Thai นี่ and นี้ both point to something near or currently salient, and RTGS writes both as ni. Their spelling, tone, and grammar are different. นี่ is an independent pointer or presentative—“this,” “here,” “this is.” นี้ is a modifier placed after a noun or classifier—“this noun.”
English often uses the same written this in both jobs. Thai makes the syntactic contrast visible. Learning the slot is more reliable than relying on romanization, which deliberately omits tone.
Minimal contrast: independent versus modifier
นี่คือกุญแจของผมครับ
ni khue kunchae khong phom khrap
This is my key. (polite, male speaker; independent นี่)
กุญแจดอกนี้เป็นของผมครับ
kunchae dok ni pen khong phom khrap
This key is mine. (polite, male speaker; modifier นี้ after key classifier ดอก)
In the first sentence, นี่ itself fills the pointing position and is followed by คือ. In the second, กุญแจ is the noun, ดอก packages one key, and นี้ modifies that noun phrase. Swapping the spellings is not a stylistic choice.
| Function | Productive pattern | Example meaning |
|---|---|---|
| independent pointer | นี่ + predicate | this/here is... |
| presentative | นี่ + noun phrase | here is / this is... |
| noun modifier | noun + นี้ | this place/topic/substance |
| classifier modifier | noun + classifier + นี้ | this particular countable item |
| numbered set | noun + number + classifier + นี้ | these specified items |
| elliptical item | classifier + นี้ | this one |
Independent นี่
นี่ can be a subject-like deictic expression. It points to an object, place, situation, or current piece of information.
นี่ของใครคะ
ni khong khrai kha
Whose is this? (polite, female question; independent นี่)
นี่ไม่ใช่ห้องที่เราจองไว้ครับ
ni mai chai hong thi rao chong wai khrap
This isn't the room we reserved. (polite, male speaker; current situation/place)
นี่กาแฟของคุณค่ะ
ni kafae khong khun kha
Here is your coffee. (polite, female server; presentative นี่)
The third example presents an item to the addressee. Thai needs no inflected copula or article. นี่ establishes the object in the shared scene, while the noun phrase identifies it.
นี่ can also point to the immediately current discourse: นี่คือปัญหา “This is the problem.” The referent need not be physically held; it must be salient in the speaker's current attention.
Modifier นี้ after nouns and classifiers
นี้ cannot normally stand alone as the neutral “this” pronoun. It closes a noun phrase.
กาแฟแก้วนี้ไม่ร้อนแล้วค่ะ
kafae kaeo ni mai ron laeo kha
This cup of coffee isn't hot anymore. (polite, female speaker; count/container classifier แก้ว)
ร้านนี้รับบัตรเครดิตไหมครับ
ran ni rap bat khredit mai khrap
Does this shop accept credit cards? (polite, male question; place noun directly modified)
เรื่องนี้สำคัญมากค่ะ
rueang ni samkhan mak kha
This matter is very important. (polite, female speaker; current discourse topic)
Individual count nouns often take a classifier: กุญแจดอกนี้, หนังสือเล่มนี้, รถคันนี้. Place nouns and discourse nouns readily occur directly with นี้. This is not random article choice; the noun phrase selects a construction suited to the referent.
The three-distance modifier system is covered in นี้, นั้น, and โน้น.
Classifier ellipsis: อันนี้ and เล่มนี้
A classifier can remain when the noun is understood. อันนี้ means “this one” for contexts where อัน is the accepted classifier; เล่มนี้ means “this one” when the omitted noun uses เล่ม.
อันนี้ของใครคะ
an ni khong khrai kha
Whose is this one? (polite, female question; general classifier plus นี้)
ผมเอาเล่มนี้ครับ
phom ao lem ni khrap
I'll take this one. (polite, male customer; understood book/menu uses เล่ม)
Compare นี่ของใคร and อันนี้ของใคร. Both can point at an object. นี่ is an independent deictic; อันนี้ is a noun phrase built from classifier อัน plus modifier นี้. The classifier version classifies the referent as an item, while นี่ simply points.
Number and specificity
นี้ itself has no singular or plural inflection. In classifier + นี้ with no numeral, however, the classifier normally individuates one referent: เล่มนี้ “this volume.” A numeral-classifier sequence specifies an exact set, and นี้ then makes that set proximal/current.
เอกสารสามฉบับนี้ต้องเซ็นวันนี้ค่ะ
ekkasan sam chabap ni tong sen wan ni kha
These three documents must be signed today. (polite, female staff member)
สองเล่มนี้ราคาเท่ากันครับ
song lem ni rakha thao kan khrap
These two volumes cost the same. (polite, male speaker; noun omitted, number and classifier retained)
The demonstrative follows the classifier. Exact plural number is carried by สามฉบับ or สองเล่ม. In a direct phrase such as เอกสารนี้, without an overt classifier or numeral, number can instead remain contextual.
Bare nouns and articleless reference
Thai does not require a demonstrative simply because English uses the. A bare noun can refer to a known object when context supplies it.
วางกุญแจไว้บนโต๊ะแล้วค่ะ
wang kunchae wai bon to laeo kha
I've put the key on the table. (polite, female speaker; familiar key and table are bare)
Adding กุญแจดอกนี้ would contrast this particular key. Adding นี่ at the start would point to the present situation or introduce the key. Thai packages these meanings through order and context, not an article template.
Colloquial emphatic นี่ after a noun
In informal/emphatic speech, นี่ can follow a noun as a topic or attention marker, as in หนังสือนี่... “this book here/as for this book...”. That construction has different discourse force and prosody from neutral modifier หนังสือเล่มนี้. Beginners should not treat it as permission to substitute นี่ for นี้ in every noun phrase.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
นี่ใช่กระเป๋าของคุณไหมคะ
ni chai krapao khong khun mai kha
Is this your bag? (polite, female staff member; independent นี่)
ใช่ครับ กระเป๋าใบนี้ของผม
chai khrap krapao bai ni khong phom
Yes, this bag is mine. (polite, male customer; modifier นี้ after classifier ใบ)
The question points first; the answer names and classifies the bag. คะ marks the female question and ครับ the male answer, independently of demonstrative choice.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting modifier นี้ before its noun
❌ นี้กุญแจเป็นของคุณต้น
Incorrect — นี้ follows the noun or classifier.
✅ กุญแจดอกนี้เป็นของคุณต้นครับ
kunchae dok ni pen khong khun ton khrap
Correct — this key belongs to Khun Ton. (polite, male speaker)
2. Using modifier นี้ independently before คือ
❌ นี้คือกาแฟของคุณค่ะ
Incorrect in the neutral independent pattern — use นี่ before คือ.
✅ นี่คือกาแฟของคุณค่ะ
ni khue kafae khong khun kha
Correct — this is your coffee. (polite, female server)
3. Using independent นี่ after a classifier
❌ รถคันนี่จอดผิดที่ครับ
Incorrect in the neutral modifier construction — the classifier is followed by นี้.
✅ รถคันนี้จอดผิดที่ครับ
rot khan ni chot phit thi khrap
Correct — this car is parked in the wrong place. (polite, male speaker)
4. Copying English order in a numbered phrase
❌ นี้สามเอกสารต้องเซ็นก่อนเที่ยง
Incorrect — Thai places noun, numeral, classifier, then demonstrative.
✅ เอกสารสามฉบับนี้ต้องเซ็นก่อนเที่ยงค่ะ
ekkasan sam chabap ni tong sen kon thiang kha
Correct — these three documents must be signed before noon. (polite, female staff member)
Key Takeaways
นี่ is an independent or presentative proximal pointer; นี้ is a post-noun or post-classifier modifier. Both appear as ni in RTGS, so spelling and syntactic position matter. Count nouns commonly use noun–classifier–นี้, numbered sets use noun–number–classifier–นี้, and classifiers can survive noun ellipsis. Bare nouns need no English-style article, and informal topic-marker นี่ should not be confused with the neutral modifier construction.
