สัก for Nonspecific and Approximate Reference

Thai สัก lets a speaker avoid committing to an exact identity or amount. In หนังสือสักเล่ม, the desired book is not yet identified; in รอสักสิบนาที, ten minutes is a useful estimate rather than a measured promise. The same word therefore covers parts of English a, some, about, for a bit, and, under negation, even one—but its Thai distribution is systematic.

The central idea is deliberate nonspecificity. A classifier still identifies the kind of unit, while สัก says that which unit, or precisely how many, is not the point. It is not an article and cannot simply be placed wherever English has a or about.

The minimal contrast: unspecified, exact, and identified

Compare three requests for a chair. All are neutral everyday usage; the particles make the requests polite.

ขอเก้าอี้สักตัวได้ไหมครับ

kho kao i sak tua dai mai khrap

Could I have a chair? (polite, male speaker; any suitable chair will do)

ขอเก้าอี้หนึ่งตัวครับ

kho kao i nueng tua khrap

I'd like exactly one chair. (polite, male speaker; exact count)

ขอเก้าอี้ตัวนี้ค่ะ

kho kao i tua ni kha

I'd like this chair. (polite, female speaker; identified chair)

In the first sentence, สักตัว opens a slot for one acceptable member of the chair category. In the second, หนึ่งตัว contrasts one with another number. In the third, ตัวนี้ points to a particular chair. English can use a chair for both of the first two intentions, so English speakers must notice whether Thai is withholding identity or asserting quantity.

💡
Think of สัก as lowering precision. With a lone classifier it lowers precision about which one; before a number it lowers precision about exactly how many.

Productive positions

สัก occurs inside a noun or measure phrase. The noun normally comes first, just as it does in ordinary Thai classifier constructions.

PatternTypical interpretationExample
noun + สัก + classifierone unspecified instanceหนังสือสักเล่ม — some book / a book
noun + สัก + numeral + classifierapproximately that manyเพื่อนสักสามคน — about three friends
สัก + time/measure phraseapproximately that duration or amountสักสิบนาที — about ten minutes
verb + สัก + classifier/measureone modest occasion or intervalลองสักครั้ง — try once
สักหน่อยa little; a softened small requestพักสักหน่อย — rest for a bit

อยากหาหนังสือสักเล่มไว้อ่านบนรถไฟค่ะ

yak ha nangsue sak lem wai an bon rotfai kha

I'd like to find a book to read on the train. (polite, female speaker; no particular book identified)

ชวนเพื่อนมาสักสามคนก็พอครับ

chuan phuean ma sak sam khon ko pho khrap

Inviting about three friends will be enough. (polite, male speaker; approximate small group)

ขอเวลาตรวจเอกสารสักสิบนาทีนะคะ

kho wela truat ekkasan sak sip nathi na kha

Please give me about ten minutes to check the documents. (polite, female speaker; approximate duration)

The classifier cannot be discarded merely because สัก is present. เพื่อนสักสามคน retains คน, and a countable book remains หนังสือสักเล่ม. Time words such as วัน, นาที, and ชั่วโมง can themselves serve as measure units, so สักสองวัน needs no additional general classifier.

One acceptable instance

With a singular classifier, สัก often resembles English a or some. The resemblance is limited. A bare Thai noun can already be indefinite: อยากซื้อหนังสือ means “I want to buy a book/books” with number left open. Adding สักเล่ม actively presents one suitable instance as the speaker's modest goal.

แวะดื่มกาแฟสักแก้วก่อนกลับไหมคะ

wae duem kafae sak kaeo kon klap mai kha

Shall we stop for a cup of coffee before going back? (polite, female speaker; one nonspecific serving)

สุดสัปดาห์นี้อยากไปทะเลสักวันครับ

sut sapda ni yak pai thale sak wan khrap

This weekend I'd like to spend a day at the seaside. (polite, male speaker; one not-yet-fixed day)

ถ้ามีเวลาลองคุยกับอาจารย์สักครั้งนะคะ

tha mi wela long khui kap achan sak khrang na kha

If you have time, try talking to the professor once. (polite, female suggestion; one worthwhile occasion)

This use often makes requests and suggestions feel less imposing: the speaker asks for one manageable unit, not a large or fully specified commitment. That is a pragmatic effect, not a politeness conjugation. สัก itself is neutral; ครับ, ค่ะ, คะ, นะ, and the request frame carry interpersonal tone.

Approximate quantities

Before a number, สัก means roughly “about” or “some.” It signals that the number is an estimate or a convenient target. It does not mathematically define a range.

งานนี้น่าจะใช้เวลาอีกสักสองวันค่ะ

ngan ni na cha chai wela ik sak song wan kha

This job will probably take about two more days. (polite, female speaker; estimate)

เตรียมน้ำไว้สักห้าขวดนะครับ

triam nam wai sak ha khuat na khrap

Please prepare about five bottles of water. (polite, male speaker; practical estimate)

ร้านอยู่ห่างจากสถานีสักหนึ่งกิโลเมตรค่ะ

ran yu hang chak sathani sak nueng kilomet kha

The shop is about one kilometer from the station. (polite, female speaker; approximate distance)

Exact reporting removes สัก: an invoice states น้ำห้าขวด, not น้ำสักห้าขวด, if precisely five were delivered. Conversely, ประมาณห้าขวด explicitly says “approximately five bottles” and is comfortable in neutral or formal reporting; สัก is especially natural in plans, suggestions, requests, and conversational estimates.

💡
สัก is not a mathematical approximation sign. It presents a conversationally adequate target, so the acceptable range comes from the situation: “about ten minutes” is looser than an official ten-minute deadline.

Under negation: “not even one”

Negation changes the inference. In ไม่มาเลยสักคน, the sentence does not mean that approximately one person failed to come. The open “one acceptable instance” introduced by สัก falls within the scope of ไม่, producing “not even one.” This is a common neutral pattern, not a separate lexical item.

ไม่มีใครตอบคำถามถูกสักคนค่ะ

mai mi khrai top khamtham thuk sak khon kha

Not a single person answered the question correctly. (polite, female speaker; emphatic zero)

เมื่อคืนผมนอนไม่หลับสักนาทีครับ

muea khuen phom non mai lap sak nathi khrap

Last night I didn't sleep for even a minute. (polite, male speaker; emphatic zero duration)

This negative-polarity use connects to the wider system of indefinite pronouns. Do not translate สัก in isolation; first determine whether it is in a positive request or estimate, or inside the scope of negation.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

คืนนี้อยากดูหนังสักเรื่องไหมคะ

khuen ni yak du nang sak rueang mai kha

Would you like to watch a movie tonight? (polite, female speaker; one unspecified movie)

ได้ครับ เลือกเรื่องสั้น ๆ สักเรื่องนะครับ พรุ่งนี้ต้องตื่นเช้า

dai khrap lueak rueang san san sak rueang na khrap phrung ni tong tuen chao

Sure. Let's choose a short one; we have to get up early tomorrow. (polite, male speaker)

The movie need not be identified when the invitation is made. Once both speakers choose it, later clauses can use a bare noun or omit the object entirely; Thai does not need an article to announce that discourse change.

Common Mistakes

❌ สักหนังสือเล่มก็ได้ครับ

Incorrect order — สัก does not function as a pre-noun article here.

✅ หนังสือสักเล่มก็ได้ครับ

nangsue sak lem ko dai khrap

Any book will do. (polite, male speaker; one nonspecific book)

❌ ขอหนังสือสักสามครับ

Incorrect — the counted noun needs its classifier after the numeral.

✅ ขอหนังสือสักสามเล่มครับ

kho nangsue sak sam lem khrap

I'd like about three books. (polite, male speaker; approximate quantity)

❌ รายการนี้มีสินค้าแน่นอนสักห้าชิ้นค่ะ

Contradictory for an exact inventory — สัก marks loosened precision.

✅ รายการนี้มีสินค้าห้าชิ้นค่ะ

raikan ni mi sinkha ha chin kha

This list contains five items. (polite, female speaker; exact inventory)

❌ ไม่มีใครมาสักคนจึงแปลว่ามาประมาณหนึ่งคน

Incorrect interpretation — under negation, สักคน means ‘even one,’ yielding zero people.

✅ ไม่มีใครมาสักคนค่ะ

mai mi khrai ma sak khon kha

Not a single person came. (polite, female speaker; emphatic zero)

Key Takeaways

สัก deliberately lowers precision. Use noun + สัก + classifier for one unspecified instance, noun + สัก + numeral + classifier for an approximate count, and สัก + measure for a modest interval or amount. Keep the classifier required by the noun, and remember that negation turns the open possibility into “not even one.”
