Thai uses the same demonstrative system to point through conversation as it uses to point through physical space. เรื่องนี้ can foreground “this matter” as the present or upcoming focus, while เรื่องนั้น can resume “that matter” from earlier or set it apart from the current line of talk. Entire claims can also be treated as conceptual objects with independent นี่ and นั่น.
This is discourse deixis: language locates information relative to the speaker's current focus. It is not a mechanical rule that นี้ is emotionally close or positive and นั้น negative or dismissive. Speakers continually reorganize what counts as “here” in the conversation.
The minimal contrast: current versus resumed
Compare two ways of locating a topic. The noun เรื่อง comes first, followed by the demonstrative modifier.
เรื่องนี้ขอคุยก่อนนะครับ
rueang ni kho khui kon na khrap
I'd like to discuss this matter first. (polite, male speaker; moving it into current focus)
เรื่องนั้นคุยกันจบเมื่อวานแล้วค่ะ
rueang nan khui kan chop muea wan laeo kha
We finished discussing that matter yesterday. (polite, female speaker; resumed prior topic)
In the first sentence, นี้ instructs the listener to treat the matter as live now. In the second, นั้น connects to an already accessible matter and keeps it outside the current time frame. But the same earlier matter could become เรื่องนี้ as soon as the speaker makes it the main topic again.
| Productive slot | With นี้ | With นั้น | Likely discourse effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| เรื่อง + demonstrative | เรื่องนี้ | เรื่องนั้น | current matter / previously separated matter |
| ประเด็น + demonstrative | ประเด็นนี้ | ประเด็นนั้น | point under focus / point resumed |
| ข้อเสนอ + demonstrative | ข้อเสนอนี้ | ข้อเสนอนั้น | current proposal / contrasted proposal |
| independent form | นี่ | นั่น | this whole situation / that whole situation |
| bare noun | ข้อเสนอ | identity recovered without overt pointing | |
Looking backward and looking forward
นั้น readily retrieves material already mentioned. A speaker can summarize a prior suggestion as แนวคิดนั้น, ask about คำถามนั้น, or contrast an earlier plan with a new one.
แนวคิดนั้นน่าสนใจ แต่ต้องดูงบประมาณก่อนครับ
naeo khit nan na sonchai tae tong du ngoppraman kon khrap
That idea is interesting, but we need to look at the budget first. (polite, male speaker; prior idea resumed)
คำถามนั้นยังไม่มีคำตอบชัดเจนค่ะ
khamtham nan yang mai mi khamtop chat chen kha
That question still has no clear answer. (polite, female speaker; accessible earlier question)
นี้ often presents what the speaker is about to develop. Formal and semi-formal speech uses frames such as ประเด็นนี้ “this point” and ดังนี้ “as follows” to keep the coming material in current focus.
ประเด็นนี้มีสองส่วนครับ ส่วนแรกคือค่าใช้จ่าย
praden ni mi song suan khrap suan raek khue kha chai chai
This point has two parts; the first is cost. (polite, male presentation)
เหตุผลมีดังนี้ค่ะ ลูกค้าต้องการเวลาเพิ่ม
hetphon mi dang ni kha luk kha tongkan wela phoem
The reasons are as follows: the client needs more time. (polite, female presentation)
ดังนี้ is a conventional formal or semi-formal forward-pointing expression. It is structurally different from ดังกล่าว, the formal written anaphor covered on the ดังกล่าว page.
Modifier order and classifier order
Discourse nouns such as เรื่อง, ประเด็น, and แนวคิด commonly take นี้ or นั้น directly. When a speaker singles out one physical copy or one classified item, the classifier precedes the demonstrative: รายงานฉบับนี้, not นี้รายงาน and not รายงานนี้ฉบับ.
รายงานฉบับนี้ขยายประเด็นที่เราคุยกันค่ะ
raingan chabap ni khayai praden thi rao khui kan kha
This report expands on the point we discussed. (polite, female speaker; one current document)
ข้อเสนอทั้งสามข้อนั้นผู้บริหารยังไม่อนุมัติครับ
khosanoe thang sam kho nan phuborihan yang mai anumat khrap
Management has not approved those three proposals. (polite, male speaker; exact set resumed)
The demonstrative itself does not mark singular or plural. Number comes from numerals, quantifiers, and classifiers; in the second example, ทั้งสามข้อ packages a set of three before นั้น locates the set in discourse.
Independent นี่ and นั่น for whole situations
Independent นี่ and นั่น can refer not merely to an object but to a fact, behavior, or result just made salient. English may translate them as this/that, this fact, or even what happened.
นี่คือเหตุผลที่ต้องเลื่อนประชุมครับ
ni khue hetphon thi tong luean prachum khrap
This is why we have to postpone the meeting. (polite, male speaker; current explanation as a whole)
นั่นไม่ใช่สิ่งที่ฉันหมายถึงค่ะ
nan mai chai sing thi chan mai thueng kha
That isn't what I mean. (polite, female speaker; prior interpretation as a whole)
Do not replace these with modifier นี้/นั้น after nothing. Conversely, after a noun, use the modifier: สิ่งนี้, not สิ่งนี่ in the neutral noun-modifying pattern. The distinction between spelling and slot is developed in นี่ versus นี้.
Bare nouns and accessible topics
Thai has no obligatory equivalent of English the. Once a topic is uniquely recoverable, a bare noun can continue it without นี้ or นั้น. Repeating the demonstrative every time may sound needlessly contrastive.
อ่านข้อเสนอแล้วค่ะ เนื้อหาชัดเจนดี
an khosanoe laeo kha nueaha chat chen di
I've read the proposal; the content is quite clear. (polite, female speaker; bare nouns recoverable from context)
ข้อเสนอนั้นชัดเจน แต่ประเด็นนี้ยังต้องแก้ครับ
khosanoe nan chat chen tae praden ni yang tong kae khrap
That proposal is clear, but this point still needs revision. (polite, male speaker; explicit contrast)
The second sentence uses demonstratives because it contrasts two discourse objects. In the first, context identifies the proposal and its content without an article. Thai packages accessibility through prior mention, topic continuity, omission, and noun-phrase order—not a covert the.
Stance is possible, but not encoded absolutely
Speakers can exploit distance metaphorically. ความคิดนั้น may create detachment, and ความคิดนี้ may present an idea as personally adopted or currently endorsed. Yet intonation and surrounding words create that stance; นั้น itself does not mean “bad,” and นี้ itself does not mean “approved.”
ผมเห็นด้วยกับหลักการนั้นครับ
phom hen duai kap lakkan nan khrap
I agree with that principle. (polite, male speaker; นั้น is not negative)
แผนนี้เสี่ยงเกินไปค่ะ
phaen ni siang koen pai kha
This plan is too risky. (polite, female speaker; นี้ is not positive)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ข้อเสนอที่ส่งเมื่อวานต้องแก้ตรงไหนบ้างคะ
khosanoe thi song muea wan tong kae trong nai bang kha
What needs changing in the proposal sent yesterday? (polite, female question; referent established descriptively)
ข้อเสนอนั้นใช้ได้ครับ แต่ประเด็นนี้ขอพักไว้ก่อน
khosanoe nan chai dai khrap tae praden ni kho phak wai kon
That proposal works, but let's set this point aside for now. (polite, male reply; resumed proposal and current point)
Neither turn requires an overt I or we. The participants and decision-makers are recoverable, so Thai omits them. คะ marks the woman's polite question; ครับ marks the man's polite response.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English pre-noun order
❌ นี้ประเด็นสำคัญมากค่ะ
Incorrect — modifier นี้ follows the discourse noun.
✅ ประเด็นนี้สำคัญมากค่ะ
praden ni samkhan mak kha
This point is very important. (polite, female speaker)
2. Treating นี้ as positive and นั้น as negative
❌ ใช้นี้เมื่อเห็นด้วยและใช้นั้นเมื่อไม่เห็นด้วยเสมอ
Incorrect rule — agreement and evaluation come from context, not the demonstrative alone.
✅ ผมไม่เห็นด้วยกับข้อเสนอนี้ครับ
phom mai hen duai kap khosanoe ni khrap
I disagree with this proposal. (polite, male speaker; negative stance with นี้)
3. Using independent นั่น after a noun
❌ เรื่องนั่นจบแล้วค่ะ
Incorrect in the neutral modifier construction — use นั้น after เรื่อง.
✅ เรื่องนั้นจบไปแล้วค่ะ
rueang nan chop pai laeo kha
That matter is over now. (polite, female speaker)
4. Adding an English-style tense auxiliary
❌ เรื่องนั้นเป็นได้จบแล้ว
Incorrect — Thai does not form English present perfect with เป็น plus ได้.
✅ เราคุยเรื่องนั้นเรียบร้อยแล้วครับ
rao khui rueang nan riap roi laeo khrap
We've finished discussing that matter. (polite, male speaker; completion shown lexically and by แล้ว)
Key Takeaways
Discourse นี้ keeps an idea in current or upcoming focus; นั้น commonly resumes or separates accessible prior material. Their interpretation remains context-dependent, not inherently affectionate or dismissive. Put modifier forms after nouns or classifiers, use นี่/นั่น independently, let numerals and classifiers express number, and omit both demonstratives and pronouns when discourse already identifies the referent.
