Thai vague quantity is not built by placing a single equivalent of English many or few before every noun. หลาย normally fills the numeral/quantifier slot before a classifier: หนังสือหลายเล่ม “many/several books.” น้อย more readily behaves as a quantity predicate or complement: มีหนังสือน้อย “there are few books,” คนมาน้อย “few people came.” ไม่กี่ + classifier presents a small bounded count, while formal จำนวนน้อย and ปริมาณน้อย distinguish countable entities from substances or abstract amounts.
These expressions leave an exact number open, but they do not mean the same thing. หลาย highlights a substantial plurality, น้อย evaluates an amount as low, and ไม่กี่ says the number is not large—often “a few” rather than an emphatic “hardly any.”
The central contrast
The following pair describes opposite crowd levels, but the most natural structures are asymmetric.
วันนี้มีลูกค้าหลายคนค่ะ
wan ni mi luk kha lai khon kha
There are many/several customers today. (polite, female speaker; หลาย before classifier คน)
ช่วงเช้ามีลูกค้าน้อยครับ
chuang chao mi luk kha noi khrap
There were few customers in the morning. (polite, male speaker; น้อย evaluates the quantity)
Thai does not require หลาย and น้อย to occupy identical slots merely because English contrasts many and few. หลาย participates in the classifier count frame. น้อย is highly natural after the noun or clause, often with มี or another predicate.
| Meaning | Productive pattern | Natural example phrase | Nuance |
|---|---|---|---|
| many/several count items | noun + หลาย + classifier | รายงานหลายฉบับ | substantial nonspecific plurality |
| low count in context | มี + noun + น้อย | มีผู้สมัครน้อย | quantity evaluated as low |
| few participants in an event | noun + verb + น้อย | คนมาน้อย | few of the relevant people did it |
| a few/not many | noun + ไม่กี่ + classifier | หนังสือไม่กี่เล่ม | small bounded set |
| formal low count | noun + จำนวนน้อย | ผู้เข้าร่วมจำนวนน้อย | formal count framing |
| formal low amount | noun + ปริมาณน้อย | น้ำมันปริมาณน้อย | formal mass/amount framing |
หลาย before a classifier
For countable nouns, noun + หลาย + classifier is the reliable productive order. The classifier still follows lexical convention: คน for people, แห่ง for institutions and places in formal counting, ฉบับ for documents, and วิธี as a classifier-like unit for methods.
คณะกรรมการพิจารณาข้อเสนอหลายข้อแล้วค่ะ
khanakammakan phicharana khosanoe lai kho laeo kha
The committee has considered several proposals. (polite, female speaker; classifier ข้อ)
บริษัทมีสำนักงานหลายแห่งในภาคเหนือครับ
borisat mi samnakngan lai haeng nai phak nuea khrap
The company has several offices in the North. (polite, male speaker; classifier แห่ง)
ปัญหานี้แก้ได้หลายวิธีค่ะ
panha ni kae dai lai withi kha
This problem can be solved in several ways. (polite, female speaker; วิธี names the alternative units)
When the noun is already recoverable, หลาย + classifier can stand alone: หลายคน “many people,” หลายเล่ม “several volumes.” This is classifier ellipsis, not English pre-noun order.
มีคนส่งใบสมัครมาแล้วกี่คนครับ
mi khon song bai samak ma laeo ki khon khrap
How many people have submitted applications so far? (polite, male question)
ส่งมาแล้วหลายคนค่ะ แต่เอกสารครบแค่ไม่กี่คน
song ma laeo lai khon kha tae ekkasan khrop khae mai ki khon
Many have submitted them, but only a few have complete documents. (polite, female reply; head noun omitted)
หลาย does not state an exact threshold. Three can count as หลาย in a choice between two alternatives, while thirty may feel น้อย in a stadium. The comparison class is supplied by expectations and discourse. See noun–number–classifier order for the structural slot that หลาย shares with exact numerals.
น้อย as an amount evaluation
มี + noun + น้อย says that little of something exists or is available. With an event predicate, noun + verb + น้อย says that few members participate or that the action occurs to a low degree. Prosody and context distinguish quantity from other readings.
ปีนี้มีผู้สมัครน้อยกว่าปีที่แล้วครับ
pi ni mi phusamak noi kwa pi thi laeo khrap
There are fewer applicants this year than last year. (polite, male speaker; comparative quantity)
งานวันอาทิตย์คนมาน้อยค่ะ
ngan wan athit khon ma noi kha
Few people came to Sunday's event. (polite, female speaker; low participation)
ช่วงนี้ฉันมีเวลาว่างน้อยมากค่ะ
chuang ni chan mi wela wang noi mak kha
I have very little free time these days. (polite, female self-reference; low amount)
น้อย can also modify quality or degree outside nominal quantity, as in พูดน้อย “speak little” and หวานน้อย “less sweet.” That is why “น้อย = few before a noun” is an inadequate rule. The predicate and semantic type determine whether it measures participants, frequency, degree, or substance.
Formal and literary Thai also has a marked fronted pattern, น้อยคน(นัก) + ที่/จะ.... It foregrounds how exceptional the small group is and is especially common with นัก and a following relative or future clause. This restricted pattern does not make น้อย + any full noun the neutral productive counterpart of หลาย + classifier.
น้อยคนนักที่จะเข้าใจเงื่อนไขนี้
noi khon nak thi cha khao chai ngueankhai ni
Very few people will understand this condition. (formal/literary fronting, not neutral conversational order)
ไม่กี่: a small bounded set
ไม่กี่ + classifier literally frames a quantity as “not many.” It often corresponds to English a few or only a few. It fits count nouns and time units naturally.
เหลือที่นั่งว่างไม่กี่ที่แล้วครับ
luea thi nang wang mai ki thi laeo khrap
Only a few seats are left. (polite, male speaker; small remaining set)
อีกไม่กี่วันก็เปิดเทอมแล้วค่ะ
ik mai ki wan ko poet thoem laeo kha
The term starts in just a few days. (polite, female speaker; small time interval)
มีเพื่อนสนิทไม่กี่คนแต่ไว้ใจกันมากครับ
mi phuean sanit mai ki khon tae wai chai kan mak khrap
I have only a few close friends, but we trust one another a lot. (polite, male speaker)
ไม่กี่ is not simply the negative of หลาย in every pragmatic respect. It often presents the small set neutrally or even positively; น้อย can more strongly evaluate the quantity as insufficient. Tone and words such as แค่ “only” or มาก “very” sharpen the evaluation.
Formal จำนวน and ปริมาณ
จำนวน conceptualizes a count, while ปริมาณ conceptualizes an amount. Both are common in (formal) reports, public notices, and academic prose, but they sound unnecessarily technical in many everyday requests.
การสำรวจครั้งนี้มีผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามจำนวนน้อย
kan samruat khrang ni mi phu top baep soptham chamnuan noi
This survey had a small number of respondents. (formal/academic style)
โรงงานใช้น้ำในปริมาณน้อยลงกว่าปีก่อน
rongngan chai nam nai pariman noi long kwa pi kon
The factory uses a smaller amount of water than last year. (formal report style)
ผู้ตอบแบบสอบถาม are countable people, so จำนวนน้อย is appropriate. น้ำ is a substance, so ปริมาณน้อย is the natural technical framing. In conversation, มีคนตอบน้อย and ใช้น้ำน้อย are simpler.
Bare nouns and contextual number
A bare noun leaves quantity open. ซื้อผลไม้มาแล้ว can describe one kind, several pieces, or a whole bag of fruit. A speaker adds หลาย, ไม่กี่, น้อย, a numeral, or a measure only when that quantity matters.
ซื้อผลไม้มาแล้วค่ะ น่าจะพอสำหรับทุกคน
sue phonlamai ma laeo kha na cha pho samrap thuk khon
I've bought fruit; it should be enough for everyone. (polite, female speaker; bare noun, quantity inferred)
ซื้อส้มมาหลายกิโลครับ เผื่อแขกพรุ่งนี้
sue som ma lai kilo khrap phuea khaek phrung ni
I bought several kilos of oranges in case of guests tomorrow. (polite, male speaker; vague number of measured units)
Thai has no plural inflection on ส้ม and no obligatory article. The measure กิโล packages the relevant units, while context identifies the fruit and expected guests.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
เย็นนี้มีลูกค้าจองกี่คนคะ
yen ni mi luk kha chong ki khon kha
How many customers have reservations this evening? (polite, female question)
หลายคนครับ แต่ยังเหลือโต๊ะว่างไม่กี่ตัว
lai khon khrap tae yang luea to wang mai ki tua
Quite a few, but only a few tables are still free. (polite, male reply; both nouns recoverable)
The reply omits ลูกค้า before หลายคน and does not repeat an English-style subject. Several quantity expressions can coexist because they assess different sets.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting หลาย before the full noun
❌ หลายรายงานยังไม่เสร็จค่ะ
Incorrect neutral count order — place the noun first and include its classifier.
✅ รายงานหลายฉบับยังไม่เสร็จค่ะ
raingan lai chabap yang mai set kha
Several reports are not finished yet. (polite, female speaker)
2. Extending marked น้อยคน to arbitrary nouns
❌ น้อยลูกค้าอยู่ในร้านครับ
Incorrect neutral order — fronted น้อย does not productively precede an arbitrary full noun.
✅ ตอนนี้ในร้านมีลูกค้าน้อยครับ
ton ni nai ran mi luk kha noi khrap
There are few customers in the shop now. (polite, male speaker; neutral predicate order)
3. Dropping the classifier after ไม่กี่
❌ อ่านหนังสือไม่กี่แล้วค่ะ
Incorrect — the small count needs the recoverable noun's classifier.
✅ อ่านหนังสือจบไม่กี่เล่มค่ะ
an nangsue chop mai ki lem kha
I've finished only a few books. (polite, female speaker)
4. Using จำนวน for a mass substance
❌ สูตรนี้ใช้น้ำตาลจำนวนน้อยครับ
Incorrect formal measure choice — sugar is construed as an amount, not a count of entities.
✅ สูตรนี้ใช้น้ำตาลในปริมาณน้อยครับ
sut ni chai namtan nai pariman noi khrap
This recipe uses a small amount of sugar. (polite, male speaker; formal quantity wording)
Key Takeaways
หลาย fills a quantifier slot before a classifier; น้อย commonly evaluates quantity in a predicate; ไม่กี่ + classifier presents a small bounded set. Formal จำนวนน้อย suits counts and ปริมาณน้อย suits amounts. None has a universal numerical cutoff, and bare nouns remain available whenever exact or evaluated quantity is not discourse-relevant.
