Thai แต่ละ means “each” in the sense of looking at a set member by member. นักเรียนแต่ละคน invites separate attention to every student; แต่ละวัน treats the days as individual occasions. It is especially natural when members make different choices, receive separate allocations, or have properties that must be tracked individually.
Both แต่ละ and ทุก can cover an entire relevant set. The difference is viewpoint: ทุก emphasizes that there are no exceptions, while แต่ละ opens a separate slot for each member. Neither word is an English-style article, and an overt count noun still uses Thai classifier order.
The minimal contrast: uniform coverage versus individual slots
นักเรียนทุกคนต้องส่งรายงานวันศุกร์ค่ะ
nakrian thuk khon tong song raingan wan suk kha
Every student must submit the report on Friday. (formal class rule, female speaker; uniform coverage)
นักเรียนแต่ละคนเลือกหัวข้อของตัวเองค่ะ
nakrian taela khon lueak huakho khong tua eng kha
Each student chooses their own topic. (formal class instruction, female speaker; individualized choices)
นักเรียนทั้งหมดอยู่ในห้องแล้วค่ะ
nakrian thangmot yu nai hong laeo kha
All the students are in the room now. (polite, female report; collective total accounted for)
The first rule is true only if no student is exempt. The second builds one choice relation per student, which makes ของตัวเอง “their own” natural. The third reports the state of the complete group rather than distributing a separate requirement or choice.
Productive patterns
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| noun + แต่ละ + classifier | each member of an overt noun set | หนังสือแต่ละเล่ม |
| แต่ละ + person/time/category noun | the unit itself is sufficient | แต่ละคน, แต่ละวัน, แต่ละกรณี |
| แต่ละ + unit + possessive/reflexive | member-specific possession or choice | แต่ละคนมีหน้าที่ของตัวเอง |
| แต่ละ...ไม่เท่ากัน / ต่างกัน | explicitly differing values | แต่ละห้องราคาไม่เท่ากัน |
หนังสือแต่ละเล่มมีรหัสไม่เหมือนกันครับ
nangsue taela lem mi rahat mai muean kan khrap
Each book has a different code. (formal workplace or library context, male speaker)
ห้องแต่ละห้องมีกุญแจของตัวเองค่ะ
hong taela hong mi kunchae khong tua eng kha
Each room has its own key. (polite, female speaker; room individualized)
แต่ละวันร้านเปิดไม่พร้อมกันครับ
taela wan ran poet mai phrom kan khrap
The shops do not open at the same time each day. (polite, male speaker; days treated separately)
When a noun doubles as its own classifier, repetition is possible: ห้องแต่ละห้อง “each room,” ร้านแต่ละร้าน “each shop.” With a dedicated classifier, use it after แต่ละ: รถแต่ละคัน, เอกสารแต่ละฉบับ, แมวแต่ละตัว. Once the domain is established, แต่ละคัน or แต่ละฉบับ can stand without repeating the noun.
Individualization does not require difference
แต่ละ strongly supports comparisons and differing outcomes, but it does not logically require them. นักเรียนแต่ละคนได้รับบัตร can be true when everyone receives the same kind of card; the sentence still views the deliveries one by one. Add ไม่เหมือนกัน, ต่างกัน, or a member-specific phrase only when difference is intended.
ผู้เข้าร่วมแต่ละคนได้รับป้ายชื่อครับ
phu khao ruam taela khon dai rap pai chue khrap
Each participant receives a name badge. (formal event instruction, male speaker; same allocation pattern applied individually)
กล่องแต่ละใบหนักไม่เท่ากันค่ะ
klong taela bai nak mai thao kan kha
Each box has a different weight. (polite, female speaker; differing values)
สาขาแต่ละแห่งกำหนดเวลาเปิดเองครับ
sakha taela haeng kamnot wela poet eng khrap
Each branch sets its own opening time. (formal workplace report, male speaker; independent decisions)
English often relies on singular agreement after each. Thai nouns and verbs do not acquire singular agreement morphology. The singular-like interpretation comes from selecting members one at a time; the verb remains invariant.
แต่ละ versus คนละ and ละ
แต่ละ identifies the individuals being considered. คนละ, ใบละ, วันละ, and similar classifier + ละ phrases state an allocation or rate: one amount per member or unit. They often cooperate in one sentence but occupy different roles.
พนักงานแต่ละคนรับผิดชอบลูกค้าคนละสองรายค่ะ
phanakngan taela khon rapphitchop lukkha khon la song rai kha
Each employee is responsible for two customers apiece. (formal workplace explanation, female speaker)
นักเรียนแต่ละคนหยิบเอกสารคนละฉบับครับ
nakrian taela khon yip ekkasan khon la chabap khrap
Each student takes one document. (formal class instruction, male speaker; one per person)
ค่าห้องพักคืนละสองพันบาทค่ะ
kha hong phak khuen la song phan bat kha
The room rate is two thousand baht per night. (polite, female service speech; rate, not an ‘each room’ phrase)
The distributive ละ page explains these allocations in depth. Do not replace every English each with แต่ละ: “two per person” is คนละสอง, while “each person chooses” is แต่ละคนเลือก.
Pronouns, possession, and omission
Because the members are separately tracked, แต่ละ frequently appears with ของตัวเอง “one's own,” ไม่เหมือนกัน “not the same,” or ต่างกัน “differ.” These are ordinary compositional partners, not obligatory endings.
แต่ละคนเตรียมอุปกรณ์ของตัวเองมานะคะ
taela khon triam upakon khong tua eng ma na kha
Everyone, please bring your own equipment. (polite, female instruction; member-specific possession)
เราแบ่งงานแล้วค่ะ แต่ละคนรู้หน้าที่ของตัวเอง
rao baeng ngan laeo kha taela khon ru nathi khong tua eng
We've divided the work; each person knows their own responsibility. (polite, female speaker)
ตรวจครบแล้วครับ แต่ละฉบับมีลายเซ็นเรียบร้อย
truat khrop laeo khrap taela chabap mi lai sen riaproi
I've checked them all; each copy has the required signature. (polite, male speaker; document noun omitted)
The last example omits เอกสาร because the document set is active. Classifier ฉบับ remains and lets แต่ละ distribute over the copies. Thai does not need an overt equivalent of English one after each.
It is not reciprocal กัน
English each also appears inside each other, but Thai reciprocity uses กัน, not แต่ละ. The people are participants in one mutual relation rather than separately quantified noun phrases.
เพื่อนสองคนช่วยกันเตรียมอาหารครับ
phuean song khon chuai kan triam ahan khrap
The two friends are helping each other prepare the food. (polite, male speaker; reciprocal/cooperative กัน)
เพื่อนแต่ละคนเตรียมอาหารคนละอย่างค่ะ
phuean taela khon triam ahan khon la yang kha
Each friend prepared a different dish. (polite, female speaker; individual allocation)
See reciprocal กัน for the mutual-action pattern. The English word each is not enough to decide between these structures.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ผู้สมัครแต่ละคนต้องเตรียมอะไรบ้างคะ
phusamak taela khon tong triam arai bang kha
What does each applicant need to prepare? (polite, female speaker; individual requirements)
เตรียมบัตรประชาชนกับเอกสารคนละสองฉบับครับ
triam bat prachachon kap ekkasan khon la song chabap khrap
They should prepare an ID card and two copies of the documents each. (polite, male speaker; applicants omitted, per-person allocation)
Common Mistakes
❌ แต่ละนักเรียนเลือกหัวข้อเองค่ะ
Incorrect ordinary order — the overt human noun precedes แต่ละคน.
✅ นักเรียนแต่ละคนเลือกหัวข้อเองค่ะ
nakrian taela khon lueak huakho eng kha
Each student chooses a topic independently. (formal class instruction, female speaker)
❌ หนังสือแต่ละมีรหัสครับ
Incomplete count-noun phrase — use the book classifier เล่ม.
✅ หนังสือแต่ละเล่มมีรหัสครับ
nangsue taela lem mi rahat khrap
Each book has a code. (formal library context, male speaker)
❌ แต่ละคนสองฉบับค่ะ
Incorrect allocation order — ‘two copies per person’ uses คนละสองฉบับ.
✅ แจกเอกสารคนละสองฉบับค่ะ
chaek ekkasan khon la song chabap kha
Distribute two copies to each person. (formal instruction, female speaker)
❌ พวกเขาแต่ละช่วยกันครับ
Incorrect attempt to translate ‘each other’ with แต่ละ.
✅ พวกเขาช่วยกันครับ
phuak khao chuai kan khrap
They help each other. (polite, male speaker; reciprocal กัน)
Key Takeaways
แต่ละ distributes attention member by member. Use noun + แต่ละ + classifier for an overt count noun, or forms such as แต่ละคน and แต่ละวัน when the unit itself is clear. It often accompanies member-specific choices and differing values but does not require difference. Distinguish universal ทุก, collective total ทั้งหมด, per-unit classifier + ละ, and reciprocal กัน.
