Distributive ละ means “per” or “each” when it follows the unit across which something is distributed: คนละสองเล่ม “two volumes per person,” โต๊ะละสามขวด “three bottles per table,” ชิ้นละยี่สิบบาท “twenty baht per piece,” วันละสองครั้ง “twice per day.” Its order is the reverse of common English phrasing: Thai names the distribution key before ละ, then gives the allocated quantity.
The structure contains two units. In โต๊ะละสามขวด, โต๊ะ identifies each receiving group and สามขวด identifies what each group gets. Choosing คนละ instead of โต๊ะละ changes the distribution from tables to individuals, so the total can change dramatically.
The core formula
The productive frame is distribution unit + ละ + allocated quantity. A fuller clause may name the object before this frame.
| Distribution key | ละ | Allocation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| คน | ละ | สองเล่ม | two volumes per person |
| โต๊ะ | ละ | สามขวด | three bottles per table |
| กล่อง | ละ | หกชิ้น | six pieces per box |
| วัน | ละ | สองครั้ง | two times per day |
| ครั้ง | ละ | หนึ่งเม็ด | one tablet each time |
ครูแจกหนังสือให้นักเรียนคนละสองเล่ม
khru chaek nangsue hai nakrian khon la song lem
The teacher gave each student two books. (neutral classroom speech)
วางน้ำไว้โต๊ะละสามขวดค่ะ
wang nam wai to la sam khuat kha
Put three bottles of water at each table. (polite, female speaker)
ยานี้กินวันละสองครั้ง ครั้งละหนึ่งเม็ดครับ
ya ni kin wan la song khrang khrang la nueng met khrap
Take this medicine twice a day, one tablet each time. (polite, male speaker; frequency and dose distributions)
ละ does not replace either classifier. คน identifies recipients, เล่ม classifies the allocated books, ครั้ง counts events, and เม็ด counts tablets. ละ relates the two sides.
The allocated side follows the ordinary counting patterns introduced under noun–number–classifier order; ละ adds a distributor without changing that internal order.
Prices: item unit + ละ + amount
Commercial Thai commonly uses a classifier or package noun before ละ to state a unit price.
ขนมชิ้นละยี่สิบห้าบาทค่ะ
khanom chin la yi sip ha bat kha
The desserts are twenty-five baht per piece. (polite, female seller)
น้ำผลไม้ขวดละสี่สิบบาทครับ
nam phonlamai khuat la si sip bat khrap
The fruit juice is forty baht per bottle. (polite, male seller)
ซื้อกาแฟสามถุง ถุงละสองร้อยบาท
sue kafae sam thung thung la song roi bat
Buy three bags of coffee at two hundred baht per bag. (neutral purchasing instruction)
The first phrase in the last example, กาแฟสามถุง, is ordinary noun–numeral–classifier order. The later ถุงละสองร้อยบาท takes the established bag unit and assigns a price to each member. Thai does not need to repeat กาแฟ.
Distribution key versus allocated unit
Changing the word before ละ changes who or what receives an allocation. Compare distribution by table with distribution by person.
งานประชุมแจกน้ำโต๊ะละสองขวด
ngan prachum chaek nam to la song khuat
The conference provides two bottles of water per table. (table-group distribution)
กิจกรรมกลางแจ้งแจกน้ำคนละสองขวด
kitkam klang chaeng chaek nam khon la song khuat
The outdoor activity provides two bottles of water per person. (individual distribution)
If four people sit at a table, the second policy supplies four times as many bottles as the first. The noun น้ำ and allocated unit ขวด remain constant; โต๊ะละ versus คนละ changes the denominator.
ละ versus แต่ละ, ทีละ, and ต่อ
These forms overlap in English translation but have different structures.
| Form | Core use | Example | Natural translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| คนละสองเล่ม | allocation per member | นักเรียนได้คนละสองเล่ม | the students get two each |
| นักเรียนแต่ละคน | explicitly quantifies each member | นักเรียนแต่ละคนได้สองเล่ม | each student gets two |
| ทีละสองคน | sequential batches | เข้าทีละสองคน | enter two at a time |
| กิโลเมตรต่อชั่วโมง | ratio or technical rate | แปดสิบกิโลเมตรต่อชั่วโมง | eighty kilometers per hour |
ละ is neutral in everyday, commercial, and formal distribution contexts. ต่อ is especially common for (formal/technical) ratios and rates, but it is not confined to technical prose: สี่สิบบาทต่อขวด is also a natural way to say “forty baht per bottle.” Notice the opposite information order: ขวดละสี่สิบบาท begins with the distributed unit, whereas สี่สิบบาทต่อขวด begins with the rate amount. ทีละ adds sequential staging rather than simple allocation. แต่ละ precedes an explicitly quantified noun phrase and can make the members more prominent.
นักเรียนแต่ละคนได้รับสมุดสองเล่มค่ะ
nakrian tae la khon dai rap samut song lem kha
Each student received two notebooks. (polite, female speaker; explicit each-member phrase)
เชิญเข้าห้องทีละสามคนครับ
choen khao hong thi la sam khon khrap
Please enter the room three people at a time. (polite, male speaker; sequential batches)
รถคันนี้วิ่งได้เก้าสิบกิโลเมตรต่อชั่วโมง
rot khan ni wing dai kao sip kilomet to chuamong
This car can travel at ninety kilometers per hour. (neutral technical rate; noun–classifier–demonstrative order)
The last example also shows รถคันนี้, where the demonstrative follows classifier คัน. Distributive or rate expressions do not suspend ordinary classifier syntax elsewhere in the noun phrase.
Ellipsis after the object is established
The allocated noun may be omitted when discourse makes it recoverable, but its classifier remains.
ครูเตรียมหนังสือไว้ นักเรียนได้รับหนังสือคนละสองเล่ม
khru triam nangsue wai nakrian dai rap nangsue khon la song lem
The teacher prepared books; the students received two books each. (full allocated noun phrase)
หนังสืออยู่บนโต๊ะ นักเรียนหยิบคนละสองเล่มได้เลยค่ะ
nangsue yu bon to nakrian yip khon la song lem dai loei kha
The books are on the table; the students may take two each. (polite, female speaker; allocated noun omitted)
The classifier เล่ม preserves the book category. A bare คนละสอง would leave the allocated unit unexpressed unless an unusually tight counting context made it obvious. Robust Thai keeps numeral + classifier.
หนึ่ง and ordinal ที่ inside distributive contexts
หนึ่ง after ละ can specify one allocated unit: คนละหนึ่งขวด “one bottle per person.” This is still an exact count, not an indefinite introduction. Ordinals identify a ranked member of a set and do not themselves distribute anything.
ผู้เข้าร่วมได้รับบัตรคนละหนึ่งใบครับ
phu khao ruam dai rap bat khon la nueng bai khrap
Each participant receives one card. (polite, male speaker; exact allocation)
แต่ละกลุ่มใช้ขวดที่สองสำหรับเก็บตัวอย่างค่ะ
tae la klum chai khuat thi song samrap kep tuayang kha
Each group uses the second bottle for storing a sample. (polite, female speaker; ordinal within every group's set)
นักเรียนคนที่สองได้รับหนังสือหนึ่งเล่ม
nakrian khon thi song dai rap nangsue nueng lem
The second student received one book. (ordinal individual, not a distributive statement)
Compare the last example with นักเรียนได้รับหนังสือคนละหนึ่งเล่ม “the students received one book each.” คนที่สอง selects one ranked student; คนละ distributes over all relevant students.
Counting dialogue and total calculation
แต่ละโต๊ะได้น้ำกี่ขวดคะ
tae la to dai nam ki khuat kha
How many bottles of water does each table get? (polite, female speaker)
โต๊ะละสามขวดครับ มีสี่โต๊ะจึงใช้น้ำสิบสองขวด
to la sam khuat khrap mi si to chueng chai nam sip song khuat
Three bottles per table. There are four tables, so we use twelve bottles. (polite, male speaker)
The reply names the distribution key โต๊ะ, the allocation สามขวด, and then the total น้ำสิบสองขวด. Distributive and total counts answer different questions; neither can be inferred safely without knowing the number of distribution units.
Nested distributions and scope
More than one ละ phrase can occur when the structure is clear. วันละสองครั้ง ครั้งละหนึ่งเม็ด first distributes events across days, then tablets across events. Each ละ takes the unit immediately before it as its local key.
In (formal/technical) instructions, repeat units rather than relying on vague context. In (informal) speech, visible recipients or packages permit more omission, but rearranging the units can still reverse the intended ratio.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English “two per person” order
❌ แจกน้ำสองขวดละคน
Incorrect — Thai places the distribution unit before ละ, then the allocation.
✅ แจกน้ำคนละสองขวดค่ะ
chaek nam khon la song khuat kha
Correct — give each person two bottles of water. (polite, female speaker)
2. Omitting the allocated classifier
❌ นักเรียนได้รับหนังสือคนละสอง
Incorrect — the allocation needs classifier เล่ม.
✅ นักเรียนได้รับหนังสือคนละสองเล่มครับ
nakrian dai rap nangsue khon la song lem khrap
Correct — each student received two books. (polite, male speaker)
3. Using อัน for a noun with a conventional classifier
❌ แจกหนังสือคนละหนึ่งอัน
Incorrect in neutral usage — books take เล่ม even inside a distributive.
✅ แจกหนังสือคนละหนึ่งเล่มค่ะ
chaek nangsue khon la nueng lem kha
Correct — give each person one book. (polite, female speaker)
4. Preposing a demonstrative elsewhere in the phrase
❌ นี้น้ำขวดราคาเท่าไร
Incorrect for ‘this bottle of water’ — นี้ follows ขวด.
✅ น้ำขวดนี้ราคาเท่าไรคะ
nam khuat ni rakha thaorai kha
Correct — how much is this bottle of water? (polite, female speaker)
5. Placing ละ after the allocation
❌ ครูแจกสมุดคนสองเล่มละ
Incorrect — ละ must immediately follow the distribution key คน.
✅ ครูแจกสมุดคนละสองเล่มครับ
khru chaek samut khon la song lem khrap
Correct — the teacher gave each person two notebooks. (polite, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
Distributive ละ follows the unit over which an allocation is calculated: คนละ, โต๊ะละ, ขวดละ, วันละ, ครั้งละ. The quantity after ละ retains its own classifier or measure. Changing the unit before ละ changes the denominator; changing the unit after it changes the allocation. Keep normal noun–number–classifier and noun–classifier–demonstrative order, preserve classifiers under ellipsis, and distinguish distributive ละ from member-focused แต่ละ, sequential ทีละ, and technical rate ต่อ.
