To ask “how many?” about an ordinary count noun, Thai places กี่ in the numeral slot and follows it with the noun's classifier: หนังสือกี่เล่ม “how many books?”, ลูกค้ากี่คน “how many customers?”, รถกี่คัน “how many vehicles?” The order is noun + กี่ + classifier.
English places how many before a plural noun. Thai keeps the noun first, does not pluralize it, and uses a classifier after กี่. The question and answer therefore share one productive frame.
Replace the numeral with กี่
| Statement | Question | Answer slot |
|---|---|---|
| หนังสือสามเล่ม | หนังสือกี่เล่ม | สามเล่ม |
| ลูกค้าสองคน | ลูกค้ากี่คน | สองคน |
| รถห้าคัน | รถกี่คัน | ห้าคัน |
| บ้านสี่หลัง | บ้านกี่หลัง | สี่หลัง |
คุณยืมหนังสือกี่เล่มคะ
khun yuem nangsue ki lem kha
How many books did you borrow? (polite, female speaker)
ยืมสามเล่มครับ
yuem sam lem khrap
I borrowed three. (book context; polite male speaker)
The answer omits หนังสือ but retains เล่ม. The classifier makes “three [volumes]” recoverable.
The classifier is selected by the intended unit
คืนนี้มีแขกกี่คนครับ
khuen ni mi khaek ki khon khrap
How many guests are there tonight? (polite, male speaker)
ที่จอดรถรองรับรถได้กี่คันคะ
thi chot rot rongrap rot dai ki khan kha
How many vehicles can the parking area accommodate? (polite, female speaker)
คน packages people; คัน packages vehicles. General อัน cannot replace either merely because the learner has not recalled the specific classifier.
The same noun can invite different units. กาแฟกี่แก้ว asks about prepared servings in glasses/cups; กาแฟกี่ถุง asks about bags of coffee.
ต้องชงกาแฟกี่แก้วครับ
tong chong kafae ki kaeo khrap
How many coffees do we need to make? (servings; polite male speaker)
ลูกค้าสั่งกาแฟกี่ถุงคะ
luk kha sang kafae ki thung kha
How many bags of coffee did the customer order? (polite, female speaker)
Classifier choice is part of the question: it tells the respondent what counts as one answerable unit.
Noun ellipsis in a known context
When the noun is active, กี่ + classifier can stand alone:
บนโต๊ะมีกล่องหลายใบ คุณต้องใช้กี่ใบครับ
bon to mi klong lai bai khun tong chai ki bai khrap
There are several boxes on the table. How many do you need? (polite, male speaker)
สองใบนี้ค่ะ
song bai ni kha
These two. (box context; polite female speaker)
ใบ preserves the container class after กล่อง is omitted. If the antecedent were books, กี่เล่ม and สองเล่มนี้ would preserve the volume class instead.
Demonstrative นี้ follows the classifier in the answer. กี่ asks for an unknown number; the answer supplies a number and may then identify the selected set with นี้. Never move the demonstrative before the noun to imitate English these boxes: กล่องสองใบนี้ keeps นี้ at the end of the classifier phrase.
กี่ with times, ages, and measures
Several highly frequent questions use a unit word directly:
ตอนนี้กี่โมงแล้วคะ
ton ni ki mong laeo kha
What time is it now? (polite, female speaker)
บัตรใบนี้ราคาเท่าไรครับ
bat bai ni rakha thaorai khrap
How much does this ticket cost? (polite, male speaker)
กี่โมง asks which hour/time; กี่บาท asks how many baht; อายุเท่าไร asks age in an open-ended way. กี่ and เท่าไร overlap in some quantity questions, but กี่ characteristically expects a count with a unit or classifier. เท่าไร also asks price, degree, or amount.
ต้องพักที่นี่กี่คืนคะ
tong phak thi ni ki khuen kha
How many nights do you need to stay here? (polite, female speaker)
คืน serves as the counted time unit. No separate plural form appears.
Cardinal quantity versus ordinal identity
กี่ + classifier asks the size of a set. Classifier + ที่เท่าไร asks the position of one member. The ordinal guide develops that second pattern and its contrast with cardinal counting.
อาคารนี้มีห้องประชุมกี่ห้องครับ
akhan ni mi hong prachum ki hong khrap
How many meeting rooms does this building have? (polite, male speaker)
ห้องประชุมอยู่ชั้นที่เท่าไรคะ
hong prachum yu chan thi thaorai kha
Which floor is the meeting room on? (polite, female speaker)
The first answer might be สามห้อง “three rooms”; the second ชั้นที่หก “the sixth floor.” Do not use กี่ to mean which numbered one without the appropriate ordinal construction.
This distinction reflects two different information gaps. With กี่, the speaker knows the kind of thing and asks for the total number of units. With ที่เท่าไร, the speaker presupposes an ordered sequence and asks where one member falls within it. English can blur the difference with what number, so build the Thai question from the expected answer: สามคัน calls for กี่คัน, while คันที่สาม calls for คันที่เท่าไร.
A counting dialogue
พรุ่งนี้มีผู้เข้าร่วมกี่คนคะ
phrung ni mi phu khao ruam ki khon kha
How many participants will there be tomorrow? (polite, female speaker)
ประมาณยี่สิบคนครับ ต้องเตรียมเก้าอี้ยี่สิบสองตัว
praman yi sip khon khrap tong triam kao i yi sip song tua
About twenty. We need to prepare twenty-two chairs. (polite, male speaker)
Thai verbs do not conjugate for future time; พรุ่งนี้ supplies it. The person and furniture classifiers make the two counts explicit.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English “how many + noun” order
❌ กี่หนังสืออยู่บนโต๊ะ
Incorrect — กี่ belongs after the noun and before its classifier.
✅ บนโต๊ะมีหนังสือกี่เล่ม
bon to mi nangsue ki lem
Correct — how many books are on the table?
2. Omitting the classifier
❌ คุณมีรถกี่
Incomplete ordinary count question — รถ requires คัน.
✅ คุณมีรถกี่คัน
khun mi rot ki khan
Correct — how many vehicles do you have?
3. Using อัน indiscriminately
❌ คืนนี้มีแขกกี่อัน
Incorrect and dehumanizing classifier choice — people take คน.
✅ คืนนี้มีแขกกี่คน
khuen ni mi khaek ki khon
Correct — how many guests are there tonight?
4. Confusing count with rank
❌ รถคันนี้เป็นคันกี่
Incorrect target for asking ordinal position.
✅ นี่เป็นรถคันที่เท่าไร
ni pen rot khan thi thaorai
Correct — which numbered car is this?
Key Takeaways
Ask a cardinal count with noun + กี่ + classifier and answer with number + classifier. Omit the noun when context supports it, but retain the semantic classifier. Use classifier + ที่เท่าไร for ordinal position, and let classifier choice specify whether you are counting people, vehicles, servings, packages, or another unit.
