Thai has a useful three-way demonstrative contrast: นี้ points near the speaker or current focus, นั้น points farther away or to something already separated in discourse, and โน้น points distinctly far away. Unlike English this/that, these modifier forms follow the noun or classifier.
The three degrees are not measured in meters. Gesture, visibility, current attention, and conversational framing all matter. A speaker can choose นั้น for an object within reach if it is on the listener's side, or นี้ for an idea currently being discussed.
The physical-distance contrast
With an ordinary singular count noun, Thai commonly uses noun + classifier + demonstrative.
หนังสือเล่มนี้ผมกำลังอ่านอยู่ครับ
nangsue lem ni phom kamlang an yu khrap
I'm currently reading this book. (polite, male speaker; near/current book)
หนังสือเล่มนั้นเป็นของคุณค่ะ
nangsue lem nan pen khong khun kha
That book is yours. (polite, female speaker; farther/contrasted book)
หนังสือเล่มโน้นเป็นของอาจารย์ครับ
nangsue lem non pen khong achan khrap
That book way over there belongs to the professor. (polite, male speaker; visibly remote book)
เล่ม is the classifier for books. The demonstrative follows it. English begins with this/that; Thai first identifies the noun domain, then packages the referent through classifier and distance.
| Distance | Count-noun frame | Place/topic frame | Core value |
|---|---|---|---|
| near/current | เสื้อ + ตัว + นี้ | ร้านนี้ / เรื่องนี้ | this, current |
| farther/separated | เสื้อ + ตัว + นั้น | ร้านนั้น / เรื่องนั้น | that, previously distinguished |
| visibly remote | เสื้อ + ตัว + โน้น | ร้านโน้น / บ้านหลังโน้น | that way over there |
| bare noun | เสื้อ | ร้าน / เรื่อง | number and definiteness from context |
Classifier position and number
For one identified countable item, Thai normally omits the numeral หนึ่ง and uses the classifier plus demonstrative: เสื้อตัวนี้ “this shirt.” When an exact number matters, the numeral comes before the classifier.
เสื้อสองตัวนี้ลดราคาค่ะ
suea song tua ni lot rakha kha
These two shirts are discounted. (polite, female shop staff; exact number)
รถสามคันนั้นจอดผิดที่ครับ
rot sam khan nan chot phit thi khrap
Those three cars are parked in the wrong place. (polite, male speaker)
The order is noun–number–classifier–demonstrative. นี้ and นั้น do not become plural; the numeral supplies exact number. In the full noun–classifier–demonstrative frame, an unnumbered classifier normally individuates one referent: เสื้อตัวนี้ “this shirt.” Direct noun + demonstrative phrases can leave number to context, but the demonstrative itself never carries English-style singular/plural inflection.
Classifier choice remains lexical: ตัว for clothing, คัน for vehicles, หลัง for houses, and เล่ม for books. อัน is not a universal substitute. The classifier-demonstrative order page develops when the classifier is required and when other structures occur.
When no classifier appears
Thai also uses noun + demonstrative directly. Place nouns, time expressions, mass-like nouns, topics, and many highly conventional combinations readily occur without an overt classifier.
ร้านนี้เปิดถึงสี่ทุ่มค่ะ
ran ni poet thueng si thum kha
This shop is open until 10 p.m. (polite, female speaker; place noun directly modified)
น้ำนี้ดื่มได้ไหมครับ
nam ni duem dai mai khrap
Is this water safe to drink? (polite, male question; substance construed directly)
This does not mean classifiers are optional everywhere. A visible individual book naturally favors หนังสือเล่มนี้, while น้ำนี้ treats water as a substance or current sample. Thai chooses a construal; it does not apply one blanket deletion rule.
Bare nouns in articleless Thai
Thai has no obligatory articles matching English a/an/the. A bare noun can be new, familiar, singular, plural, or generic according to the predicate and context.
ซื้อหนังสือมาแล้วค่ะ
sue nangsue ma laeo kha
I've bought a book/books. (polite, female speaker; bare noun, quantity recoverable or unimportant)
ซื้อหนังสือเล่มนี้มาแล้วค่ะ
sue nangsue lem ni ma laeo kha
I've bought this book. (polite, female speaker; specific proximal referent)
The demonstrative adds a deictic or contrastive anchor; it does not serve as a compulsory translation of English the. If both speakers already know which book is meant, bare หนังสือ may be enough.
Discourse distance
The same system organizes talk. เรื่องนี้ is the matter currently in focus. เรื่องนั้น is a matter already mentioned, set aside, or contrasted with the current one.
เรื่องนี้ต้องคุยกันวันนี้ครับ
rueang ni tong khui kan wan ni khrap
We need to discuss this matter today. (polite, male speaker; current issue)
เรื่องนั้นค่อยคุยพรุ่งนี้นะคะ
rueang nan khoi khui phrung ni na kha
Let's discuss that matter tomorrow. (polite, female speaker; displaced topic)
โน้น is strongest as a remote spatial pointer. It can support a mentally distant scene when context makes that construal vivid, but it is not the default translation for every earlier topic.
Modifier forms versus independent forms
นี้, นั้น, and โน้น are the core post-noun modifier forms taught here. Independent pointing normally uses นี่ “this/here,” นั่น “that/there,” and โน่น “that over there.” The tone-mark spelling and syntactic slot both change.
นี่คือหนังสือที่คุณหาอยู่ค่ะ
ni khue nangsue thi khun ha yu kha
This is the book you were looking for. (polite, female speaker; independent นี่)
หนังสือเล่มนี้คือเล่มที่คุณหาอยู่ค่ะ
nangsue lem ni khue lem thi khun ha yu kha
This book is the one you were looking for. (polite, female speaker; modifier นี้)
The English translation can look almost identical, but the Thai structures differ. นี่ versus นี้ explains the contrast in detail.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
เอาเสื้อตัวนี้หรือตัวนั้นคะ
ao suea tua ni rue tua nan kha
Would you like this shirt or that one? (polite, female shop staff)
ตัวนี้ครับ ตัวโน้นสีเข้มไปหน่อย
tua ni khrap tua non si khem pai noi
This one, please. The one way over there is a little too dark. (polite, male customer; noun omitted after classifier)
The classifier ตัว remains when เสื้อ is recoverable. คะ follows the female question; ครับ follows the male answer. Neither particle determines distance or number.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English demonstrative-first order
❌ นี้หนังสือเป็นของนิด
Incorrect — modifier นี้ follows the noun or classifier.
✅ หนังสือเล่มนี้เป็นของนิดค่ะ
nangsue lem ni pen khong nit kha
Correct — this book belongs to Nit. (polite, female speaker)
2. Using independent นี่ as the ordinary noun modifier
❌ หนังสือเล่มนี่แพงค่ะ
Incorrect in the neutral modifier pattern — use นี้ after the classifier.
✅ หนังสือเล่มนี้ราคาแพงค่ะ
nangsue lem ni rakha phaeng kha
Correct — this book is expensive. (polite, female speaker)
3. Omitting the classifier from a numbered count noun
❌ เสื้อสองนี้ลดราคา
Incorrect — a numbered clothing noun needs its classifier before the demonstrative.
✅ เสื้อสองตัวนี้ลดราคาครึ่งหนึ่งค่ะ
suea song tua ni lot rakha khrueng nueng kha
Correct — these two shirts are half price. (polite, female shop staff)
4. Using remote modifier โน้น independently
❌ โน้นแพงกว่าครับ
Incorrect in the standard independent pattern — use โน่น for ‘that one over there.’
✅ โน่นแพงกว่าครับ
non phaeng kwa khrap
Correct — that one over there is more expensive. (polite, male speaker; independent remote pointer)
Key Takeaways
นี้, นั้น, and โน้น follow nouns or classifiers and express near/current, farther/separated, and strongly remote reference. With exact number, use noun–number–classifier–demonstrative; with one salient count item, numeral หนึ่ง is normally absent. Some places, times, substances, and conventional phrases take direct noun + demonstrative, while bare nouns rely on context rather than articles. Keep these modifier spellings distinct from independent นี่, นั่น, and โน่น.
