With ordinary count nouns, the most explicit individuating pattern places Thai demonstratives after the noun and its classifier: หนังสือเล่มนี้ “this book,” รถคันนั้น “that car,” and บ้านหลังโน้น “that house over there.” The classifier is not decorative. It creates the referential unit to which นี้, นั้น, or โน้น points.
English places this and that before the noun. Thai begins with the category, identifies the appropriate classifier, and ends with spatial or discourse distance. Learning that direction as one chunk prevents several independent-looking errors.
The core order
noun + classifier + demonstrative
| Distance | Pattern | Example | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| proximal | N + CL + นี้ | หนังสือเล่มนี้ | this book; current/near item |
| distal | N + CL + นั้น | รถคันนั้น | that car; previously indicated item |
| far/distinctly over there | N + CL + โน้น | บ้านหลังโน้น | that house over there |
หนังสือเล่มนี้อ่านง่ายมากค่ะ
nangsue lem ni an ngai mak kha
This book is very easy to read. (polite, female speaker)
รถคันนั้นจอดขวางทางออกครับ
rot khan nan chot khwang thang ok khrap
That car is blocking the exit. (polite, male speaker)
บ้านหลังโน้นเป็นบ้านของคุณยายค่ะ
ban lang non pen ban khong khun yai kha
That house over there is Grandma's. (polite, female speaker)
นี้ can also identify something current in the discourse, not merely within arm's reach. นั้น often retrieves something already mentioned. โน้น strongly directs attention to a more distant location or contrast and is common in (informal/neutral spoken) pointing; formal prose more often establishes reference lexically.
Classifierless noun + demonstrative also occurs, especially when reference is less strongly individuated or the noun behaves like a place, institution, or established whole, as in อาคารนี้ “this building” and ประเทศนี้ “this country.” With ordinary objects, the conventional classifier gives the clearer singled-out reading taught on this page; the productive classifier frame is not an exceptionless ban on every classifierless phrase.
Add number before the classifier
When a numeral and demonstrative occur together, the core order is:
noun + number + classifier + demonstrative
หนังสือสองเล่มนี้ฉันยืมมาจากห้องสมุด
nangsue song lem ni chan yuem ma chak hongsamut
I borrowed these two books from the library. (informal; typically female speaker)
ลูกค้าสามคนนั้นมาถึงแล้วครับ
luk kha sam khon nan ma thueng laeo khrap
Those three customers have arrived. (polite, male speaker)
The demonstrative scopes over the counted group. หนังสือสองเล่มนี้ is not “this two-book” assembled from English order; สองเล่ม first packages two volumes, then นี้ locates that group.
The classifier must match the noun: เล่ม for books, คน for people, คัน for vehicles, and หลัง for houses. Using general อัน everywhere erases a conventional semantic choice and can sound childish or simply wrong.
Modifiers precede the final classifier–demonstrative unit
A descriptive modifier can stand after the noun and before the classifier–demonstrative sequence:
เสื้อสีฟ้าตัวนี้ลดราคาอยู่ค่ะ
suea si fa tua ni lot rakha yu kha
This light-blue shirt is on sale. (polite, female speaker)
กาแฟร้อนสองแก้วนั้นยังไม่มีใครรับครับ
kafae ron song kaeo nan yang maimi khrai rap khrap
No one has collected those two hot coffees yet. (polite, male speaker)
The practical expansion is N + description + number + CL + demonstrative. Other adjective–classifier orders are possible when the classifier helps individuate the referent; the classifier-and-adjective guide treats that choice.
Noun ellipsis: the classifier can carry reference
Once the noun is known, Thai can omit it and retain classifier + demonstrative:
ฉันชอบหนังสือสองเล่ม แต่จะซื้อเล่มนี้ค่ะ
chan chop nangsue song lem tae cha sue lem ni kha
I like two books, but I'll buy this one. (polite, female speaker)
เล่มนี้ means “this one [volume].” The lexical class retained in เล่ม tells the listener what kind of entity is being selected. English uses the pronoun one; Thai can use the classifier itself.
คันนั้นแพงเกินไป ลองดูคันนี้ไหมครับ
khan nan phaeng koen pai long du khan ni mai khrap
That one is too expensive. Would you like to look at this one? (vehicle context; polite male speaker)
Do not replace a known specific classifier with อัน automatically. เล่มนี้ and คันนี้ maintain clearer reference than generic อันนี้.
Classifier choice changes the construal
The same broad noun can be packaged differently. With กาแฟ “coffee,” a classifier can point to a serving, a package, or another concrete presentation:
กาแฟแก้วนี้หวานไปหน่อยค่ะ
kafae kaeo ni wan pai noi kha
This glass of coffee is a little too sweet. (polite, female speaker; serving construed by container)
กาแฟถุงนั้นคั่วเมื่อสัปดาห์ที่แล้วครับ
kafae thung nan khua muea sapda thi laeo khrap
That bag of coffee was roasted last week. (polite, male speaker; packaged product)
แก้ว directs attention to one prepared serving; ถุง to one bag. The classifier helps construct the referent rather than merely agreeing with a pre-existing noun.
หนึ่ง and ordinal ที่
Compare หนังสือเล่มหนึ่ง “one/a certain book” with หนังสือเล่มที่หนึ่ง “the first book.” หนึ่ง without ที่ counts or introduces; ที่หนึ่ง ranks within an ordered set.
เล่มหนึ่งเป็นของฉัน ส่วนเล่มที่หนึ่งเป็นของครู
lem nueng pen khong chan suan lem thi nueng pen khong khru
One volume is mine, while the first volume belongs to the teacher. (informal; typically female speaker for ฉัน)
The example is deliberately contrastive. In ordinary discourse, context normally makes only one interpretation relevant.
A counting and selection dialogue
คุณต้องการหนังสือกี่เล่มครับ
khun tongkan nangsue ki lem khrap
How many books would you like? (polite, male staff member)
เอาสองเล่มนี้ค่ะ
ao song lem ni kha
I'll take these two. (polite, female customer; noun omitted)
The question uses noun + กี่ + classifier. The answer replaces กี่ with สอง, retains เล่ม, adds นี้, and omits the recoverable noun หนังสือ.
Common Mistakes
1. Moving the demonstrative before the noun
❌ นี้หนังสือเป็นของฉัน
Incorrect — copying English “this book” order.
✅ หนังสือเล่มนี้เป็นของฉัน
nangsue lem ni pen khong chan
Correct — this book is mine. (informal; typically female speaker)
2. Omitting the classifier
❌ ฉันซื้อหนังสือสองนี้
Incorrect — a numeral cannot connect directly to นี้ without the classifier.
✅ ฉันซื้อหนังสือสองเล่มนี้
chan sue nangsue song lem ni
Correct — I bought these two books. (informal; typically female speaker)
3. Putting the classifier before the number
❌ หนังสือเล่มสองนี้หายไป
Incorrect for “these two books” — เล่มสอง can suggest an ordinal-like sequence in another context.
✅ หนังสือสองเล่มนี้หายไป
nangsue song lem ni hai pai
Correct — these two books have disappeared.
4. Using อัน for every referent
❌ รถอันนั้นเป็นของบริษัท
Incorrect ordinary classifier choice — vehicles take คัน.
✅ รถคันนั้นเป็นของบริษัท
rot khan nan pen khong borisat
Correct — that car belongs to the company.
Key Takeaways
Place นี้, นั้น, or โน้น after the noun's classifier. A numeral comes before the classifier, while modifiers normally precede the final classifier–demonstrative unit. Once the noun is active in discourse, the classifier plus demonstrative can stand alone and preserve the intended semantic class.
