Thai forms ordinary ordinals by placing ที่ + number after the classifier: รถคันที่สอง “the second car,” หนังสือเล่มที่สาม “the third book,” and บ้านหลังที่หนึ่ง “the first house.” The classifier identifies the kind of unit; ที่ changes the following number from quantity to rank.
English pushes second before the noun. Thai first names the set, selects one member through its classifier, and then states that member's position. This is the same head-first logic found throughout the noun phrase.
Counting and ranking are different structures
| Meaning | Thai pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| two cars | N + number + CL | รถสองคัน |
| the second car | N + CL + ที่ + number | รถคันที่สอง |
| three books | N + number + CL | หนังสือสามเล่ม |
| the third book | N + CL + ที่ + number | หนังสือเล่มที่สาม |
รถสองคันจอดอยู่ข้างนอกครับ
rot song khan chot yu khangnok khrap
Two cars are parked outside. (polite, male speaker; cardinal count)
รถคันที่สองเป็นของบริษัทค่ะ
rot khan thi song pen khong borisat kha
The second car belongs to the company. (polite, female speaker; ordinal rank)
Moving สอง across คัน changes the construction. It is not optional stylistic rearrangement.
ที่ marks a position in an ordered set
The order can be temporal, spatial, procedural, or imposed for the conversation.
กรุณาอ่านบทที่สี่ก่อนค่ะ
karuna an bot thi si kon kha
Please read chapter four first. (formal/polite, female speaker)
ผู้สมัครคนที่ห้ารออยู่หน้าห้องครับ
phusamak khon thi ha ro yu na hong khrap
The fifth applicant is waiting outside the room. (polite, male speaker)
บ้านหลังที่สามทางซ้ายขายแล้วค่ะ
ban lang thi sam thang sai khai laeo kha
The third house on the left has been sold. (polite, female speaker)
บท can function as both the head “chapter” and its counting unit in the compact บทที่สี่. Many nouns permit such same-form noun/classifier constructions. People use คน; houses use หลัง.
Ordinals do not say how many entities exist. รถคันที่สอง presupposes an ordered set with at least two members, but it does not mean “two cars.”
หนึ่ง, เล่มหนึ่ง, and เล่มที่หนึ่ง
Three placements package different information. The หนึ่ง placement guide treats their discourse effects in greater detail:
| Phrase | Core reading | Function |
|---|---|---|
| หนังสือหนึ่งเล่ม | one book | neutral exact count |
| หนังสือเล่มหนึ่ง | one/a certain book | indefinite member or narrative introduction |
| หนังสือเล่มที่หนึ่ง | the first book | rank in an ordered set |
ฉันซื้อหนังสือหนึ่งเล่มค่ะ
chan sue nangsue nueng lem kha
I bought one book. (polite, female speaker; count)
ในกล่องมีหนังสือเล่มหนึ่งที่ไม่มีชื่อ
nai klong mi nangsue lem nueng thi maimi chue
In the box there is a certain book with no title. (narrative introduction)
หนังสือเล่มที่หนึ่งเป็นฉบับแก้ไขครับ
nangsue lem thi nueng pen chabap kaekhai khrap
The first book is the revised edition. (formal enumeration; polite male speaker)
English a, one, and first are also distinct, but their prenominal order does not predict Thai placement. หนังสือเล่มที่หนึ่ง is clearest in (formal/technical) labeling or explicit enumeration; everyday (informal/neutral) Thai normally prefers หนังสือเล่มแรก “the first book.”
Add descriptions and demonstratives around the ordinal
A description follows the noun before the classifier: หนังสือเก่าเล่มที่สอง “the second old book.” A demonstrative may follow the ordinal phrase when it contrasts that ranked member in discourse: หนังสือเล่มที่สองนั้น “that second book.”
ขอปากกาสีน้ำเงินด้ามที่สองครับ
kho pakka si nam ngoen dam thi song khrap
I'd like the second blue pen. (polite, male speaker)
เอกสารชุดที่สามนั้นยังไม่ครบค่ะ
ekkasan chut thi sam nan yang mai khrop kha
That third set of documents is still incomplete. (polite, female speaker)
Demonstrative นั้น is not required merely because English uses the. The ordinal itself normally makes the referent identifiable inside the active set.
Keep ordinary demonstratives after the classifier unit rather than moving them before the noun. Also retain a noun's conventional classifier: รถคันนั้น and รถคันที่สอง use คัน, not general อัน merely because the vehicle is a visible object.
Noun ellipsis
Once the noun is known, classifier + ที่ + number stands alone:
ฉันลองรองเท้าสามคู่แล้ว แต่คู่ที่สองใส่สบายที่สุดค่ะ
chan long rongthao sam khu laeo tae khu thi song sai sabai thi sut kha
I've tried three pairs of shoes, but the second pair is the most comfortable. (polite, female speaker)
คู่ที่สอง retrieves รองเท้า without repeating it. The classifier preserves the paired construal.
Classifier choice can change the ranked unit. หนังสือเล่มที่สอง is the second physical volume; หนังสือชุดที่สอง is the second set or series. The ordinal ranks whatever unit the classifier creates.
เล่มที่สองหาย แต่ชุดที่สองยังอยู่ครบครับ
lem thi song hai tae chut thi song yang yu khrop khrap
The second volume is missing, but the second set is still complete. (polite, male speaker)
Asking for ordinal position
Use ที่เท่าไร when the answer is an ordinal position, not กี่ + classifier, which asks for quantity.
สำนักงานของเราอยู่ชั้นที่เท่าไรคะ
samnakngan khong rao yu chan thi thaorai kha
Which floor is our office on? (polite, female speaker)
อยู่ชั้นที่หกครับ
yu chan thi hok khrap
It's on the sixth floor. (polite, male speaker)
Everyday building speech also uses compact ชั้นหก “floor six.” ชั้นที่หก is the explicit ordinal and is especially clear in careful instructions.
A count-and-rank dialogue
วันนี้ต้องสัมภาษณ์ผู้สมัครกี่คนครับ
wan ni tong samphat phusamak ki khon khrap
How many applicants do we need to interview today? (polite, male speaker)
หกคนค่ะ ตอนนี้กำลังคุยกับคนที่สอง
hok khon kha ton ni kamlang khui kap khon thi song
Six. Right now we're speaking with the second one. (polite, female speaker)
The question asks for a cardinal total with กี่คน; the answer gives หกคน, then uses ordinal ellipsis in คนที่สอง. A classifier can therefore carry two different numerical relations in one exchange.
For a visible selection, the same ranked structure combines with the demonstrative system:
ผู้สมัครคนนี้มาถึงเป็นคนแรก แต่เป็นคนที่สามตามรายชื่อครับ
phusamak khon ni ma thueng pen khon raek tae pen khon thi sam tam raichue khrap
This applicant arrived first, but is third on the list. (polite, male speaker)
คุณเลือกบ้านหลังไหนครับ
khun lueak ban lang nai khrap
Which house have you chosen? (polite, male speaker)
หลังที่สองค่ะ หลังแรกเล็กเกินไป
lang thi song kha lang raek lek koen pai
The second one. The first is too small. (polite, female speaker)
หลังที่สอง uses regular classifier ellipsis. หลังแรก is a common compact expression with แรก “first”; it does not license deleting ที่ before every other numeral.
Common Mistakes
1. Using cardinal order for an ordinal
❌ ฉันเลือกรถสองคัน
Incorrect for “I chose the second car” — this means choosing two cars.
✅ ฉันเลือกรถคันที่สอง
chan lueak rot khan thi song
Correct — I chose the second car. (informal; typically female speaker)
2. Placing the ordinal before the noun
❌ ที่สามหนังสือหายไป
Incorrect — copying English “third book” order.
✅ หนังสือเล่มที่สามหายไป
nangsue lem thi sam hai pai
Correct — the third book is missing.
3. Omitting the classifier
❌ บ้านที่สองทางซ้ายขายแล้ว
Non-target ordinary count-noun pattern — houses use หลัง before the ordinal.
✅ บ้านหลังที่สองทางซ้ายขายแล้ว
ban lang thi song thang sai khai laeo
Correct — the second house on the left has been sold.
4. Confusing one member with the first member
❌ หนังสือเล่มหนึ่งหมายถึงเล่มที่หนึ่งเสมอ
Incorrect — เล่มหนึ่ง is one/a certain volume, not necessarily first.
✅ หนังสือเล่มที่หนึ่งระบุลำดับอย่างชัดเจน
nangsue lem thi nueng rabu lamdap yang chatchen
Correct — หนังสือเล่มที่หนึ่ง explicitly identifies first position.
Key Takeaways
Count with N + number + classifier; rank with N + classifier + ที่ + number. Classifier choice defines the unit being ranked, and the ordinal sequence can remain after noun ellipsis. Keep เล่มหนึ่ง “a certain volume” distinct from เล่มที่หนึ่ง “the first volume.”
