ดังกล่าว in Formal Written Reference

ดังกล่าว means “aforementioned” or “referred to above.” It is a (formal) written anaphor: after a report, notice, contract, news story, or academic text introduces a referent, noun + ดังกล่าว retrieves that referent precisely. Thus บุคคลดังกล่าว is “the aforementioned person” and มาตรการดังกล่าว is “the measure just described.”

ดังกล่าว belongs after the noun or full counted phrase, not before it. It is not an elegant-sounding replacement for every conversational นั้น, and it does not normally point at something merely visible. Its meaning depends on an accessible textual antecedent.

The core contrast: ordinary pointing versus formal retrieval

Compare an ordinary spoken reference with the style expected in a report.

บริษัทนั้นยังไม่ได้ตอบค่ะ

borisat nan yang mai dai top kha

That company hasn't replied yet. (polite, female speaker; ordinary conversation)

บริษัทดังกล่าวยังไม่ได้ชี้แจงต่อสาธารณชน

borisat dang klao yang mai dai chi chaeng to satharanachon

The aforementioned company has not yet issued a public explanation. (formal news/report style)

Both expressions retrieve an accessible company, but their registers differ. บริษัทนั้น fits speech and ordinary prose; บริษัทดังกล่าว tells the reader to search the preceding text for the company already identified. In formal English, the aforementioned company works similarly; everyday English usually says that company or repeats its name.

Productive formal slotNatural phraseWhat it retrieves
person + ดังกล่าวบุคคลดังกล่าวthe person previously identified
institution + ดังกล่าวหน่วยงานดังกล่าวthe agency previously introduced
event + ดังกล่าวเหตุการณ์ดังกล่าวthe event already described
proposition + ดังกล่าวข้อเสนอดังกล่าวthe proposal already stated
noun + number + classifier + ดังกล่าวเอกสารสองฉบับดังกล่าวthe two previously specified documents
💡
Before writing ดังกล่าว, ask “where was this referent introduced?” If you cannot point to a clear earlier noun phrase or description, ดังกล่าว lacks the backward link that licenses it.

It follows the material it identifies

Thai noun phrases are head-initial. ดังกล่าว comes after the referenced noun, and a numeral-classifier unit comes between the noun and ดังกล่าว when an exact set is meant.

ผู้สมัครดังกล่าวมีคุณสมบัติครบถ้วนตามประกาศ

phusamak dang klao mi khunnasombat khrop thuan tam prakat

The aforementioned applicant has all the qualifications required by the announcement. (formal administrative writing)

เอกสารสองฉบับดังกล่าวต้องลงนามภายในวันศุกร์

ekkasan song chabap dang klao tong long nam phainai wan suk

The two aforementioned documents must be signed by Friday. (formal administrative writing)

บริษัททั้งสามแห่งดังกล่าวยอมรับเงื่อนไขเดียวกัน

borisat thang sam haeng dang klao yomrap ngueankhai diao kan

All three aforementioned companies accepted the same conditions. (formal report style)

The order in the last example is noun + ทั้ง + number + classifier + ดังกล่าว. ดังกล่าว does not itself mark singular or plural; the numeral and classifier package the exact set. With no number, surrounding discourse supplies number just as it does with a bare noun.

This differs from the ordinary demonstrative construction เอกสารสองฉบับนั้น. Both put the locating expression late, but ดังกล่าว explicitly signals textual anaphora and formal register. The classifier–demonstrative page explains the everyday pattern with นี้ and นั้น.

What can serve as the antecedent

The antecedent may be a person, physical object, institution, event, proposal, behavior, or whole situation. It need not repeat exactly the same words, but the intended link must be unambiguous.

เมื่อคืนเกิดไฟไหม้ที่ตลาด เหตุการณ์ดังกล่าวทำให้ร้านค้าปิดหลายแห่ง

muea khuen koet fai mai thi talat hetkan dang klao thamhai ran kha pit lai haeng

A fire occurred at the market last night. The incident caused many shops to close. (formal news style)

คณะกรรมการเสนอให้ขยายเวลา ข้อเสนอดังกล่าวจะเข้าสู่การพิจารณาพรุ่งนี้

khanakammakan sanoe hai khayai wela khosanoe dang klao cha khao su kan phicharana phrung ni

The committee proposed extending the deadline. The proposal will be considered tomorrow. (formal institutional writing)

In each pair, the first sentence makes an entity available and the second retrieves it. Thai does not add an article equivalent to the. Formal definiteness comes from prior mention plus the anaphor; in ordinary prose, repetition, a name, นั้น, or a bare noun may do the same work.

💡
ดังกล่าว can retrieve a whole prior event by placing it after a summary noun such as เหตุการณ์ “event,” การตัดสินใจ “decision,” or การเปลี่ยนแปลง “change.” The noun tells the reader how to construe the earlier material.

Register: formal writing, not elevated conversation

ดังกล่าว is productive in (formal) legal, administrative, journalistic, and academic prose. It helps writers avoid repeating long identifying descriptions. In ordinary (informal) conversation, however, it sounds bureaucratic or humorously over-formal. Speakers normally use นี้, นั้น, the person's name or role, or zero reference.

สัญญาดังกล่าวมีผลบังคับใช้ตั้งแต่วันที่ลงนาม

sanya dang klao mi phon bangkhap chai tangtae wan thi long nam

The aforementioned contract takes effect from the date of signing. (formal legal style)

อาจารย์คนนั้นส่งข้อความมาแล้วค่ะ

achan khon nan song khokhwam ma laeo kha

That teacher has sent a message already. (polite, female conversation; ordinary alternative)

Do not infer that formal writing must use ดังกล่าว at every later mention. Once continuity is clear, a bare noun can be smoother. Repeating ดังกล่าว in every sentence creates heavy bureaucratic prose, just as repeating aforementioned does in English.

Physical deixis and discourse deixis remain distinct

นี้/นั้น/โน้น can direct shared visual attention. ดังกล่าว normally cannot: seeing an unfamiliar folder on the table does not make เอกสารดังกล่าว appropriate. The document must have been mentioned in the text or formally established in the discourse.

กรุณาเซ็นเอกสารฉบับนี้ค่ะ

karuna sen ekkasan chabap ni kha

Please sign this document. (polite, female speaker; visible/current document)

กรุณาส่งเอกสารดังกล่าวให้ฝ่ายกฎหมาย

karuna song ekkasan dang klao hai fai kotmai

Please send the aforementioned document to the legal department. (formal written instruction; document previously identified)

The first expression uses a classifier plus demonstrative to pick a visible or current copy. The second retrieves the document by prior formal mention and does not need a classifier unless number or copy-level individuation matters.

Ordinary-polite dialogue about formal wording

People can, of course, say the word ดังกล่าว while discussing how to write a document. That does not make it a neutral conversational pointer.

ในรายงานควรเขียนว่าโครงการนี้หรือโครงการดังกล่าวคะ

nai raingan khuan khian wa khrongkan ni rue khrongkan dang klao kha

In the report, should I write ‘this project’ or ‘the aforementioned project’? (polite, female question)

ถ้าอ้างถึงโครงการที่กล่าวมาก่อน ใช้โครงการดังกล่าวครับ

tha ang thueng khrongkan thi klao ma kon chai khrongkan dang klao khrap

If it refers to the project mentioned earlier, use ‘the aforementioned project.’ (polite, male reply)

The female question ends in คะ; the male response ends in ครับ. The omitted subjects are obvious from the editing task. No English-style obligatory I or you is needed.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting ดังกล่าว before the noun

❌ ดังกล่าวบุคคลต้องยื่นคำร้องใหม่

Incorrect — Thai places ดังกล่าว after its noun phrase.

✅ บุคคลดังกล่าวต้องยื่นคำร้องใหม่

bukkhon dang klao tong yuen khamrong mai

The aforementioned person must submit a new application. (formal administrative writing)

2. Using it without an antecedent

❌ เปิดรายงานด้วยหน่วยงานดังกล่าวได้เลย

Incorrect advice — the first mention has not established which agency is meant.

✅ รายงานฉบับนี้ศึกษาการทำงานของกรมชลประทาน

raingan chabap ni sueksa kan thamngan khong krom chonlaprathan

This report studies the work of the Royal Irrigation Department. (formal opening that identifies the agency first)

3. Using bureaucratic reference in a café order

❌ ขอกาแฟดังกล่าวหนึ่งแก้วครับ

Unnatural — ดังกล่าว is not the ordinary conversational equivalent of ‘that.’

✅ ขอเครื่องดื่มแก้วนั้นครับ

kho khrueang duem kaeo nan khrap

I'd like that drink, please. (polite, male customer; ordinary pointing)

4. Leaving the anaphor without a noun

❌ ดังกล่าวต้องส่งหลักฐานเพิ่มค่ะ

Incorrect in this intended use — ดังกล่าว does not normally stand alone as ‘that person.’

✅ ผู้ยื่นคำขอดังกล่าวต้องส่งหลักฐานเพิ่มค่ะ

phu yuen khamkho dang klao tong song lakthan phoem kha

The aforementioned applicant must submit additional evidence. (formal administrative style)

Key Takeaways

ดังกล่าว is a post-nominal, backward-looking device of formal writing. It retrieves an already established person, institution, object, event, or proposition; a numeral and classifier can precede it when an exact set matters. It neither replaces conversational นั้น nor points to an unmentioned visible object. Prior text supplies definiteness, classifiers and numerals supply individuation and number, and context licenses omission on later mentions.
