Dates, Months, and Year Order

Thai normally packages a full calendar date as day + month + year, the reverse of the month-first order familiar to many American English speakers. In speech, วันที่ introduces the numbered date; in writing, a bare date can simply be number + full month name + year. No article like English “the” and no preposition like “on” is built into the date itself.

The number after วันที่ uses the ordinary Thai cardinal system: 1 is หนึ่ง, 11 is สิบเอ็ด, and 21 is ยี่สิบเอ็ด. The element ที่ marks the calendar slot, but it does not make the number take a special ordinal form. This page focuses on solar-calendar dates; choosing between Buddhist Era and Common Era years is covered on the era-years page.

The basic day–month–year frame

The productive spoken frame is วันที่ + day number + month + year. Add ปี before the year when it helps listeners recognize the final number as a year, especially when only the month and year are being discussed. In a full date, ปี is often omitted because the position already identifies the year.

งานเริ่มวันที่หนึ่งมีนาคมค่ะ

ngan roem wan thi nueng minakhom kha

The event starts on March 1. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

เรานัดกันวันที่สิบเอ็ดเมษายนครับ

rao nat kan wan thi sip et mesayon khrap

We are meeting on April 11. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

กำหนดส่งคือวันที่ยี่สิบเอ็ดพฤษภาคมค่ะ

kamnot song khue wan thi yi sip et phruetsaphakhom kha

The deadline is May 21. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

The words เริ่ม, นัด, and กำหนดส่ง locate the date in the event. Thai does not add an obligatory equivalent of English “on,” and the verbs do not change tense form. Context or time words establish when the event occurs.

💡
After วันที่, read the day as a normal cardinal. The ที่ belongs to the date frame; it does not turn 21 into a separately inflected “twenty-first.”

The twelve month names

Full month names are neutral in conversation and required in many (formal) documents. Their standard abbreviations are common in schedules, forms, and compact notices, but an abbreviation is normally expanded to the full month name when read aloud.

MonthRTGSStandard abbreviation
มกราคมmokkarakhomม.ค.
กุมภาพันธ์kumphaphanก.พ.
มีนาคมminakhomมี.ค.
เมษายนmesayonเม.ย.
พฤษภาคมphruetsaphakhomพ.ค.
มิถุนายนmithunayonมิ.ย.
กรกฎาคมkarakadakhomก.ค.
สิงหาคมsinghakhomส.ค.
กันยายนkanyayonก.ย.
ตุลาคมtulakhomต.ค.
พฤศจิกายนphruetsachikayonพ.ย.
ธันวาคมthanwakhomธ.ค.

There is no reliable shortcut to every spelling or pronunciation: these are learned Sanskrit-based names, and several contain letters that do not map transparently onto everyday syllable structure. Learn each as a complete word. One useful written clue is that most 31-day months end in -าคม, most 30-day months end in -ายน, and กุมภาพันธ์ is the exception.

โรงเรียนปิดตั้งแต่สิบห้าเมษายนถึงสิบหกพฤษภาคมค่ะ

rongrian pit tangtae sip ha mesayon thueng sip hok phruetsaphakhom kha

The school is closed from April 15 to May 16. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

สัญญาสิ้นสุดวันที่สามสิบเอ็ดธันวาคมครับ

sanya sinsut wan thi sam sip et thanwakhom khrap

The contract ends on December 31. (polite, male speaker; neutral-to-formal context)

💡
Month abbreviations are writing conventions, not new spoken words. Read ก.ย. in a date as กันยายน, not as a sequence of letter names in careful speech.

Adding the day of the week

When the weekday is stated, the full frame is วัน + weekday + ที่ + day + month + year. Because วัน is already part of the weekday name, do not add วันที่ as another complete unit after it. Compare วันที่สิบห้า “the 15th” with วันอังคารที่สิบห้า “Tuesday the 15th.”

Without weekdayWith weekday
วันที่สิบห้ากันยายนวันอังคารที่สิบห้ากันยายน
วันที่หนึ่งมกราคมวันศุกร์ที่หนึ่งมกราคม

ประชุมเลื่อนไปเป็นวันอังคารที่สิบห้ากันยายนค่ะ

prachum luean pai pen wan angkhan thi sip ha kanyayon kha

The meeting has been moved to Tuesday, September 15. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

ร้านจะเปิดอีกครั้งวันศุกร์ที่หนึ่งมกราคมครับ

ran cha poet ik khrang wan suk thi nueng mokkarakhom khrap

The shop will open again on Friday, January 1. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Here จะ marks a prospective event; the date itself does not carry future inflection. In the first example, เลื่อนไปเป็น packages “be moved to” without an English-style tense ending.

Written dates: full, compact, and formal

A neutral written date can appear as 15 กันยายน 2569. In (formal government writing), the date line conventionally uses a numeral for the day, the full month name, and a Buddhist Era year. A form headed วันที่ may show วันที่ 15 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2569. Compact (informal) writing can use 15 ก.ย. 69, but a two-digit year is unsafe when the century is not obvious.

Numeric forms such as 15/09/2569 occur on forms and screens and normally follow day–month–year order in Thai contexts. They become ambiguous across countries, so international communication should use a spelled-out month or an explicitly specified data format.

กรุณากรอกวันที่เกิดเป็นวัน เดือน และปีค่ะ

karuna krok wan thi koet pen wan duean lae pi kha

Please enter your date of birth as day, month, and year. (formal-polite instruction, female speaker)

ในหนังสือราชการให้เขียนชื่อเดือนเต็มครับ

nai nangsue ratchakan hai khian chue duean tem khrap

In official correspondence, write the month name in full. (formal-polite explanation, male speaker)

The bare sequence does not require วันที่. Its presence depends on syntax: วันที่ can head a date phrase in a sentence or label a form field, while a document’s standalone date line may begin directly with the day number.

Asking and answering naturally

The ordinary question is วันที่เท่าไร “what date?” The topic—an appointment, delivery, or event—can be omitted when both speakers know it. Thai also freely omits subject pronouns when the referent remains clear.

นัดตรวจวันที่เท่าไรคะ

nat truat wan thi thaorai kha

What date is the checkup? (polite question, female speaker)

วันที่ยี่สิบสามพฤศจิกายนครับ ตอนบ่ายสองโมง

wan thi yi sip sam phruetsachikayon khrap ton bai song mong

November 23, at two in the afternoon. (polite reply, male speaker)

The reply has no explicit subject or verb because “the checkup is” is recoverable. This is normal discourse organization, not broken or abbreviated grammar.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying American English month–day order

❌ กันยายนสิบห้า

Incorrect as a neutral Thai full date—the ordinary order is day before month.

✅ นัดไว้วันที่สิบห้ากันยายนค่ะ

nat wai wan thi sip ha kanyayon kha

The appointment is set for September 15. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Inserting an English-style preposition before every date

❌ งานเริ่มบนวันที่หนึ่งมีนาคม

Incorrect transfer from English ‘on’; บน means physically ‘on top of,’ not ‘on’ a date.

✅ งานเริ่มวันที่หนึ่งมีนาคมครับ

ngan roem wan thi nueng minakhom khrap

The event starts on March 1. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

3. Doubling the date marker after a weekday

❌ วันจันทร์วันที่ห้าตุลาคม

Incorrect in the standard weekday-date frame—use วันจันทร์ที่, not วันจันทร์วันที่.

✅ ประชุมวันจันทร์ที่ห้าตุลาคมค่ะ

prachum wan chan thi ha tulakhom kha

The meeting is on Monday, October 5. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

4. Treating 21 as a digit string inside a date

❌ วันที่สองหนึ่งพฤษภาคม

Incorrect—calendar day 21 is an ordinary cardinal, not two separate code digits.

✅ กำหนดส่งคือวันที่ยี่สิบเอ็ดพฤษภาคมครับ

kamnot song khue wan thi yi sip et phruetsaphakhom khrap

The deadline is May 21. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

5. Using a two-digit year where the century is unclear

❌ เอกสารลงวันที่หนึ่งมกราคมหกเก้า

Unclear in a formal record—the shortened year does not identify its era or century.

✅ เอกสารลงวันที่หนึ่งมกราคม พ.ศ. สองพันห้าร้อยหกสิบเก้าค่ะ

ekkasan long wan thi nueng mokkarakhom pho so song phan ha roi hok sip kao kha

The document is dated January 1, BE 2569. (formal-polite statement, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

Put the day before the month, read the day as an ordinary cardinal, and add the year last. Use วันที่ without a weekday but วัน + weekday + ที่ when the weekday is present. Full month names are neutral and safest; abbreviations are compact written forms. Thai relies on order and context rather than English articles, prepositions, obligatory subjects, or tense endings.
