Ranges and Approximation | Thai Grammar

Thai distinguishes a range such as “three to five days” from an estimate such as “about five days” and a bound such as “no more than five days.” The words are small, but their position matters: ประมาณสิบคน is “about ten people,” กว่าสิบคน is “more than ten people,” and สิบกว่าคน usually narrows the estimate to the teens.

These meanings come from particles, order, and context rather than number inflection. The complete cardinal still obeys ordinary rules—21 is ยี่สิบเอ็ด—and a counted noun still needs its construction-appropriate classifier.

Exact ranges with ถึง

Put ถึง between two endpoints and place the shared classifier or measure unit after the second number: นักเรียนสิบถึงสิบห้าคน, สองถึงสามวัน. In an ordinary numeric range, both endpoints are normally available: สองถึงสามวัน means a duration of two or three days, not strictly more than two and less than three.

The first noun นักเรียน is followed by the whole range and one classifier คน. Repeating คน after both endpoints is possible when contrasting two separate quantities, but it is unnecessary in one compact range.

Build one range first, then attach one shared classifier: noun + lower + ถึง + upper + classifier. Do not copy English by inserting the unit after both numbers.

Explicit spans with ตั้งแต่...ถึง...

ตั้งแต่...ถึง... means “from...to/through...” and presents both boundaries more explicitly. It is especially natural with dates, times, numbered stages, and measurable limits. ตั้งแต่ also appears alone as “from/since,” but a closed span supplies ถึง.

ร้านเปิดตั้งแต่เก้าโมงถึงหกโมงเย็นค่ะ

Repeating วันที่ or บทที่ makes the two endpoints unmistakable. With a simple measure such as สองถึงสามวัน, that repetition would sound heavy.

Written dashes

Compact writing often uses a dash in 2–3 วัน, หน้า 10–15, or a date span. When it represents a numerical range, read the dash as ถึง, not as ขีด “line/dash.” In continuous prose, spelling out ถึง is clearest. Use a dash only when the document’s typography makes its range function unambiguous; a minus sign, hyphen in an identifier, and range dash are not automatically the same thing.

ช่วงหน้า 10–15 อ่านว่าหน้าสิบถึงสิบห้าครับ

ประมาณ, ราว, and สัก: estimates

ประมาณ “approximately/about” is neutral and common in both speech and formal prose. ราว is also neutral, somewhat concise in writing; ราว ๆ is conversational. สัก is an everyday, speaker-oriented approximation or softening device: รอสักสิบนาที “wait about ten minutes.”

Put these markers before the number phrase.

สัก can also mark a nonspecific minimal choice rather than a numerical estimate. The dedicated สัก page separates those uses.

ประมาณ reports an estimate relatively neutrally; สัก often manages the conversation as well, making a proposed time or quantity sound less abrupt.

กว่า before and after a number

The position of กว่า changes how tightly the expression is bounded.

กว่าสิบคน means “more than ten people,” with no built-in upper decade.
สิบกว่าคน means “ten-something people,” normally 11–19.
สามชั่วโมงกว่า means “a little over three hours” or “three hours and some extra.”

There are ten-something customers today. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; normally eleven to nineteen)

รถติดอยู่สามชั่วโมงกว่าค่ะ

rot tit yu sam chua mong kwa kha

We were stuck in traffic for a little over three hours. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

This placement difference is genuinely lexical and must be learned; English “over ten” does not reveal it.

เกือบ, ไม่เกิน, and อย่างน้อย

These markers locate a quantity relative to a threshold.

เกือบยี่สิบ “almost twenty” approaches twenty but ordinarily does not reach it.
ไม่เกินยี่สิบ “no more than twenty” sets an inclusive upper bound: twenty is allowed.
อย่างน้อยยี่สิบ “at least twenty” sets an inclusive lower bound: twenty is the minimum.

ห้องนี้จุคนได้ไม่เกินยี่สิบคนครับ

hong ni chu khon dai mai koen yi sip khon khrap

This room holds no more than twenty people. (formal-polite capacity statement, male speaker)

ต้องมีผู้สมัครอย่างน้อยยี่สิบเอ็ดคนค่ะ

tong mi phu samak yang noi yi sip et khon kha

There must be at least twenty-one applicants. (formal-polite requirement, female speaker)

เราเดินมาเกือบห้ากิโลเมตรแล้วครับ

rao doen ma kueap ha kilomet laeo khrap

We have walked almost five kilometers. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ไม่เกิน includes the stated maximum, and อย่างน้อย includes the stated minimum. เกือบ normally stops below its threshold; it is not another way to say ประมาณ.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ต้องใช้เวลากี่วันคะ

tong chai wela ki wan kha

How many days will it take? (polite question, female speaker)

ประมาณสามถึงห้าวันครับ แต่ไม่เกินหนึ่งสัปดาห์

praman sam thueng ha wan khrap tae mai koen nueng sapda

About three to five days, but no more than one week. (polite reply, male speaker)

The reply combines an estimated range with a firm upper bound. It omits the project and ใช้เวลา because the question keeps them active.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting the classifier before the range

❌ นักเรียนคนสิบถึงสิบห้า

Incorrect—the shared classifier follows the complete range.

✅ กลุ่มนี้มีนักเรียนสิบถึงสิบห้าคนค่ะ

klum ni mi nakrian sip thueng sip ha khon kha

This group has ten to fifteen students. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Moving กว่า after the classifier in a counted noun phrase

❌ มีลูกค้าสิบคนกว่าครับ

Incorrect for ‘ten-something customers’—กว่า goes between the round number and classifier.

✅ มีลูกค้าสิบกว่าคนครับ

mi luk kha sip kwa khon khrap

There are ten-something customers. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

3. Using เกือบ for a quantity that reached the threshold

❌ มีผู้เข้าร่วมเกือบยี่สิบคน คือครบยี่สิบคนพอดี

Contradictory—เกือบยี่สิบ normally means the count did not reach twenty.

✅ มีผู้เข้าร่วมประมาณยี่สิบคนค่ะ

mi phu khao ruam praman yi sip khon kha

There were about twenty participants. (polite, female speaker; twenty remains possible)

4. Reversing the upper and lower bounds

❌ อย่างน้อยยี่สิบคนแปลว่าห้ามเกินยี่สิบคน

Incorrect—อย่างน้อย sets a minimum, not a maximum.

✅ ห้องนี้รับได้ไม่เกินยี่สิบคนครับ

hong ni rap dai mai koen yi sip khon khrap

This room can accept no more than twenty people. (formal-polite statement, male speaker)

5. Reading a range dash as ขีด

❌ หน้า 10–15 อ่านว่าหน้าสิบขีดสิบห้า

Incorrect for a page range—the dash represents ถึง.

✅ หน้า 10–15 อ่านว่าหน้าสิบถึงสิบห้าค่ะ
