Duration Expressions after Predicates

English normally introduces a duration with for: wait for an hour, live there for three years. Standard Thai usually places the measured span directly after the predicate: รอหนึ่งชั่วโมง, อยู่สามปี. No Thai equivalent of for is required.

That simple pattern hides an important set of contrasts. A bare span measures an event or state; มา...แล้ว traces a continuing situation up to a reference point; ตั้งแต่ names its starting boundary; and ใน + duration can measure the time within which a bounded result is completed. The ตั้งแต่ and starting-points page develops the boundary side of this system.

The basic postpredicate pattern

The duration follows the verb phrase, including its object or location.

Productive frameInterpretationModel
event + durationhow long the event lastsคุยกันสองชั่วโมง
event + object + durationhow long the event involving that object lastsอ่านรายงานครึ่งชั่วโมง
state + location + durationhow long the state holds thereอยู่เชียงใหม่สามปี
event/state + มา + duration + แล้วspan extending to a reference pointรอมาหนึ่งชั่วโมงแล้ว
event + เสร็จ + ใน + durationcompletion within an intervalทำเสร็จในสองวัน
เป็นเวลา + durationexplicit duration, usually in careful writingปิดเป็นเวลาสามวัน

เมื่อวานเราคุยกันเกือบสองชั่วโมงค่ะ

muea wan rao khui kan kueap song chua mong kha

Yesterday we talked for almost two hours. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; bounded event duration)

ผมอ่านรายงานฉบับนี้ครึ่งชั่วโมงครับ

phom an raingan chabap ni khrueng chua mong khrap

I read this report for half an hour. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; no claim that I finished it)

พวกเราพักที่โรงแรมนี้สามคืนค่ะ

phuak rao phak thi rongraem ni sam khuen kha

We stayed at this hotel for three nights. (ordinary polite travel report, female speaker)

There is no preposition before สองชั่วโมง, ครึ่งชั่วโมง, or สามคืน. The measured phrase attaches after the whole predicate. Thai phrase order, rather than an inflected verb, identifies its scope.

💡
For neutral “do something for X time,” start with predicate + X time. Do not translate English for word by word.

Event shape changes what the duration measures

Activities and states naturally extend through time. A bounded accomplishment includes an endpoint, so a bare duration often measures time spent on the activity without asserting completion.

เมื่อคืนเธอเขียนรายงานสามชั่วโมงค่ะ

muea khuen thoe khian raingan sam chua mong kha

Last night she worked on the report for three hours. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; completion is not asserted)

เมื่อคืนเธอเขียนรายงานเสร็จในสามชั่วโมงค่ะ

muea khuen thoe khian raingan set nai sam chua mong kha

Last night she finished writing the report in three hours. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; bounded result attained within the interval)

ร้านปิดปรับปรุงห้าวันครับ

ran pit prapprung ha wan khrap

The shop was closed for renovations for five days. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; resulting closed state lasts five days)

The contrast between เขียนรายงานสามชั่วโมง and เขียนรายงานเสร็จในสามชั่วโมง is not cosmetic. The first views the writing internally and leaves the endpoint open; the second includes เสร็จ and measures time to completion with ใน.

A punctual event such as “arrive” has no natural three-hour internal span. To use a duration, choose a lasting phase: รอรถสามชั่วโมง “wait for the vehicle for three hours,” not an attempt to make มาถึง itself last three hours.

Bounded duration versus duration continuing to a reference point

A bare duration can describe a completed interval or a planned one. The frame มา + duration + แล้ว explicitly traces the situation toward the active reference point and makes its accumulated extent relevant.

เมื่อเช้าฉันรอรถหนึ่งชั่วโมงค่ะ

muea chao chan ro rot nueng chua mong kha

This morning I waited for the vehicle for an hour. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; bounded past interval)

ฉันรอรถมาหนึ่งชั่วโมงแล้วค่ะ

chan ro rot ma nueng chua mong laeo kha

I've been waiting for the vehicle for an hour. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; span reaches now)

ถ้ารถยังไม่มา ผมจะรอต่ออีกครึ่งชั่วโมงครับ

tha rot yang mai ma phom cha ro to ik khrueng chua mong khrap

If the vehicle still doesn't come, I'll wait another half hour. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; projected duration)

The unchanged predicate รอ is compatible with past, present-reaching, and future intervals. English changes tense; Thai changes temporal anchoring and viewpoint.

At a past reference point, the continuing frame remains possible:

ตอนร้านปิด ลูกค้าคนนั้นรออยู่หน้าประตูมาสี่สิบนาทีแล้วครับ

ton ran pit luk kha khon nan ro yu na pratu ma si sip nathi laeo khrap

When the shop closed, that customer had already been waiting at the door for forty minutes. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; span reaches a past endpoint)

Duration, starting point, and endpoint

English for answers “how long?”; since answers “from when?” Thai keeps the same distinction.

QuestionThai frameExample
How long?predicate + durationอยู่สองปี
How long up to now/then?predicate + มา + duration + แล้วอยู่มาสองปีแล้ว
Since when?predicate + มา + ตั้งแต่ + startอยู่มาตั้งแต่ปีที่แล้ว
Until when?predicate + จนถึง + endpointอยู่จนถึงวันศุกร์

เขาทำงานที่สาขานี้มาตั้งแต่เดือนเมษายนครับ

khao tham ngan thi sakha ni ma tangtae duean mesayon khrap

He has worked at this branch since April. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; explicit starting point)

ฉันจะอยู่กรุงเทพฯ จนถึงวันศุกร์ค่ะ

chan cha yu krung thep chon thueng wan suk kha

I'll stay in Bangkok until Friday. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; endpoint rather than duration)

Do not replace one with another mechanically. สามเดือน measures an amount; ตั้งแต่เดือนเมษายน identifies the left boundary; จนถึงวันศุกร์ identifies the right boundary.

เป็นเวลา in careful and formal packaging

เป็นเวลา + duration explicitly labels a following quantity as a span. It is common in news, notices, reports, and careful explanations, but ordinary conversation usually prefers the bare postpredicate duration.

พิพิธภัณฑ์จะปิดปรับปรุงเป็นเวลาสองสัปดาห์ค่ะ

phiphitthaphan cha pit prapprung pen wela song sapda kha

The museum will close for renovations for two weeks. (formal public-information style, female voice)

ระบบหยุดทำงานเป็นเวลาประมาณยี่สิบนาทีครับ

rabop yut tham ngan pen wela praman yi sip nathi khrap

The system was down for approximately twenty minutes. (formal-neutral technical report, male speaker)

In a casual reply, ปิดสองสัปดาห์ or ระบบล่มประมาณยี่สิบนาที is shorter and more idiomatic. Register, not grammatical correctness, motivates the fuller expression.

Interaction with อยู่ and แล้ว

อยู่ opens an internal view of an activity or state. แล้ว marks accumulated extent or a change relative to the reference point. With a duration, their interpretation depends on event type and context.

เด็กหลับอยู่เกือบสามชั่วโมงแล้วค่ะ

dek lap yu kueap sam chua mong laeo kha

The child has been asleep for almost three hours. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; continuing state)

เราเดินกันอยู่สองชั่วโมงก่อนจะเจอทางออกครับ

rao doen kan yu song chua mong kon cha choe thang ok khrap

We walked for two hours before finding the exit. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; internal view inside a completed narrative)

การประชุมจบแล้ว ใช้เวลาทั้งหมดสองชั่วโมงค่ะ

kan prachum chop laeo chai wela thangmot song chua mong kha

The meeting is over; it took two hours in total. (neutral workplace report, female speaker; explicitly completed interval)

Because ประชุมสองชั่วโมงแล้ว can mean that two hours have elapsed and the meeting may still be continuing, the last example uses จบแล้ว to remove that ambiguity.

💡
To state that an activity finished, do not rely on a duration plus แล้ว alone. Add an endpoint such as เสร็จ, จบ, or a following event that closes the interval.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

คุณรอพบหมอมานานเท่าไรแล้วคะ

khun ro phop mo ma nan thaorai laeo kha

How long have you been waiting to see the doctor? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ประมาณสี่สิบนาทีแล้วครับ

praman si sip nathi laeo khrap

About forty minutes. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; predicate is recoverable)

ปกติการตรวจใช้เวลานานไหมคะ

pokkati kan truat chai wela nan mai kha

Does the examination normally take long? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ประมาณครึ่งชั่วโมงครับ แต่วันนี้คนเยอะ

praman khrueng chua mong khrap tae wan ni khon yoe

About half an hour, but there are many people today. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Translating English for with สำหรับ

❌ ฉันรอรถสำหรับหนึ่งชั่วโมงค่ะ

Incorrect—สำหรับ means ‘for/intended for’ in other relations; it does not introduce a neutral measured duration.

✅ ฉันรอรถหนึ่งชั่วโมงค่ะ

chan ro rot nueng chua mong kha

I waited for the vehicle for an hour. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

2. Inserting the duration between the subject and predicate

❌ ผมสองชั่วโมงอ่านรายงานนี้ครับ

Incorrect neutral order—the measured duration follows the complete predicate rather than separating its subject and verb.

✅ ผมอ่านรายงานนี้สองชั่วโมงครับ

phom an raingan ni song chua mong khrap

I read this report for two hours. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

3. Confusing duration with time to completion

❌ ช่างซ่อมเครื่องสองชั่วโมงค่ะ

Wrong if the intended claim is that the repair was completed within two hours; this only measures time spent repairing.

✅ ช่างซ่อมเครื่องเสร็จในสองชั่วโมงค่ะ

chang som khrueang set nai song chua mong kha

The technician finished repairing the machine in two hours. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

4. Using a duration where a starting point is required

❌ เขาทำงานที่นี่มาวันจันทร์ครับ

Incorrect for ‘since Monday’; วันจันทร์ is a starting point, not a measured span.

✅ เขาทำงานที่นี่มาตั้งแต่วันจันทร์ครับ

khao tham ngan thi ni ma tangtae wan chan khrap

He has been working here since Monday. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

5. Treating แล้ว as proof that the durative event ended

❌ เขาประชุมมาสองชั่วโมงแล้วค่ะ

Wrong translation as necessarily ‘the meeting ended after two hours’; this naturally allows the meeting to be continuing.

✅ เขาประชุมมาสองชั่วโมงแล้ว และยังไม่จบค่ะ

khao prachum ma song chua mong laeo lae yang mai chop kha

He has been in the meeting for two hours, and it still isn't over. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • A measured duration normally follows the complete Thai predicate with no equivalent of English for.
  • Bare duration measures an event or state; มา + duration + แล้ว traces accumulated time to a reference point.
  • ตั้งแต่ names a starting point, while จนถึง names an endpoint.
  • Bare duration with an accomplishment does not guarantee completion; เสร็จ/จบ + ใน + duration makes completion explicit.
  • อยู่ and แล้ว shape viewpoint, but time adverbs and discourse still determine past, present, or future reference.
