เครื่อง is a classifier for many machines, appliances, electronic devices, and technical instruments: คอมพิวเตอร์สามเครื่อง “three computers,” เครื่องซักผ้าสองเครื่อง “two washing machines,” เครื่องวัดความดันสี่เครื่อง “four blood-pressure monitors.” In many nouns, เครื่อง is also part of the lexical head, so เครื่องพิมพ์สองเครื่อง legitimately repeats it.
The classifier treats the referent as one functioning device. After a numeral it completes a count; before a demonstrative it selects a device; under noun ellipsis it preserves the machine category. Switching to ชุด, ชิ้น, or another counting unit changes the construal rather than merely varying style.
Core frames with เครื่อง
| Function | Frame | Example |
|---|---|---|
| count | noun + numeral + เครื่อง | คอมพิวเตอร์สามเครื่อง — three computers |
| demonstrative | noun + เครื่อง + นี้/นั้น/โน้น | โทรศัพท์เครื่องนี้ — this phone |
| introduced member | noun + เครื่อง + หนึ่ง | วิทยุเครื่องหนึ่ง — a certain radio |
| ordinal | noun + เครื่อง + ที่ + numeral | เครื่องพิมพ์เครื่องที่สอง — the second printer |
สำนักงานซื้อคอมพิวเตอร์ใหม่หกเครื่อง
samnakngan sue khomphiotoe mai hok khrueang
The office bought six new computers. (neutral workplace speech)
ร้านนี้มีเครื่องซักผ้าขนาดใหญ่สามเครื่องค่ะ
ran ni mi khrueang sak pha khanat yai sam khrueang kha
This laundromat has three large washing machines. (polite, female speaker)
คลินิกเปลี่ยนเครื่องวัดความดันสองเครื่องครับ
khlinik plian khrueang wat khwamdan song khrueang khrap
The clinic replaced two blood-pressure monitors. (polite, male speaker)
English puts the numeral before a plural noun. Thai leaves the head unchanged and follows it with numeral + เครื่อง. In เครื่องซักผ้าสามเครื่อง, the first เครื่อง helps form the noun “washing machine”; the last เครื่อง is the classifier. Their functions are different, so the repetition is grammatical.
Machines, devices, and instruments
เครื่อง is neutral everyday and polite usage for many powered appliances and machines, including computers, phones, radios, televisions, printers, engines, washing machines, and air conditioners. It also counts many technical measuring or diagnostic instruments when each is construed as a complete device.
ช่างกำลังตรวจเครื่องปรับอากาศสี่เครื่อง
chang kamlang truat khrueang prap akat si khrueang
The technician is checking four air conditioners. (neutral workplace speech)
ห้องทดลองมีเครื่องวัดอุณหภูมิสามเครื่องค่ะ
hong thotlong mi khrueang wat unhaphum sam khrueang kha
The laboratory has three thermometers or temperature-measuring devices. (polite, female speaker; technical instruments)
The boundary is lexical, not purely technological. A detachable component may be counted with ชิ้น, a coordinated kit with ชุด, and a particular musical instrument may have its own conventional classifier. เครื่อง is safest when the referent is presented as a complete operating device.
Demonstratives follow เครื่อง
The deictic frame is noun + เครื่อง + demonstrative. นี้, นั้น, and โน้น follow the classifier rather than preceding the noun as English this or that does.
โทรศัพท์เครื่องนี้ชาร์จแบตเตอรี่ไม่เข้าค่ะ
thorasap khrueang ni chat baettoeri mai khao kha
This phone will not charge. (polite, female speaker)
เครื่องพิมพ์เครื่องนั้นต่อกับเครือข่ายแล้วครับ
khrueang phim khrueang nan to kap khrueakhai laeo khrap
That printer is connected to the network now. (polite, male speaker)
ช่วยปิดวิทยุเครื่องโน้นหน่อยค่ะ
chuai pit witthayu khrueang non noi kha
Please turn off that radio over there. (polite, female speaker)
The repeated เครื่อง in เครื่องพิมพ์เครื่องนั้น can look strange through English eyes, but the first belongs to the noun and the second anchors the demonstrative. See classifier repetition for parallel structures.
Ellipsis retains the device construal
When the device type is already established, เครื่อง may remain without the noun.
ผมลองใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เครื่องนี้แล้วครับ
phom long chai khomphiotoe khrueang ni laeo khrap
I have tried this computer. (polite, male speaker; full noun phrase)
เครื่องนี้ทำงานเร็วกว่า แต่เครื่องนั้นจอใหญ่กว่า
khrueang ni thamngan reo kwa tae khrueang nan cho yai kwa
This one runs faster, but that one has a larger screen. (computers established; noun ellipsis)
In a phone shop, เครื่องนี้ retrieves a phone; in a clinic, it can retrieve a monitor. The classifier categorizes the referent as a device, but context supplies its exact type. Repeat the noun if several kinds of machine are simultaneously salient.
หนึ่ง counts or introduces; ที่ ranks
คอมพิวเตอร์หนึ่งเครื่อง reports an exact quantity. คอมพิวเตอร์เครื่องหนึ่ง introduces a particular computer. Ordinal rank uses เครื่อง + ที่ + numeral, with เครื่องแรก as the usual “first one.”
ห้องประชุมต้องใช้คอมพิวเตอร์หนึ่งเครื่องค่ะ
hong prachum tong chai khomphiotoe nueng khrueang kha
The meeting room needs one computer. (polite, female speaker; exact count)
มีคอมพิวเตอร์เครื่องหนึ่งเปิดทิ้งไว้ครับ
mi khomphiotoe khrueang nueng poet thing wai khrap
A computer has been left on. (polite, male speaker; introduced device)
ตรวจเครื่องปรับอากาศเครื่องที่สามก่อนค่ะ
truat khrueang prap akat khrueang thi sam kon kha
Check the third air conditioner first. (polite, female speaker; ordinal)
เครื่องแรกซ่อมเสร็จแล้วครับ
khrueang raek som set laeo khrap
The first one has been repaired. (polite, male speaker; noun omitted)
Position is meaningful: เครื่องหนึ่ง does not mark first place, while เครื่องที่หนึ่ง does not merely introduce an indefinite device.
Classifier choice changes the counted unit
เครื่อง counts complete devices. ชุด packages coordinated equipment as kits. A clinic may own several monitors individually but deploy them in fewer prepared sets.
คลินิกมีเครื่องวัดความดันสี่เครื่อง
khlinik mi khrueang wat khwamdan si khrueang
The clinic has four individual blood-pressure monitors. (device construal)
คลินิกเตรียมเครื่องวัดความดันไว้สองชุด ชุดละสองเครื่อง
khlinik triam khrueang wat khwamdan wai song chut chut la song khrueang
The clinic prepared two blood-pressure-monitor kits, with two devices in each kit. (set construal followed by device count)
The physical inventory can be identical. เครื่อง answers “how many operating devices?”; ชุด answers “how many organized sets?” Classifier choice packages the referents for the current purpose.
Counting dialogue
แผนกนี้มีเครื่องพิมพ์กี่เครื่องคะ
phanaek ni mi khrueang phim ki khrueang kha
How many printers does this department have? (polite, female speaker)
สามเครื่องครับ เครื่องหนึ่งเสีย อีกสองเครื่องยังใช้ได้
sam khrueang khrap khrueang nueng sia ik song khrueang yang chai dai
Three. One is broken, and the other two still work. (polite, male speaker; noun omitted)
The reply first answers with numeral + เครื่อง, then partitions the set using เครื่องหนึ่ง and อีกสองเครื่อง. Thai omits เครื่องพิมพ์ because the question makes the device category recoverable.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English numeral–noun order
❌ สองคอมพิวเตอร์อยู่ในห้องประชุม
Incorrect — an ordinary Thai count places the device noun before numeral + เครื่อง.
✅ คอมพิวเตอร์สองเครื่องอยู่ในห้องประชุมครับ
khomphiotoe song khrueang yu nai hong prachum khrap
Correct — two computers are in the meeting room. (polite, male speaker)
2. Omitting the final classifier
❌ บริษัทซื้อเครื่องพิมพ์ใหม่สาม
Incorrect — เครื่อง inside เครื่องพิมพ์ is part of the noun; the count still needs classifier เครื่อง.
✅ บริษัทซื้อเครื่องพิมพ์ใหม่สามเครื่องค่ะ
borisat sue khrueang phim mai sam khrueang kha
Correct — the company bought three new printers. (polite, female speaker)
3. Using general อัน indiscriminately
❌ โทรศัพท์สองอันวางอยู่บนโต๊ะ
Incorrect in neutral usage — phones conventionally take เครื่อง.
✅ โทรศัพท์สองเครื่องวางอยู่บนโต๊ะ
thorasap song khrueang wang yu bon to
Correct — two phones are on the table.
4. Putting the demonstrative before the noun
❌ นี้เครื่องซักผ้าเสียงดังมาก
Incorrect for ‘this washing machine’ — นี้ follows classifier เครื่อง.
✅ เครื่องซักผ้าเครื่องนี้เสียงดังมากค่ะ
khrueang sak pha khrueang ni siang dang mak kha
Correct — this washing machine is very loud. (polite, female speaker)
5. Treating เครื่องหนึ่ง as an ordinal
❌ เครื่องปรับอากาศเครื่องหนึ่งคือเครื่องลำดับแรก
Incorrect — เครื่องหนึ่ง introduces a device but does not rank it.
✅ เครื่องปรับอากาศเครื่องแรกเย็นที่สุดครับ
khrueang prap akat khrueang raek yen thi sut khrap
Correct — the first air conditioner is the coolest. (polite, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
Use เครื่อง for complete machines, appliances, electronic devices, and many technical instruments. Count with noun + numeral + เครื่อง, point with noun + เครื่อง + demonstrative, and retain เครื่อง when the noun is omitted. Repetition in เครื่องพิมพ์สองเครื่อง is functional, not an error. Distinguish หนึ่งเครื่อง, เครื่องหนึ่ง, and เครื่องที่สอง, and select ชุด or ชิ้น when sets or components—not operating devices—are being counted.
