อัน is often called the “general classifier,” but general does not mean universal. It naturally individuates many small objects, implements, attachments, and things whose category is left broad: ไม้แขวนเสื้อสองอัน “two clothes hangers,” ของอันนี้ “this thing.” It does not normally replace established classifiers such as คน for people, เล่ม for books, or คัน for vehicles.
The useful principle is specificity. อัน is available when the discourse construes something as a general bounded item and no stronger conventional classifier is required. Choosing it can deliberately background shape or function; choosing a specific classifier can foreground those properties.
Core frames with อัน
| Function | Frame | Example |
|---|---|---|
| count | noun + numeral + อัน | ไม้แขวนเสื้อสามอัน — three clothes hangers |
| demonstrative | noun + อัน + นี้/นั้น | ของอันนี้ — this thing |
| indefinite individual | noun + อัน + หนึ่ง | อุปกรณ์อันหนึ่ง — one piece of equipment |
| ordinal | noun + อัน + ที่ + numeral | ชิ้นส่วนอันที่สอง — the second component |
| ellipsis | อัน + demonstrative/modifier | อันเล็ก — the small one |
ในตู้มีไม้แขวนเสื้อห้าอัน
nai tu mi mai khwaen suea ha an
There are five clothes hangers in the wardrobe. (neutral everyday speech)
ของอันนี้เป็นของใครคะ
khong an ni pen khong khrai kha
Whose is this thing? (polite, female speaker; broad item category)
The first uses noun–number–classifier order. The second uses noun–classifier–demonstrative order; the two instances of ของ have different jobs: the first is the noun “thing,” while the second belongs to เป็นของ “belong to.”
Where อัน is natural
อัน is common with nouns such as ไม้แขวนเสื้อ “clothes hanger” and with broad heads such as ของ “thing/belonging” or อุปกรณ์ “equipment.” Everyday usage varies somewhat by object and situation, but specific conventional classifiers remain the neutral standard where one is strong.
ช่วยหยิบไม้แขวนเสื้ออันนั้นให้หน่อยครับ
chuai yip mai khwaen suea an nan hai noi khrap
Please pass me that clothes hanger. (polite, male speaker)
ฉันต้องใช้อุปกรณ์อีกสองอันค่ะ
chan tong chai upakon ik song an kha
I need two more pieces of equipment. (polite, female speaker; the item type is contextually known)
With an unfamiliar manufactured object, speakers may initially use อัน while treating it as a generic item, then shift to a more informative classifier once its function becomes relevant. That shift changes construal rather than correcting an inflection.
Specific classifiers outrank the fallback
Compare an appropriately general object with nouns that demand conventional categories:
ฉันซื้อไม้บรรทัดสองอัน
chan sue mai banthat song an
I bought two rulers. (informal; typically female speaker; neutral use of general classifier อัน)
ฉันซื้อหนังสือสองเล่ม
chan sue nangsue song lem
I bought two books. (informal; typically female speaker; specific classifier เล่ม)
บริษัทเช่ารถสองคัน
borisat chao rot song khan
The company rented two vehicles. (specific classifier คัน)
Using หนังสือสองอัน or รถสองอัน is not the neutral standard. It may be interpreted as playful, childlike, or evidence that the speaker does not know the conventional classifier. Accurate adult speech selects เล่ม and คัน.
Classifier choice can change the counted unit
With a broad noun such as ของฝาก “gift/souvenir,” อัน can count individual items without emphasizing their internal packaging. ชุด instead counts prepared sets.
ฉันซื้อของฝากสามอัน
chan sue khongfak sam an
I bought three individual souvenirs. (informal; typically female speaker; general item construal)
ฉันซื้อของฝากสามชุด
chan sue khongfak sam chut
I bought three sets of souvenirs. (informal; typically female speaker; set construal)
The real-world total may differ dramatically. อัน and ชุด are not interchangeable synonyms; each defines one countable unit. Choosing classifiers by semantics develops this principle.
Ellipsis with อัน
Once the broad item category is active, อัน can replace the noun.
ฉันชอบของอันเล็กมากกว่า
chan chop khong an lek mak kwa
I prefer the small item. (informal; typically female speaker; full noun phrase)
ฉันชอบอันเล็กมากกว่า
chan chop an lek mak kwa
I prefer the small one. (informal; typically female speaker; ของ omitted; classifier carries broad item reference)
Do not use elliptical อัน merely because English has one. If the active set is books, เล่มเล็ก means “the small one”; if vehicles, คันเล็ก. The classifier maintains reference continuity.
หนึ่ง and ordinal ที่
Numeral–classifier order reports an exact count: อุปกรณ์หนึ่งอัน “one piece of equipment.” Classifier + หนึ่ง introduces one item: อุปกรณ์อันหนึ่ง “a certain piece of equipment.” Classifier + ที่ + numeral establishes rank.
ต้องใช้อุปกรณ์หนึ่งอันเท่านั้นครับ
tong chai upakon nueng an thaonan khrap
Only one piece of equipment is needed. (polite, male speaker; exact count)
มีอุปกรณ์อันหนึ่งเสียอยู่ค่ะ
mi upakon an nueng sia yu kha
One piece of equipment is broken. (polite, female speaker; introduced individual)
ตรวจชิ้นส่วนอันที่สามก่อนครับ
truat chinsuan an thi sam kon khrap
Check the third component first. (polite, male speaker; ordinal)
อันหนึ่ง does not mean “first”; ที่ creates the ordinal. In technical writing, the exact classifier chosen for ชิ้นส่วน may vary with the component's type, but อัน is appropriate when the writer deliberately treats it as a generic bounded component.
Counting dialogue
ต้องใช้ไม้แขวนเสื้อกี่อันคะ
tong chai mai khwaen suea ki an kha
How many clothes hangers do we need? (polite, female speaker)
สี่อันครับ เอาอันสีขาวทั้งหมด
si an khrap ao an si khao thangmot
Four. Use all the white ones. (polite, male speaker; noun omitted)
The answer retains อัน because the active items are hangers. The second อัน supports a color modifier; Thai does not need to repeat the noun or insert an English subject.
Classifier อัน versus formal linking อัน
In (formal/literary) Thai, อัน can also introduce an attributive or relative-like expression, as in ความหวังอันยิ่งใหญ่ “a great hope.” That อัน is not counting an object and cannot be analyzed as the classifier in a numeral phrase.
โครงการนี้เกิดจากความหวังอันยิ่งใหญ่
khrongkan ni koet chak khwamwang an yingyai
This project arose from a great hope. (formal/literary attributive อัน, not a classifier)
Register and construction distinguish the two uses. Counting อัน follows a noun's numeral or supports a demonstrative; linking อัน connects a formal head noun to an elevated modifier.
Common Mistakes
1. Using อัน for a person
❌ นักเรียนสามอันรออยู่
Incorrect and dehumanizing — people take คน.
✅ นักเรียนสามคนรออยู่หน้าห้อง
nakrian sam khon ro yu na hong
Correct — three students are waiting outside the room.
2. Replacing a strong conventional classifier
❌ หนังสือสองอันวางบนโต๊ะ
Incorrect in neutral usage — books take เล่ม.
✅ หนังสือสองเล่มวางอยู่บนโต๊ะค่ะ
nangsue song lem wang yu bon to kha
Correct — two books are on the table. (polite, female speaker)
3. Omitting the classifier after a numeral
❌ ฉันซื้อไม้แขวนเสื้อสาม
Incorrect — the count requires อัน.
✅ ผมซื้อไม้แขวนเสื้อสามอันครับ
phom sue mai khwaen suea sam an khrap
Correct — I bought three clothes hangers. (polite, male speaker)
4. Preposing the demonstrative
❌ นี้ของใช้ไม่ได้
Incorrect for attributive ‘this thing’ — นี้ follows classifier อัน.
✅ ของอันนี้ใช้ไม่ได้ค่ะ
khong an ni chai mai dai kha
Correct — this thing does not work. (polite, female speaker)
5. Confusing the classifier with formal linking อัน
❌ ความหวังอันยิ่งใหญ่มีหนึ่งอัน
Incorrect analysis — the first อัน links a formal modifier and does not count hope as an object.
✅ คำว่าอันในวลีความหวังอันยิ่งใหญ่ทำหน้าที่เชื่อมคำขยาย
kham wa an nai wali khwamwang an yingyai tham nathi chueam kham khayai
Correct — the word อัน in the phrase ความหวังอันยิ่งใหญ่ links the modifier. (formal grammatical explanation)
Key Takeaways
อัน is a productive classifier for genuinely general bounded items, not a universal substitute. Use specific conventional classifiers whenever the noun or construal demands them, retain อัน under ellipsis only when the broad item category remains active, distinguish exact หนึ่งอัน from indefinite อันหนึ่ง and ordinal อันที่หนึ่ง, and keep formal linking อัน separate from counting grammar.
