Reading Phone Numbers, Addresses, and Codes | Thai Grammar

A string of digits does not automatically name a quantity. In Thai, 081 in a phone number is three identifying digits—ศูนย์ แปด หนึ่ง—while 81 items is the cardinal แปดสิบเอ็ด. Function controls the reading: telephone numbers, postal codes, verification codes, house numbers, room numbers, and counts do not all follow one universal rule.

The central practical distinction is between a cardinal, which expresses magnitude and uses place-value forms such as ยี่สิบ and เอ็ด, and a digit string, which preserves each symbol and therefore uses ศูนย์, หนึ่ง, and สอง. Compare the positional rule on the final-one page. Leading zeros matter in identifiers even though they contribute no magnitude to a cardinal.

Cardinal or identifier?

Before reading, ask what the digits do. Are they counting, or are they labeling something?

Typography is not enough. The digits 21 are ยี่สิบเอ็ด when they express a quantity or ordered floor, but สองหนึ่ง when they are two positions in a code.

Telephone numbers: one digit at a time

Read telephone numbers digit by digit, pausing at conventional visual groups so the listener can record and verify them. Use ศูนย์ for 0, หนึ่ง for 1, and ordinarily สอง for 2. Do not use positional เอ็ด or ยี่: those belong to compound cardinals, not separate telephone digits.

Older telephone practice used โท for digit 2 to distinguish it from 3 over a poor connection. The Royal Society now permits both สอง and โท in telephone numbers. Learn โท for recognition in (older or specialized telephony), but สอง is the transparent neutral choice for ordinary modern speech.

Domestic mobile numbers retain their initial 0. In international form, Thailand’s country code +66 replaces that domestic trunk zero. That dialing transformation must not be mistaken for permission to drop leading zeros when dictating a domestic number.

When calling from abroad, drop the initial zero and use country code 66. (polite, male instruction)

Pause between phone-number groups, but do not turn a group into a cardinal. A written group 234 remains สอง สาม สี่, not สองร้อยสามสิบสี่.

Postal codes and other fixed codes

Thai postal codes have five digits and are read digit by digit. Internal and final 1 remain หนึ่ง, and 0 remains ศูนย์. The same strategy normally applies to PINs, one-time passwords, booking references made only of digits, and other fixed-width codes.

รหัสไปรษณีย์คือหนึ่งศูนย์หนึ่งหนึ่งศูนย์ค่ะ

Here สี่ตัว counts the four digit symbols, so สี่ is a cardinal and ตัว is the classifier. The digits being confirmed are still read separately. Thai can therefore use cardinal and digit-string grammar in the same exchange.

House numbers: a genuine mixed system

House numbers have their own official reading options. A two-digit house number is read as a whole cardinal: บ้านเลขที่ 10 is บ้านเลขที่สิบ. With three or more digits, the number before a slash may be read either digit by digit or as a whole cardinal. Digits after / are read separately. A number beginning with 0 is read entirely digit by digit.

The expression บ้านเลขที่ is a label meaning “house number,” not a noun plus a counting classifier. The slash is read ทับ. Do not generalize the house-number options to postal codes or phones.

House numbers are the honest exception to a simple cardinal-versus-code split: three or more digits before a slash allow two readings, while digits after the slash and any leading-zero number are read separately.

Room numbers and organization-specific codes

Room, route, model, and reference numbers can be treated as identifiers or as ordinary cardinals depending on local convention. ห้องสองศูนย์สี่ clearly identifies room 204 digit by digit; some institutions may say ห้องสองร้อยสี่. When recording important information, repeat the digits and ask for confirmation rather than assuming one universal grouping.

The reply can omit เบอร์ของผม “my number” because the request supplies the frame. The confirmation counts four symbols with สี่ตัว and then reads their values separately.

Common Mistakes

1. Using ยี่ and เอ็ด inside a phone string

❌ เบอร์เริ่มด้วยศูนย์แปดเอ็ดครับ

Incorrect digit-string reading—an isolated telephone digit 1 is หนึ่ง, not เอ็ด.

✅ เบอร์เริ่มด้วยศูนย์แปดหนึ่งครับ

2. Dropping the leading zero from a domestic number
