ชิ้น begins with the concrete idea “piece,” but as a classifier it covers more than fragments. It counts portions of food, components and spare parts, individual products, pieces of furniture, and works treated as separate items: ขนมสามชิ้น “three pieces of dessert,” อะไหล่สองชิ้น “two spare parts,” ผลงานสี่ชิ้น “four works.”
The shared logic is individuation as a piece, portion, component, or item. That is broader than literal broken-off material, but it is not universal. ชิ้น competes with อัน, ก้อน, ชุด, เครื่อง, and noun-specific classifiers according to how the speaker packages the referent.
Core constructions with ชิ้น
| Function | Frame | Example |
|---|---|---|
| count | noun + numeral + ชิ้น | ขนมห้าชิ้น — five pieces of dessert |
| demonstrative | noun + ชิ้น + นี้/นั้น/โน้น | อะไหล่ชิ้นนี้ — this spare part |
| introduced member | noun + ชิ้น + หนึ่ง | งานชิ้นหนึ่ง — a certain piece of work |
| ordinal | noun + ชิ้น + ที่ + numeral | สินค้าชิ้นที่สอง — the second product |
ฉันซื้อขนมหกชิ้นกลับบ้าน
chan sue khanom hok chin klap ban
I bought six pieces of dessert to take home. (informal; typically female speaker)
ช่างเปลี่ยนอะไหล่สองชิ้นให้แล้วครับ
chang plian alai song chin hai laeo khrap
The technician has replaced two parts. (polite, male speaker)
ห้องนี้มีเฟอร์นิเจอร์ไม้สามชิ้นค่ะ
hong ni mi foenichoe mai sam chin kha
This room has three pieces of wooden furniture. (polite, female speaker)
English often uses a plural noun, or inserts piece of because nouns such as furniture are mass nouns. Thai uses noun + numeral + ชิ้น and does not change the noun's form. The classifier makes individual items countable.
From literal pieces to abstract items
ชิ้น is neutral everyday and polite usage for food cut or served in portions, parts and components, items of furniture, merchandise, craftwork, and creative work. Context determines whether English prefers piece, item, part, or no extra word at all.
ช่วยหั่นแตงโมเป็นชิ้นเล็ก ๆ สิบชิ้นค่ะ
chuai han taengmo pen chin lek lek sip chin kha
Please cut the watermelon into ten small pieces. (polite, female speaker; literal portions)
นิทรรศการนี้มีผลงานใหม่เจ็ดชิ้น
nithatsakan ni mi phonngan mai chet chin
This exhibition has seven new works. (neutral arts context; individual works)
ลูกค้าคืนสินค้าที่เสียหายมาหนึ่งชิ้นครับ
lukkha khuen sinkha thi sia hai ma nueng chin khrap
A customer returned one damaged item. (polite, male speaker; merchandise item)
The extension is conventional, not limitless. หนังสือ takes เล่ม, phones take เครื่อง, and people take คน. อัน may classify a broadly construed object, but ชิ้น more strongly presents it as a piece, component, portion, or individual item of work or merchandise.
Demonstratives follow ชิ้น
The ordinary deictic order is noun + ชิ้น + demonstrative. The classifier selects one member and the following demonstrative locates it in the shared context.
ขนมชิ้นนี้หวานน้อยกว่าค่ะ
khanom chin ni wan noi kwa kha
This piece of dessert is less sweet. (polite, female speaker)
อะไหล่ชิ้นนั้นใส่ผิดตำแหน่งครับ
alai chin nan sai phit tamnaeng khrap
That part was installed in the wrong position. (polite, male speaker)
ผลงานชิ้นโน้นขายไปแล้ว
phonngan chin non khai pai laeo
That work over there has already been sold. (neutral gallery context)
English places this or that before the noun. Thai places นี้, นั้น, or โน้น after ชิ้น. The broader contrast is explained under demonstrative order.
Ellipsis: ชิ้น tracks an established set
After the noun is established, ชิ้น may remain with a demonstrative or modifier while the noun disappears.
ฉันเลือกขนมชิ้นสีเขียวค่ะ
chan lueak khanom chin si khiao kha
I'll choose the green piece of dessert. (polite, female speaker; full noun phrase)
ชิ้นสีเขียวไส้ถั่ว ส่วนชิ้นสีชมพูไส้มะพร้าว
chin si khiao sai thua suan chin si chomphu sai maphrao
The green one has bean filling, while the pink one has coconut filling. (desserts established; noun ellipsis)
In a workshop, ชิ้นนี้ can retrieve a component; in a gallery, it can retrieve a work. The classifier supplies an item-like construal, while discourse supplies the exact noun. Repeat the head when several possible ชิ้น-type categories are salient.
หนึ่ง counts or introduces; ที่ ranks
สินค้าหนึ่งชิ้น gives an exact quantity of one item. สินค้าชิ้นหนึ่ง introduces a particular item. Ordinal rank requires ชิ้น + ที่ + numeral, and ชิ้นแรก is the ordinary form for “the first piece.”
คูปองนี้ใช้ซื้อสินค้าได้หนึ่งชิ้นค่ะ
khupong ni chai sue sinkha dai nueng chin kha
This coupon can be used to buy one item. (polite, female speaker; exact quantity)
มีอะไหล่ชิ้นหนึ่งหายไปครับ
mi alai chin nueng hai pai khrap
One spare part has gone missing. (polite, male speaker; introduced item)
ตรวจชิ้นส่วนชิ้นที่สามอีกครั้งค่ะ
truat chinsuan chin thi sam ik khrang kha
Check the third component again. (polite, female speaker; ordinal)
ชิ้นแรกมีรอยขีดข่วนครับ
chin raek mi roi khit khuan khrap
The first piece has a scratch. (polite, male speaker; noun omitted)
Position separates discourse functions that English can blur with one: หนึ่งชิ้น counts, ชิ้นหนึ่ง introduces, and ชิ้นที่หนึ่ง or ชิ้นแรก ranks.
Classifier choice changes the portion
ชิ้น counts cut or served pieces. ก้อน can count a whole cake as a rounded mass or intact unit. The two classifiers therefore produce different real-world quantities.
ร้านทำเค้กวันเกิดสองก้อน
ran tham khek wan koet song kon
The shop made two whole birthday cakes. (whole-cake construal)
พนักงานตัดเค้กเป็นสิบสองชิ้น
phanakngan tat khek pen sip song chin
The staff cut the cake into twelve pieces. (portion construal)
A whole cake can later become many ชิ้น. Similarly, ชุด groups several items into a set, whereas ชิ้น counts the members. Classifier choice is therefore a claim about what counts as one, not an agreement ending attached to the noun.
Counting dialogue
รับขนมกี่ชิ้นคะ
rap khanom ki chin kha
How many pieces of dessert would you like? (polite, female shop assistant)
สี่ชิ้นครับ เอาชิ้นไส้ถั่วสองชิ้นกับไส้มะพร้าวสองชิ้น
si chin khrap ao chin sai thua song chin kap sai maphrao song chin
Four. I'll take two bean-filled pieces and two coconut-filled pieces. (polite, male customer; noun omitted)
The reply first gives the total with numeral + ชิ้น, then uses ชิ้น with modifiers and smaller counts. ขนม remains recoverable from the question, so Thai need not repeat it or insert a subject in every clause.
ชิ้น versus general อัน
อัน can treat an appropriate object as a general bounded thing. ชิ้น presents something more specifically as a piece, part, product item, or work. With a damaged machine, อะไหล่ชิ้นนี้ foregrounds a component in the assembly; ของอันนี้ merely points to a broadly categorized object.
There is no mechanical substitution test. Some nouns have a strong conventional classifier that outranks both. The general อัน page explains its narrower-than-English “general” status.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English numeral–noun order
❌ สามขนมอยู่ในกล่อง
Incorrect — an ordinary Thai count places the noun before numeral + ชิ้น.
✅ ขนมสามชิ้นอยู่ในกล่องค่ะ
khanom sam chin yu nai klong kha
Correct — three pieces of dessert are in the box. (polite, female speaker)
2. Omitting the classifier
❌ ช่างเปลี่ยนอะไหล่ใหม่สอง
Incorrect — the explicit item count needs ชิ้น.
✅ ช่างเปลี่ยนอะไหล่ใหม่สองชิ้นครับ
chang plian alai mai song chin khrap
Correct — the technician installed two new replacement parts. (polite, male speaker)
3. Using general อัน for every piece
❌ เค้กหกอันวางอยู่บนจาน
Incorrect for six cut portions — use ชิ้น to present them as pieces.
✅ เค้กหกชิ้นวางอยู่บนจาน
khek hok chin wang yu bon chan
Correct — six pieces of cake are on the plate.
4. Putting the demonstrative before the noun
❌ นี้อะไหล่ใช้กับรถรุ่นเก่า
Incorrect for ‘this part’ — นี้ follows ชิ้น.
✅ อะไหล่ชิ้นนี้ใช้กับรถรุ่นเก่าครับ
alai chin ni chai kap rot run kao khrap
Correct — this part is for the older vehicle model. (polite, male speaker)
5. Treating ชิ้นหนึ่ง as “the first piece”
❌ ผลงานชิ้นหนึ่งหมายถึงผลงานลำดับแรก
Incorrect — ชิ้นหนึ่ง introduces one work but does not mark rank.
✅ ผลงานชิ้นแรกอยู่ตรงทางเข้าค่ะ
phonngan chin raek yu trong thang khao kha
Correct — the first work is by the entrance. (polite, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Use ชิ้น to individuate pieces, portions, components, products, furniture items, and works. Put numeral + ชิ้น after the noun for quantity and put the demonstrative after ชิ้น; retain ชิ้น when an established noun is omitted. Distinguish exact หนึ่งชิ้น, introductory ชิ้นหนึ่ง, and ordinal ชิ้นที่สอง. Choose ก้อน, ชุด, เครื่อง, or a noun-specific classifier when the intended unit is a whole mass, set, complete device, or another conventional category.
