Thai can repeat a classifier because each occurrence performs a different grammatical job. In เสื้อตัวใหญ่สองตัว “two large shirts,” the first ตัว supports the modifier ใหญ่, while the second completes the count สองตัว. Across sentences, the classifier can recur again to track individuals: ตัวหนึ่ง...อีกตัวหนึ่ง... “one...another....”
English usually replaces the noun with general one/ones. Thai keeps the noun's classifier, which preserves the chosen category while avoiding repetition of the full noun. This makes classifiers a central reference-tracking device rather than ornamental counting words.
Repetition inside one noun phrase
| Slot | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| noun | establish category | เสื้อ — shirt |
| classifier + modifier | select a described subtype | ตัวใหญ่ — large one |
| numeral + classifier | count that subtype | สองตัว — two items |
| complete phrase | combine both operations | เสื้อตัวใหญ่สองตัว — two large shirts |
ฉันซื้อเสื้อตัวใหญ่สองตัว
chan sue suea tua yai song tua
I bought two large shirts. (informal; typically female speaker; ตัว repeated for modification and count)
ร้านมีโต๊ะตัวกลมสามตัวอยู่ด้านใน
ran mi to tua klom sam tua yu dan nai
The shop has three round tables inside. (neutral everyday speech)
The shorter เสื้อใหญ่สองตัว and โต๊ะกลมสามตัว are also possible when the property directly modifies the noun. Classifier repetition makes individuation explicit and is especially useful when the phrase contrasts subtypes: large ones rather than small ones, round tables rather than square ones.
Repetition across a reference chain
Once a counted set is introduced, the classifier can replace the noun while the speaker divides the set into members.
มีหนังสือสองเล่ม เล่มหนึ่งใหม่ อีกเล่มหนึ่งเก่ามาก
mi nangsue song lem lem nueng mai ik lem nueng kao mak
There are two books: one is new, and the other is very old. (neutral reference chain)
The first เล่ม completes หนังสือสองเล่ม. The second begins เล่มหนึ่ง, introducing one member. อีกเล่มหนึ่ง identifies another member of the same book set. Repeating หนังสือ in every clause would be grammatical but heavy.
รถสามคันจอดอยู่ข้างนอก คันแรกเป็นของบริษัท คันที่สองเป็นของลูกค้า
rot sam khan chot yu khang nok khan raek pen khong borisat khan thi song pen khong lukkha
Three cars are parked outside: the first belongs to the company, and the second to a customer. (neutral workplace speech)
Here คันแรก and คันที่สอง keep the vehicle construal active. ที่ + numeral creates an ordinal, while แรก is the ordinary lexical form “first.” The unmentioned third vehicle remains part of the original set without being repeated.
Full noun versus classifier ellipsis
Compare an explicit demonstrative phrase with its elliptical counterpart:
หนังสือเล่มนี้มีภาพสี
nangsue lem ni mi phap si
This book has color pictures. (full noun–classifier–demonstrative phrase)
เล่มนี้มีภาพสี
lem ni mi phap si
This one has color pictures. (books already established; noun omitted)
The classifier is not itself a generic pronoun. เล่มนี้ can recover a book or volume because เล่ม agrees with the active discourse category. If the conversation shifts to cars, use คันนี้; if it shifts to documents, use ฉบับนี้ or another appropriate classifier.
See Classifier Ellipsis for longer patterns of omission.
หนึ่ง, อีก, and ordinals keep members distinct
Classifier + หนึ่ง introduces an individuated member; อีก + classifier + หนึ่ง adds another. Classifier + ที่ + numeral picks a ranked member.
นักเรียนคนหนึ่งตอบแล้ว แต่อีกคนหนึ่งยังคิดอยู่
nakrian khon nueng top laeo tae ik khon nueng yang khit yu
One student has answered, but another is still thinking. (neutral classroom speech)
ผู้สมัครคนที่สามขอเริ่มก่อนครับ
phusamak khon thi sam kho roem kon khrap
The third applicant asked to start first. (polite, male speaker)
Do not confuse คนหนึ่ง “one/a certain person” with คนที่หนึ่ง “person number one.” Position and ที่ assign different discourse roles to the numeral.
Repeating a measure tracks the chosen construal
With substances, the unit itself can establish what later references mean.
กาแฟสองแก้วอยู่บนโต๊ะ แก้วหนึ่งหวาน อีกแก้วหนึ่งไม่ใส่น้ำตาล
kafae song kaeo yu bon to kaeo nueng wan ik kaeo nueng mai sai namtan
Two coffees are on the table: one is sweet, and the other has no sugar. (served glassfuls)
If the first phrase were กาแฟสองขวด, later ขวดหนึ่ง would track bottled portions instead. Classifier selection therefore changes both the original quantity and the reference chain that follows.
กาแฟแก้วนี้ของใครคะ
kafae kaeo ni khong khrai kha
Whose coffee is this? (polite, female speaker; noun–classifier–demonstrative order)
Counting dialogue
มีรถส่งของกี่คันคะ
mi rot song khong ki khan kha
How many delivery vehicles are there? (polite, female speaker)
สามคันครับ คันหนึ่งกำลังมา อีกสองคันจอดด้านหลัง
sam khan khrap khan nueng kamlang ma ik song khan chot dan lang
Three. One is on its way, and the other two are parked in back. (polite, male speaker)
The reply omits รถส่งของ throughout, but คัน keeps the vehicle category active. English requires one and the other two; Thai uses classifier-based units plus context.
Repetition is not redundant when scope differs
Compare เสื้อสีดำสองตัว and เสื้อตัวสีดำสองตัว. Both can describe two black shirts. The second more overtly individuates “the black ones,” which is useful when contrasting them with shirts of another color. The extra classifier is motivated by information structure, not agreement.
เอาเสื้อตัวสีดำสองตัว ไม่เอาตัวสีขาวครับ
ao suea tua si dam song tua mai ao tua si khao khrap
I'll take two of the black shirts, not the white one. (polite, male speaker)
The last ตัวสีขาว omits เสื้อ and contrasts a different member. Thai repeats the classifier while dropping recoverable nouns and subjects.
Common Mistakes
1. Deleting the counting classifier after a modified classifier phrase
❌ ฉันซื้อเสื้อตัวใหญ่สอง
Incorrect — the final count still needs ตัว.
✅ ฉันซื้อเสื้อตัวใหญ่สองตัวเมื่อวาน
chan sue suea tua yai song tua muea wan
Correct — I bought two large shirts yesterday. (informal; typically female speaker)
2. Repeating the noun instead of tracking with the classifier
❌ มีหนังสือสองเล่ม หนังสือหนึ่งใหม่ หนังสือหนึ่งเก่า
Incorrect — bare หนังสือหนึ่ง cannot track individual members; the classifier must head the contrast.
✅ มีหนังสือสองเล่ม เล่มหนึ่งใหม่ อีกเล่มหนึ่งเก่าค่ะ
mi nangsue song lem lem nueng mai ik lem nueng kao kha
Correct — there are two books, one new and the other old. (polite, female speaker)
3. Switching to general อัน mid-chain
❌ รถสองคัน คันหนึ่งใหม่ อีกอันหนึ่งเก่า
Incorrect in neutral usage — the second vehicle must remain in the คัน reference chain.
✅ รถสองคัน คันหนึ่งใหม่ อีกคันหนึ่งเก่า
rot song khan khan nueng mai ik khan nueng kao
Correct — two cars, one new and the other old.
4. Preposing the demonstrative
❌ นี้เล่มมีภาพสี
Incorrect — demonstrative นี้ follows the classifier.
✅ เล่มนี้มีภาพสีสวยมาก
lem ni mi phap si suai mak
Correct — this one has beautiful color pictures.
5. Confusing introduced and ranked members
❌ ผู้สมัครคนหนึ่งหมายถึงผู้สมัครคนแรก
Incorrect — คนหนึ่ง is indefinite, not ordinal.
✅ ผู้สมัครคนที่หนึ่งเข้ามาได้เลยครับ
phusamak khon thi nueng khao ma dai loei khrap
Correct — applicant number one may come in now. (polite, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
A classifier may recur because one occurrence supports a modifier, another completes a count, and later ones track members after the noun is omitted. Keep classifier choice stable through a reference chain unless the speaker deliberately changes construal. Use classifier + หนึ่ง for an introduced member, อีก + classifier for another, and classifier + ที่ + numeral for ordinal rank.
