Thai นั่น and นั้น both direct attention away from the speaker's immediate “this” space, and RTGS writes both as nan. Their tones, spellings, and syntactic jobs differ. นั่น points independently—“that,” “there,” “that is.” นั้น modifies a noun or classifier after it—“that noun.”
The contrast is structural, not an optional tone-mark variation. English that hides the difference, so learners must watch what comes before and after the Thai form.
Minimal contrast
นั่นคือรถของเราครับ
nan khue rot khong rao khrap
That is our car. (polite, male speaker; independent นั่น)
รถคันนั้นเป็นของเราครับ
rot khan nan pen khong rao khrap
That car is ours. (polite, male speaker; modifier นั้น after vehicle classifier คัน)
In the first sentence, นั่น is the independent pointer before คือ. In the second, รถ is the noun, คัน classifies one vehicle, and นั้น closes the noun phrase. Both can point to the same car, but they package the information differently.
| Function | Productive pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| independent pointer | นั่น + predicate | that/there is... |
| identification | นั่น + คือ + noun phrase | that is... |
| direct noun modifier | noun + นั้น | that place/time/topic |
| classifier modifier | noun + classifier + นั้น | that particular item |
| numbered set | noun + number + classifier + นั้น | those specified items |
| noun ellipsis | classifier + นั้น | that one |
Independent นั่น
นั่น can point to an object, place, person, situation, or earlier statement as a whole.
นั่นอะไรคะ
nan arai kha
What's that? (polite, female question; independent pointer)
นั่นไม่ใช่ทางไปสถานีครับ
nan mai chai thang pai sathani khrap
That isn't the way to the station. (polite, male speaker; spatially pointed route)
นั่นคือเหตุผลที่ดิฉันโทรมาค่ะ
nan khue hetphon thi dichan tho ma kha
That is why I called. (formal-polite, female speaker; previous information summarized)
The third shows discourse deixis: นั่น points not to a physical object but to a reason established in prior talk. Independent forms can package a whole situation without an overt noun.
Modifier นั้น
นั้น follows the noun or classifier it identifies.
บ้านหลังนั้นไม่มีคนอยู่ค่ะ
ban lang nan mai mi khon yu kha
No one lives in that house. (polite, female speaker; house classifier หลัง)
ร้านนั้นปิดวันจันทร์ครับ
ran nan pit wan chan khrap
That shop is closed on Mondays. (polite, male speaker; place noun directly modified)
เรื่องนั้นผมยังตอบไม่ได้ครับ
rueang nan phom yang top mai dai khrap
I can't answer that matter yet. (polite, male speaker; discourse topic set apart)
Countable individual houses naturally use classifier หลัง. Place noun ร้าน and discourse noun เรื่อง readily take นั้น directly. This variation reflects noun-phrase construction and construal, not an English article rule.
The wider three-degree system, including remote โน้น, is explained in นี้, นั้น, and โน้น.
Discourse distance: เรื่องนั้น and ตอนนั้น
Modifier นั้น can retrieve something previously mentioned or locate an event in a non-current time frame.
ตอนนั้นผมยังทำงานอยู่เชียงใหม่ครับ
ton nan phom yang tham ngan yu chiang mai khrap
At that time I was still working in Chiang Mai. (polite, male speaker; past time frame)
วันนั้นฝนตกหนักมากค่ะ
wan nan fon tok nak mak kha
It rained very heavily that day. (polite, female speaker; previously identified day)
ข้อเสนอนั้นน่าสนใจ แต่เราต้องดูงบประมาณก่อนค่ะ
khosanoe nan na sonchai tae rao tong du ngoppraman kon kha
That proposal is interesting, but we must look at the budget first. (polite workplace, female spokesperson)
English that can sound purely spatial. Thai นั้น extends naturally to recalled times, previous proposals, and topics not in the current “this” center. It does not encode past tense: ตอนนั้น supplies a time frame, while the uninflected verb and context locate the event.
Number and classifier ellipsis
นั้น has no singular or plural inflection. In classifier + นั้น with no numeral, the classifier normally individuates one referent: คันนั้น “that vehicle.” Exact plural number appears before the classifier, and the noun can disappear when understood.
เก้าอี้สี่ตัวนั้นจองไว้แล้วค่ะ
kao i si tua nan chong wai laeo kha
Those four chairs have already been reserved. (polite, female staff member)
ผมเลือกคันนั้นครับ
phom lueak khan nan khrap
I'll choose that one. (polite, male speaker; understood vehicle uses classifier คัน)
The order is noun–number–classifier–นั้น. In คันนั้น, the noun รถ is omitted but its classifier survives, letting the listener construe the referent as a vehicle or handled object licensed by context.
Bare nouns and specificity
Thai does not need นั้น wherever English uses the. A bare noun may already be familiar.
วางกระเป๋าไว้ข้างประตูแล้วครับ
wang krapao wai khang pratu laeo khrap
I've put the bag by the door. (polite, male speaker; familiar bag is bare)
วางกระเป๋าใบนั้นไว้ข้างประตูแล้วครับ
wang krapao bai nan wai khang pratu laeo khrap
I've put that bag by the door. (polite, male speaker; contrasted distal bag)
The demonstrative adds contrast or pointing. It is not an article. Number remains contextual unless a numeral or other quantity expression appears.
นั่น, นั้น, and remote โน่น/โน้น
Independent นั่น and modifier นั้น cover the ordinary “that” space. For something conspicuously farther away, independent โน่น or modifier โน้น is available.
โน่นคืออาคารที่เราจะไปครับ
non khue akhan thi rao cha pai khrap
That building way over there is where we're going. (polite, male speaker; independent remote โน่น)
อาคารหลังโน้นคือโรงพยาบาลค่ะ
akhan lang non khue rongphayaban kha
That building way over there is the hospital. (polite, female speaker; remote modifier โน้น)
Distance is construed, not calculated. Gesture and visibility are often decisive.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
นั่นใช่กระเป๋าของคุณไหมคะ
nan chai krapao khong khun mai kha
Is that your bag? (polite, female staff member; independent นั่น)
ไม่ใช่ครับ กระเป๋าใบนั้นของผม
mai chai khrap krapao bai nan khong phom
No, that bag is mine. (polite, male customer; modifier นั้น after classifier ใบ)
The first turn points independently; the answer names and classifies the bag. คะ and ครับ follow the speakers, not the demonstrative.
Common Mistakes
1. Using modifier นั้น independently before คือ
❌ นั้นคือรถที่เราจองไว้ครับ
Incorrect in the neutral independent pattern — use นั่น before คือ.
✅ นั่นคือรถที่เราจองไว้ครับ
nan khue rot thi rao chong wai khrap
Correct — that is the car we reserved. (polite, male speaker)
2. Using independent นั่น after a classifier
❌ บ้านหลังนั่นไม่มีคนอยู่มาหลายปีแล้ว
Incorrect in the neutral modifier construction — use นั้น after classifier หลัง.
✅ บ้านหลังนั้นไม่มีคนอยู่มาหลายปีแล้วค่ะ
ban lang nan mai mi khon yu ma lai pi laeo kha
Correct — no one has lived in that house for years. (polite, female speaker)
3. Copying English demonstrative-first order
❌ นั้นร้านปิดวันจันทร์
Incorrect — modifier นั้น follows the noun.
✅ ร้านนั้นปิดทุกวันจันทร์ครับ
ran nan pit thuk wan chan khrap
Correct — that shop is closed every Monday. (polite, male speaker)
4. Putting the demonstrative before numeral and classifier
❌ เก้าอี้นั้นสี่ตัวจองไว้แล้ว
Incorrect for ‘those four chairs’ — number and classifier precede นั้น.
✅ เก้าอี้สี่ตัวนั้นมีคนนั่งแล้วค่ะ
kao i si tua nan mi khon nang laeo kha
Correct — those four chairs are already occupied. (polite, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
นั่น is an independent distal pointer; นั้น is a distal modifier after a noun or classifier. Both romanize as nan, so syntax and Thai spelling carry the contrast. นั้น can retrieve a physical object, an earlier topic, or a past time frame without itself marking tense or an article. Number precedes the classifier, noun ellipsis can leave classifier + นั้น, and strongly remote reference uses independent โน่น versus modifier โน้น.
