khon dai rap bat laeo kha

Each and every person has received a card. (polite, female speaker; emphatic universal)

Key Takeaways

ทุก distributes a claim across every relevant member or recurrence. Use noun + ทุก + classifier for productive counted phrases, shorter forms such as ทุกคน and ทุกวัน when the unit word is sufficient, and ทุก + numeral + time unit for recurring intervals. Contrast subset บาง, individualizing แต่ละ, and collective total ทั้งหมด rather than treating English all, each, and every as one Thai slot.
