Many Thai nouns do not have a single classifier for every situation. กาแฟ “coffee” can be counted by แก้ว “served glass/cup,” ถุง “bag,” or ขวด “bottle.” ดอกไม้ “flowers” can be counted by ดอก for individual blossoms or ช่อ for bouquets. กระดาษ “paper” can be counted by แผ่น, ม้วน, or รีม. Each choice is licensed because it identifies a different unit—not because the classifiers are interchangeable synonyms.
This flexibility is systematic. The noun names a substance or category; the classifier packages it into countable portions, objects, or groups. Once that package is chosen, demonstratives, ellipsis, หนึ่ง, and ordinals all refer to units of that kind.
The semantic-choice guide explains how shape, function, and convention license the available units; this page focuses on what happens when one noun has several licensed options.
One noun, several countable units
| Noun | Classifier | Unit construed | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
ton chao phom duem kafae song kaeo khrap
In the morning I drink two cups of coffee. (polite, male speaker; served portions)
ฉันซื้อกาแฟกลับบ้านสามถุงค่ะ
chan sue kafae klap ban sam thung kha
I bought three bags of coffee to take home. (polite, female speaker; retail packages)
ร้านส่งดอกไม้มาห้าช่อ แต่ละช่อมีสิบดอก
ran song dokmai ma ha cho tae la cho mi sip dok
The shop delivered five bouquets, each with ten flowers. (bouquet count containing blossom counts)
The last example contains two legitimate classifiers for ดอกไม้ at different levels. ช่อ counts bouquets; ดอก counts their members. Choosing one unit does not erase the other—it establishes the level at which the current numeral operates.
Multiple classifiers are not free variants
Replacing a classifier usually changes truth conditions. กาแฟสองแก้ว might be brewed from part of กาแฟหนึ่งถุง. ดอกไม้สองช่อ may contain twenty individual flowers, not two. กระดาษสองรีม contains far more than กระดาษสองแผ่น.
เครื่องพิมพ์ใช้กระดาษวันละหนึ่งรีม
khrueang phim chai kradat wan la nueng rim
The printer uses one ream of paper per day. (neutral workplace measurement)
แบบฟอร์มนี้ใช้กระดาษเพียงสองแผ่นค่ะ
baepfom ni chai kradat phiang song phaen kha
This form uses only two sheets of paper. (polite, female speaker)
The two paper phrases answer different inventory questions. A classifier is therefore closer to a construal operator than a gender marker: it defines one relevant unit.
Demonstratives inherit the selected unit
The classifier comes before the demonstrative and tells the listener what “this” points to.
กาแฟแก้วนี้เย็นหมดแล้วครับ
kafae kaeo ni yen mot laeo khrap
This cup of coffee has gone completely cold. (polite, male speaker; served-drink unit)
กาแฟถุงนั้นคั่วเข้มกว่าค่ะ
kafae thung nan khua khem kwa kha
That bag of coffee is more darkly roasted. (polite, female speaker; retail-package unit)
ดอกไม้ช่อนี้สำหรับคุณแม่ครับ
dokmai cho ni samrap khun mae khrap
This bouquet is for Mom. (polite, male speaker)
English preposes this and that, but Thai uses noun + chosen classifier + demonstrative. Changing แก้วนี้ to ถุงนี้ changes the referent from a served drink to a bag, even though กาแฟ remains the noun.
Ellipsis carries the viewpoint forward
After the noun is established, the selected classifier can stand alone with a demonstrative or modifier.
ฉันจะซื้อกาแฟถุงสีแดงค่ะ
chan cha sue kafae thung si daeng kha
I'll buy the coffee in the red bag. (polite, female speaker; full noun phrase)
ถุงสีแดงคั่วกลาง ส่วนถุงสีดำคั่วเข้ม
thung si daeng khua klang suan thung si dam khua khem
The red one is medium roast, while the black one is dark roast. (coffee bags established; noun ellipsis)
Elliptical ถุง continues the package construal. Replacing the second ถุง with แก้ว would normally introduce a serving, not track the other bag. A coherent reference chain keeps the classifier stable unless the speaker explicitly changes levels.
หนึ่ง and ordinals operate within the chosen unit
With each classifier, Thai distinguishes exact count, introduction, and rank. กาแฟหนึ่งแก้ว is exactly one served coffee; กาแฟแก้วหนึ่ง introduces a particular serving; กาแฟแก้วที่สอง ranks a serving. A bag uses the same syntax but creates a different unit.
ขอกาแฟหนึ่งแก้วค่ะ
kho kafae nueng kaeo kha
One coffee, please. (polite, female speaker; exact serving count)
มีกาแฟถุงหนึ่งเปิดอยู่บนชั้นครับ
mi kafae thung nueng poet yu bon chan khrap
One bag of coffee is open on the shelf. (polite, male speaker; introduced package)
กาแฟแก้วที่สองไม่ต้องใส่นมค่ะ
kafae kaeo thi song mai tong sai nom kha
Do not put milk in the second coffee. (polite, female speaker; ordinal serving)
แก้วหนึ่ง is not “the first cup”; ordinal rank requires แก้วที่หนึ่ง or the ordinary form แก้วแรก. The classifier determines the domain over which the ordinal is calculated.
Nested units reveal internal structure
Thai can state a larger unit and then quantify its contents. This makes the relationship between classifiers explicit.
ฉันสั่งน้ำสองลัง ลังละยี่สิบสี่ขวด
chan sang nam song lang lang la yi sip si khuat
I ordered two cases of water, twenty-four bottles per case. (case level containing bottle units)
เตรียมข้าวสามหม้อ หม้อละสิบชามครับ
triam khao sam mo mo la sip cham khrap
Prepare three pots of rice, ten bowls per pot. (polite, male speaker; cooking vessels mapped to servings)
The container or group classifier sets an outer unit; a second measure specifies inner units. Neither can be replaced by อัน without losing the package structure.
Counting dialogue
ลูกค้ารับกาแฟกี่ถุงคะ
lukkha rap kafae ki thung kha
How many bags of coffee will the customer take? (polite, female staff member)
สองถุงครับ ถุงแรกคั่วอ่อน ถุงที่สองคั่วเข้ม
song thung khrap thung raek khua on thung thi song khua khem
Two. The first is light roast, and the second is dark roast. (polite, male speaker; noun omitted)
The question fixes the relevant unit as retail bags. The answer tracks those units through ถุงแรก and ถุงที่สอง. If the intended question concerned prepared drinks, it would ask กี่แก้ว instead.
Register and contextual licensing
These alternations are neutral across conversation and formal inventory language when the units are clear. (Formal/technical) writing often defines a unit explicitly—such as sheets per ream or bottles per case—to prevent commercial ambiguity. (Informal) conversation relies more heavily on visible packaging and shared context, but the classifier still conveys a real unit.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English numeral–noun order
❌ สองกาแฟอยู่บนโต๊ะ
Incorrect — Thai must choose a unit and place noun before numeral + classifier.
✅ กาแฟสองแก้วอยู่บนโต๊ะค่ะ
kafae song kaeo yu bon to kha
Correct — two cups of coffee are on the table. (polite, female speaker)
2. Omitting the unit
❌ ฉันซื้อกระดาษมาสาม
Incorrect — the listener needs to know whether these are sheets, rolls, reams, or another unit.
✅ ผมซื้อกระดาษมาสามม้วนครับ
phom sue kradat ma sam muan khrap
Correct — I bought three rolls of paper. (polite, male speaker)
3. Using อัน as a universal classifier
❌ ดอกไม้สองอันอยู่ในแจกัน
Incorrect for individual flowers — use ดอก.
✅ ดอกไม้สองดอกอยู่ในแจกันค่ะ
dokmai song dok yu nai chaekan kha
Correct — two flowers are in the vase. (polite, female speaker)
4. Preposing the demonstrative
❌ นี้กาแฟถุงคั่วเข้ม
Incorrect for ‘this bag of coffee’ — นี้ follows ถุง.
✅ กาแฟถุงนี้คั่วเข้มครับ
kafae thung ni khua khem khrap
Correct — this bag of coffee is dark roast. (polite, male speaker)
5. Switching classifiers while tracking the same package
❌ กาแฟสองถุง ถุงหนึ่งคั่วเข้ม อีกแก้วหนึ่งคั่วอ่อน
Incorrect for contrasting two bags — แก้ว changes the second referent into a served cup.
✅ กาแฟสองถุง ถุงหนึ่งคั่วเข้ม อีกถุงหนึ่งคั่วอ่อน
kafae song thung thung nueng khua khem ik thung nueng khua on
Correct — two bags of coffee, one dark roast and the other light roast.
Key Takeaways
A noun may license multiple classifiers because it can be packaged as different countable units. Select the unit first, then use noun + numeral + classifier, noun + classifier + demonstrative, ellipsis, หนึ่ง, or ordinal ที่ consistently within that unit. Switch classifiers only to change the level—from blossom to bouquet, sheet to ream, or retail bag to served cup—and make the shift explicit when context would not recover it.
