Thai อีก adds something beyond a reference point: more items beyond those already counted, another member besides one already known, more time before an event, or a repetition of an action. English spreads these meanings across more, another, other, again, and in another two days. Thai keeps อีก stable and lets its position, the classifier or measure, and the predicate determine the reading.
For an additional exact quantity, the central pattern is noun + อีก + numeral + classifier: หนังสืออีกสองเล่ม “two more books.” When the noun is recoverable, อีก can introduce a classifier phrase by itself: อีกเล่ม “another volume.” It is not an English-style article and does not go before a complete noun phrase indiscriminately.
The minimal contrast: counted versus additional
Without อีก, a numeral gives the total quantity asserted in the phrase. With อีก, the quantity is added to a set or amount already in the discourse.
ต้องใช้เก้าอี้สามตัวครับ
tong chai kao i sam tua khrap
We need three chairs. (polite, male speaker; total quantity stated)
ต้องใช้เก้าอี้อีกสามตัวครับ
tong chai kao i ik sam tua khrap
We need three more chairs. (polite, male speaker; additional quantity)
The existing set need not be named in the same sentence. It can be visible, previously ordered, or inferable from the task. อีก establishes that reference point; it does not itself say what the earlier number was.
| Productive slot | Thai pattern | Typical reading |
|---|---|---|
| additional exact items | noun + อีก + number + classifier | another/more N items |
| recoverable noun | อีก + classifier | one more/another one |
| individuated alternative | noun + อีก + classifier + หนึ่ง | another/a further N |
| time interval | อีก + number + time unit | in/for another interval |
| repetition | verb + อีกครั้ง | do it again/one more time |
| unspecified addition | verb + อีก | more/again, amount from context |
Additional quantity with numerals and classifiers
In a full count noun phrase, อีก precedes the numeral-classifier unit. The classifier remains specific to the noun: เล่ม for books, ใบ for many containers, หลัง for houses, and คน for people.
ขอชามเพิ่มอีกสองใบค่ะ
kho cham phoem ik song bai kha
Could we have two more bowls? (polite, female speaker; additional containers)
ทีมเราต้องการอาสาสมัครอีกห้าคนครับ
thim rao tongkan asamak ik ha khon khrap
Our team needs five more volunteers. (polite, male speaker)
เขาสั่งหนังสืออ้างอิงอีกหนึ่งเล่มค่ะ
khao sang nangsue ang ing ik nueng lem kha
They ordered one additional reference book. (polite, female speaker; exact added count)
เพิ่ม “increase/add” can appear with อีก, as in the bowl example, because the two words do different work: เพิ่ม predicates an increase, while อีก locates the quantity beyond the baseline. Yet เพิ่ม is not required; context can supply the additive relation.
The numeral หนึ่ง is sometimes retained for explicit calculation. In ordinary requests, อีกใบ or อีกเล่ม often expresses “one more” without หนึ่ง because the lone classifier individuates one unit.
น้ำยังไม่พอ ขออีกขวดได้ไหมครับ
nam yang mai pho kho ik khuat dai mai khrap
There still isn't enough water; could we have another bottle? (polite, male question; noun recoverable)
This is classifier ellipsis, not a universal word for “one.” The listener recovers น้ำ from the first clause, and ขวด construes the added unit as a bottle. The classifier-ellipsis page develops when a classifier can carry reference without its noun.
อีก + classifier/noun + หนึ่ง: one further alternative
The sequence อีก + classifier-like noun + หนึ่ง introduces a further member or alternative: อีกคนหนึ่ง “another person,” อีกเรื่องหนึ่ง “another matter,” อีกวิธีหนึ่ง “another method.” With an overt head noun, Thai can say หนังสืออีกเล่มหนึ่ง.
มีอีกเรื่องหนึ่งที่ต้องแจ้งก่อนประชุมค่ะ
mi ik rueang nueng thi tong chaeng kon prachum kha
There is one more matter I need to mention before the meeting. (polite, female speaker)
ลองใช้อีกวิธีหนึ่งดูครับ วิธีเดิมช้าเกินไป
long chai ik withi nueng du khrap withi doem cha koen pai
Try another method; the original method is too slow. (polite, male speaker)
ผมเอากล่องใบนี้กับอีกใบหนึ่งครับ
phom ao klong bai ni kap ik bai nueng khrap
I'll take this box and another one. (polite, male speaker; noun omitted in the second coordinated phrase)
หนึ่ง here supports individuation; the phrase does not answer a calculation question as strongly as อีกหนึ่งเล่ม does. The contrast is real but not absolute in every context: focus and prosody can emphasize counting, and many speakers alternate between อีกเล่ม, อีกหนึ่งเล่ม, and อีกเล่มหนึ่ง according to style and information structure.
Time: more duration or time until an event
With time units, อีก precedes the measure: อีกสองวัน. A durative predicate such as รอ “wait” favors “for another two days,” whereas a future event favors “in two days.” Thai verbs stay uninflected; time phrases and aspectual words locate the event.
ขอเวลาอีกสองวันเพื่อแก้รายงานค่ะ
kho wela ik song wan phuea kae raingan kha
I'd like two more days to revise the report. (polite, female speaker; additional duration)
อีกสองวันช่างจะเข้ามาตรวจครับ
ik song wan chang cha khao ma truat khrap
The technician will come to inspect it in two days. (polite, male speaker; interval until event)
ถ้ายังไม่เสร็จต้องรออีกหนึ่งสัปดาห์ค่ะ
tha yang mai set tong ro ik nueng sapda kha
If it still isn't finished, we'll have to wait another week. (polite, female speaker)
English word order varies between two more days, another week, and in two days. Thai consistently places อีก before the measured quantity, while the clause tells whether the interval is duration or time-to-event.
Repetition and unspecified addition
With an action, อีกครั้ง is “again/one more time.” Bare อีก after a verb can mean “more” or “again” when the missing quantity or action is obvious. This is related to addition, but translating every occurrence as another produces unnatural English and obscures the Thai structure.
ช่วยอธิบายประโยคสุดท้ายอีกครั้งได้ไหมคะ
chuai athibai prayok sutthai ik khrang dai mai kha
Could you explain the last sentence again? (polite, female question)
อาหารอร่อยมาก ขอเพิ่มอีกหน่อยครับ
ahan aroi mak kho phoem ik noi khrap
The food is delicious; could I have a little more? (polite, male speaker; quantity left vague)
อีก also participates in ไม่...อีก “not anymore,” where it scopes over a future repetition: จะไม่เลื่อนอีก “will not postpone it again.” That negative construction is not an “other noun” use, even though the same additive logic—no further occurrence—remains visible.
Bare nouns, specificity, and deixis
A bare noun can introduce an unspecified quantity: ซื้อขนมมา may mean “bought snacks.” Adding อีก requires a prior baseline; adding a demonstrative identifies a particular item. These devices should not be copied from English articles.
ซื้อขนมมาแล้วค่ะ แต่จะซื้ออีกสองชิ้นไว้ให้เด็ก
sue khanom ma laeo kha tae cha sue ik song chin wai hai dek
I've bought some snacks, but I'll buy two more pieces for the children. (polite, female speaker; bare introduction then addition)
เอาเสื้อตัวนั้นกับเสื้ออีกตัวครับ
ao suea tua nan kap suea ik tua khrap
I'll take that shirt and one more shirt. (polite, male customer; definite item plus additional item)
The demonstrative does not mean “the,” and อีก does not mean “an.” Each packages a distinct relation to the discourse: identifiable versus additional.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
รับขนมเพิ่มอีกไหมคะ
rap khanom phoem ik mai kha
Would you like any more snacks? (polite, female shop staff; quantity open)
เอาอีกสองชิ้นครับ ชิ้นหนึ่งไส้ถั่ว อีกชิ้นหนึ่งไส้เผือก
ao ik song chin khrap chin nueng sai thua ik chin nueng sai phueak
Two more pieces, please—one with bean filling and another with taro filling. (polite, male customer)
The noun ขนม disappears in the reply because it is recoverable. Classifier ชิ้น carries the count, and อีกชิ้นหนึ่ง contrasts the second item with the first.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English “two more” order
❌ ต้องใช้แฟ้มสองอีกเล่มค่ะ
Incorrect — อีก comes before the numeral-classifier unit.
✅ ต้องใช้แฟ้มอีกสองเล่มค่ะ
tong chai faem ik song lem kha
We need two more folders. (polite, female speaker)
2. Putting อีก before the full noun as an article
❌ ขออีกกาแฟหนึ่งแก้วครับ
Incorrect neutral order — keep the noun first when counting an additional serving.
✅ ขอกาแฟอีกหนึ่งแก้วครับ
kho kafae ik nueng kaeo khrap
Another cup of coffee, please. (polite, male customer; exact added serving)
3. Omitting the classifier from an additional exact count
❌ เราต้องจองห้องอีกสามค่ะ
Incorrect — an exact count of rooms needs classifier ห้อง.
✅ เราต้องจองห้องอีกสามห้องค่ะ
rao tong chong hong ik sam hong kha
We need to book three more rooms. (polite, female speaker)
4. Assuming อีกสองวัน always means duration
❌ อีกสองวันหมายถึงรอเพิ่มสองวันเสมอ
Incorrect rule — with a future event it can mean ‘in two days.’
✅ อีกสองวันจะประกาศผลครับ
ik song wan cha prakat phon khrap
The results will be announced in two days. (polite, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
อีก locates an addition, alternative, interval, or repetition beyond a contextual baseline. Put it before an additional numeral-classifier unit, use อีก + classifier when the noun is recoverable, and use อีก...หนึ่ง patterns to individuate a further alternative. Predicates decide whether อีกสองวัน means “two more days” or “in two days”; discourse decides what has already been counted.
